Seeding back on track with average year Seeding is advancing quickly in the province thanks to warm, dry weather. Producers now have 60 per cent of the provincial crop in the ground, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report. The fiveyear (2012-2016) seeding average for this time of year is 65 per cent. Many producers have completed seeding operations while others will need several more weeks of warm, dry weather. At

this time, it is estimated that five per cent of acres will not be seeded due to excess moisture. Seeding is most advanced in the southeast, where producers have 80 per cent of the crop in the ground. Seventy-six per cent is seeded in the southwest; 59 per cent in the westcentral region; 53 per cent in the east-central region; 43 per cent in the northwest; and 25 per cent in the northeast. Wholesale Trade shows continued strength In March 2017, wholesale trade in Saskatchewan grew 13.8 per cent (seasonally adjusted) over March 2016, above the national average of 10.2 per cent for the same period. Saskatchewan ranked third in percentage growth among the provinces. “Wholesale trade continued to grow in March, and that shows that our provincial economy remains strong and resilient,” Economy Minister Jeremy Harrison said. “Growth in wholesale trade points to optimism as wholesale trade statistics are known as a leading indicator of future economic growth.” Wholesale trade totalled $2.2 billion in March. The industries that experienced the largest (unadjusted) growth increases over last year are motor vehicle and parts (24.6 per cent); machinery, equipment and supplies (21.8 per cent); and miscellaneous merchant (12.3 per cent). From February 2017 to March 2017, wholesale trade in the province increased by 1.4 per cent (seasonally adjusted).

ince did not receive any moisture this past week, although the Vonda area reported 18 mm. Fields remain wet in more northern regions while fields in other parts of the province are in need of rain to help crops germinate and emerge. Provincially, cropland topsoil moisture is rated as 11 per cent surplus, 79 per cent adequate, nine per cent short and one per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as seven per cent surplus, 76 per cent adequate, 15 per cent short and two per cent very short. The majority of crops are either at or behind

normal developmental stages for this time of year. Overall, emerged crops are in good condition, although there has been some damage caused by strong winds, localized flooding and lack of moisture. Hard frost last week damaged some alfalfa, winter cereal and canola fields; some fields will be reseeded in the coming weeks. Pasture conditions are rated as 15 per cent excellent, 53 per cent good, 24 per cent fair, seven per cent poor and one per cent very poor. SaskPower reports that there were 23 power

line contacts involving farm equipment between May 15 and 21 (67 in May, to date), and encourages farmers to use caution. Safety information is available at www.saskpower.com/safety. Producers are busy seeding, controlling weeds and moving cattle. A complete version of the Crop Report is available online at http://www. publications.gov.sk.ca/ details.cfm?p=85530. HOME IMPROVEMENT LAWN, YARD & GARDEN

How to create the perfect playroom (NC) — Children are full of surprises. From your heart to your home, they sure do make an impact. If there’s room to spare, it’s great for kids to have their own space — a place to play, make noise, jump around and unleash their creativity. But how does one create this super room that has to be fun, safe, multi-functional and inspiring? It’s more than possible, and it just might save your sanity. Follow these top tips to create the perfect playroom. Soundproof: Kids are noisy. You might be thinking there’s no way around this one, but soundproofing insulation has you covered. If you don’t enjoy the noise of boisterous play permeating to other areas of the house, than this is the perfect solution. Experts often recommend a product called Roxul Safe ‘n’ Sound, because its high-density composition and non-directional fibre structure do an amazing job of turning

your indoor playground into a quiet zone. It is also made with natural and recycled materials and is Greenguard certified for indoor air quality. Storage: Whether it’s toys, board games, books, tiny collections or craft supplies, it’s sometimes surprising how much stuff there is to tuck away. Keep things looking tidy and organized with clever storage pieces. Look for items that pull double duty — great from a design perspective, but with easyaccess, pull-out drawers or shelving. Neatly labeled clear plastic containers are also a favourite, as are built-in benches with toss cushions. Be sure to keep plenty of open floor space, because kids love to and need to move. Safety: It’s important to

tailor safety measures to your child’s age and stage of development. A good rule of thumb is to ensure that all large furnishings are secured to the wall to prevent toppling. Soft storage drawers or lightweight bins are better than heavy plastic tubs or large toy boxes. Outlet covers can help reduce risk for younger children. Consider green building materials and low VOC paints. Install parental controls on any computers, tablets or electronic devices. Special features: Kids love to unleash their imaginations. If you have the space, consider a small, elevated stage for performances. A painted chalkboard wall is always a hit, along with a designated gallery for their creative masterpieces. A play table is ideal for colouring, painting and crafts, while cushioned benches or bean bag chairs can provide a relaxing place to kick back and read a

Basement is cold? (NC) — Chances are that your furnace has the capacity to heat your basement and the aboveground levels of your home. So why are so many finished basements cold in winter? Lack of cold air return ducting is often the culprit. For any furnace to deliver warm air to a given room, the cool air that’s already there needs to get out of the way. Unfortunately, cold air

return ducts are often forgotten when basements are finished. To function properly, they need to draw air from the basement floor level where it’s the coolest. This work is best done by a professional heating contractor. If you need professional help making your

Making existing windows energy efficient Drafty windows make homes less comfortable by allowing cold air in during the winter and warm air in when temperatures rise. But comfort is not the only concern associated with leaky windows, as such fixtures also can have a negative impact on the environment. Leaky windows require heating and cooling systems to work harder to keep home interiors comfortable during times of the year when temperatures can be extreme. In the dead of winter, a leaky window will force a home’s inhabitants to turn up the thermostat, which only increases energy consumption and energy bills. The same scenario plays out in summer, when leaky windows allow hot air in, leading homeowners to lower the temperature of air conditioning units so everyone inside is cool and comfortable. Thankfully, making windows more energy efficient does not necessarily require homeowners to replace existing windows. Before going that potentially expensive route, homeowners can consider the following strategies to

improve the energy efficiency of their windows. • Hang curtains. Curtains can help homeowners cut down on heating and cooling costs. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, properly hung draperies can reduce heat loss by as much as 25 percent. In the summer, curtains can block the hot rays from the sun from entering a home, reducing the need to turn up air conditioning units. While curtains won’t fix leaks or block hot or cold air from entering a home, they can serve as a buffer between a home’s inhabitants and the air seeping in through leaks. • Caulk or add weatherstripping. Small cracks and gaps around windows,

which are most often found around windows in older buildings, might not seem like a big deal, but such breaches can lead to considerable energy loss. The DOE recommends using caulk to seal cracks that are less than 1⁄4-inch wide on the parts of the window that do not move (i.e., frames and where the trim meets the wall). Caulk might be less effective at fixing leaks larger than 1⁄4 inch in width. Employ weatherstripping to address leaks on movable parts of the window. Properly applied weatherstripping should adequately seal windows when they are closed without making it difficult to open or close them later on. Weatherstripping is

Bath trends to make a statement (NC) — Bathroom designs have come a long way. From the ice creamcolours and wallpaper border applied in the 1980s to the bold and contemporary choices of the 2000s, styles continue to evolve while incorporating the latest materials. This year, Todlynn MacPherson, of Royal LePage Truro Real Estate, recommends keeping your design decisions simple. Here are some key trends to watch: Tile. Modern bathrooms commonly feature unique applications of tile, which are popular because they are affordable and versatile. Options include “finger” tiles, which can be applied either vertically or horizontally. Colour. Modern baths use a lot of black, white and gray. These moody neutrals are a style hit and can exude luxury and relaxation. Flooring. You can be original with what you place underfoot in your bathroom space. Ceramics, wood and natural stone are widely used in today’s bath designs. Lighting. Rather than one main light source, multiple lighting fixtures that highlight key areas of the bathroom are popular

today. Natural elements. Be sure to include green, living plants as part of your bathroom vibe. They add

to the ambiance and bring life and oxygen to any space. Find more information at www.royallepage.ca.

available in various materials, and homeowners can visit www.energy.gov/energysaver/weatherstripping to find the material that’s most suitable for their situation. • Install windows films. Plastic window films are another option for homeowners looking to improve the energy efficiency of their windows. Heat shrink film can be cut to fit each individual leaky window in a home and then attached to windows using double-sided tape. A hair dryer can then be used to shrink the film and remove any wrinkles. Low-emissivity, or LowE, coatings are a more

expensive alternative to heat shrink film, and they can be equally effective at improving energy efficiency. Installation of Low-E coatings can be more difficult, as they do not provide as much leeway for mistakes during application

as heat shrink film. Leaky windows are bad for homeowners’ energy bills and the environment. But homeowners have options other than full window replacements to fix leaks and improve efficiency.

The right choice for your fence project (NC) — Whether you are looking to create your own private oasis, or add more security and safety to your home, a proper fence can make a world of difference. But the type of fence you choose will ultimately stem from how you use your yard. “The challenge comes in finding something that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing,” explains Todlynn MacPherson, who is with Royal LePage Truro Real Estate. MacPherson recommends reviewing these three scenarios to determine your fencing needs: 1. Privacy. If you are looking to create more privacy for your home, solid wood fences are a good option. Most fences built for privacy stand about six feet high. They are available in varieties of wood types, with cedar and spruce being the most popular. Lattice-tops can add aesthetic appeal, and a myriad of building designs are available. Ask your local building centre for wood fence and gate design ideas or research online. 2. Safety. For backyards with pools, a fence with limited horizontal rails is recommended. This will ward off trespassers from

using the fence as a ladder to get into the pool area. Having a gate with a spring latch is a bylaw requirement in most municipalities. Black aluminum fenc-

ing is typically produced with vertical spindles — often emulating wrought iron design — and provides good sight lines for pool areas.

3. Security. Keeping children or pets safe in the yard is critical for any family. Chain-link fencing is strong, reliable, and affordable. Whether you

have a dog that jumps or one that digs, chain-link fences can be built to suit the needs of your pet. Although it is one of the less aesthetically appeal-

ing options, chain-link fencing prioritizes safety and won’t break your budget. For more information at www.royallepage.ca.

with cold water and let sit 10 minutes. (This will take some of the sharpness out of the raw onion.) In medium bowl, stir together remaining salsa ingredients: chopped nectarines, chopped red pepper, finely chopped jalapeno, lime juice, cilantro and 1/4 teaspoon salt; set aside. In small bowl, combine tarragon, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper. Brush salmon with oil and rub with tarragon mixture to coat both sides. Place salmon on hot grill grate. Cover grill and cook salmon 8 to 10 minutes or until it turns opaque throughout, turning over once with large spatula. Transfer to platter. Drain onion well. Stir onion into nectarine mixture. Serve nectarine salsa with grilled salmon. Serves 4. Tip: We love the ease of salmon fillets, but if you find it easier to cook and turn salmon steaks, simply use the 10-minutes-per-inch-of-thickness rule as a guide for your cooking time.

This Week Marketplace | June 2, 2017

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband, who is 73 and otherwise in good health, had a colonoscopy in the summer of 2012 and was told that because no polyps or any problems were found, he did not need another test for 10 years. This October, he was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer, which has spread to the abdomen and omentum. He also had seven polyps removed during his latest examination.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “War Machine” (TV-MA) — Continuing its quest to blur the line between box office and set-top box, this week brings Netflix’s much anticipated premiere of “War Machine,” a Brad Pitt vehicle that seriously amps the streaming service’s star power. Inspired by “The Operators: The Wild & Terrifying Inside Story of America’s War in Afghanistan,” written by Rolling Stone journalist Michael Hastings, the farcical comedy chronicles the meteoric rise and inevitable crash and burn of the fictional Gen. Glen McMahon, newly minted commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan, as he tries to win the unwinnable war. Pitt’s take on real-life Gen. Stanley McChrystal — invincible silver fox, demigod to his subordinates — is clever and confident. Billed as “part reality, part savage parody,” it is directed by David Michod (“Animal Kingdom”) and also features Tilda Swinton, Sir Ben Kingsley, Anthony

My question is, How likely is it that such a virulent cancer could grow in such a short time? I would be resigned to the diagnosis if I didn’t feel that something was missed in the initial exam. Also, I had a colonoscopy done by the same doctor this summer and also was told that I need not come back for 10 years. Should I be concerned? — H.B. ANSWER: I am very sorry to hear about your husband. What happened is very unusual. All guidelines agree that in a person with a normal colonoscopy, a repeat in 10 years is recommended. A repeat in five years would have been recommended if a low-risk polyp had been found, earlier with highrisk or multiple polyps. I haven’t personally seen a

case like your husband’s, where an advanced cancer presents less than 10 years after a normal colonoscopy. This should happen in fewer than 1 in 1,000 people. There are several reasons why it can happen. The most important is that even a properly done colonoscopy misses polyps. Very small polyps (less than 5 mm) can be missed 26 percent of the time, but large polyps (greater than 10 mm) are missed only 2 percent of the time. Although the colonoscopy is the best screening test we have for colon cancer, it isn’t perfect. It’s also possible that he just had a very fast-growing cancer. While I understand your concern about getting yourself an earlier repeat colonoscopy, your risk is

very small, and if you trust the doctor who did the colonoscopy, you should get your repeat in 10 years. READERS: Some 140,000 people are diagnosed with colon cancer in the U.S each year. The booklet on colon cancer provides useful information on its causes, symptoms and treatments. To order a copy, write: Dr. Roach — No. 505W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. DEAR DR. ROACH: My mother, 88 years old, recently switched her medicine for hypertension from timed release, which too, must have something very special in you: the ability to sit through an hour and 41 minutes of this unimaginative mess of a movie. With genetics experimentation, alien attributes and torture, there should be something to work with here, right? Nope. This film is all build and no structure. Spare yourself — and the spiders — the disappointment.

Brad Pitt in “War Machine” Michael Hall, Alan Ruck, Meg Tilly and Topher Grace. “The Blackcoat’s Daughter” (aka “February”) (R) — Pervasive chill and desolation join the cast in the directorial debut of Oz Perkins, son of the late Anthony Perkins (“Psycho”). Kat (Kiernan Shipka) is stranded at her remote boarding school when her parents are unexpected no-shows at the start of winter break. She’s joined by Rose (Lucy Boynton), an older, bolder but not wiser fellow student. Plagued by unexplainable events, the girls face an escalating supernatural threat. Emma Stone plays Joan, a troubled young woman who, for reasons unknown, is frantically headed toward the school. Their stories are told in interlacing arcs, which intersect in the film’s terrifying climax. This film has atmosphere for days. Yes, the story lacks acute character development and plot details are deliberately nebulous, but Perkins’ slow drip keeps the element of suspense high and doesn’t loosen the lonely grip of winter’s despair. “Staying Vertical”

(NR) — Screenwriter Leo (Damien Bonnard) wanders the French countryside in search of a story. He meets shepherdess Marie (India Hair), with whom he almost immediately has a child. Marie promptly leaves him and the baby behind, and Leo spends the rest of the film exploring relationships with the quirky villagers, still in pursuit of a tale to tell. Very explicit sexual scenes, including live, unvarnished childbirth, make “Staying Vertical” a film strictly for hardy grown-ups. DOG OF THE WEEK “Rupture” (NR) — Brought to you by director Steven Shainberg, “Rupture” is the story of a mysterious organization that abducts single mom Renee (Noomi Rapace) off the side of the road. They subject her to intense interrogation and explore her deep fear of spiders. The abductors’ plan to “rupture” Renee’s genetic code, unleashing the monster within, goes awry (or does it?), but not before Terrible Things have been revealed. “You have something very special in you,” they tell Renee. And you,

she has been taking for 10 years, to one that is not timed release, because the timed release was too expensive. I’m worried. Has she compromised her health by doing this? Her cardiologist gave her the go-ahead. — J.R. ANSWER: In my opinion, timed-release versions for high blood pressure are preferable to nontimed-release because the level of the medication in the blood can go up and down to a greater degree with the regular-release formulation. However, it

does depend on the medication, and her cardiologist knows more than I do about her particular situation. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. Are you tired of feeling saggy, lumpy, pinched or strained? Well you’re not alone. As you’ve probably seen on Oprah or read in women’s magazines, over 80 percent of all women wear the wrong size bra. Due to the overwhelming response to the previous clinic, Barb Chapman is coming to

YORKTON AND CANORA TUESDAY, JUNE 6TH

to outfit you with the best possible bra for your body. Chapman said she will be seeing clients on a one-on-one .basis, explaining the benefits of good bras and measuring their bodies properly “Most women just want to find a good-fitting bra that’s not uncomfortable,” Chapman said. “What they don’t realize is that a good support bra is also important for blood circulation and enhanced lymph drainage.” “Chapman has over 200 bra sizes available for ordering, ranging from 30AA to 52KK. It’s likely that you’ll fit somewhere between those sizes. She offers these questions for women to ask themselves: • Do you have a drawer full of bras but none that fit comfortably? • Does your bust line “bounce” when you walk while wearing your “everyday” bra? • Do you overflow the cup of your bra? • Do your bra straps slip of your shoulder or dig into your shoulders leaving red and painful marks? • Does your bra ride up in the back because you tighten the straps to give you added support? • Have you ever begun an exercise class only to drop out because your breasts ached from lack of support while jumping or running? If you answer yes to any of these you are in need of a new bra, and a custom one could be the way to go.

YOU'VE TRIED ALL THE REST -- NOW TRY THE BEST! th
