DR. ROACH WRITES: A while back, I asked readers for suggestions on swallowing pills, and I got many helpful answers. I particularly liked this pharmacist’s advice, since it combines physics and common sense: “Because capsules FLOAT and tablets SINK, two ways are helpful. For capsules this works for me:
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A recent spate of confusion regarding decision-making begins to clear up. But caution is still advised. Continue to check details. An old friend has important news. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You’re anxious to see your ideas move from concept to development. But trying to force the issue right now could backfire. Wait for movement to resume shortly. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Keep your thoughts focused on the positive as you deal with an unexpected turn of events in
Place the capsule on your tongue, then take a big swallow of water through a straw, keeping your chin neutral. For tablets, put water in your mouth first, then tilt your head back and drop the tablet into your mouth and swallow.” Using a straw was the most frequent advice I heard. Thicker liquids were the key for other readers, while one reminded me that an inexpensive pill crusher can turn a pill to powder, which can then be mixed into yogurt or applesauce. However, always check with your pharmacist, since some pills, such as long-acting formulations, should not be crushed, and
a few should not be mixed with foods. Another person found that swallowing some ice chips for a few minutes prevented the gag reflex that kept her from swallowing medicines. DEAR DR. ROACH: My father read your recent column pertaining to kidney stones. He recently passed a kidney stone and was wondering if there is a lab that he could send his stone to directly to be analyzed? Unfortunately, he prefers not to visit an internist or urologist. — L.P. ANSWER: It depends on the state, but most laboratories require a professional’s order to perform testing. I have mixed feel-
ings about this; however, I generally agree, since a physician or other provider should provide individualized recommendations on the appropriate changes in diet, medication and fluid intake, based on the stone type, medications taken, diseases or conditions present and other factors. There are services available on the Internet that will perform laboratory testing without an order (by having a medical director in a given state order the lab), but I don’t recommend it for the reasons above. DEAR DR. ROACH: I have to take levothyroxine in order to obtain an acceptable TSH number.
I have read that some doctors are stating that there is a relationship between hypothyroidism and gluten intolerance, possibly even celiac disease. Is this proven to the point where a patient should alter his or her diet and give up the basic foods of bread and cereal? — R.K. ANSWER: People with celiac disease have a much higher risk of autoimmune thyroid disease (especially Hashimoto’s, the most common cause of low thyroid) than expected, to the point where everyone with celiac disease should have a blood test to look at thyroid levels. Celiac disease, or intolerance of gluten in general, may have few
or subtle symptoms, and it might be worthwhile to consider testing for celiac disease in people with autoimmune thyroid disease. However, I would not recommend a drastic change in diet for people with thyroid disease if there are no symptoms. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. a personal or professional relationship. This could be the start of a welcome change. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Health matters take on added importance at this time. Deal with them before they interfere with your summer plans. A relationship that cooled off could soon warm up again. LEO (July 23 to August 22) While a few details involving upcoming decisions still need your attention, you fun-loving Felines can begin to spend more time enjoying your lively social life again.
VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) That longsought-after career change could require you to move to another city. Weigh your decision carefully before either accepting or rejecting the offer out of hand. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A workplace situation can be awkward for Librans who prefer to keep their problems private. But you might have to “tell-all” if you hope to see it resolved in your favor. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Although your financial situation starts to improve this week, you still need to be cautious about money matters. Avoid major obligations, for now. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your overall aspects continue to brighten, allowing you to tackle long-deferred challenges.
A change in travel plans could work to your benefit. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) Things seem to be slowing down for the usually restless Sea Goat. But wouldn’t a bit of respite be just what you need right now? Activity picks up by the weekend.
AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Personal relationships take a positive turn for both married and single Aquarians. Professional commitments, however, could be complicated by newly emerging events. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A decision you
thought was final might be reopened as new facts are discovered. This could lead to a short-term problem, but ultimately might prove beneficial. BORN THIS WEEK: Your keen interest in pursuing global events could lead you into a career as a politician or journalist.
Did you know? Playgrounds are meant to be entertaining outdoor respites and places where children can engage in some much-needed fun and exercise. But playgrounds also can be the sites of serious injury and may even contribute to child fatalities. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says that the four equipment pieces most often associated with injuries include climbers, swings, slides, and overhead ladders. The majority of injuries result from falls and equipment failure and take place more often in public playgrounds rather than home play areas. Injuries from playground falls can be serious, ranging from fractured bones to brain and spinal injuries. Deaths resulting from playground injuries are rare, especially in Canada, states
Parachute, a national charitable organization dedicated to preventing injuries. Throughout North America, playground fatalities are most often caused by strangulation. To continue to make playground play safer, parents and children can: • visit only those playgrounds that have safe, soft surfaces beneath the equipment,
• avoid clothing that has cords, drawstrings or straps, such as those on “hoodie” sweatshirts. Neck warmers are safer than scarves, • ensure playground equipment is used only in the manner it was intended, • supervise children at all times on the playground, and • routinely inspect and maintain equipment.

Seeding on pace with five-year average Saskatchewan producers now have 81 per cent of the 2017 crop in the ground, right in line with the five-year (20122016) seeding average for this time of year of 82 per cent. Wet field conditions and frequent rainfall in many northern areas have delayed progress, and producers there will need a couple more weeks of warm and dry weather. Seeding is most advanced in the southeast, where producers have 95 per cent of the crop in the ground. Ninety-four per cent is seeded in the
southwest; 80 per cent in the west-central region; 79 per cent in the east-central region; 76 per cent in the northwest and 43 per cent in the northeast. Ninety-six per cent of lentils, 95 per cent of field peas, 92 per cent of durum, 91 per cent of soybeans, 81 per cent of spring wheat, 80 per cent of flax, 78 per cent of mustard, 76 per cent of canola and 73 per cent of barley have now been seeded. A slow-moving weather system brought significant rainfall to many areas in the north last week, but
missed most of the central and southern parts of the province. The Nipawin area received 65 mm of rain, while many parts of central and southern Saskatchewan received nothing. Fields in the north remain very wet, while many fields in other parts of the province are in need of rain to help crops germinate and emerge. Provincially, cropland topsoil moisture is rated as 11 per cent surplus, 75 per cent adequate, 12 per cent short and two per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is
rated as five per cent surplus, 70 per cent adequate, 23 per cent short and two per cent very short. Overall, emerged crops are in fair-to-excellent condition, but emergence has been delayed in many areas by the cool weather and dry field conditions. The majority of crop damage this week was caused by strong winds, frost, hail, localized flooding and lack of moisture. Flea beetles and cutworms have been reported in canola crops, and some fields have had to be re-seeded. Producers are busy
Looking for searchers By Devin Wilger Staff Writer Parkland Search and Rescue is on the hunt for new members. The group recently held an information meeting to talk to new recruits, discuss what they do and how they help in the community. Shauna Jewhurst and Dale Hintz were two of the members of the group at the event. Their goal is to find anyone interested in the group and get them aware of the responsibilities and rewards of volunteering with Parkland Search and Rescue. One of the focuses for new recruits is training, explains Jewhurst. That starts with first aid, so that if someone does find a missing person who does need help, they can provide it. There is also basic searcher training, so people know what to look for, where they should be going, and how to effectively search for a missing person. There is also training for team leaders, search managers and other bonus training for people who want it. In the presentation to recruits, they note that people who aren’t trained can be a hindrance on an actual search, because they need training to know what to look for and how to handle
evidence. “We train hard so that we get to the point where we know we are doing everything we can in that type of situation... We have a lot of great people who are very enthusiastic, always involved in that training and have no problem whatsoever keeping these skills up not only when we meet as a search and rescue team, but even outside of it, keeping themselves physically and mentally fit.” “You never want to use these skills in real life, because when you’re going out searching there’s a failure, there’s a system that has broken down. If it’s for a senior, if it’s for a child, it’s not good. If we can get trained, we can react in a proper manner, we can get there and shorten up that time, and get a happy end result,” added Hintz. The group would also prefer if they didn’t have to search for people, and Hintz goes to schools to talk to kids and do preventative search and rescue. The program gives kids some outdoor skills, as well as advice on what they should do if they are lost, which can be as simple as finding a tree, pulling out a rescue blanket, and staying put. “That’s how you change a culture, you start with the kids.”
On the same theme, the group is a regular presence at events like the Yorkton Exhibition Summer Fair or the Yorkton Co-op Pumpkin Walk. They are there as support, Hintz says, and to give parents and kids some peace of mind by giving them a place to go if they lose each other. “When you’ve got five or six hundred kids running around, and we all know they don’t always listen to mom and dad. We’re there for support.” People who want to get involved can talk to any member of Parkland Search and Rescue, they are often in the community
and are easy to spot in bright orange clothing. People can also visit http:// sarvac.ca/. Jewhurst noted their goal is to always have a search and rescue team in the region, long after they retire. The importance of volunteering with the group is something that Hintz and Jewhurst believe is rewarding, and they have proof. Both have sons who have followed them into Parkland Search and Rescue. “I think they see, growing up, the commitment and just how important it is in our lives,” said Jewhurst.

Native rangelands are very important A4
June 9, 2017 | This Week Marketplace
Nadia Mori, PAg, Regional Forage Specialist Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture Did you know that Saskatchewan celebrates Native Prairie Appreciation week every third week in June? Both the Ministries of Agriculture and Environment recognize this week as a tribute to the importance of native
PICKS OF THE WEEK “A United Kingdom” (PG-13) — A young African prince studies law in 1940s London. He meets his soulmate, a clerk for a local law firm. But the prince, Seretse Khama (played masterfully by David Oyelowo). is destined to be king of Botswana, and the clerk, Ruth Williams (an effervescent and unflappable Rosamund Pike), is a white woman. What follows is a lesson on what love can overcome. “A United Kingdom” takes us through the deep and complicated real-life story of Seretse and Ruth as they battle racial and political pitfalls while remaining true to their own virtuous, passionate humanity. The story is uplifting, and director Amma Asante’s crisp delivery and pacing unfold without bashing the viewer over the head with morality. “Beauty and the Beast” (PG) — The tale as old as time returns with a liveaction reboot starring the dewy-skinned Emma Watson as Belle and the piercing blue eyes of Dan Stevens (of “Downton Abbey” fame) behind an exquisite re-creation of the Beast. When Belle’s
rangelands in our province. Native rangelands produce many important products. Some are visible, like forage for livestock, habitat for wildlife, and recreational areas for everybody to enjoy. Rangelands also provide services that may not be visible at first glance, such as regulating water flow, cycling nutrients and preserving biodiversity. In
Saskatchewan, it is estimated that about 20% of the original native prairie remains intact. Some fun things to celebrate native rangelands during the month of June: Identify it: search for needle-and-thread, our provincial grass. You can identify it through the distinct twisted awn and big pointed ligule. Treasure it: Find a
father (Kevin Kline) is incarcerated by the ghastly Beast, Belle replaces him as prisoner. With a little help from the castle’s enchanted staff (Emma Thompson, Ian McKellan, Ewan McGregor, et al.) and a few nostalgic songs, the two learn the true meaning of love. Watson soars as the bookish beauty and, as in her portrayal of Hermione Granger in the “Harry Potter” series, her bricolage of brains, spunk and soft vulnerability is perfection. Josh Gad serves up a hilarious and memorable Le Fou, while Luke Evans kills as the gorgeous but vile Gaston. “The Last Word” (R) — Shirley MacLaine once again dons the mantle of cantankerous crank (with a well-hidden heart of gold) that she wears so well. In “The Last Word,” she plays Harriet, exacting control freak of a businesswoman who cannot leave even the writing of her obituary to chance. Enter Anne (Amanda Seyfried), the local newswoman tasked with writing Harriet’s life story. In pursuit of a legacy worth publishing, the two women overcome adversity, make lasting memories, touch the lives of others and change the world. Yes, the cliches are there. Fortunately, MacLaine is a treasure in any vehicle she chooses, and the
“feels” come often enough to make this film tolerable, especially when taken with heavily buttered popcorn. “A Cure for Wellness” (R) — A cutthroat young trader named Mr. Lockhart (Dane DeHaan) is connived into chasing down a company CEO whose decision to reside permanently at a wellness hospital is crimping the company’s style. Upon arrival and after an accident, Lockhart is deemed a patient, and that’s when things start to get weird. What can you say about a film that is too horrifically beautiful to sustain a storyline? Director Gore Verbinski delivers a visual stunner, with scenes designed to cinematic perfection, but the movie cannot hold the attention so long without any substance. “A Cure for Wellness” comes off as more of an eldritch reverie than a plausible tale, and at two and a half hours, you’ll have plenty of down time to peer through its gaping plot holes. By Cindy Elavsky Q: I have been hearing about a new version of “The Tick” being produced. I loved the Patrick Warburton version. Can you give me any information? — Billy B., via email A: Amazon Studios announced a premiere date for its original series “The Tick,” which stars Peter Serafinowicz as The Tick, as well as Griffin Newman, Jackie Earle Haley, Valorie Curry, Scott Speiser and Brendan Hines. The superhero com-
Eating fresh, locally grown strawberries is one of this season’s happiest pleasures. Although available in the supermarket year-round, nothing compares with the taste and beauty of overflowing baskets of bright strawberries at roadside stands and farmer’s markets. Our family enjoys the “pick ‘em yourself” variety at nearby farms, giving us an excuse for an outing in the country and some special memory-making when kids tag along. Here are some tips and ideas for picking (maybe you have the good fortune of picking them in your own garden!) and eating this can’t miss “first of the summer” treat. Before you go picking: —Check online or with friends to get recommendations for a familyfriendly strawberry-picking farm. Check to verify directions and hours. We like to go early morning or evening to avoid hot afternoon sun. —Wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes. They’ll get dusty!
Laurie Davidson edy centers on an underdog accountant with zero powers (Newman) who comes to realize his city is owned by a global supervillain long thought dead.
Take along sunglasses, sunscreen, hats and snacks or a picnic lunch. We also bring containers; young children especially like to carry their own small pail with a handle. When you return: —Hulling strawberries is easy if you push a plastic straw through the pointed end of a strawberry all the way to the opposite end. The stem will pop out, and you won’t waste fruit in the process. —Save any extra hulled berries in the freezer. Arrange in a single layer on a baking sheet. Freeze, then transfer berries to a storage bag or container. —Anytime is a sweet time to eat strawberries. Morning: Slice over a bowl of granola or oatmeal. For a weekend brunch, combine strawberries with blueberries and spoon lavishly over a puff pancake just as it comes out of the oven. Missed the recipe for my Easy Baked Pancake?
takes viewers back in time to Elizabethan England to tell the wild, rowdy story of young William Shakespeare. Newcomer Laurie Davidson plays the title role in this period drama told in a bold, contemporary style and played to a modern soundtrack that exposes all of Shakespeare’s recklessness, lustful temptations and tortured brilliance. Also starring are Olivia DeJonge, Ewen Bremner, Colm Meaney, Mattias Inwood, Jamie Campbell Bower and Jasmin Savoy Brown. Q: A few years ago I saw the movie adaptation of the best-selling book “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” starring Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara and
As he struggles to uncover this conspiracy, he falls in league with a strange blue superhero. “The Tick” will premiere Friday, Aug. 25, on Amazon Prime Video. The seven-episode series was created, written and executive-produced by Ben Edlund (“Gotham,” “Supernatural,” “The Tick” [1994]). Q: I saw a commercial on TNT for a new series about William Shakespeare. Do you know anything about it? — DeeDee F., via Facebook A: As an English- and theater-degree holder, I can say unequivocally that I am excited about this one. “Will” premieres Monday, July 10, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on TNT. becue or get-together with friends. Here’s the recipe: Rinse and dry 1 pint medium-large strawberries (about 20). Melt 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate pieces in the microwave. (Alternatively, melt in the top of a double boiler.) Add 1/2 teaspoon vegetable oil and stir until smooth. Poke a skewer or toothpick into a strawberry and dip the lower half into the chocolate mixture. Place on parchment or waxed paper-lined cookie sheet. Refrigerate uncovered until chocolate is firm. Serve on a small plate with a scoop of ice cream, if you wish. Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on
It’s posted on my blog at donnaerickson.com. Noon: Bring out those frozen berries and pop several in the blender for your favorite smoothie recipe. Night: Toss berries together with fresh greens, toasted pecan halves and crumbled feta cheese. Drizzle with your favorite oil and vinegar dressing for a summery supper salad. Robin Wright. I haven’t heard anything about the development of the rest of the books in the series. Have they given up on it? — Brandon M., via email A: The director’s mantle has been passed to Fede Alvarez (“Evil Dead” and “Don’t Breathe”) for “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” the second book in Stieg Larsson’s series, and this means an all-new cast as well. As of this writing, Fede is eyeing Claire Foy in the role of Lisbeth Salander, the antiestablishment computer expert who savagely rights wrongs. If cast, this would be a major departure for Claire, as most American viewers are accustomed to the talented actress as the prim and proper public television nationwide. Queen Elizabeth in the Netflix original series “The Crown.” The movie is set for release in October 2018. This reboot comes hot on the heels of news that Fede Alvarez, after “Spider’s Web” wraps, will begin work on the sequel to the 1986 cult hit “Labyrinth,” which starred David Bowie as the Goblin King, as well as Jennifer Connelly and a slew of creatures from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. Stay safe during thunderstorms This Week Marketplace | June 9, 2017
Fireworks are not the only thing that light up the sky on warm evenings. Hot, humid weather often presents the ideal conditions for the formation of thunderstorms to form. The National Severe Storms Laboratory estimates that 16 million thunderstorms occur across the globe each year. The NSSL says that, at any given moment, there are 2,000 thunderstorms in progress. In the United States, eight cities in Florida top the Farmer’s Almanac list for the most thunderstormprone areas. The regions’ average conditions can be highly favorable for produ-
cing thunderstorms. Although thunderstorms can be exciting to watch from the safety of indoors, these storms can be strong and dangerous. Thunderstorms are often accompanied by damaging winds and large hail. Thunderstorms can move in very quickly and produce flash flooding conditions. The American Red Cross offers that every thunderstorm produces lightning, which kills more people each year than tornadoes or hurricanes. Despite advance warnings, people are killed or seriously injured by severe thunderstorms each year. Respecting the power of
a thunderstorm can help keep people safe. • Follow the 30/30 lightning safety rule. When lightning flashes, immediately go indoors if you cannot count to 30 before hearing a thunder clap. Remain indoors for 30 minutes after hearing the last rumble of thunder. • Upon hearing thunder, get out of boats, pools and other bodies of water. • Unplug electronic equipment that may be susceptible to damage from power surges caused by lightning hitting power lines. • Be sure to have a flashlight and extra bat-
teries handy in the event of a power outage. • Listen to the local news or NOAA Weather Radio for emergency updates. • Get to higher ground if flash flooding is possible. • Avoid contact with plumbing fixtures, as
water conducts electricity. • Do not try to drive during severe thunderstorms. Afterward, do not drive through standing puddles. They may be too deep to gauge. • Stay away from windows. • If you are caught outdoors, seek shelter if

possible. If shelter is not available, find a low area away from metal areas or tall objects that can attract lightning. Curl into a ball and make yourself as small as possible. • After the storm, stay away from downed power lines and report them immediately.
Reduce sodium intake (NC) — Canadian adults consume an average of 3,092 milligrams of sodium daily. That is more than double the 1,500 milligrams recommendation by Health Canada. In fact, it exceeds the tolerable upper intake level of 2,300 mg. Try these three ways experts recommend for reducing sodium in your diet without cutting back on taste. 1. Use available tools. Cutting sodium might not be as simple as not putting salt in your food. Read the nutrition facts table on your food before you purchase. Look for items that
have a low sodium label or are under 5 per cent of the daily value per serving. 2. Up your produce. Eating more fresh fruits and veggies on regular basis can also help cut out sodium. Try replacing snacks like chips and crackers for carrots or berries. 3. Choose healthy substitutes. Including fresh mushrooms is a quick and healthy way to cut sodium. A 100-gram serving of fresh Canadian white button mushrooms contains only four milligrams of sodium and provides eight per cent of your daily potassium requirement. Mushrooms
also contain umami, which helps boost flavours meaning less salt is required for a great taste. Here are some simple swaps you can make: •Substitute 1/2 cup of white mushrooms for 1/2 cup of cheddar cheese in your omelette or scrambled eggs to save 349 mg of sodium. •Substitute one cup of grilled portabella mushrooms for sausage in pasta to save 632 mg of sodium. •Try white button mushrooms and dip instead of corn chips and dip to save 552 mg of sodium. Find more mushroom information, tips and recipes at www.mushrooms.ca.

HOLLYWOOD — Why did Tom Cruise do a “Mummy” movie? Brendan Fraser’s “The Mummy” (1999) cost $80 million to make and grossed $416 million. His 2001 sequel, “The Mummy Returns,” cost $98 million and grossed $433 million. But “The Scorpion King,” with Dwayne Johnson instead of Fraser, cost just $60 million but only grossed $165 million. His sequel went straight to video, as did “Scorpion King 3,” with Billy Zane and Ron Perlman, and “Scorpion King 4,” with Lou Ferrigno. Universal wanted to revive the franchise, and
Ryan Seacrest Cruise, currently filming “Mission Impossible 6” for a July 2018 release, is getting too old for hardcore action films and needed a new franchise to accommodate his advancing
age (he’ll be 55 on July 3). “The Mummy” has always been played by men (Boris Karloff was the first in 1932), but this time “The Mummy,” opening June 9 in IMAX and 3D, is a woman. Sofia Boutella plays opposite Cruise, as an ancient princess awakened from her crypt beneath the dessert. Opening the same day as “The Mummy” is “The Hero,” with Sam Elliott and Katherine Ross (Elliott is a washed-up Western actor who changes his priorities after being diagnosed with cancer); “It Comes at Night” (a horror story about a man and his family under siege), with Joel Egerton and Elvis Presley’s granddaughter, Riley Keough; and “47 Meters Down” (about two

STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE No seasonal dessert is more luscious than strawberry shortcake, and this biscuit-based version is the classic. •2 cups all-purpose flour •3/4 cup sugar •2 teaspoons baking powder •1/4 teaspoon salt •1/3 cup cold butter or margarine, cut into pieces •2/3 cup milk •2 pints strawberries •1 cup heavy or whipping cream Heat oven to 425 F. I was once told that the day you stop trying to leave a legacy is the day your legacy begins. It has to do with humility and letting your actions speak louder than words. It’s unlikely that there ever will be a Mt. Rushmore for defensive
tackles. Nor is there a good chance that people someday will think about the guy who forced six fumbles over the course of a decade-long football career. They will, however, remember a guy named Cortez Kennedy when they think about what a football player is supposed to be on and off the field. “Tez” was the kind of player you couldn’t ignore. A Hall of Famer who spent all 11 years of his career with the Seattle Seahawks during their raucous ‘90s ...
a graduate of “The U.” A guy universally revered by those who played with him and those who coached him. It was sad to learn of his death at age 48. At the time of this writing, there was no official cause. The morning of his death, it was kind of striking and weird to actually read official Twitter accounts that didn’t make you cringe in embarrassment for a change. Said the Seahawks: “Tez was an NFL Defensive
his success on the field as a great Seattle Seahawk and Miami Hurricane; however, the full story lies in his loving, fun, positive and giving heart. In my many years working in the NFL, no one better exemplified what it meant to be a great player on the field, and yet that paled in comparison to what Cortez meant to the people who knew him off the field. People of all races, religions and nationalities counted him as a friend — athletes and non-athletes alike. We should all aspire to have as big a heart as his!”
Player of the Year, Pro Football Hall of Famer and Seahawks ambassador, but more than his on-field accomplishments, he was a loyal son, father, teammate and friend to many, possessing a largerthan-life personality and an infectious laugh. ... We are proud to have been represented by such a special person.” Said New Orleans Saints general manager Manny Loomis: “Many who will read about him in the coming days will read of
Using chemicals at home (NC) — We all love a clean, tidy house, but did you know that some of the cleaning products we use every day could be exposing us to harmful substances? In fact, improperly used or stored household and automotive chemical products are among the top products responsible for injuries and deaths in children under the age of five. Even a small amount of a chemical product can be harmful to a child. Bad tastes and odours often do not keep children away from household chemical products. Many of us use household chemical products in and around our homes and garages. These include cleaning liquids and powders (such as laundry and dishwasher pods), polishes, drain cleaners, paint thinners and windshield washer fluids. All these products can be dangerous if not handled or stored properly. Health Canada reminds everyone to use household chemicals safely by following this simple four-step process: 1. Read and understand the label before you buy or use a household chemical product. Carefully follow the directions, paying close attention to hazard symbols and cautionary statements. 2. Use household chemical products carefully. Never mix household chemicals together. Check that child-resistant closures are working properly, but remember that child-
resistant doesn’t mean childproof. Make sure containers are closed when they’re put down or not being used. Teach your children to recognize the hazard symbols and know what they mean. 3. Store household chemical products safely in their original containers and make sure all safe-
ty information is readable. Keep all household chemical products safely locked away where children cannot see or reach them. Keep flammable products in a separate building if available, such as a shed, or store according to label instructions. 4. Dispose of leftover household chemical prod-

Perhaps the greatest thing I ever read about the guy — and we’ll surely hear more about his charitable efforts in coming days — came from his first NFL coach, Chuck Knox. He was the guy that gave him number 96 and told him to play defensive tackle ... if that was OK with him. Kennedy’s response: “Put me wherever you want and let the big dog hunt.” Now that is a legacy. Rest in peace, Cortez. You were a killer tackle. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 8-year-old cat “Dawn” seems to be urinating a lot. In the past her litter box has been fairly dry and needed to be scooped only once a day. But now the litter just seems soaked. I did switch to a new brand of cat litter that doesn’t “clump” because I heard it might cause health problems. I haven’t seen Dawn drinking lots of water, but this seems weird. What

While it may just be a peculiarity of a new brand of litter, “soaked” litter doesn’t sound normal to me, either. Excess urination is a signal of a physical problem with your cat. Most owners first think of diabetes, but only the vet can make sure, because other conditions exist that also have excess urination as a symptom. Dawn could be drinking from other water sources besides her water dish, which is why you might not have noticed increased thirst. Here in Texas, we have a special love affair with smoke, heat and meat cooked on a grill. It has taken me years to get my “grillin’ game” on, but today, I’m totally comfortable using a grill. I love the special flavors, textures and aromas you can get only from the right combination of smoke and flame. I recently watched a YouTube video about an awe-inspiring new grill from Summerset Professional Grills. The American Muscle Grill (AMG) is 54 inches of steelencased cooking power. It’s made in the USA and inspired by the 1969 Ford Mustang GT-350 muscle car. The front of the AMG is like the grille of a car, complete with cool lights and retro details. The technology behind the AMG is ultra-modern, and your meats, seafood, vegetables, fruits and breads will be smoked, roasted or seared with its infrared feature to delicious perfection. The solid brass flame-thrower igniters and reversible grates give added control over heat transfer and hot and cool cooking zones AMG is the ultimate in fuel flexibility, and it can burn different fuels either individually or simultaneously using its Multi-Fuel Tray System, which allows you use different fuels in each tray. The trays can hold wood chunks, lump charcoal or briquettes, pellets or wood chips. Grillers cooking with solid fuels can use propane
• Picnic cooler 101: Frozen juice cartons make awesome slushies once they start thawing. You’ll also want to pack your cooler with water and lots of healthy snacks like cheese sticks, apples, sliced oranges and grapes. Remember that your kids will likely make friends at the beach or park, so bring extra. • M.B. in Texas writes: “I have a fairly small bathroom, and storage was a problem. Here’s how I solved it: I bought a large over-the-door shoe hanger. Mine has 24 pouches to hold shampoo, body wash, combs, brushes, hairspray, hair clips, etc. I cleared off my sink and countertop! When the bathroom door is closed, all my essentials are at my fingertips.” • Here’s how to give your cat a pill when all other efforts fail: “Place pill in a plastic baggie and crush with a hammer. I lace it into a hairball cat salve, spread thin and thoroughly onto cat’s paws, and they’ll always lick them clean.” — K.N in Illinois (A note from JoAnn: Make sure that it’s OK to crush the pill before using this dandy tip.)
or natural gas to jumpstart the priming process. This means your solid fuel will be lighted and ready to go in just minutes. You also can cook with just gas or propane. The AMG is available in both a freestanding model, like the one I have, or as a built-in. If you’ve always wanted to upgrade your grilling game, get an American Muscle Grill! It’s the perfect grill for turning my recipe for beautiful, spice-marinated and butterflied Australian Leg of Lamb into a Middle Eastern Shawarma, a dish similar to a Greek gyro. Fire it up! GRILLED AUSTRALIAN LAMB SHAWARMA (Serves 8) The first 10 ingredients are the perfect spice mix for lamb, chicken or fish. •1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil •6 garlic cloves, minced •1 tablespoon ground cumin •1 tablespoon ground cardamom •1 tablespoon paprika •1 tablespoon allspice •1 tablespoon ground ginger •1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper •2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper •1 teaspoon Kosher salt •Zest and juice of 2 lemons •One 6- to 7-pound butterflied leg of lamb • If you suffer from chapped, cracking dry hands, try this tip: At bedtime, apply a generous coating of petroleum jelly. If you have spots, apply only to spots and cover with bandages. If it’s all over, apply to your whole hand and slip on either a pair of cotton gloves or a pair of cotton socks if you don’t have gloves. Leave on overnight, or as long as you can stand it! Do this for at least a week. It should make a big difference. • S.H. in Minnesota advises: “Put dryer sheets in waste baskets to smell good under the bag.” (I use a sprinkle of carpet deodorizer to do this very same thing. The ones made of baking soda both soak up bad smells and put off a lovely scent of their own. — JoAnn) Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

•4 orange or yellow bell peppers, cut into 1/4-inch strips •3 medium red onions, thinly sliced • Yo g u r t sauce, recipe below •10 to 12 pieces of pita bread To prepare Spice Mix Marinade: In a small bowl, mix 1/2 cup of the olive oil with the garlic, cumin, cardamom, paprika, allspice, ginger, crushed red pepper, 1 teaspoon black pepper, 1-1/2 tablespoon salt, and the zest and lemon juice. Reserve 1 tablespoon of spice mix marinade and set aside. Place lamb on a rimmed baking sheet and coat completely with the marinade. Cover and refrigerate overnight or, preferably, for 2 or 3 days, turning it each day. To prepare the Shawarma: Prepare the grill and light it. Toss the bell pepper strips and onion with 1 tablespoon oil and the remaining tablespoon of spice-mix marinade. Place the bell pepper mixture in a grill pan or foil pan. Cover with foil, place it on the cooler side of the grill and cook over moderately low heat, stirring occasionally, until tender,
about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and set on the warming rack, or remove from the grill and keep covered to keep it warm. Grill the butterflied lamb over moderately high heat, turning and shifting often, until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the meat registers 130 F for medium-rare, about 25 minutes. Transfer lamb to a carving board and let rest for 10 minutes. Thickly slice the lamb across the grain and serve with the peppers, onions, yogurt sauce (recipe follows) and
pita bread. Yogurt Sauce •2 green onions, minced, roots removed and discarded, white and green parts •1 garlic clove, finely minced •2 tablespoons chopped parsley •1 cup plain Greek yogurt •1 tablespoon olive oil •1 teaspoon salt •1 teaspoon black pepper •1 tablespoon lemon juice
Combine green onions, garlic, parsley, yogurt, oil, salt, pepper and lemon juice until well-combined. Cover and refrigerate. Safeguard against computer vision syndrome Technology has simplified life in a myriad of ways. Thanks to their tablets and smartphones, many people now have a wealth of information at their disposal 24 hours a day, seven days week. Computers, tablets and smartphones can now be seen just about everywhere, so it’s no wonder that studies have shown that as much as 90 percent of computer users have reported symptoms of computer vision syndrome, or
CVS. Sometimes referred to as “digital eye strain,” CVS is, according to the American Optometric Association, an umbrella term used to describe a group of eye and visionrelated problems that result from prolonged computer use. Manhattan Vision Associates notes that such problems can arise in people who spend two or more hours daily in front of a screen, a qualifier that means just about anyone, from working pro-
fessionals to children, is susceptible to CVS. What are the symptoms of CVS? No two individuals are the same, and some people who spend significant amounts of time may never develop CVS. But those that do may experience the following symptoms. • Eyestrain: When people spend ample time staring at screens, the muscles of their inner eyes
can strain and tighten and cause eye irritation. This can result in fatigue and pain. • Blurred vision: Blurred vision can compromise a person’s ability to see small details. That loss of sharpness can make it hard to focus on a screen for a significant amount of time. In addition, vision can blur as people go back and forth between their keyboards and screens or multiple screens, as many people do while simultaneously working on a computer and using their smartphones. • Headaches: Many people develop headaches after staring at screens for prolonged periods of time. That’s because the brightness and contrast of a screen can produce an indirect glare that’s especially hard on the eyes. • Dry eyes: People do
8th AnnuAl
not blink as often when staring at screens as they do when they are not looking at screens. As a result, people are vulnerable to dry eyes when staring at screens, as blinking is one of the ways the eyes replenish moisture. Can CVS be prevented? While some people may be inclined to accept CVS as a side effect of living in the 21st century, there are ways to prevent CVS. • Take frequent breaks. The AOA recommend that people alleviate digital eye strain by following the 20-20-20 rule. This rule advises taking 20 second breaks to stare at something 20 feet away every 20 minutes. • Reposition your computer screen. The AOA notes that the optimal location for computer screens is between 15
and 20 degrees below eye level, or about four to five inches, as measured from the center of the screen. In addition, position the screen so it is between 20 and 28 inches from your eyes. • Avoid glare. Computer screens also should be positioned to avoid glare from lighting and windows. Draw blinds or drapes if sun is shining in on the screen, and opt for low wattage light bulbs in desk lamps. • Blink more. Make a concerted effort to blink more throughout the day so your eyes remain as moist as possible. The average time people spend staring at screens continues to rise, making CVS a legitimate concern for adults and children alike. Learn more about CVS and how to prevent it at www.aoa.org.

• It was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, beloved cre-
ator of Sherlock Holmes, who made the following
sage observation: “I should dearly love that the world should be ever so little better for my presence. Even on this small stage we have our two sides, and something might be done by throwing all one’s weight on the scale of breadth, tolerance, charity, temperance, peace and kindliness to man and beast. We can’t all strike very big blows,
Be aware of ticks when enjoying the outdoors When the weather warms, yards beckon, hiking trails look even more inviting and even a patch of grass can be a welcoming respite. Lots of fun can be had outside, but caution is needed. While this time of year is prime for outdoor frolicking, it’s also a time when tick populations explode. Ticks are small crawling bugs in the arachnid (spider) family. There are hundreds of different kinds of ticks in the world. The Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation says there are at least 40 species of tick in Canada alone. The creature subsists on meals of blood from a host animal. Ticks can carry bacteria, viruses and other pathogens that can cause serious disease in humans and other animals, states LymeDisease.org. Ticks feed and mate mostly on deer, but rodents, birds, lizards, and just about any other animal can be a host to these nondiscriminatory bugs. Animals carry the diseases, which are then passed through the tick to others. Disease-spreading ticks can be extremely hard to detect because of their diminutive size, especially when they are in the larva or nymph stages. Therefore, preventing tick bites remains the singlebest way to stay ahead of Lyme disease and other illnesses. Understanding tick habitats and behavior can make it easier to avoid them. Ticks will congregate anywhere the animals they feed upon live. Primarily they are located in wooded and grassy areas. Adults will climb up on tall grass waiting for an animal to pass by so they can climb aboard. Nymphs and larvae will live in layers of decomposing leaves under trees. Moisture is a friend to ticks, which are less active in sunny, dry areas. Therefore, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says removing leaf litter, clearing tall grasses and brush and mowing the lawn frequently can help. The following are additional ways to create tick-safe zones at home. • Stack wood neatly in a dry area. • Keep playground equipment and entertaining spaces away from trees and yard edges. • Discourage unwanted animals with fencing. • Prevent tick migration into yards with a three-foot-wide barrier of gravel between lawns and wooded areas. • If desired, employ acaricides (tick pesticides) to reduce the number of ticks in your yard. On the go When enjoying the great outdoors, avoid tall grasses and stay on trails. Wear tall socks or pants during hikes to prevent ticks from latching on. A thorough inspection of the body is adviseable each time people return indoors. Check hidden areas, such as behind the knees, under the arms and in other skin-fold areas,

and even the little ones count for something.” • In France, writing a bad check is not just bad form — it’s illegal. Violators of the “cheque sans provision” law are subject to criminal fines and can be banned from writing checks for up to five years. • You might be shocked if you came across the term “lust-house” in, say, a newspaper. You shouldn’t be, though — it doesn’t mean what you think it means. The term comes to us (unsurprisingly) from German, where the word might refer to either a country house or a tavern with a beer garden. • There was a time when the game of checkers was commonly — and condescendingly — called

Joy after stroke (NC) — Stroke inflicts varying degrees of lifestyle changes, impairments and challenges for over 400,000 Canadians each year. The uphill battle faced by stroke patients is different for each survivor, however with the help of specialized medical professionals in the field, the path to recovery is made smoother. Dr. Tania Henriques, a rehabilitation physician based in Burlington, Ontario, recognizes the commonality of stroke today and has dedicated her life to helping patients come to terms with lingering impairments. “In a multi-faceted approach, a patient’s comprehensive history is recorded before assessing the diversity of possible issues,” she explains. “After a stroke, we can’t predict how greatly affected or disabled a patient will be until we’ve understood their goals, lifestyles and aspirations.” Both basic and instrumental activities of daily living are impacted differently in stroke survivors. The quality of life for a pianist will suffer immensely after showing signs of even mild finger weakness or tightness. This patient’s joy found in playing the piano is removed, and medical professionals are left to determine a

course of treatment to bring back that joy in some capacity. Patients’ life aspirations matter as treatment plans will cater to the individual, not just to the disease. “We need to make more physicians, nurses and Personal Support Workers aware of the delayed onset of limb spasticity and the coinciding resources and specialists now available,” says Dr. Henriques. For limb spasticity, be sure to consult your physician since there are medications such as muscle relaxants, benzodiazepines (sedatives/antianxiety drugs) and injectable treatments, which can all help promote muscle relaxation. The doctor points out that injectable treatments are a lesser known option. Botulinum toxin, for example, is helping to improve certain impairments quickly compared to long-term rehab plans. “Patients can appreciate a treatment that can give them noticeable results,” she says, “along with the ability to use a limb again, to practice better hygiene and to improve ease of dressing.” More information on stroke recovery and resources is available at www.beyondstroke.ca.

Use beer to make tastier tacos Tacos are a beloved dish, and few things complement a tasty taco better than a cold beer. Ambitious home cooks who want to combine these two tailormade companions can thank the Stone Brewing Co. for the following recipe for “Arrogant Bastard Ale Avocado Tacos,” which can be found in John Holl’s “The American Craft Beer Cookbook” (Storey). This recipe is great for avocado lovers and vegetarians or anyone who simply enjoys a good taco. ARROGANT BASTARD ALE AVOCADO TACOS Makes 6 to 8 servings Salsa Fresca •1-1⁄2 cups seeded and diced plum tomatoes •1⁄4 cup diced yellow onion •1⁄4 cup seeded and finely diced jalapeño peppers •1⁄4 cup lime juice •2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh cilantro leaves •Salt and freshly ground black pepper Arrogant Bastard Ale Battered Avocados •2 cups Stone Arrogant Bastard Ale, chilled •3⁄4 teaspoon Cajun spice blend •1⁄2 teaspoon ground dried chipotle chiles •1⁄2 teaspoon granulated garlic •1⁄2 teaspoon kosher salt •1⁄2 teaspoon smoked paprika
•1 cup all-purpose flour •1 teaspoon baking powder •4-1⁄2 ripe avocados, peeled, pitted and quartered •2 cups panko breadcrumbs •Salt Tacos •1 cup Stone Levitation Ale BBQ Sauce, or similar barbecue sauce •18 small corn tortillas •1 cup grated Asiago cheese •Microgreens or chopped fresh parsley, for garnish To make the Salsa Fresca: Combine the tomatoes, onion, jalapeños, lime juice, and cilantro in a bowl and stir to combine. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or up to 3 days to allow the flavors to mingle. To make the batter: Pour the ale into a narrow, highsided container. Stir in the Cajun spice blend, chiles, garlic, salt, and paprika. Sift the flour and baking powder together in a

small bowl, then add them to the beer mixture slowly, whisking well until the ingredients are thoroughly incorporated. Add more flour if necessary to create a tempura-style batter for coating the avocados. Set the batter aside. Preheat the oven to 200 F. Prepare a deep fryer or pour 2 to 3 inches of oil into a deep cast iron or heavy pot that is at least 4 inches deep. Heat the oil to 360 F. Pour the breadcrumbs into a shallow dish. Use tongs to grab the avocado quarters and dunk them in the prepared batter. Shake off any excess and roll the avocados in the breadcrumbs to coat all sides. Fry the avocados in batches until golden brown, 1 to 21⁄2 minutes each. (Do not overcrowd the pot, as this will lower the temperature of the oil significantly.) Transfer the cooked avocados to a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Season with a sprinkling of salt and keep them in the oven until the entire batch is ready. Assemble the tacos: Heat the barbecue sauce in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until heated through. Warm the tortillas on a griddle or in the oven, if desired. Place one avocado quarter on each of the tortillas. Top each avocado with the warm barbecue sauce, salsa, cheese, and microgreens. Serve immediately.

Quickly put in the chicken pieces in a single layer and brown on both sides. Remove and spread out on a plate, leaving the oil and spices behind. Take the pan off the heat briefly and put into it the lentils, turmeric and 5 cups of water. Put the pan back on high heat and bring to a Auctions

simmer. Cover partially and cook gently for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, sprinkle 1⁄2 teaspoon of the salt, lots of black pepper, 1⁄2 teaspoon of the garam masala, and the lemon juice on both sides of the chicken pieces. Rub in and set aside. When the lentils have cooked for 20 minutes, put in the chicken and all its accumulated juices, the green beans and 1-1⁄2 teaspoons salt. Stir and bring to a simmer. Cover, turn the heat to low and cook gently for another 20 minutes, stirring now and then. Heart disease affects women of all ages. The symptoms can be somewhat silent or not what many women may normally associate with heart disease. The symptoms of heart disease in women also may differ from those experienced by men. The Mayo Clinic says the most common heart attack symptom in women is a type of pain or discomfort in the chest. However, women also may experience seemingly unrelated symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, sweating, unusual fatigue, abdominal discomfort, or lightheadedness. Recognizing these symptoms can help women get early treatment that may save their lives.
