Doukhobors celebrate history in Veregin By Devin Wilger Staff Writer It wasn’t an easy path for the Doukhobors. Facing persecution in their home country in Russia for their pacifism in the face of conflict, the group came to Canada and settled in Saskatchewan, where – going by contemporary stories in the archive of Yorkton This Week – they were regarded with a great deal of suspicion. The people did not give up, and an example of their efforts to establish themselves in Canada still stands in Verigin. The National Doukhobor Heritage Village celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Prayer Home in Verigin, with song, celebration and visits from descendents of Peter Vasilevich Verigin, the man who originally built the prayer home in the village. Linda Osachoff, board member of the museum, says that the event is a celebration of foundation of the Doukhobor faith, pacifism, peace and love. “Those values are more important today than they ever have been before, in the world of crisis we live in.” The 100th anniversary is also a way to celebrate the forefathers and mothers who established the Doukhobors in Canada and the struggles they went through to be able to practice their faith in an unfamiliar country, Osachoff explains. “They were unwelcome in Russia because they refused to fight, and they also began a religion
that really internalized Christianity rather than externalized it. Rather than having a hierarchy of leaders we all see the divine in one another. So it’s really contemporary way of seeing a higher power as well as being rooted in tradition.” While it has been 100 years since the prayer home was established, Osachoff believes that the Doukhobor faith was ahead of its time, and a solution for a world in pain. “That’s what is so wonderful about being a Doukhobor. Even though the traditions are rooted in the past, they came out of hardship. When you look at a hurting world now, we are in a period of hardship. The precepts of toil, peaceful life, being kind to one another, small acts of kindness being so important, are more valuable than they have ever been before. It’s so easy to contemporize an ancient religion in the face of today’s world.”
The weekend has gone “beyond their wildest expectations,” Osachoff says, with highlights being a Doukhobor choir
from BC which performed in traditional garb, as well as a weekend filled with guests. “The roof simply lifted
with joyous praise, it was wonderful.”

Regina, SK, July 13, 2017 — During a fifth anniversary open house at the STARS Regina base today, The Mosaic Company announced a major gift of $2.5 million to STARS, reinforcing the company’s ongoing support of the air ambulance service, and helping to ensure that STARS can continue to save lives across the province. Including this latest commitment, Mosaic has given more than $8 million to STARS in Saskatchewan. The company was one of the earliest donors in Saskatchewan,
initially providing $5.5 million toward the Regina hangar and a BK 117 helicopter to literally get operations off the ground five years ago. “Mosaic partners with organizations that enhance the sustainability of our business and the communities where we operate,” said Bruce Bodine, Mosaic’s senior vice president, potash. In announcing today’s generous gift, Bodine stressed the importance of STARS, especially for those working or living in remote locations across the province. “Our pot-
ash operations are located in rural Saskatchewan, and our employees reside in many small communities that benefit from the addition of this service. If an incident were to happen at one of our facilities or a nearby community, we know that STARS is ready to help,” said Bodine. Mosaic’s sizable donation will be directed toward the operation of STARS’ helicopter air ambulance bases in Regina and Saskatoon. The provincial government provides approximately 50 per cent of the funds needed to run STARS
in Saskatchewan, meaning the STARS Foundation must raise the remaining $10.5 million annually. “We are forever grateful to early corporate donors like Mosaic who were instrumental in establishing STARS in our province,” said Denise Belman, executive director of the STARS Foundation, Saskatchewan. “For us, it’s all about the patient, and we are honoured that Mosaic is renewing their commitment to our organization, enabling us to continue providing worldclass emergency air medical
care and transport to those who need it most.” Since establishing operations in Saskatchewan in 2012, STARS has flown over 4,000 missions to more than 500 communities across the province. These missions would not have been possible without the unwavering support of a wide range of allies including donors, chain of survival partners and the community. Today’s fifth anniversary open house was a celebration of that accomplishment, and it gave the public a behind-the-scenes look at STARS’ operations.

Kienle sizzles in the heat Plus-30 degree temperatures and the always technical Asessippi National Disc Golf Course proved a challenging combination at a weekend of events at Asessippi Beach and Campground on the weekend. In fact before the weekend was over eight discs would be claimed by the course, six lost in the trees, and two to the waters of the Asessippi River. “The hot weather was definitely a factor, and the wind on day two, but that’s all part of an event scheduled months earlier, you play through whatever weather Mother Nature throws at you,” said Trevor Lyons, Tournament Director, with the Parkland Association of Disc Golf. “The weather might have been more moderate, although riding my golf cart it wasn’t so bad,” added Rick Goraluk, coowner of the campground and course. “And a local wedding kept a few of the local throwers at home, but for only our second annual
event we were satisfied. I think everybody had a lot of fun.” Saturday the course hosted its annual Parkland Association of Disc Golf Tournament Series event. The opening round left players drenched with sweat, and questioning their fortitude to return to the hilled course for a second 18 after lunch. But the golfers did head out, with Mark Kienle from Wadena, SK., handling the heat the best throwing a minus-two 112 to take first place. “I am really happy I was able to make it to this tournament and play this course,” said Kienle. “The course itself was challenging with lots of areas to get into trouble; trees, bushes, out-ofbounds, and straight drop off slopes. However that’s what makes a really fun course to play on, with challenging holes like 1, 4, 8 and 15. There is something for everyone.” Kienle said the key to his win came down to trying to stay steady through two rounds. “I had lots of the same type of golf as everyone else, I lost a couple discs (one was found :) took some bogies,” he said. “But I kept it consistent, I shot the same score in each round.” Mark Kienle, left, accepts congraduThat said lations from Parkland Association Kienle said he of Disc Golf Tournament Chair tried to handle Trevor Lyons following his win at the challenges as best he Asessippi Beach and Campground.
could by “playing smart golf, there is a lot of open ground but with o.b (out-ofbounds), rough to keep you on the fairway. So if you want to go for it, you will get caught in some rough. “Smart play can save some of those strokes.” He added, “the elevation changes can mess with you judgment, holes seem shorter/longer and you can really fade hard downhill usually not in the direction you want.” Kienle was asked what he sees as the strength of his game. “Playing for the fun of the game,” he said. “I really try not to get down on my game. As long as I can have fun playing with other disc golfers it’s a good round.” In the end Kienle said it was a great event to be part of. “Overall this was a great tournament and I would like to thank the Asessippi National Disc Golf Course for hosting the tournament as well as; Asessippi Beach and Campground, PADG and their members, Trevor the tournament director and Calvin Daniels. It’s awesome to see the sport of disc golf growing,” he said. Josh Gregory of Melville, SK place second with a plus-six 120, with Lukas Leimhoffer of Inglis, MB, third with a plus-12 126. The top two finishers, as PADG members qualified for the Farrell Agencies Champions Challenge to be held this year at the Asessippi National course in October. Kienle becomes the fifth qualifier for the event, with Gregory
having already made the final with an early second place finish at the Home Inn & Suites Open event in Bredenbury, SK. Topping the ladies was Becky Musqua of Melville. SK. with a 165 (+51). Golfers didn’t have long to rest before heading out Saturday evening for a ‘best throw’ doubles event, with the single rule that teams had to use nine tee throws for each member of the pair. Top spot went to the duo Sebastian and Lukas Leimhofer with a 51 (-6). Rick Goraluk and Karl Kreutner both of Inglis, MB teamed to shoot a 54 (-3) for second while the Yorkton, SK. pair of Trevor Lyons and Calvin Daniels shot a 60 (+3) for third. Sunday morning, there were clouds, wind and a shower, awaiting disc golfers going out for a singleround fun tourney. Lyons would top the field at 67 (+10). Karl Kreutner - 69 (+12) was second, and Gregory 69 (+12), the tie being broken on a count back. Plans are already under way for the third annual event in 2018, to be held July 14 and 15. “Before this year’s event was even over we were discussing next year,” said Goraluk. “While we will make final decisions into the next year we are looking at a barbeque supper Saturday night, maybe live entertainment that night too, and some events like a bull’s eye shoot off from the big hill to the ball field below, which players will know about.” Calvin Daniels, chair of
the PADG said he is certainly supportive of adding a social aspect to some of the summer tournament events. “The chance to camp out with a bunch of our players, eat some good food, listen to some music, talk some disc golf and have some fun is just a great idea,” he said. “We want disc golf to be competitive at our tournaments, but there is a place for family and camaraderie too. “Rick and Karen are great hosts, and with the campground we hope it will be a weekend must where players pack their
discs in the camper, or grab their tents and join us for the annual tournament.” --Submitted by the Parkland Association of Disc Golf BAKER’S DOZEN GLUTEN FREE BREAD CLUB

PICKS OF THE WEEK “The Fate of the Furious” (PG-13) — Dom (Vin Diesel) and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) are on their honeymoon, and the Furious crew enjoy a moment of peace — that is, until the mysterious Cipher (Charlize Theron) enters the picture, threatening and coercing Dom into going rogue to do her nefarious bidding. But his team isn’t going to stand for her maneuvering, not when family is on the line. They go in for the rescue, and must bring Dom home and stop Cipher’s sinister plot. This billion-dollar gang of big names (Dwayne Johnson, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Jason Statham, Kurt Russell, Scott Eastwood) brings the speed with complex, earth-shaking stunts and cars that will drive you over the edge of your seat. “Smurfs, The Lost Village” (PG) — The beloved blue forest creatures are back at it, this time on a girlpower adventure with Smurf Village’s only lovely lady: Smurfette (voiced by Demi Lovato). After Smurfette spies what she thinks is another Smurf in the forest, she and pals Hefty (Joe Manganiello), Brainy (Danny Pudi) and Clumsy (Jack McBrayer) defy Papa Smurf and go on a delightfully determined mission to find the Lost Smurf Village. Armed with a handy map, the four friends are hot on the trail — with Gargamel (Rainn Wilson) and posse not far behind. What they find will shock and delight, and in the end, bring meaning and clarity to Smurfette’s life. Julia Roberts, Michelle Rodriguez and Ellie Kemper also star. “Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer” (R) — Richard Gere stars as the titular Norman, a man who, cell phone ever in hand, embodies the behind-the-scenes operator, exuding influence
both real and imaginary. As a hustler and “strategist” he wheedles an invitation to a dinner party from young Israeli dignitary Micha Eshel (Lior Ashkenazi), and in a display of cachet and largess, he buys the man a very expensive pair of shoes. The man is impressed and a connection is made. Years later, when Micha becomes prime minister of Israel, it seems Norman’s credibility is

The Psycho-Spiritual Mantra of Rock” (NR) — Come for the iconic album covers, and stick around for the back story as director Barnaby Clay presents the charismatic stylings of an honest to god rock and roll photographer named Mick Rock. Yes, that’s his actual name and, yes, if you love music, you’ll want to listen to his stories. Never self-aggrandizing, filled with humor and life, Rock’s reminisces include Lou Reed, Queen, Debbie Harry, David Bowie, Iggy Pop and more.

I call summertime zucchini season because it is so abundant in farmers markets and backyard gardens. Anyone who has grown zucchini knows that a little planting goes a long way. Nothing inspires a gardener to be generous to friends and neighbors like an abundant crop of zucchini! Zucchini is the most popular squash in the U.S. It can be eaten raw with dip or added to salad, stirfry, soups, casseroles and mixed vegetables. It also can be served as a side dish — freshly sauteed by itself or with other summer squash. As long as it’s not fried, zucchini is a very low-calorie vegetable — 1/2 cup of cooked zucchini is just 18 calories and has 1 gram of protein. Zucchini is 94 percent water. There is no recommendation for canning zucchini because of its high water content, which causes zucchini to get soft and tightly packed during the canning process. This makes it hard for zucchi-
HOLLYWOOD — Daniel Day Lewis, the only actor to win three best actor Oscars — for “My Left Foot” (1989), “There Will Be Blood” (2007) and “Lincoln” (2012) — has decided to quit acting and retire. He is 60. Jack Nicholson won three Oscars, though one was as supporting actor for “Terms of Endearment” (1983). Lewis has always been a private person and gave no reason for this momentous decision, but the fact he’s now living in Ireland could signal he feels his greatest role will be raising his sons. Lewis has three boys: Gabriel was born in 1995 while he was partnered with actress Isabelle Adjani (19891995), and Ron and Cashel are from his marriage to the daughter of American playwright Arthur Miller, Rebecca, whom he married in 1996. If he stays true to his word, his last film will be “Phantom Thread” (about the London couture fashion world of 1950s) with his “There Will Be Blood”
ni to reach the required temperatures it needs to assure safety for low-acid foods. Maybe you’ve run out of ways to prepare zucchini, and friends and neighbors are no longer returning your phone calls. Here are some recipes to transform your abundant crop into tasty snacks, plus tips for preserving your bumper crop for future dishes. And remember, with zucchini recipes, you’re only limited by your imagination! SUMMERTIME ZUCCHINI PASTA •2 tablespoons extravirgin olive oil •1 small onion, finely diced •2 pounds zucchini, sliced into 1/4-inch-thick pieces (cut larger zucchini in half lengthwise before slicing) •1 teaspoon salt •1 teaspoon ground black pepper •2 garlic cloves, minced •1 ounce basil, about 2 cups loose leaves •1 pound ziti or other dry pasta •8 ounces ricotta, about 1 cup •1/8 teaspoon crushed
Daniel Day Lewis director Paul Thomas Anderson at the helm. The film will be released Christmas Day. Meryl Streep, who also has won three Oscars — though one was for supporting actress in “Kramer vs Kramer” (1979) — still has to win two more best actress Oscars just to tie Katherine Hepburn’s four best actress Oscars. Before we see her in “Mary Poppins Returns” (out Christmas 2018), she’ll appear in the historical drama “The Papers,” being produced and directed by Steven Spielberg. It’s about a cover-up spanning four presidents that forces Kay Graham, the first female publisher of The Washington Post, to
Put a pot of water on to boil. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook onions in 3 tablespoons olive oil until softened, 5 to 8 minutes. Reduce heat as necessary to keep onions from browning. Add zucchini, season generously with salt and pepper, and continue cooking, stirring occasionally until rather soft, about 10 minutes. Turn off heat. Meanwhile, use a mortar and pestle to pound garlic, basil and a little salt into a rough paste (or use a mini food processor). Stir in 3 tablespoons olive oil. Salt the pasta water well and put in the pasta, stirring. Boil per package instructions but make sure to keep pasta quite al dente. Drain pasta, reserving 1 cup of cooking water. Add cooked pasta to zucchini in skillet and turn heat to medium-high. Add 1/2 cup cooking water, then the ricotta, crushed red pepper and lemon zest, stirring to distribute. Check seasoning and adjust. Cook 1 minute more. Mixture should look creamy. Add a little more pasta water if necessary. Add the basil paste and half the grated cheese and work with its hard-driving editor, Ben Bradlee (being played by Tom Hanks) as a battle ensues between journalists and the government (sound familiar and topical?) causing them to publish “The Pentagon Papers.” The cast also includes Bruce Greenwood, Matthew Rys and Bradley Whitford. “The Papers” opens Dec. 22. George Clooney lost money producing “Our Brand is Crisis” (2015), with Sandra Bullock ($28 million cost/$8.6 million gross) but scored with “Money Monster” (2016), with Julia Roberts ($27 million cost/$93 million gross). Now he has really scored, selling his four-year-old tequila company, Casamigos (which means house of friends), along with partners Rande Gerber and Mike Meldman, to the Londonbased spirits giant Diageo for $1 billion. Diageo is giving them $700 million now and $300 million over the next 10 years. Clooney has completed producing “Suburbicon,” with Matt Damon and Julianne Moore, due Nov. 3, and “Ocean’s Eight,” with Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway
quickly stir to incorporate. Spoon pasta into warm soup plates and sprinkle with additional cheese. Serve immediately. To freeze slices: Choose young, tender zucchini. Wash and cut it into 1/2-inch slices. Blanch in boiling water for 3 minutes. Cool promptly in ice-cold water. Drain and package in freezer bags or containers, leaving 1/2inch head space. Seal and freeze. To freeze grated zucchini: Choose young, tender zucchini. Wash and grate zucchini, then water blanch it for 1 to 2 minutes or until it is translucent. Put the zucchini in freezer containers and place the containers in cold water to cool it off. Seal and freeze. Pour off excess water when the zucchini thaws. Freezing tip: Divide zucchini into portions so each container has just the amount needed for one recipe or meal. This way you won’t have to thaw more than you need. Dehydrated zucchini: Choose young, slender zucchini. Wash and cut into 1/4-inch slices for cooking purposes, or 1/8inch slices for chips. Dry in a single layer in a 125 F oven until brittle. Use slices in soups and casseroles, or sprinkle zucchini chips with seasoned salt and serve with dips. Angela Shelf Medearis

If Stephen Curry never scores another point for Golden State, he’ll still be worth every penny of the “supermax” contract he signed with the Warriors on the first day of free agency. The deal, which will pay Curry $201 million over the next five seasons, is the largest in NBA history. When you judge Curry’s performance over the past few years — three NBA Finals and two championships, record-setting regular seasons and playoff runs — it’s clear that he is well worth the risk going ahead. But if you’re Warriors owner Joe Lacob, you can look back to how much you’ve made to know he’s worth the investment. When Lacob bought the team, the Warriors were worth $450 million. Today, they’re worth $2.6 billion. That’s an astounding return on investment. Ludicrous, even. So ludicrous, it has NBA players actually criticizing the Curry deal as being too small. Lebron James was the first to speak out on the deal on Twitter because he is the King and as we all know, Twitter is the communication medium of

Steph should be getting 400M this summer 5yrs. — LeBron James (@KingJames) July 1, 2017 James is taking issue with the salary cap in the NBA, the cap that Curry head-butted with his deal. James feels that Curry was worth double, and it’s hard to argue the fact. What team owner wouldn’t want to see their team’s value increase four or five times over? The NBA has a collective bargaining agreement and a salary cap, designed to control costs and increase ownership’s profits. It works by calculating a percentage of the league’s revenue from the previous season. It allows for teams to pay over the calculation to a degree, but then the team is charged a luxury tax. For this coming season, the salary cap was set at $99 million and the luxury tax was at $119 million. That’s the formula that was used to pay Curry. James — and every other player in the league — feels that market factors should prevail. The NBA players association will be renegotiating the bargaining agreement next year, and James himself will be a part of the team of negotiators. “Remember, we all stumble, every one of us. That’s why it’s a comfort to go hand in hand.” • The very first drive-
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I am commenting on your answer to the owners worried about their dog being bitten by a snake while on vacation out West. The rattlesnake vaccine is actually only $64; the treatment is well over $1,000 per vial of
antivenin. If a pet has the vaccine, it is highly possible that it may not need the antivenin. The vaccine should be given to all dogs at risk for snakebite. Please advise your readers to contact their local veterinarian. — Rebecca O., Trinity County, California DEAR REBECCA: Thank you for the correction! I did a little more digging and found detailed advice at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine’s website. The snakebite vaccine itself, developed in the early
thru fast-food restaurant opened in 1948, in Baldwin Park, California. The idea was obviously a success — by 1990, In-N-Out burger had 60 locations, all in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The private, familyowned chain now has 313 locations across six states. • You probably didn’t know that Little Miss Muffet was a real person. It’s true — Dr. Thomas Muffet wrote the nursery rhyme for his daughter, Patience.
• If you’re fortunate enough to be planning a trip to the Southeast Asian nation of Cambodia — home to the 12th-century temple complex and UNESCO World Heritage Site Angkor Wat — keep an eye out for some local comestibles. If you get hungry, you can try out a local delicacy such as deep-fried tarantula. If you’re feeling ill (and particularly daring), try out a medicinal liquor — there’s a popular one that is made
by putting live spiders into rice wine. • Those who study such things say that the most widely used word in the world is “okay” — though the spelling varies widely. • You might be surprised to learn that 7 percent of American adults — that’s 17.3 million people — believe that chocolate milk comes from brown cows. The same survey, conducted by the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy in May of this year,
2000s, is quite inexpensive compared to treatment for a rattlesnake bite. That can run well above $1,000, as you noted. It’s important to keep in mind, as the website notes, that the vaccine isn’t complete protection. Its greatest benefit is that it buys your dog time after a snakebite so that you can get it to a veterinarian for emergency treatment with antivenin. According to the manufacturer, a vaccinated dog bitten by a poisonous snake needs to get to the vet within 12 hours for further treat-
ment. Frequent boosters (every 4 to 6 months) may be required. It’s important to keep in mind that snakebites are generally very rare at national parks, especially if pets and people stay within trail boundaries.
Parks have leash requirements so that your pet stays within your sight and control at all times, further minimizing the risk of a bite. Send your questions, comments and tips to ask@ pawscorner.com.

In food processor, with knife blade attached, blend frozen fruit until fruit resembles finely shaved ice, stopping processor occasionally to scrape down sides. If fruit is not finely shaved, dessert will not be smooth.
Add yogurt, sugar, lemon juice and almond extract, and process just until mixture is smooth and creamy, scraping down sides occasionally. Serve immediately. Or, spoon into freezer-safe containers and freeze to serve later; let stand at room temperature 10 minutes to soften slightly before serving. Makes about 2-1/2 cups. TIP: If you want to freeze fresh fruit yourself, spread a single layer of whole berries, pitted cher-

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 86-year-old male who unfortunately lost my sense of smell and, to a large degree, my sense of taste as a result of taking fluticasone propionate nasal spray (50 mcg, one spray in each nostril once a day). This drug was prescribed by my doctor. After finding out that I could not smell fresh coffee even when I put my face over the open container and sniffed, I knew I had a problem. I mentioned this to another doctor (the prescribing doctor had transferred), and he casually mentioned that that happens and that it could take a year to come back. Well, the year has come and gone, and I haven’t regained my sense of smell. The literature that accompanies this drug does mention that a possible side effect is the loss of the senses of smell and taste. But this comes only after reading through more than five columns of small print. It may not seem like
a big deal to be unable to smell the coffee, but I am also unable to smell natural gas, and living in a house with a furnace, hot water heater, clothes dryer and cooktop stove all powered by natural gas, it becomes a serious problem. I am hoping that you can give me some advice as to how I can restore my senses of smell and taste. — T.K. ANSWER: I certainly found the warning that fluticasone, like other nasal steroids, can cause alterations in taste and smell. However, I couldn’t find in the published literature a case of someone losing his or her sense of smell entirely from nasal steroids. Some blood pressure medicines have been known to do it, as can nutritional deficiencies, tumors and Sjogren’s syndrome. Exposure to some chemicals can cause temporary loss of smell. Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases sometimes cause loss of sense of smell. Anytime the sense of smell is lost, most people notice a dramatic loss of taste as well: This may be because the aromas of food are the most important contributor to flavor. Unfortunately, after a year it is likely the loss will be permanent, and I don’t know of any way to bring it back. When
researching your question, I found many references to studies that looked at fluticasone as a treatment for loss of sense of smell, which gives further evidence to the unfortunate and unusual apparent cause in your case. It worries me that your new doctor was so casual about this loss: It IS a big issue,
and it sounds like he may not have evaluated you for other possible causes. DR. ROACH WRITES: I got some good advice about my column on improving patient-physician communication. One tip I received, and one which I often recommend for my patients, is to make a list of the important questions
you want to ask your doctor. Another is to bring someone with you. Finally, doctors can help by providing not only verbal advice, but written advice as well. This isn’t always necessary or even possible, but often it can really improve the patient’s understanding. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer

By Cindy Elavsky Q: Can you tell me what my favorite actor, Kevin Bacon, has been up to lately? — Brian F., via email A: The prolific and talented actor is currently working with Jason Blum on a pilot of his 1990 culthit comedy/horror movie “Tremors.” They are developing an eight-episode series based on the movie for the SyFy network. Kevin will star in and produce the series, returning as lead character Valentine McKee, a handyman in a small Nevada town who battles for his life, and the lives of the townsfolk, against giant man-eating sandworms. There is no word on whether any of the other stars of the movie will return, but then again, did anyone except Kevin’s character survive? It’s been so long, I can’t remember. Looks like I have my Friday movie night planned out! Q: Is it true that there is going to be another installment of my favorite scary movie, “The Conjuring”? — Larry K., Galveston, Texas A: New Line recently announced that “The Conjuring 3” is indeed in the works. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are expected to return as Ed and Lorraine Warren, the husband-and-wife team of paranormal researchers. The plot of this installment will come from the case files of the Warrens, and you can bet it will be just as scary as the first two films. Since it’s in the very early stages of development, details such as plot, premiere date, costars, etc., are not yet available. Q: I’ve watched quite a few original Netflix feature films, and I always find them enjoyable and compelling. Can you tell me any new ones I should look out for? -- Xavier R.,
via email A: I just got word that Netflix won the rights to an as-yet-untitled drama set in the art world and starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo (one of my favorite actresses). The movie was written by Dan Gilroy, who also will direct. You may remember that Dan directed Jake and Renee in the film “Nightcrawler,” so it’ll be interesting to get the team back together and see what they create. If you want to get your Jake fill before then, his Netflixoriginal movie “Okja,” which recently competed at the Cannes Film Festival, is now available for streaming. It also stars Tilda Swinton and Paul Dano. Q: I loved James Franco in Hulu’s “11.22.63.” What does he have coming up? — Nina H. in Florida A: James is once again teaming up with Stephen King and Hulu. He has signed on to “Castle Rock,” which is based on the stories of Stephen King, intertwining characters and themes from the fictional town of Castle Rock. The series stars Andre Holland and Sissy Spacek, with Sissy playing Ruth Deaver, the estranged adoptive mother of Henry (Andre), a retired professor with fading memories and a complicated history about the town. The series is set to premiere in 2018. Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803; or e-mail her at letters@cindyelavsky.com.
