HOLLYWOOD — We told you that Daniel Craig, who said, “I’d rather slash my wrists than do another Bond film,” was sure to sign for the next Bond movie, tentatively titled “Bond 25.” What was really happening was that Craig was already contracted for the next Bond film, which producers conveniently didn’t tell us because they were trying to get Craig to sign for an additional 007 film. They stood by while columnists rambled on about Idris Elba and Tom Hiddleston as the next Bond. That’s why he’d been offered $150 million to return for an additional Bond film. To sweeten the deal, Christopher Nolan, riding high on rave reviews for “Dunkirk,” is all but set to direct, something produc-

Benedict Cumberbatch ers knew would appeal to him as well. Quite a raise in pay grade for 007; Craig was paid “only” $39 million for his last Bond film, “Spectre.” Oscar-nominee and Emmy-winner Benedict Cumberbatch will do at least three more films as “Doctor Strange”: “Thor: Ragnarok,” due Nov. 3;

“Avengers: Infinity War,” due May 4; and the untitled “Avengers” sequel, due May 2019. Somewhere in between he’ll star in another “Doctor Strange,” now in development. When a film costs $165 million and grosses $670 million, you can bet a sequel is in the works. In addition, he has “The Current War,” with Michael Shannon, Nicholas Hoult and Tom Holland (“Spiderman”), due Dec. 22; the animated fantasy “Magik,” with Matthew Goode; will be the voice of Shere Khan in the new live-action “Jungle Book” (out October 2018); and will voice the Grinch in a new animated version of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” opening November 2018. Could it be that he and wife Sophie Hunter, who have two young sons, wanted animated films the boys can watch? Mark Wahlberg, who hit

it big with “Transformers: The Last Knight,” will have “Daddy’s Home 2,” with Will Ferrell, John Cena, John Lithgow and Mel Gibson, opening Nov. 10. The original “Daddy’s Home” cost $69 million and grossed $243 million. He’s currently shooting the Ridley Scott crime drama “All the Money in the World,” with Michele Williams and Oscarwinners Kevin Spacey and Timothy Hutton, for a Dec. 8 release. Mark has been producing and starring in “Wahlburgers” since 2014 and exec produces the Dwayne Johnson HBO series “Ballers” (which returned July 23 for season three) and the USA series “Shooter” with Ryan Phillippe (which began season two on July 18). A Wahlburgers is opening down the street from me in West Hollywood. Guess I’ll have to eat there a lot and hope I get discovered! cups.

THE PERFECT BURGER Before you serve up any patties to your guests, commit these six commandments to memory. 1. Your meat matters. Choose wisely. If you want a really juicy hamburger, use ground beef that’s a combination of 80 percent meat to 20 percent fat. The less fat, the drier the burger. 2. Handle with care. Throw out the hamburger press. The best burgers are hand formed using just enough pressure and taking no longer than necessary to form a patty. Don’t press, mold and overwork. In your efforts to get a perfect-looking burger, you’ll wind up with a tough-tasting one. 3. Don’t turn your patties too soon. Let your burger get good and crusty before you flip it. You’ll know it’s ready to be turned when it releases easily from the grill grates or pan. If it doesn’t, don’t force the issue. 4. Do not, we repeat, DO NOT squish it.

Nothing’s more luscious than a fat, juicy burger that dribbles down your chin. Avoid the urge to press down on your burger while it cooks, as you’ll force out the juices ... and the flavor along with them. 5. Take its temperature. Don’t risk putting a damper on your cookout with food poisoning. Make sure you’ve killed any disease-causing bugs by cooking your meat until an instant-read thermometer says 160 F. And no, the color of the beef is not a good way to judge doneness. 6. Cook on cast iron, not a regular skillet. (If you can’t grill it, that is.) A cast-iron skillet is a good go-to when you have run out of gas, or just don’t want to face the hot, cold or rainy conditions in the backyard. Avoid the temptation to cook in a grill pan. While its ridges will give your patties grill marks, the space into between the marks will be gray and spongy. Cook in a flat-bottomed cast-iron pan, and both sides will come out browned and

crusty, contrasting nicely with the juicy inside. GRILLED PEPPER AND ONIONS Grilled vegetables make a delicious condiment when used like a relish to top hot dogs, burgers, sandwiches and other seasonal favorites. •1-1/2 pounds peppers (red, orange and yellow), thinly sliced •1 medium onion, thinly sliced •2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar •1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil •1 teaspoon sugar •1/4 teaspoon dried oregano •1/8 teaspoon salt •1/8 teaspoon pepper Prepare grill for direct grilling on medium. In a large bowl, toss all ingredients. Transfer to large sheet of nonstick foil (or foil coated with nonstick cooking spray). Wrap foil around mixture, crimping edges to seal. Grill 15 to 18 minutes or until tender. Makes 5

Disc golfers try out the brand new Billy Haas Memorial Disc Golf in Kelvington, Sask.

Disc golf course dedicated and played The course was brand spanking new with installation completed only the day before, when disc golfers took to the Billy Haas Memorial Disc Golf in Kelvington for an inaugural ‘Potluck Chuck Tournament’. The potluck concept for the Sunday, Aug. 13 tournament proved ideal for the first event at the nine-basket course as each entrant provided a prize, meaning even beginners were assured of taking something home at the end of the day. So following an early morning workshop showing a number of locals the basics of the game, the event started with seven first-time players taking part. “It was great to see the response to the tournament,” said Lorelle Holowaty Halderman, Community, Culture, and Recreation Development Manager with the Town of Kelvington. “The idea of a disc golf course for the community had been discussed for quite some time, and we finally took the plunge to install a course this summer with some guidance from the Parkland Association of Disc Golf (PADG). “Seeing so many locals out trying the sport and

taking part in the dedication of the course to the memory of Billy Haas was gratifying. It shows there will be great support for disc golf here.” Calvin Daniels, president of the PADG said the local involvement was just what they hope happens with every course in the area. “It was great to see the turn out. The workshop was well-attended and when a number of them decided to play in the tournament that was great,” he said. “A successful course is more than just installing the baskets or tonals. They do require care and feeding. The grass needs cut and workshops have to be organized locally so the local grassroots player base can be developed and nurtured.” After a double round the scores were tallied and the final four was a Kienle brother’s affair, plus one. Aaron Kienle of Yorkton led through the opening 18, including establishing a solid new course record on the second nine, shooting a minus-four 25, to end up with minus-two 56 going into the championship nine. Mark Kienle from Wadena was second through 18 with a minus-

one 57, Doug Kerr of Yorkton, SK.,was a plusone 59 and rounding out the foursome for the championship round was Jason Kienle of Kuroki, SK., with a plus-two 60. Aaron Kienle would slip in the final nine, giving way to brother Mark who would shoot a championship nine 27 to finish the 27 with a minus-three 84 to top the field, one stroke better than Aaron’s 85, as he shot a 29 on the final nine. Jason Kienle also shot a championship nine 29 to finish third with an overall plus-two 89, with Doug Kerr fourth shooting a championship nine 33 to finish with a plus-five 92. The top woman in the event was Rachelle Kienle of Kuroki, SK., with a plusnine 38. Aaron Kienle said the course had its challenges. “At first, wow there’s a lot of blind shots from the tee boxes,” he said. “During the second round though I really enjoyed that challenge as well as the creek, hill, and the range of distances of each of the holes.” He added that created the biggest challenge of the course. “Driving the holes where you’re guessing where the basket is exactly.”

knowing how to play those holes well.” Mark Kienle noted that the second par-four on the course is a definite bear. “Hole 4 is a long 500-foot-plus shot that runs parallel to the O.B (out-ofbounds) creek, tall grass past the creek and the basket is tucked in by a tree line,” he said. Aaron Kienle said number nine proved his nemesis. “The length is deceptive, the mandatory pole creates a tight spot to go through unless you want to contend with crossing the creek twice,” he said, adding it was his downfall on the championship nine to slip to second. As it was Aaron Kienle said he had a touch of luck on the previous number eight, on the second round of the day that helped him make the final four. “During the second round I released my drive late on number eight and it looked like it was going to be deep in a bush that a bunch of others had lost their discs in,” he recalled. “Luckily it was right in the clearing where the basket is and it was an easy putt, (for a birdie).” But it was a par three that might have been the difference for Mark Kienle.

“On basket eight of the final round I made a 30-foot putt to take a stroke up,” he said. “I think I was more shocked than anyone after over shooting the pin on the tee off.” The event qualifies Aaron Kienle, as a Parkland Association of Disc Golf (PADG) member, for the Farrell Agencies Champions Challenge to be held at the Asessippi Beach and Campground course Oct. 15. Mark Kienle was already into the Championship having qualified through an earlier event. “My brothers Mark and Jason and great friend Jeremy, (Taylor), have all qualified so it gives me opportunity to play some more disc golf with them,” said Aaron Kienle. “Hopefully with us all there supporting each other we’ll see some success in the Champions Challenge.” Rounding out the prizes at the tournament was Adam Daniels of Yorkton taking the Asessippi Beach and Campground sponsored closest-to-the-pin award, and the Yorkton Dodge best drive award went to Mark Kienle. — Submitted by the Parkland Association of Disc Golf

Aaron Kienle said the event was a gratifying one for more than his solid play. “It was a really fun day in Kelvington,” he said. “Thanks to the community for hosting, the volunteers for their hard work, and all the local people that came out to participate and support the new course and first event. “Also great to see the PDGA members in attendance the dedication of the organization and its members is incredible and the reason this sport continues to grow in our region.” Mark Kienle said attacking a new course was interesting. “It was a lot of fun, I had the privilege of coming out during one of the planning and marking days for the course, so it was really cool to see the baskets in and play the course for the first time,” he said. So did being in on the design prove a benefit Sunday? “It was a really tight match, it came down to the final hole, a long 515ft par 4,” said Mark Kienle. “I was able to hold on to a one stroke lead.” He added the course has its challenges throughout. “There are a few blind holes on this course, so for the first round it was hard

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul — It’s road-trip time for the Heffleys. After an unfortunate incident in a ball pit leaves Greg (Jason Drucker) humiliated as the newest internet meme “Diaper Hands, his only shot at redemption is to get video of himself and his gamer idol at the Player Expo — conveniently happening near his Meemaw’s house, where the family is headed for her 90th birthday. Mom and Dad (Alicia Silverstone and Tom Everett Scott), Roderick (Charlie Wright), Greg and Manny hit the road, with a nonstop cavalcade of mishaps along the way (Cheetos in a hot tub, y’all). Kids will love the latest reincarnation, but note that the cast has changed since the previous films. “Snatched (R) — Two

Jason Drucker in “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul prepaid tickets to an exotic vacation burn in the pocket of a newly single (read “dumped) gal Emily (Amy Schumer). So, obviously, she decides to bring her excruciatingly fussy and overly cautious mother Linda (Goldie Hawn) with her. Mother and daughter haul their full complement of emotional baggage to the Central American resort scene, where they get talked into an adventurous side trip, and are predictably kidnapped. With their brave escape — which is presumably hilarious, right?

— the jungle will never be the same. It’s overworked, and the laughs are thinner than they should be, even with Wanda Sykes and Joan Cusack in supportive roles. If you’re fans of the lead actresses, I recommend a double feature of “Trainwrecked and “Overboard instead, because “Snatched isn’t holding anyone captive. “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (PG-13) — The tale we all know, told this go-round through the stylized lens of director Guy Ritchie, stars Charlie Hunnam as Arthur, the

savior who pulled the sword from the stone. Arthur’s father is brutally murdered, and his uncle, Vortigern (Jude Law), steals the crown for his own. The child Arthur is lost, adopted by prostitutes in London, raised unaware of his legacy. Fortune reunites him with Excalibur, the sword of legend, and the reluctant hero must claim his rightful place and restore order in the realm. Mysticism and action take much precedence over story or character development, but you know that’s what you’re getting with Ritchie at the helm. If you came for the beefcake, you won’t be shortchanged. “The Dinner (R) — Two couples converge in an exclusive restaurant for dinner, and to discuss a depraved act captured on film and committed by their sons, who are at risk of exposure. In this slowly unraveling thriller about crime and consequence, the subject is explored in dinner table conversation among the parents, played by Richard Gere and

Rebecca Hall, and Laura Linney and Steve Coogan, aided by flashbacks. Based on the Dutch novel by Herman Koch.

He will celebrate with the public and park staff the government’s ongoing commitment to investing in provincial parks. “With nearly four million visits in 2016, our provincial parks are hubs of activity and a soughtafter destination for tourists and residents alike, Cheveldayoff said. “Projects like this help to ensure that we are continuing to meet the needs of our users and provide them with the best pos-

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have mild osteoporosis in one area. I was on Fosamax for seven years. I have been off for two years. My doctor is suggesting I go back on Fosamax. Your thoughts on treatment in my case? — A.B. DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been advised that Medicare will cover the bone density test only every two years. If that’s true, why? — A.L. ANSWER: Osteoporosis is loss of bone minerals and strength. There are at least two ways to measure changes in bones, whether as an age-related drop in bone density and strength or as an increase in response to treatment. One way is to measure the bone density via an X-ray (DEXA). The other is a urine test, N-telopeptide of collagen (abbreviated NTX), which looks at net bone loss. DEXA correlates well to fracture risk, but it changes very slowly. In fact, it changes so slowly that a repeat test within two years usually reflects variability in the test itself rather than an actual change in the bone, which is why most insurance companies — and, yes, Medicare — will cover the test only every two years. Some experts believe that measuring NTX is a useful way of measuring the effectiveness of treatment, such as with a medication like Fosamax. Further, although the opti-

mum duration of treatment for osteoporosis isn’t clear, five years is commonly used (as it sounds like is the case for A.B.). NTX can guide whether restarting treatment is necessary. There just isn’t enough information to make this a general recommendation, although the theory makes sense to me. If I were treating someone in A.B.’s situation, I would restart treatment if the NTX level showed high bone resorption. READERS: Nearly every woman, if she lives long enough, must come to grips with osteoporosis. To order the booklet about this debilitating disease, write to Dr. Roach — No. 1104W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow up to four weeks for delivery. DEAR DR. ROACH: What are your thoughts about the MiraDRY procedure to get rid of underarm sweat? Is it safe not to have sweat under the arms? — S.J. ANSWER: MiraDRY is the brand name of a microwave device designed to treat hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). This is a condition of abnormal, drenching sweat that greatly interferes with social activities, not normal underarm sweating. It is currently used only for underarms — not hands, feet or face, the other most common places for localized hyperhidrosis. According to several published papers, the microwaves heat up the water in the sweat glands, destroying them, while the skin itself is cooled. The published success rates (at reducing sweating

to “never noticeable” or “tolerable”) are very high, as are patient satisfaction results. Side effects included swelling, redness and temporary numbness.

This is a new procedure, but it appears to have promise in the treatment of excess sweating. I also found a very helpful website at www.sweathelp.

to outfit you with the best possible bra for your body. Chapman said she will be seeing clients on a one-on-one .basis, explaining the benefits of good bras and measuring their bodies properly “Most women just want to find a good-fitting bra that’s not uncomfortable,” Chapman said. “What they don’t realize is that a good support bra is also important for blood circulation and enhanced lymph drainage.” “Chapman has over 200 bra sizes available for ordering, ranging from 30AA to 52KK. It’s likely that you’ll fit somewhere between those sizes. She offers these questions for women to ask themselves: • Do you have a drawer full of bras but none that fit comfortably? • Does your bust line “bounce” when you walk while wearing your “everyday” bra? • Do you overflow the cup of your bra? • Do your bra straps slip of your shoulder or dig into your shoulders leaving red and painful marks? • Does your bra ride up in the back because you tighten the straps to give you added support? • Have you ever begun an exercise class only to drop out because your breasts ached from lack of support while jumping or running? If you answer yes to any of these you are in need of a new bra, and a custom one could be the way to go.

By Cindy Elavsky Q: Michelle Dockery is so wonderful in “Good Behavior.” Can you tell me if it will be back for another season? — Ali F., The Villages, Florida A: The TNT hit drama starring the “Downton Abbey” alum — which is based on a series of books by Blake Crouch — will indeed be back for its sophomore season. On Oct. 15 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, we’ll get the first of 10 new episodes

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Wyatt hinted to Steffy that there was a new woman in his life. Justin didn’t approve of Bill’s latest scheme. Unaware that Katie had her eye on a potential suitor, Brooke gave her sister some advice about finding a new love. Steffy cheerfully gloated to Sally about her undeniable certainty that there was no future for Spectra Fashions. Quinn almost caught Katie and Wyatt together. When Liam interrogated his father about the blatant lie regarding Caroline, Bill warned his son not to get involved. Eric called Sheila with the news about his marriage. Having learned about Bill’s lie from Liam, Steffy had a complete opposite opinion about the situation than her husband. Wait to See: An impatient businessman makes a backup plan for an acquisition. DAYS OF OUR LIVES “Marlena” broke up with John. Anjelica lured Adrienne into a trap. Brady’s jealousy threatened to push him over the edge. Nicole made a risky move to be near Holly. Steve and Kayla clashed over the situation with Tripp and Joey. Brady got the wrong idea about Nicole and Eric. Justin made a confession to Sonny. Hattie broke Bonnie out of Statesville. Chad and Abigail’s

Michelle Dockery with Michelle as thief and con-artist Letty Raines, whose life is always one wrong turn or one bad decision away from implosion. As the second season

Michael Easton stars as “Finn” on “General Hospital” reunion took a surprising turn. Tripp secretly decided to skip town. Anjelica met with Bonnie and explained her first order of business. Lani was put in a tough position at work. Bonnie broke Lucas’s heart. Wait to See: Sonny recalls a key memory from the night Deimos was killed.

opens, Letty has patched things up with Javier (Juan Diego Botto) and reconciled with her mother, Estelle (Lusia Strus), who had long stood in the way of Letty getting custody of Jacob (Nyles Steele). On the run from FBI Agent Rhonda Lashever (guest star Ann Dowd), Letty, Javier and Jacob are heading for a new life trying to be normal. But the more Letty and Javier try to create a normal life, the more things go awry. Their attempt to build a better future for Jacob soon proves futile when something more dangerous than the FBI catches up with them: the past.

Q: Please, please, please tell me that “Unreal” will be back for another season. I am completely hooked on that show! — Madge R., via email A: “Unreal” will return to Lifetime in early 2018 for an all-new season of lust, betrayal and con games — all wrapped up in a fictitious behindthe-scenes glimpse into the chaos surrounding the production of a hit dating-competition program called “Everlasting.” “Unreal” is led by flawed heroine Rachel Goldberg (played by Shiri Appleby), renowned for her skills in manipulating her relationships with, and among,

Griffin. Carly asked Epiphany for help. Kiki stepped up. Ava reluctantly began therapy. Hayden looked to a kindred spirit for some advice. Monica gave Finn her blessing. Jason tried to intervene. Carly swallowed her pride. Curtis offered his congratulations. Kiki made a big impression. Nathan received a welcome surprise. Felicia felt like a teenager again. Valerie was happy for Dillon. Finn felt deceived. Liz and Hayden bonded together. Scott had his doubts. Alexis got some advice from her daughters. Ava was a big mess. Finn suspected he wasn’t getting the whole story. Scotty pushed his luck. Alexis shared her thoughts. Dante looked for a resolution. Carly was left to wonder. Wait to See: Joss has a date with Oscar.

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS Jack and Nikki enjoyed their time at the cabin, not knowing someone was outside snapping photos of them. Victor warned Zack that he was overly protective of Abby. Cane couldn’t help but feel something when Juliet showed him a picture from her ultrasound. Later, Charlie told Cane that Lily was better off without him. Phyllis secretly hoped Brash & Sassy succeeded so that Victoria wouldn’t rely on Billy so much. Ashley blamed Graham for advising her to sell her mother’s company. Jordan realized that Hilary was just trying to keep him away from Lily. Victor was proud of Abby’s business acumen regarding a new dating app. Wait to See: Ashley travels outside her comfort zone.

Season three features a new feminist “suitress” (instead of “suitor”), Serena (Caitlin FitzGerald), who is determined to have her pick of eager male suitors. And what’s even more awesome is that the network just announced the show will be back for a FOURTH season, well ahead of its season-three premiere. Q: I keep hearing talk about another season of “Arrested Development,” but I haven’t heard any confirmation. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) As eager as you are to take on that new challenge, it would be best to temper that spurt of “Ram”-bunctious energy until you have more facts to back up your decision. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) This is a good time for hardworking Bovines

“When do we go to the zoo?” “When is Nate’s birthday party?” “When, when, when” is the repetitive question of kids of all ages, but as a parent of preschoolers, it’s especially challenging to answer the “when” questions if eager kids don’t yet read, write or comprehend the days of the week. That was a parenting challenge for neonatologist and mom of two, Dr. Anna Hedstrom. So, she recruited her mother-inlaw, retired fourth-grade teacher Judy Hedstrom, to help her and her husband develop a hands-on strategy for their 3-year-old son, Parker, to understand what’s up on their weekly schedule. To create an event calendar, Judy organized family photos of familiar faces in Parker’s life, and found images of day-to-day routines and outings from free online photos. She used them to make easy-to-handle, Velcro-backed activity cards Parker could attach to color-coded days of the week. It works! “The Parker’s Week calendar gets him involved in a playful way

to take a break from their hectic on-the-job schedules to bask in the unconditional love and support of friends and family. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Pay attention to what you hear in the workplace. You could pick up some hints about possible changes. Meanwhile, a to understand when activities will take place,” say the parents. On Sundays, they talk about the coming week as he attaches cards representing routine events like school, as well as special activities such as going to the zoo. Now, six months later, he has figured out how to do the “regulars” himself. Enjoy making one adapted to your family lifestyle with your preschooler. Here’s the stuff you need: —1 22-by-28-inch poster board cut in half widthwise —cardstock sheets in different colors —copied photos and images of people and activities in child’s life —household glue —self-stick Velcro —magnets or art hooks for hanging Here’s the fun: 1. For the header section of the activity calendar, print a title such as “EMILY’S WEEK” on a 12-by-4-inch strip of cardstock. Add a photo of the child next to it, and glue in place on the poster board. 2. On the short end of seven 3-by-11-inch tall colored strips of cardstock, print the days of the week. Line up strips vertically in a row, and glue under the title strip. 3. Cut 3-by-3-inch cards for representing routine

new infusion of creative energy sets in by week’s end. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Try to be more flexible in dealing with a suddenly difficult situation, whether it’s on the job or in the home. Others might have some good points to offer. Listen to them. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You might think you’re not getting the royal treatment you deserve. But be careful not to become a royal pain by complaining about it. Be patient and allow things to work out. VIRGO (August 23 to

September 22) Watch that penchant for being superjudgmental at work. It might create a bad impression with someone whose decisions could determine the course of your career. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You’ve been your usual busy-bee self, gathering nectar wherever you can find it. But now’s a good time to kick back, relax and just enjoy smelling the roses. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) That pesky personal situation seems to be improving. But change comes slowly, so be patient. Expect some-

one to bring more positive news by week’s end. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Whoa! Ease up on that hectic pace you’ve been putting yourself through. Take time to recharge your energy levels before going full gallop again. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) Try to be intrigued, not intimidated, by the issues you’re suddenly facing, and you’ll be ahead of the game. But without doubt, the biggest fear I had was instilled by my parents. If I wanted to climb a tree, my mother would tell me to get down because I might fall and “bang my head.” My father would amp up the terror, warning me that I would “crack my head

open.” Well, times have changed. The only time I’ve ever seen an anvil was at Colonial Williamsburg, and apparently modern science has cured the scourge of quicksand. Thanks to the UFC, you can watch kung fu without having to make it about a battle over your favorite aunt. Yet, a serious battle looms in American sports. The NFL has literally cracked its head open. A recent study confirmed what we all most likely knew: 99 percent of the brains donated to science by former NFLers showed signs of serious chronic traumatic encephalopathy. CTE is a disease that causes early-onset dementia and a host of other things associated with brain function. It is the direct result of taking numerous hits to the head. Nobody is shocked by the findings. We’ve known

that football and fighting cause damage to the brain. Muhammad Ali couldn’t even walk up the stairs at the 1996 Olympics. No, now the fear is that we’re going to lose our game. Participation is key in sports. It is hard to fill roster spots when nobody will play, and after this CTE report, really, parents have to be afraid for their kids. Luckily, this is nothing new. In the early days of football, the late 1800s, a Harvard coach came up with a formation designed to decimate Yale. Based on ancient military strategy, the wedge simply meant that everyone on the offensive team would grip each other’s uniform in a V formation, their ball carrier safe behind them. The problem was that the wedge often singled out lone defenders with a halfton of momentum, and that actually killed people.

It makes it easy to grab what I need for a quick trip, and the cords are never jumbled together.” — E.T. in Massachusetts • “We had a nice set of knives in a knife block. The scissors broke, and then a couple of the smaller knives went kaput, too. The block started to look weird with the spots for missing items. My wife filled a wide mouth vase with little stone beads, and the remaining knives are stored in it on the counter. It looks really cool and different, and keeps the blades safe.” — A.L. in Arkansas • “I store all my large utensils inside of a plastic

gallon-size beverage container. When I have guests, I use it for extra iced tea or juice, but otherwise it holds large spoons, rolling pins and the like.” — M.Y. in Alabama • Purchase additional measuring cups in the most-used sizes and slip one in the containers of most measured items: flour, sugar, coffee, etc. You’ll thank yourself when you don’t have to search for the right measuring cup or try to clean one in between ingredients. • Here’s a tip for caregivers: Please make sure you put personal time on your to-do list, because it’s just as important as follow-

ing up on treatment plans and picking up prescriptions. You can help someone so much better when you are rested and ready to give. Take care of yourself so you can take care of others.

Piper and Hulk Hogan would rule the afternoons. I watched kung-fu fighters avenging the dishonor of their sister or mother before church. Growing up as a kid (is there any other way?), the biggest fears I had in life now seem absolutely absurd. You see, I was born into an era of five-channel television. You had your big three — ABC, NBC, CBS — and then two or three stragglers that showed nothing but reruns and live sports. And the old reruns ruled. The reruns were mostly a cavalcade of extreme violence or predicaments. The Justice League would battle the Legion of Doom every Saturday morning; Godzilla would level Tokyo every Sunday morning. Superfly Snuka, Andre the Giant, Rowdy Roddy

• Moving? Stick a foam plate between your regular plates to cushion them. Bonus is that they are reusable at the new place. • “I found that a travel makeup bag worked really well to keep all my electronic accessories in one place. I have spots for my different device chargers, as well as my wireless mouse, jump drives, earbuds and a spare battery.

Thanks to Wile E. Coyote, I had an inordinate fear of anvils falling from the sky and Acme in general, since it seemed to supply all his faulty weaponry. I used to worry that somebody would tie my sister to train tracks or that a hike through the woods would somehow end up with her falling into quicksand with no ape men to save her, because ape men were not indigenous to our area.

It got to be such a problem that the president of the United States, Teddy Roosevelt, got involved. Rather than see football go, he was instrumental in changing the rules of the game so that it exists to this day. That’s why they carved his face into a mountain. If we put our heads together, football can be saved. We just need to be careful and not crack our heads open. Mark Vasto is a veteran

pervised, he will find a way under, around or over the fence in almost no time. Then I’m chasing him all over the neighborhood. I’m thinking of getting a higher fence, and in the meantime, I’ve changed the latch on the fence gate — he figured out how to undo the old one! What else can I do? — Frustrated Dad in Houston DEAR DAD: Escapeartist dogs can be tough to

reel in. And while neighbors may ask why you can’t simply keep Fergus inside, I know it’s even tougher to keep a high-energy, creative dog indoors when there’s a big, beautiful world just outside the window. A multi-pronged approach is needed here. A higher fence and stronger latch are good solutions, but so is curbing that wanderlust. If Fergus isn’t

neutered, get that taken care of. It can dampen his tendency to wander, particularly if he’s on the hunt for a female. He’ll also need to be supervised every time he’s outside. That means dedicating a good chunk of time to Fergus, as bringing your laptop out with you to work may not be an option — he’ll likely pester you constantly to come and play. And you should. Play

fetch, do some impromptu obedience training, and so on. Grab some items that will challenge Fergus. He’s clever, so feed him using a “slow feeder” bowl that requires dogs to work through a grooved maze to get food. Give him toys that drop treats randomly when played with. But most of all, work with him to burn off his energy and make him more interested

a zeal of zebras. • If you’re planning a trip to India, keep in mind that in that country, it’s considered rude to whistle in public. • One day in 1994, Duff McKagan, the original bass guitar player for hard rock band Guns N’ Roses, was bored. With little else to do, he decided to take a look at the band’s financials — and realized he couldn’t make sense of the info. Frustrated, McKagan enrolled in a basic finance course at a community college. One thing led to another, and he ended

up at Seattle University’s Albers School of Business. Now, the rock star is becoming a money manager, founding wealth-management firm Meridian Rock to help other musicians in the same boat. • If you saw two ships run into each other, you’d likely call it a collision — and you’d be correct if both boats were moving at the time. Technically speaking, though, if one of the boats is stationary, it’s known as an allision. • Those who study such things say that when a male beaver gets in a wres-

tling fight with a female beaver, the female usually wins. • As it turns out, cuddling isn’t just fun — it’s good for you, too!
