DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had several kidney stones and was advised to avoid oxalate. I was told that green, leafy vegetables and grains are high in oxalate. How can my diet be healthy if I avoid these healthy foods? — D.F. ANSWER: Calcium oxalate is the most common type of kidney stone, so limiting dietary oxalate makes sense. However, increasing water intake, dietary calcium and potassium can help prevent kidney stones. It is paradoxical, but dietary calcium reduces kidney stone risk while calcium supplements increase kidney stone risk. Also, vitamin C increases kidney stone risk, so it’s not recommended to take supple-

SPICED KIELBASA AND FRUIT KABOBS Break the barbecue mold with this fast and fabulous summer weeknight dinner. •1 package (16 ounces) light kielbasa or other smoked sausage, cut into 1-inch chunks •3 apricots, pitted and each cut into quarters •2 ripe plums or peaches, pitted and cut into 1-inch chunks •3 tablespoons sweet orange marmalade •1 teaspoon Chinese

mental vitamin C. There are many places to find the oxalate content of food, starting with your dietician, but websites like www.lowoxalate.info and www.ohf.org have nice lists. There you can find many fruits and vegetables that have little or no oxalate, including broccoli, lettuce and cucumber. You do need to avoid spinach, beets and similar vegetables. As far as grains go, corn, rice and wild rice are good choices. DEAR DR. ROACH: For a young couple wanting a baby, is there any help available for a man with a low sperm count? — N.N. ANSWER: Identifying the cause of a couple’s infertility is often difficult. In one large study, 20 percent of cases were attributed to male factors, and 38 percent to female. In 27 percent, there were reasons for infertility in both partners, and in 15 percent of cases no cause could be found. Clearly, both partners need to be evaluated. Low sperm count isn’t a diagnosis; many separate

five-spice powder Prepare outdoor grill for covered direct grilling over medium heat. Meanwhile, alternately thread kielbasa, apricots and plums onto 4 to 6 long metal skewers. In cup, combine marmalade and five-spice powder. Place skewers on hot grill rack. Cover grill and cook 5 minutes or until kielbasa browns and fruit chars slightly, turning skewers occasionally. Uncover grill. Brush marmalade mixture all over kielbasa and fruit. Cook 1

systems can be affected, all leading to reduced sperm count. Abnormalities in hormonal function, mechanical obstruction and testicular disease all are possibilities. Although many causes of low sperm count are untreatable, not all are. For example, elevated prolactin levels from a tumor or medication can be treated, leading to improved fertility. Low sex-hormone levels can be replaced. Many men are advised to wear boxer shorts, as high temperatures affect fertility, but it’s not clear this is effective. Assistive procedures, such as intrauterine insemination, in-vitro fertilization and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (a single spermatozoa injected into an egg) can be effective, but these procedures are always expensive, rarely covered by insurance, not 100 percent effective and have a small increased risk of birth defects. DEAR DR. ROACH: Is secondhand vapor (from to 2 minutes longer, turning occasionally. Makes 4 main-dish servings • Each individual serving: About 340 calories, 22g total fat (8g saturated), 17g protein, 22g carb., 2g fiber, 76mg cholesterol, 1,032mg sodium. GRILLING TIP: KABOBS Foods that are cooked together on the same skewer should heat quickly and take the same amount of time to cook. Foods with different cooking times, like vegetables and meat, should be grilled on separate skewers. Also, be sure to leave a little space between pieces on the skewer so the food cooks

the electronic cigarettes) harmful? — B.S.B. ANSWER: While the evidence that secondhand smoke from regular cigarettes is harmful to people around smokers, causing increased risks of lung cancer and heart disease, the data just aren’t clear about the vapor from electronic cigarettes. It is known that the vapor contains nicotine and potentially cancer-causing chemicals, but the amounts are much lower than with regular cigarettes. These chemicals can be inhaled by nonsmokers if close enough and possibly absorbed through the skin. Electronic cigarettes, also called vaporizers, may help people quit smoking. That’s the only use for them that I would recommend, after which they should be eliminated. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. evenly. If you like metal skewers, buy twisted or square ones, not round — the food will twirl on the skewers less and cook more evenly. If you’re using wooden or bamboo skewers, shape isn’t a factor. But soak them in water for at least 15 minutes before using so they don’t burn. Just pat dry before putting food on them. Harvest progressing at normal rate Many producers in the north expect to be in the field in the coming weeks, although desiccation and swathing has begun in some areas. Topsoil moisture continues to improve for many areas with the recent rain. Across the province, topsoil moisture on cropland is rated as one per cent surplus, 42 per cent adequate, 38 per cent short and 19 per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as one per cent

surplus, 32 per cent adequate, 35 per cent short and 32 per cent very short.

Rainfall last week ranged from trace amounts to 48 mm in the Turtleford area. While the rain has been welcomed in some areas to help crops fill, it is too late to be of benefit in more southern areas where crops are rapidly drying down or have already been combined. The majority of crop damage

this past week is attributed to hail, localized flooding, lack of moisture and insects such as diamondback moths in canola. Producers are busy combining, desiccating crops and hauling bales and grain.

Harvest means farm equipment on Highways With harvest beginning in various parts of Saskatchewan, people travelling our province’s highways are reminded to plan ahead, be patient and watch for large farm equipment. “The size of farm equipment has grown exponentially over the past number of years,” Highways and Infrastructure Minister David Marit said. “Farmers will be working all hours of the day, so I would like to remind drivers to please be patient and keep an eye out for slow-moving or oversized farm equipment.” Producers seeking information about what safety measures are required for moving machinery along Saskatchewan highways, or for technical advice regarding whether a particular piece of farm equipment is too heavy for a certain road, please visit www.saskatchewan.ca/ business/transportationand-road-construction/ information-for-truckersand-commercial-truckingcompanies/moving-farmequipment or call 306-7875307. PICKS OF THE WEEK “Alien: Covenant” (R) — The terraforming crew of the Covenant are waylaid by a neutrino blast on their way across the galaxy, leading to the discovery of an unknown planet. Upon investigation, the crew discover synthetic android David (gloriously portrayed by Michael Fassbender), the lone survivor of the Prometheus expedition. And the vicious, violent aliens, of course. As the crew is picked off by the morphing aliens, desperation grows and the revelations are shocking, nothing less than you would expect from director Ridley Scott. Katherine Waterston stars as crewmember Janet Daniels in a clear comparison to the originating Ellen Ripley, and she holds up nicely. Billy Crudup plays Chris

Amandla Stenberg, Nick Robinson in “Everything, Everything” Oram, the true-believer first mate turned captain. “ E v e r y t h i n g , Everything” (PG-13) — Maddy (Amandla Stenberg, whom you might recognize as a grown-up Rue from “The Hunger Games”) is 18 and has lived her life in a cage. Even if the cage is a beautiful home with the luxuries of modern life. Her mother (Anika Noni Rose) is protecting her from a rare immune-deficiency disease that puts her at risk after only nominal contact with others. Olly (Nick Robinson) moves in next door, and the two form a

relationship despite the figurative and literal barriers between them. Like all capricious young lovers, a plot is hatched to run away together. What does it mean to live? What is the cost to protect the ones you love? The youngadult drama genre again attempts an answer. “How To Be a Latin Lover” (PG-13) — What’s an aging gigolo to do when his Sugar Momma trades him in for a younger model? Maximo (Eugenio Derbez) ends up with his sister (Salma Hayek) and her super-cute son Hugo (Raphael Alejandro), too many gaps that need to be filled in before you make definitive plans.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) This week could offer more opportunities for ambitious Lambs eager to get ahead. But don’t rush into making decisions until you’ve checked for possible hidden problems. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Some light begins to shine on professional and/or personal situations that have long eluded explanation. Best advice: Don’t rush things. All will be made clear in time. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Although you might want to protest what seems to be an unfair situation, it’s best to keep your tongue and temper in check for now. The full story hasn’t yet come out. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Work prospects are back on track. But watch what you say. A thoughtless comment to the wrong person -- even if it’s said in jest -- could delay or even derail your progress. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A colleague might try to goad you into saying or doing the wrong thing. It’s best to ignore the troublemaker, even if he or she riles your royal self. Your supporters stand with you. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Be careful not to let your on-the-job

zealousness create resentment with co-workers who might feel you shut them out. Prove them wrong by including them in your project. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Although it’s not quite what you hoped for, use your good business sense to make the most of what you’re being offered at this time. Things will improve down the line. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A more positive picture of what lies ahead is beginning to take shape. But there are still

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Continue to keep a tight hold on the reins so that you don’t charge willynilly into a situation that might appear attractive on the surface but lack substance. C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) You still need to demand those answers to your questions. Remember, your wise counseling earns you respect, but it’s your search for truth that gives you wisdom. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You’ll find that people are happy to help you deal with some difficult situations. And, of course, knowing you, you’ll be happy to return those

and it’s charm-school time when Maximo tries to impart some of his life experience to help Hugo win the affections of his crush, Arden (Mckenna Grace). Oh, and of course, there’s a new target female for the Latin Lover: Arden’s grandmother, played by Raquel Welch. Laughs and sexiness abound with familiar faces everywhere (Rob Lowe, Michael Cera, Kristen Bell, Rob Corddry, Rob Riggle and more). Disney’s “Descendants 2” (PG) — Our favorite villain kids are back, this time revisiting the Isle of the Lost to bring home Mal (Dove Cameron) after the daily pressure to be the perfect partner to King Ben (Mitchell Hope) drives her to reclaim her villainous roots. The kids find that the Isle has been taken over by Ursula’s daughter Uma (China Anne McClain) and her band of merry henchmen. Evie (Sofia Carson), Carlos (Cameron Boyce) and Jay (Booboo Stewart) bring Ben on their rescue mission, where he must embrace his inner bad

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read your column with the question from Christine B. in Atlanta about her struggle to find

pet-friendly housing. I am a director at a nonprofit housing provider, and previously worked as a fair-housing specialist in Nevada. I do not know Christine B.’s specific situation with her cats regarding whether or not she has a disability. However, I feel compelled to offer the following comments and tips regarding Reasonable Accommodations in rental housing under U.S.

Department of Housing and Urban Development, which applies to all rental properties of more than four units where the owner does not reside on-site. In April 2013, HUD’s office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity released guidance stating that any comfort, therapy or companion animal is considered a service animal. This is much broader

than the more familiar ADA requirement defining a service animal as either a dog or a miniature horse trained to assist a disabled person with a certain task. Many people who suffer from depression and anxiety as well as those with physical ailments who benefit from their companion animals (cats too!) can request a Reasonable Accommodation from a

landlord. Because they are considered service animals per HUD’s guidance, landlords may NOT collect pet deposits, pet fees or pet rent from residents requesting this accommodation. I firmly believe that all tenants should be aware of their rights. — Joscylyn H., Albuquerque, New Mexico DEAR JOSCYLYN: This is fantastic to hear, and I hope it helps Christine

By Cindy Elavsky Q: I thought I saw months ago that “Major Crimes” would be returning in July. I haven’t seen anything further about the show. Will it be back on TNT anytime soon? — Ken H., via email A: Indeed it will, Ken. Season six of the hit procedural crime drama will return to TNT on Tuesday, Oct. 31, at 9/8c with 16 new episodes. This season, as Cmdr. Sharon Raydor (played by two-time Oscar nominee Mary McDonnell) grows accustomed to her new boss, Assistant Chief Leo Mason (Leonard Roberts), the detectives find themselves ques-

• “If you are going on vacation, leave a plastic baggie filled with ice cubes in your freezer. When you return, if the baggie is filled with a single chunk of ice, you’ll know your power was interrupted long enough to spoil your food while you were away.” — G.L. in Missouri • Here’s another moving tip: Bundle clothing on hangers with a rubber band. Slip the whole lot into a trash bag. The items will be ready to hang in the new closet with hardly any fuss. • Ants in your pet’s food bowl? Set cat or dog food bowls in a pie plate or other shallow dish filled with water. Ants and bugs can’t cross the water to get to the food, so it’s safe from pests. • “Use charcoal in the bathroom to prevent humidity from turning into mildew. Put a few charcoal bricks into a small open container, like a bowl. Then just tuck it behind the toilet. It traps excess moisture. Use only plain charcoal, not the kind that has lighter fluid in it!” — W.K. in Ohio • “If you have a magnetic closure on a kitchen cabinet that is too strong (you have to really pull the door to get it open), try this simple fix: Put a small piece of clear tape over the magnet. It reduces the magnet’s pull just enough that it doesn’t take as much effort. We did this at my grandma’s house when she got new kitchen cabinets, and she’s much happier now!” — Y.L.S. in Alabama • Have a terrific-smell-

Ralph Macchio tioning their faith in the rapidly changing priorities of the justice system and their ability to reason through difficult changes in their personal relationships. They must learn to accept the necessity of risk, in all its different guises, as they prepare to face the inexplicable but increasingly undeniable return ing candle that’s burned down to bits? Scrape them out, and place in a small mason jar. Poke holes in the lid, and cap the jar. Then keep the jar in your car’s cup holder. When the car warms in the sun, it’ll smell wonderful, and there’s no need for a flame. Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

of Phillip Stroh (guest star Billy Burke). The cast also includes G.W. Bailey, Tony Denison, Michael Paul Chan, Raymond Cruz, Phillip P. Keene, Kearran Giovanni, Jonathan Del Arco, Graham Patrick Martin, Jessica Meraz and Daniel di Tomasso. Q: What is this talk I’m hearing about a “Karate Kid” series with Ralph Macchio? — Samantha F., Asheville, North Carolina A: It’s not just talk; it’s definitely happening. More than 30 years after Ralph won the Under-18 All-Valley Karate Tournament, he’ll be back in the dojo as Daniel LaRusso in 2018 for YouTube Red’s “Cobra Kai.” Daniel’s archenemy, Johnny Lawrence (with William Zabka reprising his role), has reopened Cobra Kai dojo in his quest for redemption. The 30-minute comedy received a straightto-series order for 10 episodes from the online streaming network, placing it in the big leagues with other streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. Executive producers Josh Heald (“Hot Tub Time Machine”), Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (both of “Harold and Kumar”

fame) also will write the script. In a joint statement, they said: “’Cobra Kai’ will be a true continuation of the original films — packed with comedy, heart and thrilling fight scenes. We can’t wait to reignite the LaRusso-Lawrence rivalry.” Susanne Daniels, YouTube’s Global Head of Original Content, added: “If ‘The Karate Kid’ was Daniel’s story, ‘Cobra Kai’ is equal parts Daniel and Johnny’s story.” Q: Can you tell me what Jonathan Groff is up to? I loved him on “Glee” and miss seeing him on my TV set.” — Linda T., via email A: This fall, you can catch the talented actor/ singer/dancer/Broadway phenom starring in the Netflix original series “Mindhunter.” Jonathan plays an agent in the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit who tracks down serial

killers and rapists in the 1970s. In fact, he’s responsible for coining the term “serial killer.” The project is being produced and directed by David Fincher (“Zodiac” and “Seven”), so you know it’s gonna be crazy-good and suspense-

ful and scary. Look for the series to drop Oct. 13 with 10 episodes. Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803; or e-mail her at letters@cindyelavsky.com.

HOLLYWOOD — Anne Hathaway, Oscar winner for “Les Miserables” (2012), who impressed with “Ella Enchanted” (2004), “Brokeback Mountain” and “The Dark Knight” (2012), is taking on the role of her career — she will be playing “Barbie.” Yes, that Barbie, who’s been kicked out of Barbieland for not being perfect enough. Hathaway’s girl power continues to rule with the female reboot of “Ocean’s Eleven,” called “Ocean’s Eight,” with Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett and Rihanna, opening June 8, 2018, followed by “Nasty Women,” with Rebel Wilson. It’s the female reboot of the 1988 Michael Caine/Steve Martin comedy, “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.” First came Chris Hemsworth (age 33) as Thor, and Liam Hemsworth (27) in “The Hunger Games,” and now the third brother, 36-yearold Luke Hemsworth (currently playing Ashley Stubbs, in HBO’s “Westworld”) had his first starring film. “Hickok” (as in Wild Bill Hickok), with Kris Kristofferson, Bruce Dern and Trace Adkins, hit big screens in July. The Hollywood Reporter observed in its review, “The innate superiority of the Hemsworth family gene pool is demonstrated by the low-budget oater.” The film will be available Aug. 17 on DVD. Luke’s next film, the sci-fi thriller

Luke Hemsworth “Encounter,” with Tom Atkins (of the 1980 classic “The Fog”), will arrive Nov. 1. Chris Hemsworth has three Thor films in his future: “Ragnarok” (in theaters Nov. 3), “Avengers: Infinity War” (out May 4) and an untitled “Avengers” film (due May 3, 2019). He’s also starring for Jerry Bruckheimer in his war drama “Horse Soldiers,” in which he, Michael Shannon and Michael Pena are CIA agents in Afghanistan fighting the Taliban. Youngest Hemsworth, Liam, engaged to Miley Cyrus, currently is filming “Isn’t It Romantic,” with Rebel Wilson, Adam DeVine and Priyanka Chopra, for a Valentine’s Day opening. Dame Helen Mirren, who won an Oscar for “The Queen” (2006) and appeared most recently in “The Fate of the Furious,” stars in “Ella & John,” with Donald Sutherland, opening Jan. 19, about a senior couple taking a road trip from Boston

to Florida in a vintage Winnebago. Next up is “Winchester” (out Feb. 23) as Sarah Winchester, whose husband, William Winchester, treasurer of The Winchester Repeating Arms Co., and daughter died suddenly, three weeks apart, in 1881. She believed she was cursed, and that if she stopped building their house in San Jose, California, she would die. For nearly 40 years, she built rooms and staircases that led nowhere, until she became ill and the work stopped, at which time she died. In addition, she’s co-starring with Keira Knightly and Morgan Freeman in Disney’s live-action film, “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms,” due Nov. 2, 2018. It’s a hot week when we can write about Barbie, girl power, three hunks and a dame. Oh well, three out of four isn’t bad!

SPECIAL RETIREES' HEARING AID! A remarkable new hearing aid is now available and getting rave reviews from retirees! It is easy to use, looks great in the ear, and marks a MAJOR advancement in hearing technology!

At last. The hearing aid that thousands have wanted is now available. The latest digital hearing aid technology solves the biggest challenge for hearing aid wearers–hearing well in noisy environments. Nobody will notice it because of its minute size, fitting snugly and comfortably just behind your ear. Everything works automatically. There are no controls to worry about and adjustments are easy to make–even from your smart phone. So you can get back to enjoying your relationships, rather than thinking about your hearing. Because these new hearing aids collect and digitally processes natural, 360 degree sound thousands of times per second, they have been shown

to reduce the strain that effortful-listening puts on the brain and even to improve recall from conversations in noisy listening environments. In fact, these hearing aids improve speech understanding in background noise 30% better than even the previous top-of-the-line hearing aids. Hearing professionals are celebrating the biggest advancement in 30 years of fitting hearing aids and patients credit it with providing a substantial improvement in their ability to communicate in large groups and noisy social settings. A hearing test takes less than 60 minutes, you don’t need a doctor’s referral, and there’s no cost or obligation whatsoever. Call now to try these hearing aids for yourself!

August 25, 2017 | This Week Marketplace

Harvest may just be beginning in the local region, but that does not mean farmers have not been busy, as those with hay have been baling.

Harvest season is progressing well Despite rain delays in some areas, producers in the province now have seven per cent of the crop in the bin and seven per cent swathed or ready to straight-cut. The five-year (20122016) average for this time of year is four per cent combined and six per cent swathed or ready to straight-cut, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report. Eighty-two per cent of fall rye, 50 per cent of winter wheat, 35

per cent of lentils, 28 per cent of field peas, three per cent of durum and two per cent of mustard are now in the bin. Six per cent of canola and five per cent of mustard have been swathed. Harvest progress is most advanced in the southwest region where 17 per cent of the crop is now combined. The southeast region has 11 per cent combined, the west-central region three percent and the east-central region one per cent.

Many producers in the north expect to be in the field in the coming weeks, although desiccation and swathing has begun in some areas.

For a complete Weekly Crop Report, visit http://www. publications.gov.sk.ca/redirect. cfm?p=86587&i=100255. Straight cut canola can be an option Interest in straight cutting canola is growing and producers on the prairies now have assurance it is a viable option thanks to a detailed study of harvest methods undertaken by Prairie Agricultural Machinery Institute (PAMI). “Swathing has always been the reliable harvest method for canola in Western Canada,” said Avery Simundsson, project leader with PAMI in Portage la Prairie, “but it’s good to understand what other options are available. The goal of our study was to provide information

that will help people make economic decisions about which harvest method may work for them.” Conducted in Manitoba during the 2016 growing season and funded by the Canada and Manitoba governments, through Growing Forward 2, a federal-provincial-territorial initiative, the study evaluated four treatments: Reglone, Heat and glyphosate, natural ripening and swathing, which was the benchmark. Data was collected and analyzed for a number of aspects of the harvest, including the speed of har-

vest, yield, fuel consumption, productivity (bushels per hour), and seed characteristics like size, oil content and dockage. Simundsson stressed that straight cutting is most appropriate for shatter-resistant varieties of canola due to the reduced risk of shatter loss. If fact, the development of such varieties is partly responsible for the interest in this harvest method, she added. Once the numbers were in, Simundsson said the study showed the method of harvest does have a significant effect in some

areas—productivity, harvest efficiency, fuel consumption, harvest speed, time to harvest and operator experience—but no significant difference was found in yield, engine speed, dockage, oil content, green seed or seed weight. She added there was an expectation that straight cutting would result in larger seeds and higher oil content but that did not turn out to be the case. The study’s final report makes no recommendation for one harvest method over another. “The results are based on one site over one growing season,” said Simundsson, but it did produce information producers can use to make the best harvest decisions for their particular operation and management style.

critical harvest window due to factors like weather, manpower or acres left to harvest, I can imagine people using a combination of straight cutting and swathing. It’s very dependent on the producer and their particular operation

but we want people to consider whatever method helps you get all of your canola off in the best possible condition.” The complete Research Report can be downloaded at http://pami.ca/news/

CLAAS dealership opening locally By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer CLAAS farm equipment will soon be available to area farm producers with the arrival of a new dealership. Canada West Harvest Centre has announced plans to open a new dealership in Yorkton, SK. Their latest edition, which will open during the 2017 harvest season, is the dealership’s fourth store to open in three years. It joins three other Canada West Harvest Centre locations in Regina, Saskatoon and Swift Current. “We are very excited to open our fourth dealership and are very proud of our growth in Saskatchewan,” said Doug Tibben, General Manager of Canada West Harvest Centre. “Providing our customers with the

best and most efficient service is our number one goal. Our new location and upgrades to other locations will allow us to support more customers in a timely manner.” Tibben said the plan is to open, in the former Maple Farm Equipment building at 570 Broadway Street East east of Yorkton, as soon as possible. He told Yorkton This Week the painters were expected at the location this week, and he was already in the process of hiring the initial six staff, which will include sales and service people. Tibben said the staff will increase as required, noting their other locations started with similar numbers and the three now have a combined staff of 38. “It’s been a pretty strong growth plan,” he

told YTW, adding he has been hiring new staff at a rate of one per month. Tibben said the growth has been spurred by a continued increase in CLAAS sales and service needs

across Western Canada. He added CLAAS of America and its dealers have made it a top priority to meet this demand with additional facilities and superior customer support.

“Western Canada continues to be a growing market for us, and it’s great to know we have dealers on the ground who are taking advantage of this growth and expanding their pres-

ence to serve the broader market,” said President and General Manager – Sales, Eric Raby in a company release. “Canada West Harvest Centre continues to impress us as well as their customers, and we look forward to watching them grow.” Tibben said in terms of Yorkton it is seen as a good fit for CLAAS. “Yorkton, we believe is a very strong agricultural market,” he said, adding it is the hub of a large farm region they think is a great fit with their growth plan. “…. We believe that will be a very strong base for us.” CLAAS of America Inc. offers a wide variety of technologically innovative tractor, combine, forage harvester, baler and hay tool products. Producers encouraged to consider combine losses Saskatchewan crop producers are being encouraged to make an important calculation to ensure they are maximizing their returns this harvest season. Joel McDonald, program manager of Agricultural Development Services at Prairie Agricultural Machinery Institute (PAMI) in Humboldt, said knowing the rate of combine loss — the amount of crop that ends up on the ground after a pass — is key to making well thought out economic decisions about harvest. “When you ask how much loss

is acceptable, how many bushels per acre or what percentage of yield, there is no wrong amount,” said McDonald. “The error comes if you don’t know how much you’re losing or haven’t considered it.” The problem is that checking for loss takes time and effort. “The best way to check for loss is to disengage the chopper and spreader to drop the residue in a windrow, and then drop or throw a loss pan under the combine while harvesting at a steady rate. Then, the operator or a helper needs to separate the dust, chaff and straw from the grain in the

loss pan.” The final step is to do a calculation to determine the bushels, said McDonald. Multiplying the grain loss rate by total acres and commodity price could result in significant numbers. “It’s possible to lose over five bushels an acre so I recommend that you check for loss as you get into each crop each year. I’ve done these calculations and often the answer is a simple adjustment or slowing down.” It is well documented that higher speeds result in higher loss, said McDonald, but going faster also means covering more

acres per hour and fewer days to completion. Only by knowing the loss rate can a producer calculate, for example, whether it makes financial sense to slow down, recover more crop and invest that saving in an additional combine. “That’s where the economic decision comes in.” McDonald said critical decisions about fleet operations are sometimes made by feel or tradition and not based on data. “A producer can make $20,000 from a good marketing decision but he could also make $20,000 from a good combining decision.” PAMI is a research, agron-

omy, and engineering government organization that conducts applied research, development, prototyping and testing of equipment and processes. PAMI head office is in Humboldt, SK, with locations in Saskatoon, SK, and Portage La Prairie and Winnipeg, MB. Together with their associate, WESTEST, and research centres — Western Beef Development Centre and Applied Bioenergy Centre — they tackle complex machinery issues from across Western Canada and around the globe.

Be aware of crop stage before applying herbicide With farmers across Saskatchewan preparing for harvest, the Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commission is reminding wheat producers to know the moisture content of their crop before applying pre-harvest herbicides and to always apply according to the label information. “With the increased scrutiny many chemicals are receiving, especially from export markets, it’s important to always apply them correctly,” says Sask Wheat Chair Bill Gehl.

“Chemical residues are a major issue for many customers and end users of Canadian wheat.” Farmers see the benefits of using pre-harvest glyphosate to control perennial weeds, but it is important that farmers time their application when the grain moisture content in wheat is less than 30 per-cent, or at the end of the hard dough stage. A thumbnail pressed into the kernel will leave an indent at this stage. “It’s important we work together and follow

the labels to maintain the global reputation of Canadian wheat,” says Gehl. “It’s always a good idea to go to the elevators in your area to see if they have any concerns about wheat treated with glyphosate prior to harvest. The buyers follow the markets closely and know what residues importing countries and customers will accept.” For links to resources on pre-harvest glyphosate, please go to the Sask Wheat website: saskwheatcommission.com.

Crop tour Parkland College and East Central Research Foundation (ECRF) have teamed for a number of years to carry out farm plot research on crops providing data relevant to the local region. A tour of those plots was held earlier this summer giving producers taking part a look at how crops from canola and quinoa to corn and wheat were doing. More information on these and other projects is available at www.ecrf.ca. Staff Photo by Calvin Daniels

Valuable information will be provided The Prairie Agricultural Machinery Institute (PAMI) is about half way through a threeyear research project that will close the knowledge gap around corn forage production in Saskatchewan as an economically viable option for feeding cattle. Interest in corn production for silage is growing in the province, said Dr. Joy Agnew, project manager with PAMI Agricultural Research Services, but agronomic recommenda-

The research, which began in the spring of 2016 and is funded by the Ministry of Agriculture’s Canada-Saskatchewan Growing Forward 2 agreement, the Saskatchewan Cattleman’s Association and PAMI, involves seeding different brands of corn at different rates and with different nitrogen fertilizer rates at each site, Agnew explained. The work is being done at five Agri-ARM (Applied Research Management) sites across the prov-

tions are out of step with new hybrids developed for the province’s particular growing conditions. There is also a lack of information about the cost of corn production compared to other, more traditional silage crops like barley. “Given the high input costs for corn and the slim margins in the beef industry, producers need the most accurate information possible in order to maximize their profitability.”

ince and at PAMI’s test site at Lanigan, she said. Monsanto and Pioneer are supporting the research project by providing seed corn, and SeedHawk donated a planter. After harvest in each of the three years, forage samples are analyzed for total digestible nitrogen and crude protein, key indicators of feed quality. Tons-per-acre yield data for each seed brand and each seeding and nitrogen rate is also being collected.

Although there is still data to come from this year and 2018, Agnew said she is encouraged by what she sees in the results from 2016. “There appear to be some statistically significant trends developing so we’re anxious to see the results we get over the next two years so we can do a detailed economic analysis of production costs and the feed value of corn. All of the data will enable us to provide growers with really valuable informa-

Is technology a boon for agriculture? Cam Dahl, President of Cereals Canada It is hard to believe, but the genetic engineering technology that gave us herbicide resistant canola, corn and soybeans is yesterday’s science. The recombinant DNA techniques that gave us these new farming options have benefited agriculture – through increased yield, reduced input costs and reduction of tillage and summer fallow. The technology has also helped improve Canadian agriculture’s sustainability picture, by reducing fuel use, improving soil organic matter and decreasing erosion. But not everyone in society sees these benefits and the resistance to “GMO” in by some consumers in the market

place continues. So what about the next step in technology? I am a complete science nerd, so I get excited when I read about new gene editing techniques like CRISPRCas9. But not everyone shares this excitement. Should we embrace the advances in genetic science or stick to the older traditional methods of plant breeding? For me, the answer is an enthusiastic “yes, but”. First to the “yes” part of the answer. Unlike rDNA methods, the new gene editing techniques do not introduce DNA from outside of the plant. A new wheat variety derived using the emerging technology will still be 100% wheat DNA. Gene editing will rapidly speed the plant breeding process.

It can take ten to fifteen years (or more) to breed a new variety using traditional plant breeding methods. With the new processes, this will be cut back to five to seven years or even less. Gene editing technology will allow scientists to deliver drought tolerant crops, salt tolerant crops, fusarium resistant crops, resistance to rust, specific nutritional profiles and a likely few beneficial traits that we have not even contemplated. The technology is precise, only changing what needs to be adjusted leaving the beneficial characteristics in place. And the new breeding programs will deliver these traits in ½ the time, or less, of regular plant breeding. Being on the cutting edge of technology is

a competitive advantage for Canadian farmers. We can’t afford to turn our back on advancements in science. The new technology will help agriculture adapt to a changing climate. This is how we will deliver new productive seeds to small landholders around the world who are looking for a path out of poverty. This is how we will feed a growing population. The world really is on the edge of another green revolution. How could one be anything but excited? Now we get to the “but” part of the answer. Many consumers are wary of new science and technology, especially when that science is applied to food. We can’t blaze the new technology trail and ignore the consuming public. We

Agriculture is everyone’s business The Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan has asked the Federal Government to recognize the Ag Industry’s efforts to combat climate change and reconsider the financial effects a Carbon Tax would have on the province’s farmers. APAS submitted their comments to the Federal Government consultation on their proposed Carbon Pricing Backstop policy that would apply to provinces that did not sign on to the Pan Canadian Framework.

“Carbon taxes do not work for agriculture,” says APAS President Todd Lewis. “Producers cannot pass along added costs through the value chain to their customers. There is no effective price signal in current carbon policy that will achieve the intended results. Agricultural producers do not set the prices for their products, operate on very thin profit margins, and endure high levels of risk from market prices and growing conditions.” The backstop policy

contains few details about the proposed application of carbon pricing to agriculture, except for a pricing exemption for farm fuel, which Lewis says is not enough to shelter agriculture from negative impacts. “When you add in the impact of all inputs, costs could go up between $15$20 an acre at $50 per tonne,” Lewis explains. “Because energy and input costs are such a large factor in farm profitability and can’t be passed along the value

Proud to Salute Agriculture

need to acknowledge the concerns and bring consumers on the path with us. Accomplishing this goal is just as important as delivering new traits and varieties. There are two tracks we as an industry need to take simultaneously. First, we need scientists and farmers to come out of the fields and labs to explain why the new technology is good for consumers and our planet. We know how the science will benefit agriculture, but how will the new techniques benefit someone in downtown Toronto with no connection to the farm? We need to deliver real answers to this question before the activists convince the public that we are putting Frankenstein’s monster onto grocery shelves. But our actions should not be confined to trying to convince the consumers. There is a regulatory element as well. And here the Government of Canada must be an active partner. Canada must lead the development of clear,

science-based regulations that include the new gene editing techniques. Regulations based on fact and research, not fear, will facilitate the adoption of the new technology. Second, we need the Government of Canada to actively engage regulatory agencies in key markets to follow the Canadian example and implement a regulatory regime that allows rather than prevents the use of the new plant breeding techniques. This is work that needs to be accomplished before new varieties are planted. Working towards enabling regulations around the world should have a priority that is on par with negotiating the elimination of tariffs and restrictive quotas. The new technology is a potential boon, not just for farmers but for consumers and a hungry world. But agriculture has work to do with consumers and governments around the globe if the possibilities of the science are to be realized.

2017 Canadian Beef Industry Award received A nationally and internationally respected researcher of beef cattle health and welfare has been awarded the 2017 Canadian Beef Industry Award for Outstanding Research and Innovation. Karen SchwartzkopfGenswein, PhD, was honored tonight at the 2017 Canadian Beef Industry Conference. Dr. SchwartzkopfGenswein is a Senior Research Scientist at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Lethbridge, Alberta and holds adjunct appointments at several universities. She has made phenomenal contributions to advancements in the competitiveness and sustainability of the Canadian beef industry through her passion and dedication to progressive science, and exceptional collaboration, leadership and communication. She was honored to receive the award, stating “Those of you who know me will know that this award means a lot to me. My dream will be to work with the industry as long as I can and to be as useful to you as I can.” Dr. SchwartzkopfGenswein’s scientific leadership is exemplified through her contributions to early disease detection, feeding behavior, stress assessment, and acidosis, and she has been instru-

mental in advancing the knowledge and practices related to beef cattle transportation, lameness and pain mitigation. Her research results and expertise has guided the industry through her many contributions including updated Canadian Transport Regulations and Canadian Beef Codes of Practice. Canada is often recognized internationally for its scientific leadership in beef cattle welfare, in large part to Karen’s collaborative, applied, industry-focused research program. Dr. SchwartzkopfGenswein is a pioneer in her field. She recognized early on that animal welfare was an emerging field and sensed the public’s growing interest and lack of understanding as to how livestock are produced. Her realization occurred before the industry fully recognized this area as a high priority for research funding, however she persevered and continues to contribute greatly to the sustainability and public trust of Canadian beef production. “ D r. Karen Schwartzkopf- Genswein has made an incredibly positive impact on the Canadian beef industry by successfully navigating, engaging and influencing at all levels” said Bryan Thiessen, Chair of the Beef

Cattle Research Council (BCRC) and Manager of Namaka Farms near Strathmore, Alberta. “Without her dedication, the beef industry would be challenged to develop a scientific base that allows beef consumers to maintain a high level of confidence in our farming and ranching operations.” Dr. SchwartzkopfGenswein engages all stakeholders in her research to influence changes in livestock management practices that positively impact animal health and welfare. She consults with a large network of industry collaborators including federal and provincial governments and agencies, universities, beef producer associations, and animal health and welfare councils. Her prominence in the field is clearly recognized by her appointment on several national and international committees that are presently setting the standards for on-farm auditing of health and welfare practices in beef cattle production. “Substantial research under Karen’s leadership has given the industry a solid foundation of science-based information that has helped inform regulation and enabled the industry to develop innovative, applicable management practices

that have been adopted and implemented,” added Matt Bowman, Vice-Chair of the BCRC and a producer from Thornloe, Ontario. Her publication record is outstanding with more than 70 peer-reviewed publications, and she has trained numerous graduate and postdoctoral fellows that now hold major

positions in her field both nationally and internationally. She is often called upon to share her research findings with the beef industry across North America, and at the same time, provide assurances to the concerned public that the rearing and management of cattle is conducted in a humane and caring man-

ner. She is continually invited to speak at beef industry events, to mainstream and agriculture media across the country, and scientific conferences in Canada and internationally. She is able to relate and translate her research results into applied solutions that build both trust and confidence with her respective audiences.

The benefits of quitting smoking Smoking has been linked to a number of negative side effects, including raising smokers’ risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease. Quitting smoking can greatly reduce the likelihood of both of those outcomes, but the additional benefits of kicking tobacco to the curb may surprise smokers. According to the American Lung Association, smokers’ heart rates drop to normal levels within 20 minutes of quitting smoking. While not all side effects of quitting smoking are so immediate, many are just as impactful. The health benefits of quitting smoking are seemingly endless. The Office of the U.S. Surgeon General says quitting smoking is the single most important step smokers can take to improve the length

and quality of their lives. The health benefits of quitting smoking are too numerous to list them all, but the following are some of the ways that quitting can improve smokers’ overall health. • Quitting benefits blood pressure. Smokers’ blood pressure levels can return to normal levels within two hours of quitting. Smokers may also notice their fingers and toes starting to feel warm shortly after they quit. That sensation occurs because quitting smoking also improves circulation. • Quitting decreases levels of carbon monoxide in the body. When smoked, lit cigarettes release carbon monoxide, which compromises smokers’ ability to absorb oxygen into the bloodstream. That makes it difficult for red blood cells to

carry oxygen. Body tissue that does not receive an adequate supply of oxygen can cease to function. But according to the American Heart Association, after 12 hours of smoke-free living, the carbon monoxide levels in smokers’ blood return to normal. • Quitting reduces risk of stroke. Stroke is another of the myriad of cardiovascular diseases that has a connection to smoking. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is blocked or when blood vessels in the brain burst and cause brain tissue to die. Smoking increases the buildup of plaque in blood vessels, which can block blood from getting to the brain. Smoking also causes blood vessels to thicken and nar-

A17

row, again compromising the body’s ability to get blood to the brain. Within five to 15 years of quitting smoking, smokers’ risk of having a stroke is the same as that of nonsmokers. • Quitting can make it easier to exercise. Many smokers experience shortness of breath, which can make it difficult to commit to the kind of exercise that promotes short- and long-term health. Smoking damages the cilia, which are tiny structures that push mucus out of the lungs. Cilia damaged by smoking begin to repair within one month of quitting smoking, resulting in fewer coughing fits and instances of shortness of breath. Smokers interested in quitting can visit www.smokefree.gov for more information and support.

A “knuckle sandwich” worth eating Dessert means different things to different people. Some may prefer a piece of cake, while others consider a cup of coffee to be the ideal capper to a delicious meal. Sandwiches may not be the first thing to come to mind when the dessert tray is rolled out, but this delicious recipe for a “Knuckle Sandwich” from Bob Blumer’s “Surreal Gourmet Bites” is sure to please dessert lovers who

want to expand their horizons. KNUCKLE SANDWICH Yields 12 bites •1⁄2 cup whole hazelnuts, ideally blanched (skinned) •2 tablespoons butter •2 pears, skin on, cut into 1⁄8-inch-thick slices, then cored •1 store-bought pound cake •6 tablespoons Nutella or other chocolate-hazel-

nut spread Preheat oven to 350 F. Put hazelnuts on a baking sheet and bake for 12 minutes, or until they begin to brown. If hazelnuts are still in their skins, bake until skins begin to darken, or for blanched nuts, until they turn golden. Remove from oven and let cool. If hazelnuts are still in their skins, place nuts in the center of a clean dish towel, fold the

towel around the nuts, and rub vigorously between

both hands for 15 seconds to release the skins. Discard skins and reserve the nuts. In a sauté pan over medium heat (err on the low side of medium), melt butter and sauté pear slices for approximately 5 minutes per side, or until they begin to brown. Reserve. Cut 6 slices of pound cake, 1⁄4-inch thick. Toast the pound cake in a toaster oven, or on a baking sheet

in a 300 F oven. (It will fall apart in an upright toaster.) Smear 3 cake slices with Nutella or chocolatehazelnut spread. Cover entire Nutella/spread surface with hazelnuts, then press them into the Nutella/spread. Top with a layer of pear slices and cover with second slice of pound cake. Secure each knuckle sandwich with 4 toothpicks, then cut into 4 pieces.

This Week Marketplace | August 25, 2017

If you don’t mind turning on your oven for a few minutes, top off the soup with whimsical kid-made croutons in fun shapes. Serve it in the fancy bowl that you use for special occasions. For 4-6 servings, here’s what you’ll need:

Stir up a no-cook meal for your family on a hot summer day. Just spin the globe until your finger lands on Spain, and think Gazpacho! The season’s freshest tomatoes, cukes, peppers and onions come together in this satisfying and zesty cold Spanish soup. Let your kids harvest some of the ingredients

from your family garden, or choose them in peak condition at a farmer’s market. Teach your schoolage children basic cutting and chopping techniques. They’ll have lots of practice with this recipe!

GAZPACHO •2 cups seeded, finely diced plum tomatoes •1 cup cored, seeded, finely diced yellow bell pepper •1/2 cup peeled, seeded, finely diced cucumbers •1/4 to 1/2 cup finely diced celery •1/4 cup minced carrots

If ever there was a more relevant irrelevant athlete in the history of sports, it is Pete Rose. Everyone remembers that kid in class when we were growing up who just couldn’t seem to control himself or stay out of trouble but was the first guy you’d pick for your kickball team. Wherever Pete Rose went to school, he

was that guy. Pete Rose manages to stay in the news, and he does it better than any other player with the exception of Jackie Robinson. Nobody sits around these days and talks about, say, Walter Johnson, George Sisler, Johnny Mize or Nap Lajoie. But we still talk about Pete Rose. The kid stays in the picture. The Philadelphia Phillies wanted to induct Rose into their hall of fame a week ago, and they had planned on passing out little bobbleheads of his likeness to all the

fans in attendance. As per the norm, the deal didn’t go down because Rose has some alleged NSFW issues. The Phillies had good intentions, but if there’s anything Pete Rose does better than hitting a ball with a bat, it’s staying out of halls of fame. I love Philadelphia, and I love Philadelphia fans. I can relate a story about the time I was in a very famous resort town in New Jersey, and one day, over ice-cream sodas, conversation occurred with a few darling tourists from Dallas. Texas and New Jersey

•1/4 cup minced celery leaves •1/4 cup minced yellow onion •2 cups tomato vegetable juice (such as V8) •1/2 cup clam juice (optional) •2 tablespoons minced chives •2 tablespoons olive oil •1 tablespoon red wine vinegar •Juice of one lemon •Salt and pepper to taste

Scoop into a serving bowl and top with shaped croutons.

Let your child mix all ingredients together in a large bowl. Refrigerate for at least two hours to chill and enhance the flavor.

Make shapes from bread with favorite mini cookie cutters. Combine melted butter or olive oil with garlic and

have some sort of kindred spirit. We don’t ever care about the price of gas, we don’t mind talking loud, and you have to presume that we’re packing heat. The person across the way started talking smack about Eli Manning and the Giants, and the Giant fans, in turn, returned fire about Tony Romo and Gov. Chris Christie, whom everyone in New Jersey hates. (There were no Jets fans in attendance because nobody ever talks about the Jets.) For dangerous fun, I pointed out one of the patrons in an Eagles hat and said to the Dallas fans to pay close attention. “At least we’re not EAGLE fans,” I said with exaggeration, and like

clockwork, within a microsecond, the Eagle fan’s head shot up. “DON’T EVEN GO THERE!” In context, it wasn’t a very genial reply, but it did beg my next question. “Go where? The Super Bowl? Where the Eagles will never go in your lifetime?” The barstool screeched across the floor. He tried to make a rush, but just like the Eagles front line he was subdued with ease, and the staff quickly punted him out the door. “See?” I said to the Dallas fan. “That’s a Philadelphia fan. Half of that city will literally fight you if you talk smack about their team.” And this is the town that won’t stand by

SHAPED CROUTONS •1 loaf French bread sliced lengthwise with crust removed •3 tablespoons butter or olive oil •1 garlic clove, pressed •1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese (optional) •Salt and pepper to taste

Pete Rose and toss around a little doll?

I’m not in any way suggesting that the allegations regarding Rose are something to make light of, but they are just that — allegations. We don’t know what happened in his private life, but I think we all know far too much about Pete Rose’s life anyway. And seriously, Pete ... Philadelphia didn’t back you up? That’s hall of fame stuff right there.

We know you’re the hit king, but after a while you have to admit that you’ve taken too many hits, too. Sooner or later you have to call the game.

August 25, 2017 | This Week Marketplace

You easily can prepare delicious meals for your family and friends without spending a lot of money. My frugal relative runs a small gourmet catering business. She manages to put on high-end events with a low-end budget by planning carefully and shopping at discount stores for ingredients and supplies. Her freezer is her friend, because she often buys items on sale and then packages and stores them for later use. Her fabulous food and events are always beautifully presented without breaking the budget. Try these tips to save time, money and stress when making gourmet meals for your friends or family. • Compare brands and look at the cost of food per serving. If you’ll use all of it, the economy size is often (but not always) a better price per serving. Bring a calculator to compare unit prices. (Sales tags often do not compute unit prices.) Generic brands tend to be the best deal, and they often are just as good as the name-brand items. • Where you shop may cost you money. Bulk food stores aren’t always a good choice. You may be tempted to buy foods you don’t need and can’t store properly. • Buy canned, packaged non-food items and personal-care items from discount stores. You’ll pay more for these at the grocery store. • Stock up on budgetfriendly, often-used nonperishable or easy-tofreeze foods when they’re on sale. • Nutritious foods are a better value. Foods high in fat and sugar — like cookies, chips, doughnuts and soft drinks — have fewer nutrients than fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lowfat milk and lean meats. Remember, the fiber in fruits and vegetables fills you up and keeps hunger away. Auctions

• Buy spices at the dollar store. Spices are typically overpriced at supermarkets, yet you can pay $1 and actually get more of the exact same product because their packages are bigger. You often can use dried spices in place of fresh without sacrificing flavor. • Get more servings out of your favorite recipes by adding nutritious ingredients! Add brown rice to soups or stews, frozen vegetables to favorite pasta dishes, or rinsed and mashed black beans to burgers. • Cook once and eat twice. Buy enough ingredients to cook more than one meal and freeze mealsized portions so there’s no need to buy frozen dinners. This also will ensure you use leftovers and don’t waste food. • Store food properly. Food that gets tossed is money lost. Air-tight resealable containers and bags are less expensive at discount stores and save money. • Breakfast foods like eggs are less expensive and make a great protein for a main dish. Try my delicious recipe for Crab, Spinach and Roasted Red Pepper Frittata using ingredients you easily can find at discount stores. It’s perfect for breakfast, lunch or dinner, and provides a gourmet touch to your table without breaking your budget.

•1 teaspoon ground black pepper •1 teaspoon salt •1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce •2 teaspoons olive oil •1/4 cup chopped onion or 1 tablespoon dried onion or onion powder •3 cloves garlic, minced or 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder •1 (13.5 ounce) can spinach, rinsed, drained and chopped, or 1 (10-ounce) package fresh or 1 (10ounce) package frozen and thawed, drained and chopped •6 ounces canned lump crab meat, drained, flaked

CRAB, SPINACH AND ROASTED RED PEPPER FRITTATA •8 medium to large eggs •1/3 cup fresh or canned evaporated milk •1/4 cup grated Parmesan or Romano cheese •1 tablespoon Italian seasoning or 1/2 tablespoon each dried basil and oregano Auctions

onion or garlic powder, mix them into the spinach and proceed with the recipe. Add the spinach to the pan and cook for 1-2 minutes. Evenly sprinkle the crab and roasted peppers over the spinach mixture. Pour egg mixture over vegetables and crab in skillet. Cook over medium heat. As mixture sets, run a spatula around edge of skillet, lifting egg mixture and slightly tilting the pan so uncooked portion flows underneath. Continue cooking and lifting edges until egg mixture is almost set (surface will be moist). Bake about 5 minutes

Some still unsure of what cancer is Cancer can affect anyone. Sometimes it strikes with no warning, while other times people may have a genetic predisposition. Various medical organizations say there are between 100 and 200 different types of cancer. Everyone has heard of cancer, but some are still unsure of what cancer is. Defining cancer The organization Cancer Research UK defines cancer as abnormal cell growth. Cancer cells are cells that divide in an uncontrolled way. New human cells normally grow and divide to form new cells as the body requires them. As healthy cells grow old or become damaged, they die off and new cells take their place. However, when cancer develops, this process goes haywire. Damaged cells become even more abnormal and can survive when they would normally die. These cells keep multiplying and eventually can form lumps or masses of

tissue called tumors. This is the case in most cancers, with the exception of leukemia, wherein cancer prohibits normal blood function due to abnormal cell division in the bloodstream. Not all lumps in the body are tumors. Lumps that remain in place and do not spread to other areas of the body can be harmless or benign. According to the American Cancer Society, cancerous tumors are malignant, which means they can spread into, or invade, nearby tissues. Cancer stages actually are determined based by how far cancerous cells have spread beyond their point of origin. Cancer stages Cancer is staged according to particular criteria based on each individual type of cancer. Generally speaking, lower stages of cancer, such as stage 1 or 2, refer to cancers that have not spread very far. Higher stages of cancer, such as 3,

mean cancer has branched out more. Stage 4 refers to cancer that has spread considerably. Common forms of cancer Cancer can occur just about anywhere in the body. Cancers of the breast, lung, colon, and prostate cancers affect males and females in high numbers. Classifying cancer involves understanding where the cancer originated. Cancer Treatment Centers of America offers these classifications: • Carcinomas begin in the skin or tissues that line the internal organs. • Sarcomas develop in the bone, cartilage, fat, muscle or other connective tissues. • Leukemia begins in the blood and bone marrow. • Lymphomas start in the immune system. • Central nervous system cancers develop in the brain and spinal cord. Cancer is treated in various ways and depends on the cancer’s stage, type

and effects on the body. A person’s age as well as his or her current health status also may play a role in treatment decisions made by both the patient and his or her medical team. Surgery may be conducted to remove a tumor, while chemotherapy employs chemicals to kill cancerous cells. Radiation therapy, which uses X-rays to direct radiation toward cancerous cells, is another potential cancer treatment. The side effects of

each treatment vary, and there are ways to mitigate these effects. Why does cancer occur? Cancer develops for various reasons — some of which may not be fully understood. The National Cancer Institute states genetic changes that cause cancer can be inherited from a person’s parents. Cancers can also arise during a person’s lifetime as a result of errors that occur as cells divide or salad.

because of damage to DNA that results from certain environmental exposures. Cancer-causing substances include the chemicals in tobacco smoke. Ultraviolet rays from the sun also have been linked to cancer. Learning more about cancer can help people reduce their risk for developing this potentially deadly disease. Individuals should always speak with their physicians if they have specific questions about cancer.

In a medium bowl, combine mayonnaise and ketchup. Stir in cucumber, onion, feta cheese, olives and basil. Add tomatoes. Mix well to combine.
