On Friday, Sept. 29, swarms of students gathered at Saltcoats Regional Park for the 33rd annual Autumn Summit cross-country meet. Athletes came from

all over Saskatchewan and Western Manitoba to take part in the huge event. The sun was shining and the wind was brisk to make it a perfect day to run.

SaskPower helps customers save at the till SaskPower is once again making it easier for customers to improve energy efficiency in their homes. The Fall Retail Discount Program is on now until October 31. In addition to savings on select EnergyStar LED lights, controls, and fixtures, discounts will also be offered on a range of home products like smart power bars, smart plugs, and smart thermostats. “Every year there are more and more

new technologies available that can make a big difference in a household’s overall electricity use,” said Janson Anderson, SaskPower’s Director of Customer Programs. “We’re glad to once again help people purchase these relatively simple to use items that can save them money while also helping the environment.” Switching to Energy-Star rated LED light bulbs is an easy way for customers to reduce their power consumption and in

turn, help lower their monthly bill. LEDs use about 80 per cent less electricity and last about 15 times longer than incandescent light bulbs. Discounts on these products will be applied instantly at the till of any participating retailer. A list of participating retailers can be found on saskpower. com. You can also check your local flyers or visit participating retailers to learn more about SaskPower’s Retail Discount

Program. #sksavenow At A Glance • SaskPower offering instant savings at the till on select energy-efficient products from now until October 31 • Products include Energy-Star rated LEDs, smart power bars and plug-ins, and smart thermostats • Visit saskpower.com for a full list of discounted products and participating retailers across Saskatchewan.

YELLOW TAGby EVENT Harvest delayed wet weather Wet and cool weather delayed harvest for most producers this past week, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s weekly Crop Report. Seventy-eight per cent of the crop is now in the bin, slightly up from 75 per cent last week. Harvest progress remains ahead of the five-year (2012-2016) average of 74 per cent for this time of year. Fifteen per cent of the crop is swathed or ready to straight-cut. Many producers expect to be back in the field when warmer weather returns and crops can dry sufficiently. Harvest is most advanced in the southwestern region, where 92 per cent of the crop is now combined. The southeastern region has 88 per cent combined, the west-central region 81 per cent and the east-central region 77 BAKER’S DOZEN GLUTEN FREE BREAD CLUB *PURCHASE TWELVE LOAVES OF GLUTEN FREE BREAD AND RECEIVE YOUR THIRTEENTH FREE* (Cannot be combined with any other offer)

Ninety-four per cent of the mustard, 91 per cent of the durum, 88 per cent of the chickpeas, 84 per cent of the barley, 77 per cent of the spring wheat, 68 per cent of the canola and oats, 66 per cent of the canaryseed, 37 per cent of the flax, and 18 per cent of the soybeans have now been combined. Twenty-seven per cent of the canola is swathed or ready to straight-cut.

Although the rain was welcomed by many producers in the drier areas of the province, those in the central and northern areas need warm and dry weather soon so that harvest can resume. Rainfall this past week ranged from nil to 36 mm in the Debden and Hafford areas. Topsoil moisture conditions continue to improve with the recent rainfall, although the subsoil will need significant new moisture to replenish what has been lost to the hot and dry weather. Across the province, topsoil moisture on cropland is rated as 29 per

cent adequate, 36 per cent short, and 35 per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 22 per cent adequate, 34 per cent short, and 44 per cent very short. The extended period of hot and dry conditions this summer has negatively affected production, particularly in the southern and central regions. Canola crops suffered the most, as much of the crop was in full flowering during the hottest time of the season; there are indications that yield has been reduced† by as much as 75 per cent in some areas.

Soybean crops have been slow to mature and there are reports of pods not filling completely. Many lentil and cereal crops were unable to fill properly as they ran out of moisture much earlier than normal; lighter bushel weights and smaller seeds have resulted. There are also reports of reduced protein content in cereal crops. While yields have been directly affected by the extremely dry conditions, crop quality has been good to excellent with minimal disease issues. The majority of crop damage this past week was

due to wildlife, strong winds, frost and lack of moisture. Pastures and hay land have suffered greatly from the lack of moisture and will need significant rainfall. Producers are busy combining, completing fall field work, moving cattle and hauling bales. Seventy per cent of the crop was in the bin and 22 per cent was swathed or ready to straight cut. Rain kept some producers out of the field for a few days. Crop quality remained low due to disease and issues such as bleaching, staining, and sprouting.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Transformers: The Last Knight” (PG-13) — The fifth installment of the Transformers saga brings mysticism to the machines as we get the history of Transformers on Earth from Merlin (Stanley Tucci) and the Knights of the Round Table. There is a new, even more dangerous threat against the planet and humanity itself, and again, we are down to a ragtag group of survivors to save us. Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlburg) and his tiny cadre of remaining Autobots team with street urchins (the very adorable Isabela Moner as Izabella), astronomer/historian Sir Edmund Burton (Anthony Hopkins) and a descendant of Merlin himself to thwart the desires of Quintessa, leader of Cybertron. There’s no real need to know any backstory. This movie is nearly 2-1/2 hours of Michael Bayfest start to finish — explosion, explosion, heartwarming moment, explosion, victory. “Queen of the Desert” (PG-13) — Werner Herzog came out of near retirement to give us a sweeping biopic of Gertrude Bell (Nicole Kidman) — explorer of the Middle East and inspirational feminist figure. A privileged young woman, Bell had no desire for debutante balls and was subsequently shipped off to live with relatives in Iran, where through years of exploration and

Claire Holt in “47 Meters Down” contact-making, she grew into a powerful diplomatic force, negotiating on behalf of the British government. Instead of focusing on Bell’s contributions, Herzog chooses a narrow and tragic romantic storyline involving a junior diplomat in the Tehran office, Henry Cadogan (James Franco). The result is a flat profile of a robust figure. Robert Pattinson turns in a passable T.E. Lawrence, with whom Bell forged a platonic partnership. “47 Meters Down” (PG13) — What’s better than a relaxing, sun-filled vacation south of the border? How about intentionally submerging oneself in the ocean in the middle of shark town with a limited supply of oxygen? Super fun, sign me up! For sisters Kate (Claire Holt) and Lisa (Mandy Moore), this is what vacation looks like, but when the cord tethering their protective diving cage to the boat snaps and the cage plunges to the ocean floor, things get real. The sisters must contend with circling great white

sharks, and it’s terrifying. The MPA rating is PG-13, but it’s just on the right side of scary. “Pop Aye” (NR; subtitled) — Adrift and disillusioned with his purpose in life and contribution as an architect, Thana (Thaneth Warakulnukroh) happens upon an elephant — nicknamed Popeye — in the streets of Bangkok. Lo and behold, it’s an elephant from his youth and hometown, one with whom he instantly reconnects. Impulsively, he purchases the pachyderm and determines to bring him home. So begins a charming journey for man and beast, and the delightful expedition is populated with interesting characters and revelations along the way. Your hearing difficulties could be caused by damaged hearing hair cells inside your inner ear (cochlea). Taylor Mountain of Regina putts as Dorian Bush, left, and Trevor Lyons, both of Yorkton watch.

Last Chance Tournament winner Andrew Mountain of Regina gets himself out of some trouble with a toss out from behind some trees.

Mountain boys shine at Melville disc golf event The final two have qualified for the upcoming Farrell Agencies Champions Challenge Disc Golf Tournament, bringing the qualified field to 15. The Mountain brothers Taylor and Andrew, both of Regina finished one-two at the Parkland Association of Disc Golf Tournament in Melville Sunday. The event attracted golfers from Regina, Percival, Yorkton and Melville. “We were really satisfied with our first event here in Melville,” said local organizer Josh Gregory. “We hope it’s just a first step though. We want to work with the City, Regional Park, schools, service clubs and anyone else who is interested in running some learn-toplay clinics, and to host a regular disc golf night in 2018.” The event was the first disc golf tournament held at the Melville course making it a challenge for those entered to progress to the season finale for the PADG Tournament Series. Younger brother Andrew Mountain would finish the day at a minusone 103 for 36, with Taylor Mountain one stroke back with an even 104. “Melville was a really interesting course,” said Andrew. “Much more technical than my home course, (Regina), which was a nice change. “My approach and the key to doing well has been to practice putting for an hour or so the day before

to try and get the short shots down and hopefully not miss any short shots.” Taylor said he too liked the Melville course. “I really enjoyed playing the course in Melville. You could tell that some of the locals spent time getting the course ready for us, which was much appreciated,” he said. Taylor said the course should be a real asset to the city. “We had no disc golf at all when I was growing up in Assiniboia, so it would be great to see the sport catch on in Melville. It is super cheap to get started at and lots of fun.” As for his approach Sunday it was just to enjoy a near ideal day, and to make the cut. “Honestly, going into Sunday I was hoping to qualify. I finished third and just out of a spot at two events earlier in the year,” he said. “I played pretty aggressively in the first round, and racked up a bunch of birdies. However some poor choices led me to an equally sized bunch of pars. “I think I am going to have to step up my consistency if I want to have success against the other ‘champions’. “I think the biggest key for me during this tourney was staying level headed. I had some bad misses early that could have derailed my round, but I was happy to have kept my head it in

and fought back to stay at even.” Andrew said it took him a bit of time to adapt to the tonal targets. “This was my first round playing with tonals instead of baskets which was my biggest challenge as you need the shots to be more accurate since the tonals are a slightly smaller target,” he said. Taylor said the Melville course requires the ability to hit the portals. “A number of holes in Melville require more accuracy than my home course in Regina, so hitting the lines I needed was tough and with that came the challenge of keeping it together and recovering when a tree moved into the path of my disc,” he said with a smile. In terms of the great challenges the brothers saw that differently. “I found number four to be the most difficult as you are forced to throw at a very small gap with plenty of trees in the way and no real viable other path to throw,” said Andrew. “I think hole 10 provides a good challenge. It is deceivingly simple and straight, but an early tree or two hit on that one can cost you some strokes,” said Taylor, adding “a big thanks to Josh Gregory and Becky Musqua, who mowed a bunch of grass and created an island hole on number 14. It was a fun challenge.”

Taylor also gave a shout out to the local efforts regarding the growth of disc golf. “It seems like the business community in the parkland region has been quite supportive of the disc golf events throughout the season,” he noted. “Thanks to all of the sponsors who help to make these tournaments possible. If you haven’t had the chance to try disc golf yet, find a buzzz (disc), and give it a try. It’s a great way to get some exercise and meet new people.” Taylor Mountain also took the Yorkton Dodge Best Drive award, with Trevor Lyons of Yorkton capturing the Asessippi Beach and Campground Closest to the Pin award. Plans are already under way to host an open

tournament at the Melville course in early spring 2018. People interested in the event can follow the PADG on its Facebook page, or email padg.yorkton@gmail. com “We know we have a competitive course here, so we are confident a tournament will attract a lot of interest,” said Gregory. “And moving forward, who knows, we would love to raise the money to install regulation disc golf baskets and make this course truly of the best in the province. Who knows after that, the Saskatchewan Open hosted here? The sky is the limit for this sport.” The Farrell Agencies Champions Challenge will be held Sunday, Oct. 15, at Asessippi National Disc Golf Course, (north of Russell, MB.) with a 10 a.m.

local time tee-off for the opening round. The PADG is inviting all players to the 2017 Champions Challenge, which will also host a recreational season wind-up tournament to run alongside the main event. DEAR DR. ROACH: After a few months of stress eating, I have gained a lot of weight. People swear that the Paleo diet would help me lose weight and feel better. Do you recommend it? — H.C. ANSWER: Most diets have good points and bad points, and work better or worse for different people. The Paleo diet is no exception. The theory behind Paleo is that humans are best adapted to the diet that Paleolithic man ate 10,000 or more years ago, which was high in meat, with relatively large amounts of fruits and vegetables, and no grains or dairy. I disagree with the theory on several points, especially that I think it is a fundamental misunderstanding of adaptation, in that there’s no guarantee

that evolution produces a “best” adaptation, merely one that’s good enough. Paleolithic man ate what he had to to survive, not necessarily what was optimal for his health. The part about the Paleo diet that I do like is its recommendation against highly refined grains and other processed foods. I don’t agree with the usual recommendation to eat so much meat. It’s important to remember that the meat Paleolithic man ate, until just before being eaten, was busily running away from him and did not have remotely the fat content of today’s supermarket meat. The nuts and vegetables available to modern man are vastly different from those available to Paleolithic man, according to a great talk from Christina Warriner. Finally, there is abundant evidence that preagricultural man, from many different societies, had atherosclerosis in the unlikely event he lived into his 40s. DEAR DR. ROACH: In my late teens and early 20s, I suffered bad acne that resulted in scarring that is still visible now,

even though I am in my 40s. I assume it will be visible for the rest of my life. My acne was cured when I took Accutane. Now I also suffer from ulcerative colitis. Even though I can’t make a direct connection as a side effect of Accutane, the symptoms of UC first showed shortly after I completed my treatments for acne. Now that my children are entering their teens, is it possible for them to avoid my fate? Are acne problems like mine hereditary, or can they avoid the problems I experienced with proper hygiene? — B.B. ANSWER: Acne, familiar to almost all teenagers, is caused mostly by the bacteria P. acnes, but also by hormonal changes that affect the skin oils and cells, predisposing the skin to bacterial growth. Hygiene has a limited effect on acne, with overwashing and oily cosmetics causing the most problems. Acne does tend to run in families, so your children are more likely to have worse acne than usual. HARVEST REPORT

Farming for health

Staff Photo by Devin Wilger

The agriculture community in Yorkton is banding together to make money for a new hospital in Yorkton by farming together. The Farming for Health project saw Yorkton New Holland, Pattison Agriculture and Rocky Mountain Equipment

work together to get the canola crop off the field and into LDM. Final results from the project will be released at the Health Foundation gala on October 21.

Quick action urged on Bill C-49 In a presentation to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, the Alberta Wheat Commission (AWC) urged the quick passage of Bill C-49 – historic federal legislation that promises to provide long-term solutions to Canada’s grain transportation issues which have plagued the industry for decades. AWC’s presentation also recommended amendments to the legislation that would improve the effectiveness of long haul interswitching as a tool to improve railway competition. As currently proposed, AWC believes the new interswitching provisions may be less effective than those

enacted under the former Bill C-30. Overall, AWC is pleased with measures in Bill C-49 – the Transportation Modernization Act, that will help correct the imbalance between the market power of railways and shippers and ensure that the cost of system failures are not passed down the supply chain to farmers. “AWC appreciates the federal government’s commitment to legislation that will improve railway competition and accountability in Canada,” said Kevin Auch, AWC Chair. “AWC has been pressing for rail reform since our organization began in 2012 and we saw the invitation to speak today as another opportunity to

ensure the farmer voice is truly represented as this legislation is developed.” As a member of the Crop Logistics Working Group (CLWG), AWC also supports a series of suggested amendments that deal with more timely reporting of railway service data and requirements that the railways provide more detailed volume forecasts and operational plans to the Minister at the beginning of each crop year. The CLWG is a regular forum for grain industry stakeholders to identify supply chain challenges and commercial solutions aimed at enhancing the transparency and effectiveness of the grain handling transportation system. “We see our membership with the

CLWG as an excellent opportunity to pass producer feedback directly to Minister MacAulay as it relates to grain movement by rail,” said Auch. “In providing these amendments, we hope to see long-awaited legislation that fosters growth of the agriculture sector and supports Canada’s reputation as a reliable supplier of grain to our international customers.” AWC encourages the federal government to continue the conversation with Canada’s agriculture sector as it works to develop the regulations to support the spirit and the intention of this legislation that seeks to create a more responsive, competitive and accountable rail system in Canada.

Prairie barley commissions fund CMBTC The Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre (CMBTC) announced it will continue to receive funding from Alberta Barley, the Manitoba Wheat & Barley Growers Association (MWBGA) and the Saskatchewan Barley Development Commission (SaskBarley) to support

its operations serving Canada’s malting barley value chain. The announcement comes after the July 31 conclusion of the Western Canadian Deduction (WCD) check-off, which provided the CMBTC with $0.03 per tonne of barley delivered to Canadian

Grain Commission licensed companies over the past five years. The three provincial barley associations have taken over the collection and administration of the check-off for their respective provinces and committed to continue supporting the valued work the

Vintage harvest It was a step back in time for those visiting the Dave Weber farm north of Springside this fall as a demonstration of harvest techniques from decades earlier took place; including an oat crop being cut by a John Deere binder circa 1946 pulled by a vintage 1953 John Deere tractor. Matthew Weber rides the binder while Harvey Drotar, Milton Wurks and Harvey Penner ride the tractor.

Once the bundles of oats were left behind by the binder it was the job of other farm workers to collect them into stooks where they stayed in the field until collected and hauled to a stationary threshing machine (the precursor to the modern combine). YEA takes on innovative film project By Calvin Daniels Staff Writer The Yorkton Exhibition Association has embarked on a new project which is forging new ground for the long-time organization. JeanAnne Teliske, General Manager with the YEA, explained they are taking part in creating a new film on oats. The idea came through Naomie Paley with Saskatchewan Agriculture, said Teliske, adding she had seen a film the Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association had done. Paley said the idea is not new, but there are still many avenues to explore, noting in Ontario commodity education films on dairy and cheese have been created. The idea began to be bounced around by the YEA because the idea of a film dedicated to education youth and consumers was seen as a positive one. “It’s new, innovative. It’s something for the exhibition association to be involved in to promote

Using a drone to get shots for an upcoming film about oats. agriculture,” said Teliske. The big step was determining what aspect of agriculture to address in

the film, but with a local processor, the decision was soon made to promote oats.

Proposed federal tax changes cause concern The Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan is expressing its strong concern about proposed changes to Federal tax rule impacting small business corporations. “The Canadian Agricultural industry is strongly based on the family farm, and many farm families have used incorporation as a way to ensure that their farms can be passed from generation to generation,” said APAS President Todd Lewis, who sits on the CFA Board. “These proposed changes could have severe impacts on multi-generational farm operations.” The CFA campaign is asking producers to join other business organizations in calling on Members of Parliament to extend the consultation period, which was announced July 17 and ends October 2. “This federal govern-

ment consultation is taking place right when we are busy harvesting our crops, and there has been nowhere near enough time to understand the implications of the proposals,” Lewis continued. “The changes are very technical in nature, and we

need more time to fully understand their potential impacts.” Lewis added that APAS would be contacting Federal Finance Minister Morneau and MPs to express concern, and would be mobilizing APAS members to assist.

“We wanted something local to Yorkton and area,” said Teliske. That choice opened the doors to a couple of additional funding partners as both Grain Millers and the Prairie Oat Growers Association came on board, said Teliske. The film will be a short one, five, or six minutes, covering all aspects of oat production. “We’re trying to tell the story from field to table,” said Teliske. The film will have two versions, a standard one, and one using virtual reality technology, with special headsets being bought so viewers can see the film in 3D, virtual reality. The tech will allow, as an example, the wearer to “stand inside a grain bin and see it from every angle,” said Teliske. “…. We are kind of on the cusp of this new technology.” The funding partnership will purchase 20 headsets. Teliske said the headsets will be used for trade show promotions, and for students through Agriculture in the Classroom. She added they held discussions with the school group to make sure the finished film hit upon the right things to fit curriculum. Paley said it is the educational opportunity of the film, for both students and consumers which make the project so appealing to those involved. “It will be pretty cool

… to take it into the classroom and let them experience it,” she said. The first phase of filming took place on a Foam Lake area farm recently, and the crew will return later this fall to take foot-

age of production at Grain Millers. The final product, which will be posted on various online platforms for public access, is expected to be released early in 2018.

Team recommends pan-Canadian platform for agrifood value chain innovation What do a global satellite communications corporation, a crop nutrients and fertilizer company and an agriculture college have in common? For Canada’s MDA, Agrium and Olds College, all have something significant to contribute through innovation to the way Canadians enjoy the food they eat and the various products exported beyond our borders -- from even before it’s planted to the time it arrives on consumers’ plates. The three are among the diverse groups and individuals joining forces to accelerate agrifood innovation efforts through a unique collaboration framework. The initiative is intended to better harness the effects of innovation investment working collectively between industry, government and researchers. It’s also unique in that it is intended to create a pan-Canadian platform to help the sector’s diverse, and sometimes disparate, “silos” align more coherently to identify and resolve challenges in the agrifood value chain. While the Smart AgriFood Super Cluster (SASC) is administered from the Calgary region, it encompasses partners across Canada, recently wrapped several weeks of

necks that currently impair efficiency, added Whitelaw. The federal government’s supercluster policy thrust is a direct result of guidance supplied to the federal cabinet from an external economic advisory council created to suggest ways of rethinking various aspects of the Canadian economy to help the country remain competitive globally. The supercluster program is administered by the federal Innovation, Science and Economic Development department. Groups from across the economy submitted intent letters midsummer. Preliminary announcements as to which groups will be selected are expected sometime in the fall. SASC’s “platform approach” is intended to accommodate innovation efforts in cropping, livestock, digital and agrifood processing technologies. Via those pillars, it also seeks to link companies, not-for-profits, research

intense collaboration to pull together a proposal for the federal government’s innovation supercluster program. The program, announced in the March budget, created a $950-million fund to which groups across the country have submitted “letters of intent” describing their various approaches to innovation. SASC steering committee members approached innovation from a systems perspective, in order to create a Canada-wide platform to help link together key nodes and expertise in the country’s agrifood value chain, noted committee chair Bill Whitelaw. “We felt it important to create something that constructively brings together all the players that comprise the ways we do farming and food,” he noted. “Our approach is intended to resolve some of the fragmentation dynamics that often hinder innovation efforts. Even as part of our proposal process, we had wonderful conversations with other cluster initiatives.” The supercluster concept, already used in the United Kingdom and Europe, is intended to help Canada develop more effective approaches to innovation by identifying and working through “pinch points” and bottle-

organizations and post-secondary institutions from coast to coast in a way that creates new employment, global export opportunities and safer and more sustainable food production. If invited to the pro-

gram’s full proposal stages, the pillars will be the basis on which specific projects are initiated, Whitelaw noted. “Ottawa would like to see innovation as the driving force that significantly

improves Canada’s already strong ag and food leadership position globally,” said Whitelaw. “Moving the country upward in global export rankings could create billions of new economic impact.”

Biochar shows benefits as manure lagoon cover Manure is a reality in raising farm animals. Manure can be a useful fertilizer, returning valued nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium to the soil for plant growth. But manure has problems. Odor offensiveness, gas emissions, nutrient runoff, and possible water pollution are just a few. Timing is also a problem. Livestock produce manure 24/7 – even when it is impractical or unwise to move it to the field. Delivering manure to the field needs to be timed to nutrient needs, soil moisture levels, and temperature. How can farmers handle this timing issue, as well as other manure problems? In cities, sewers and water treatment facilities deal with human waste. On farms, manure storage lagoons can hold the manure until the time is ripe. This solves the timing and delivery problem – but what about odor and gas emissions? In addition to the inconvenience of odor, manure can release gases connected to air pollution and climate change. Methane, nitrous oxide, ammonia, and hydrogen sulfide are examples. Scientist Brian Dougherty and colleagues researched methods to reduce these negatives while potentially adding some positives: biochar covers. Biochar is plant matter, such as straw, woody debris, or corn stalks, that has been heated to high temperatures in a low- to

no-oxygen environment. The result is a black, carbon-rich material similar to charcoal. Dougherty says biochar is like a sponge. “Biochar provides a structure with lots of empty pore space” he says. “The outer surface may appear small but the interior surface area is absolutely massive. A few ounces of biochar can have an internal surface area the size of a football field. There is a lot of potential there for holding on to water and nutrients.” In addition to its hidden storage capacity, the surface of the biochar tends to have a chemical charge. This gives biochar the ability to attract and hold nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium ions, metals, and other compounds. Biochar can also float (some types more than others). That attribute means it can trap gases at the water’s surface. Growing up on a dairy farm, Dougherty is no stranger to the challenges of manure storage. “Once I realized the properties of biochar, I thought it had good potential for a lagoon cover,” he says. Dougherty’s research studied two liquid dairy manures with differing nutrient levels. It also studied two types of biochars, made at different temperatures. Biochar is somewhat fickle, showcasing different properties when created at different temperatures. He also included pails of manure with a straw cover for comparison, and au natural with

no cover as his control. The research found that the biochars picked up the most nutrients from the more concentrated manure with a higher nutrient content. “The biochar will take up whatever it can, so if there are more nutrients available the potential for nutrient uptake is greater,” Dougherty says. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are nutrients with the greatest economic value on a farm, but applying them in excess of what the crop can take up can lead to nutrient loss to the watershed. Dougherty also measured the ammonia at the top of each pail. Ammonia and sulfates are the main source of manure’s odor. The cooler-crafted biochar did best here, reducing ammonia by 72-80%. It also floated better. But because it floated better and tended to repel water, it was less effective at attracting and attaching to the nutrients than the warmercrafted biochar. Biochar is currently more expensive to buy than straw, but Dougherty is undaunted. Biochar could have a good economic return: excess farm and forestry residue could be used to create the biochar on site. This process generates energy that could be used heat water and warm buildings during colder months. There is also potential for generating electricity, fuels, and other by-products using more sophisticated equipment. After its use in the

Proud to Salute Agriculture

lagoon, the biochar could be spread on fields as needed. Any excess could be sold as a high-value fertilizer product. And biochar has great environmental benefits. “Anything you can do to prevent gases from escaping the lagoon is a good thing,” Dougherty says. “Biochar applied to soils — particularly poorer quality soils — is very helpful. Making biochar can also help reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. A portion of the carbon dioxide that was taken in during plant growth ends up as a very stable form of carbon in the soil. The overall picture has multiple benefits.” Dougherty’s research did not avoid the obvious.

Would biochar or straw best improve the dairy air? Since the human nose knows, Dougherty recruited a panel of judges. The weather intervened, however, with freezing temperatures and rain affecting the odor intensity over the 12 week trial. Despite these challenges, three different biochars were shown to reduce odor from liquid dairy manure, whereas a straw cover was not effective. “Determining the best trade-off of biochar properties will be an important next step,” Dougherty says. “More research could find the right biochar production temperature, particle size, pH, and float properties. The potential is there.” This portion of the

research still needs to be sniffed out. Read more about Dougherty’s biochar research in Journal of Environmental Quality. Oregon State University’s Agriculture Research Foundation and Agricultural Sciences Bioenergy Education Program funded this research.

Family farm groups from three countries slam NAFTA reboot based on TPP As the formal talks to renegotiate NAFTA begin in Washington, DC this week, family farm organizations from Canada, the United States and Mexico denounce the direction of the talks. Despite repeated demands by civil society organizations in all three countries, the governments have refused to open the talks to the public or to publish proposed negotiating texts. All signs point to negotiations designed to increase agribusiness exports and corporate control over the food system rather than to support fair and sustainable trade and farming systems. The Trump administration has stated its clear intention to continue its trend of putting multinational corporations’ narrow interests first by using the same blueprint that shaped the failed TransPacific Partnership (TPP). A review of submissions on the talks includes proposals to dismantle Canada’s successful dairy supply management program and eliminate restrictions on trade in GMOs and other agricultural biotechnology. “Under NAFTA and its forerunner, the CanadaUS FTA, farm input costs have gone up and inflation-adjusted commodity prices have dropped, yet the farmer’s share of the grocery dollar is smaller. We export more, but imports have increased faster, which means our share of our own domestic market is actually shrinking,” said Jan Slomp, President of Canada’s National Farmers Union. “NAFTA and the FTA have not helped farmers. Since 1988 we have seen one in every five of our farms disappear and we’ve lost over 70% of our young farmers, even though Canada’s population has increased.” “The USA cannot solve its dairy crisis by taking over the Canadian dairy

market and putting our farmers out of business,” said Slomp. “We need Canada to stand firm against any temptation to negotiate away supply management. Our system ensures farmers are paid the cost of production, processing plants are able to run at full capacity and consumers have a reliable, wholesome and affordable supply of dairy, poultry and eggs – all without any government subsidies.” Jim Goodman, a Wisconsin dairy farmer and member of the National Family Farm Coalition, agreed. “Federal and State Governments and Land Grant Universities, at the behest of the dairy industry, have done all they can to encourage U.S. dairy farmers to produce more milk, never questioning how much milk might be too much or how the subsequent cheap prices affect farmers. We cannot expect Canada, at the expense of their dairy farmers, to bail us out. Farmers - whether U.S. or Canadian - are nothing more than parts of the machine to the industry and NAFTA. That’s the way free trade works.” Ben Burkett, National Family Farm Coalition board president and Mississippi farmer, noted that simply increasing exports will not replace the need for fair prices. “U.S. family farmers and ranchers have demanded that the administration restores Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) for meat, which would provide more

accurate information to consumers while improving our access to markets.” Mexican family farmers, who have been devastated by NAFTA’s existing provisions that flooded their markets with cheap grains, will join thousands of labor, environmental and other activists in Mexico City tomorrow to denounce the talks and demand a completely different approach based on complementarity and cooperation. On agriculture, they insist that, “Mexico must guarantee food sovereignty and security and exclude basic grains, especially corn. Transgenic crops should be excluded and the ability of national states to promote sustainable agriculture intact. Likewise, Mexico must maintain its adhesion the UPOV [International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants] Act of 1978 and to reject the commitment to accede to the UPOV Act 1991, as it was intended in the TPP.” Victor Suarez, Executive Director of the Mexican National Association of Rural Producers (ANEC) added that, “This whole process should begin with a thorough, independent evaluation of NAFTA’s economic, social, environmental and governance impacts. The goal should be to restore national sovereignty over food and farm policy, and to support local farming communities.”

“For many years, Rural Coalition has advocated for a ‘people-to-peoples NAFTA’ linking rural communities in all three countries to collaborate to improve their local economies and food sovereignty. A renegotiation of NAFTA that further helps transnational corporations while diminishing community self-determination will only hasten rural economic collapse --exactly the wrong way to go,” said John Zippert, Rural Coalition Chairperson

and longtime Federation of Southern Cooperatives staff member in Alabama. “NAFTA has woven our economies together in ways that hurt family farmers, workers and our environments,” said Karen Hansen-Kuhn, Director of International Strategies at the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy. “We need a new approach to trade that promotes local and regional food systems, including providing for mechanisms in all three countries to

shelter food crops from volatile markets and dumping. Simplistic calls to expand exports won’t get us to the fair and sustainable food and farm system we need.” As an ongoing tool for understanding NAFTA, IATP has released a primer paper, NAFTA Renegotiation: What’s at stake for food, farmers and the land? as well as collecting 25 years’ worth of research in a NAFTA portal accessible at www.iatp. org/collection/nafta-portal.

Carrie Brownstein. Season eight’s new and returning guest stars include Rachel Bloom, John Corbett, Terry Crews, Jeff Goldblum, Rashida Jones, Kyle MacLachlan, John Mulaney, Nick Kroll, Krist

Novoselic and more. As you have discovered, viewers can catch up on seasons one through seven on Netflix and iTunes. Q: It’s nearly impossible to wade through all the home-improvement/ house-flipping shows on TV anymore. Can you tell me what the cast of the original fixer-upper show, “Trading Spaces,” is doing now? — Carolyn F., via Twitter A: You’ll be happy to know that the ol’ gang is getting back together! Rumors have been swirling for months that the show would be rebooted, and just a few weeks ago, those rumors proved to be true. TLC is bringing back

“Trading Spaces,” as well as several of its original designer experts, in spring 2018. Host Paige Davis was the first to come back aboard, with Doug Wilson, Carter Oosterhouse, Frank Bielec, Genevieve Gorder, Hildi Santo-Tomas, Laurie Smith, Ty Pennington and Vern Yip following suit. Q: I’m so happy that “Dancing With the Stars” has returned, but where is Julianne Hough? — Kaley F., Bentonville, Arkansas A: As of this writing, no official statement has been made about her departure from the show, only that the show was back to its “original three judges.” But never fear — once a member of the “DWTS”

family, always a member of the “DWTS” family. As we know, dancers come and go, and come back again (Julianne’s brother, Derek, being one such dancer) depending on their schedules, so I don’t see why it shouldn’t be the same for judges. Methinks the newlywed just wanted to spend time with her new hubby, NHL player Brooks Laich, whom she married in July. Julianne also recently launched her own line of workout gear, so at the moment, she’s got a lot on her plate. Q: When will all my CW superhero shows be back? — Kyle T., via email A: Practically just as soon as you can read

this paragraph, Kyle. “Supergirl” returns Monday, Oct. 9, at 8/7c (followed by the new military drama “Valor” at 9/8c). The next night, Tuesday, Oct. 10, brings us the return of “The Flash” at 8/7c, followed by “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow” at 9/8c. Oh, and in “Flash” casting news, feature-film actor Danny Trejo (“Machete,” “From Dusk Till Dawn”) joins the cast this season as Breacher, a scary bounty hunter from Earth-19, who is also Gypsy’s father. One of my summer’s “bests” has been a weekly bike ride to the new farmer’s market in our neigh-

borhood. There are so many things to like about the ritual — the anticipation of that first bite of a buttery fresh croissant from the baker, chitchatting with neighbors and sampling the colorful produce and products from local farmers. Now in late September, spring radishes have made way for squash, a clue that

rigatoni or ziti macaroni •2 tablespoons salad oil •1 small onion, chopped •1/3 cup all-purpose flour •1 quart milk •1/4 teaspoon salt •1/8 teaspoon white pepper •1/2 pound Fontina or mozzarella cheese, shredded •1 (10-ounce) package frozen peas •1/2 pound cooked ham, diced Preheat oven to 350 F. In saucepot, prepare rigatoni as label directs. Drain rigatoni; return to saucepot. Meanwhile, in 2-quart saucepan over medium heat, in hot salad oil, cook onion until tender but not browned. Stir in flour; cook 1 minute. With wire the growing season is coming to an end. But it doesn’t have to be, according to energetic Karla Pankow and Elizabeth Millard, owners of popular Bossy Acres farm and regulars at our market. These organic farmers encourage us to bring “the land” into our homes this fall, and “keep farming” with kids by planting windowsill gardens of low maintenance and fun-to-grow pea shoots. We’ve already taken the challenge at our house, and we’re enthused by the results of our edible garden. We enjoy the nutrientrich and tasty shoots in a tuna or egg sandwich for added crunch, in Asian stir-fries and as an artistic garnish on a cup of soup. Thanks to Elizabeth’s suggestion, I like to arrange a bed of shoots on a plate and set a fried egg on top. Here’s what you’ll need for a 6- by 8-inch garden: — A scant 1/4 cup dry pea seeds such as snow peas — 1 glass jar — 1 repurposed 6-inchby-8-inch plastic deli clamshell container with holes in the bottom or similar container that fits your windowsill. Make your own holes for drainage if necessary. — 1 drainage tray — Potting soil, preferably organic. — Water spritzer Here’s the fun: 1. Soak seeds in a jar filled with water for a day to help them germinate faster. 2. Let your kids scoop the potting soil into the container 2/3 full. Water until moist. Sprinkle the soaked peas evenly on the soil. Lightly cover with

whisk or fork, gradually stir in milk, salt and pepper until smooth; over high heat, heat to boiling, stirring constantly. Remove saucepan from heat; stir in half of cheese. Into rigatoni, stir cheese sauce, frozen peas and diced ham. Spoon rigatoni mixture into shallow 3-quart casserole or 13-by-9-inch glass baking dish. Top with remaining cheese. Bake rigatoni 25 to 30 minutes until mixture is hot and bubbly, and cheese melts and browns slightly. Makes 6 servings. • Each serving: About 725 calories, 29g fat, 89mg cholesterol, 980mg sodium. more soil and spritz with water. 3. Place in a warm room covered with a kitchen towel. Water now and then to keep soil moist. Avoid overwatering to prevent mold. 4. Watch for sprouts to appear within 2-3 days. Remove cover and place in a sunny window. The sprouts might look yellow initially, but turn green and grow quickly in the sunshine. The greenery eventually will fill the container, spill out and flourish. Water regularly. 5. Harvest pea shoots as needed when they are 4-6 inches long. To encourage new growth, clip them near the base of a stem above a leaf. Grow this lovely garden for another three weeks or so. When it is finished, discard soil and start a new crop.
