Mayor’s message ...

Remember obligations from our past

Province celebrates Saskatchewan’s 100th anniversary celebration in Yorkton, Sept. 4, 2000.

As Canada Day approaches there is turmoil around the world. Having recently returned from the United Kingdom after the Manchester bombing you can’t help but reflect on what drives people to such desperate acts. It also stirs thoughts of patriotism and what it means to be a Canadian. We are a nation that stand for the rule of law. We hold ourselves to high standards and expect others to do the same. We are often disappointed. Having glimpsed Hadrian’s Wall and the many castles and landmarks across Britain, Ireland and Scotland you begin to understand clearly how young a nation we are. Having visited sites built in the 1600’s you can’t help but compare our 150 years to that. We were cobbled together by people from many countries and I often feel that our greatest strength is the divers-

Mayor Bob Maloney ity of our citizens and the strength of their character. Canadians are here because their ancestors wanted to be here or they have come as immigrants to seek a better life. Are we proud? All that, and perhaps a bit smug about our success and potential for the next 100 years. We have so much to be thankful for and so many to thank for the freedoms and rights we enjoy. While 150 years is a fleeting passage of

time on the world stage it does highlight just how much we have been able to accomplish in that time. We have forged a nation based on principles of dignity and respect that many view as the best place in the world to live. We enjoy clean air and a healthy environment because we have made it that way. Clearly being Canadian implies a lot. Hard work, virtue and a realistic approach to what we can get done. Nations are built of people. Our red maple leaf commands respect that has been hard earned, and offers hope in a world where hope can be hard to come by. As we celebrate this important birthday of our nation lets remember those who came before us and the obligation we have to make our communities, provinces and country a better more tolerant place.

With 1,400 persons crowding into the gym at thr Regional High for last Sunday’s Interfaith service, citizens of Yorkton have already shown that the events planned for this week will be well attended, and that the festive occasion of the Confederation will be well celebrated. And there will be many occasions for doing just that during the rest of the week. The Canadian Armed Forces Motorcycle Display Team will perform tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Jubilee Park. These riders will give a demonstration of more than 40 tricks and

precision riding skills, including ramp jumps through rings of flames and crashes through walls.

Free show

The show is free to all those who wish to attend. The team was in Canora Monday, in Melville Tuesday, and will travel to Flin Flon and The Pas after the Yorkton show. The program lasts about an hour. A short period of this length is taken up by a brief safety demonstration on proper dress, equipment, and riding manners. It is also stressed that young cyclists do not try

to duplicate tricks, since they require extensive training and top physical condition. A street dance will be held Friday night on First Ave. between Broadway and Smith St. Two bands will be in attendance.

Midnight Celebration

Midnight Friday will hear the official ringing in of the second century of Confederation. Also at midnight, the permanent flame will be lit in the new fountain now under construction at Broadway opposite Second Ave.

Saturday morning a citizen’s parade will proceed from the Old Collegiate to Century Field at 11 a.m. At noon, the 53rd Field Regiment will fire a hundredgun salute, one of only three to be fired in Saskatchewan. General Alexander Ross will perform at the inspection of the Regiment at 12:30 p.m. Century Field will be officially opened by Mayor Fichtner at 1:15 p.m.

Rain dampens inauguration ceremonies ... Century Field, with facilities for every track and field sport, should be a great incentive to young sportsmen, Duvy Lang said Saturday in accepting the city’s centenniel project on behalf of the young people of Yorkton. He recalled that school gridders in previous years had to fall on hard rocks at the YCI field, so the grass at

Century Field should be a great improvement. In a rain-soaked ceremony witnessed by 400 persons, Mayor Fitchner opened the field, which has a quarter-mile track with six lanes, a sprint track with eight lanes, a regulation size football field, and facilities for all field sports. Spectators will view the field from a 900-seat concrete grandstand.

Mayor Fichtner fired a start’s pistol, the signal for Len Bode and Sherril Roberts to run down the track and break the ribbon marking the official opening. The Unit Band was in attendance, and Rev. F. Reed pronounced the invocation.

Platform Guests

Keith Harper, chairman of the memorial

committee of the Citizen’s Centennial Committee, was master of ceremonies. On the platform with him were Mayor Fichtner, Alderman Bill Johnston, O. Fietz, Allan Bailey and Bill Prystai, Centennial Committee members W. Blommaert, J. Lenius, H. Beauregard, N. Roebuck, W. Winnitowy, S. Trenholm, and Dr. Stephanie Potoski,

General A. Ross, Lt. Col. T. G. K. Hegan, Col. Manse Powell, Inspector Forward, Rev. Reed and Duvy Lang. A few hours earlier, a citizens’ parade marched from the junior high to the field.

Walking in the rain

The turnout of participants and spectators was cut by shower both before and during the

parade. Taking part in the parade were the Air Cadet Pipe Band, Sea Cadet Drum and Bugle Band from Saskatoon, Unit Band, Navy Cadets, public schools, minor sports organizations, Legion, Army, Navy, and Air Force and their auxiliaries, Boy Scouts, Girl Guides, Job’s Daughters, and citizens in native costume.

A growing nation

Band Week Parkland Mall

Frank Sinatra Show Band.

As the Member of the Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly for Yorkton, it is an honour to be serving during Canada’s 150th Birthday Celebration. Our nation can be defined by entities, people and moments. Some of the defining moments came during military conflicts but many significant endings came about during times of peace, because of necessity and only due to people’s tenacious efforts. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police, who defend the law, and the iconic Snowbirds, the warriors of the air, are synonymous to Canada. These distinctively Canadian forces are comprised of men and women who represent justice and peace. As well, a particular sense of pride resonates among us because both have their homes in Saskatchewan. We can look to Canadians, such as Sylvia Fedoruk, George Klein, Dr. Frederick Banting and Terry Fox, who must be recognized as heroes for their many contributions to the betterment of humanity. The Canadarm distinguished Canada’s Space Agency technologically. The creation of Trivial Pursuit and events such as the 1972 Summit Series of Hockey, made an impact like none other on Canada’s entertainment and sporting circles and the development of Canola changed food for consumers worldwide. In the late nineteenth century immigration brought together cultures which distinctively established Canada as a model nation. The inclusiveness of cultures, especially for people living on the prairies, causes us to be like no other population of people anywhere on earth. Our province’s motto

“From many peoples’ strength” helps to explain our recent decade long ascent in the Confederation. The pioneer values took root in our culture over a century ago and continue to influence and contribute to who we are today. Together we can endeavour to recognize the diversity of stories that brought us to today. As our province grows, so too our nation continues to be built. There are a multitude of Saskatchewan resources which contribute to making Canada a world leader in energy, mining, manufacturing and agriculture. Although Saskatchewan has become a hub of an exports based economy, I personally recognize that the foundation for much of this is our agriculture based economy. This past spring a $100M expansion to Grain Miller’s in Yorkton was the latest announcement but the contributions of TA Foods, LDC and Richardson make east central Saskatchewan a destination for prairie grains and oilseeds. On this date celebrating 150 years since Confederation, I close with a quote from Saskatchewan born Prime Minister Diefenbaker, “I am a Canadian; A free Canadian; Free to speak without fear; Free to worship God in my own way; Free to stand for what I think right; Free to oppose what I believe wrong; Free to choose those who shall govern my country. This heritage of freedom, I pledge to uphold for myself and all mankind” God Bless Canada! Greg Ottenbreit, Member of the Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly Yorkton Constituency

Happy Birthday CANADA MP’s message ...

Stand up for true freedoms of our nation On July 1, Canada will celebrate a really big birthday - 150 years since we were born as a nation. All Canada’s anniversary celebrations bring recollections of the people who contributed to our nation in significant ways. Those who, by small acts and large, laid a solid foundation and forged a strong network of roots. I like to think that those roots are especially deep in the prairie heart of Canada, where we have room to grow, creative hands and caring hearts. Queen Elizabeth, speaking on Parliament

Hill during Canada’s 123rd birthday celebrations, said, “Canada is a country that has been blessed beyond most countries in the world. It is a country worth working for.” Indeed. All these years after Confederation, we are one of the richest, most envied nations in the world. If given a choice, statistics reveal that people from almost any other country you could name, would choose Canada as their new or second home. Canada’s 13th Prime Minister, John Diefenbaker, said,

“There can be no dedication to Canada’s future without a knowledge of its past.” As a country, we are what we are today because of who we have been in the past. The people who long ago shaped us, lived and died to protect us, did so to establish and protect those things that have united us and now identify us as a nation respected around the world. Prime Minister Diefenbaker also made this remarkable statement: “I am a Canadian, free to speak without

fear, free to worship in my own way, free to stand for what I think right, free to oppose what I believe wrong, and free to choose those who shall govern my country. This heritage of freedom I pledge to uphold for myself and all mankind.” If our nation could speak on her 150th birthday, I think she would encourage us to be united in our resolve to stand up and speak up in defense of those freedoms that have enabled her to remain for the past century and a half, strong and healthy, generous and welcoming.

What Canada means to me... St. Pauls Grade 8 students

Canada means everything to me. Canada to me is a place to feel and be safe, it’s a place where you can go and be treated equally. Canada is a place where you can feel safe wherever you go and have absolutely no worries of war in Canada. Canada is where you can be who you want to be and not be disowned for it, it’s a place where you can walk on the side walk and not have to watch out for bomb shells, or shards of glass from a collapsed buildings. Canada is my home. By: Alyssa Popowich ★★★ To me, Canada is the one place I can be proud of who I am. Canada has the Charter of Rights

which allows me to truly be free. I can express myself however I want, whether that be through fashion, or my opinions. It allows me to truly live. Canada will always be my true home, no matter how much I travel. I will always return, because Canada is the one place where I know I won’t be judged. By: Hayley Jayde Polachek ★★★ Canada means home to me. The definition of home is the place where one lives permanently, especially as a member of a family or household. I live in Canada and I have for my entire life. Living in Canada you also feel like part of a family, because your family loves you no matter what.

Everyone in Canada is accepting and won’t judge you. In Canada everyone belongs, we accept everyone and it shows because we are so culturally and ethnically diverse. We are all bound in a sort of way, we all have a connection; we are all Canada. By: Eric McAllister ★★★ Canada is a place of safety; Canada is somewhere you can be yourself. You may think “Isn’t a school somewhere you can be yourself?” Or something along those lines, but the thing is it isn’t just certain places you can be safe and yourself it’s all of Canada. Canada is a Place where people can feel like they belong. When you are

having troubles at school maybe you think you don’t belong in the community, but do you ever think you don’t belong in Canada? Most likely not because everyone knows in there heart that they belong. Canada is also a place where people come to live. “Why?” you may ask. Because Canada has so many great characteristics and such little bad ones. So that is what Canada means to me personally. What Canada means to me... Parkland_College_6x32.g21_R0011431665.indd/prod3dm f/cYTW june 28/17/ sandy St. Pauls Grade 8 students

Canada means to me my home when I come back from vacations, it my safe place. It is born with humble, loving, caring people that accept anyone it doesn’t matter what I do in life they will accept me for who I am. Canada is a place where we can adventure and experience a life full of fun and laughter. Canada means to me a place where you can be you. Caitlin Cmoc ★★★ Canada was a mere 104 years old when I was born! Living here for the past 46 years has allowed me to grow into the person that I am today. Canada places a huge value on the importance of family. My wife and I truly appreciate the opportunities that are available to us, and to our children. As an elementary school principal, living in a country in which education is a priority is a blessing. Living in Canada allows me to practice my faith without fear of persecution. And, as a citizen living in a free, democratic country, I am allowed to vote for whomever I believe will represent my interests in government. (In fact, some of my fellow citizens even voted for me this year!) I am truly blessed to live in the greatest country in the world. Happy birthday Canada! Quinn Haider ★★★ Canada is my home. Canada is where all of my friends are at. When I think Canada I think freedom and peace. Canada is special in its own way, it has lots of wonderful people. When somebody says “Canada” I think winter and snow. Canada is where my family is at. Canada is my life and my adventure. In Canada you can have lots of fun and way more. If you ever need a getaway trip my suggestion would be here in Canada. To me Canada is a place of wonders and adventures. Canada is where I live where my family and friends are at and where I call home. By Phoenix Durdin ★★★

To me Canada means that we are a safe and powerful country. We welcome each other into each other’s lives and make sure everybody’s involved. Our government is strong and powerful. Our government is a democracy. Everybody gets a say on who the leader is in are country. Canada is peaceful. We have are nice green forest and White Mountains. We have a bunch of nature to watch on our hikes. We have beautiful lakes to go fishing on. Many people leave their countries to come to Canada because they know they will have a safe future here in Canada. To me Canada is mighty, safe, powerful, and beautiful. Canada is home. Sincerely, Josh Herzog ★★★ When I think of Canada it means that a place that could be trusted, peaceful, chilly, people of unique culture, sports, and freedom. Canada is unique from any country in the world due to the divers land forms and cultures shared under one roof, for myself I am a proud Canadian since I came from a different part of the world seeing Canada and it wonders shaped my life telling me anything is possible. I feel that Canada is more of a wall of spirit that can’t be broken down by anything, each and every one can make Canada a better place. By: Dave Tarongoy ★★★ Canada is home. It’s where people can feel like they belong. It offers safety to families who need to escape something. To me Canada is a place that people can achieve whatever they are set to do. I know that some people as well as myself have rights they wouldn’t have any place else. People in Canada try so hard to ensure safety to families throughout the country. That’s why so many people want to call Canada home. People are so friendly and want to make you happy and enjoy being here. Canada makes it easy to do what you want, the opportunities are endless. It’s the

only place I’ve ever lived and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. By Rebecca Walsh ★★★ For me Canada means freedom. We have a safe and secure environment. People are open to their own rights, but also are entitled to their responsibilities. Our government is a democracy, making us a democratic society, so we have a say on whom we want as our leaders. The people that move here come and they feel excepted and proud to be a Canadian. Many people come to Canada as a safe place and so that they can have peace in their own lives. To me Canada means memories and futures, good times and even some bad times, but for me Canada especially means home. Sincerely, Jackson Long ★★★ When I think of Canada I think of so much. I think of peace, frostiness, people, freedom and sports. Canada is so much more than a country, it is a place of loving people and a place you can be yourself. Canada is my homeland, my existence, my family. Canada is the place I have lived and will live on forever. People don’t comprehend how much one word can mean, when you say Canada you are saying much more then Canada. When I say Canada, I am telling you my home, my life, my drive, a place where I can belong and a home I can grow in. By: Ethan Kamieniecki

and people love it here. Canada is a place where I can belong because everyone belongs in Canada. By Emma Griffith ★★★ Canada means a lot of things to me like, home, family, a place where I live, and where I go to school. Canada is home to me and other people, because we live here, we grew up here, and we also made friends in Canada. Canada is a place where people can be free and be who they are, it’s also a place where we can talk about anything and talk to anyone. Canada means that we have education, free health care, and a lot of good things that third world countries don’t have. Canada is part of our family and we should be glad that we can celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday this year. By: Aslin Desroches ★★★ To me, Canada means all of our country is safe. We can go to the park and have fun because we are kids. Not worry about who’s going to be outside or what will happen if we go too far. Canada means that we are protected. People are always going to be protecting us. And Canadians take pride in

the things they do. That’s why we are such a successful country. Even if you don’t live in Canada, you know how it is such a great place to be. You feel like you’re always welcome wherever you go. Now I’m not saying Canada is 100% perfect. Sure it has the ups and downs, everything in life does. But I will never be ashamed to say that I am a Canadian citizen. By: Alex Hodgson ★★★ Canada is so much more than just the place that I survive in; it is where my heart is. Just because I was born in Canada does not mean that it is a great place to be right away. I am so fortunate to live here in Canada, since all of the best people I know live here. All of my friends and family are gifts here in Canada, but strangers here are also extremely nice as well. Canada is where my heart is, no matter where my future takes me. When you say “Canada” I hear “Home.” By: Marisa Chyz ★★★ Canada means a lot to me, it’s my home after all, but I will tell you a few things it means to me. Canada is a place I can call home, I will say “I

would like to go home, where I can love, laugh and live comfortably”. Canada means freedom, heart and Canada means pride! Canada is the home to pretty much every single culture, Canada means so much to every culture. Canada to me, means love compassion and I am proud to be Canadian. Canada means so much it’s more than just a country, Canada is our Mom, Dad, Brother and Sister, Canada is our home, Canada is our family. We are Canada! By: Michael Wesa ★★★

Canada means lots of things to me. Canada is a place where I can feel safe going to school, traveling etc. Canada is a home to me and other people in the country. Canada means that we have a peaceful country where there are no worries for war. Canada is a place to me where I know that anyone can come to live. It means to me that I have a place to call home and say that it is family. You can see how people in Canada came together has a family when a disasters strike. Canada is a home and a family to me. That is what Canada means to me. By: Christina

Happy Birthday

★★★ To me Canada means home. Canada is the place where I was born, met so many people to guide me , and the most important thing is that I made friends that shaped me and made me a part of their lives. Canada is the place where I met everyone that made my life special and made me feel loved and wanted. Canada means a place where you can feel safe because so many people are welcoming. Canada has so many different cultures involved because Canada is a free country
