PORTER - With sadness, the family of Carolyn (Carol) Eileen Porter announce her sudden passing on Friday, June 30, 2017. She was 58 years of age. Carolyn was born on January 19, 1959 in Saltcoats, SK the seventh of eight children born to Lorne and June (nee Howie) Porter. The family lived in Saltcoats for a short time before moving to Snow Lake, MB where Carolyn received most of her education. They moved back to Saltcoats years later where Carolyn lived until her passing. Carolyn enjoyed participating in many different activities, but in her younger years she loved to curl. She had many talents including knitting, crocheting and sewing, making a variety of different things for the family. She always said, “You bring me a ball of wool or a pattern and I’ll make it for you”. She loved talking on the phone and catching up with people. Spending many hours on the phone she’d always leave off by saying “I’ll talk to you later” which wouldn’t be long at all. She loved her family and friends and, as much as she could, she would always put them first. Carolyn was predeceased by her parents, Lorne and June Porter; her sister, Gloria Smith; her brothers, John Porter and Jim Porter and her niece, Kim Tarasoff along with numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Carolyn is survived by her son, Curtis Berard and daughter, Diana Berard both of Yorkton, SK; her sisters, Diane (Bob) LaVallee of Yorkton, SK and Lorna (Jim) Ward of Saltcoats, SK; her brothers, Stan Porter of Saskatoon, SK and Harvey (Paulette) Porter of Yellowknife, NWT; 16 nieces and nephews, 10 greatnieces and nephews and most recently, one great-great-nephew as well as her aunts, cousins and many friends. Funeral Services were held on Friday, July 7, 2017 from Saltcoats United Church in Saltcoats, SK with Fred Nicholson officiating. The organist, Carla Laycock, led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, “Amazing Grace” and “The Old Rugged Cross”. The urn bearer was Carolyn’s son, Curtis Berard. A private family cremation committal will take place at a later date. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan. MCKEN - Jean McKen was born June 18, 1929 at Yorkton, SK. She was the daughter of David and AnnaBelle (nee McLachlan) McVey. She was raised on the family farm north west of Yorkton and attended Reaman School and Orkney School. She completed her high school education by correspondence at Orcadia. On June 30, 1947 she was united in marriage to Maurice McKen at St. Andrew’s United Church, Yorkton. Son, Don and daughter, Maureen were born in 1949 and 1952 respectively. The couple farmed in the Orcadia District all their lives. In those early years they worked hard to establish their farm essentially from scratch. There was always lots of work but not very much money. Jean found many ways to deal with the situation. In the 1950’s, Siwash sweaters were very popular. Many American duck hunters ordered these made-to-fit sweaters from her. She was a fast knitter and would often work throughout the night to finish a sweater for the next day. From her knitting she made enough money to purchase 5 heifers, significantly contributing to their start-up cattle herd. She assisted in the milking of the cows, morning and evening, from spring to fall. In addition, she also assisted in the raising of chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks and pigs. Cream and eggs were taken to the train station at Orcadia and sent to Yorkton for sale. Very often the only income available was the meager proceeds from these sales. Another source of income that Jean participated in was trapping. Maurice often operated a winter trap line and trapped primarily muskrats. Jean helped with the skinning and Maurice claims she could skin 3 to 1 of his. She also cooked meals for the municipal road building crew working in the area one season. She always grew a large garden and harvested wild berries. She preserved more than enough for the season------initially by canning and when electricity made it to the area by freezing. Above all, she was very thrifty and refused to spend money if there was any possible way to avoid it. She often made clothing from cast off garments and flour sacks and was recycling long before it was the fashionable thing to do. Although Jean left the decisions of farming to Maurice, she was still very much involved in farm operations. She prepared meals for the threshing crew and did the evening farm chores. When the threshing machine was replaced by a small combine she often hauled grain from the field - - - 25 bushels at a time. During haying she frequently operated the tractor to rake hay into windrows and coils. In more recent times, she continued to display her progressive attitude. She supported her son and daughter-in-law’s start-up game farm by purchasing and contributing three elk heifers. She named them Faith, Hope and Charity. Furthermore, she was a strong supporter of Don and “B’s” certified organic grain farming. When Don and Maureen left to further their education, Jean began 25 years of employment. She worked at the Anderson Lodge as a cook for 10 years, at the Yorkton Union Hospital for 6 years and finally at the Yorkton District Nursing Home for 9 years. Early on she studied the necessary material on her own and passed the provincial journeyman’s cook exam. Throughout her lifetime, Jean was interested in and became very committed to the growth and development of her immediate communities of Orcadia and Yorkton. As a result, she was actively involved in many capacities of various organizations. She was a member of the Western Development Museum Steering Committee, a director of the East Zone Seniors, a member and past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star, committee member and ladies auxiliary member of Westview United Church, Orkney United Church, Orcadia Community Club and the Creekside Ladies of Theodore. Her compassion for others extended in and beyond her community. Frequently, she and Maurice would visit folks at the nursing home and the hospital. Also, they took great pride in sponsoring a child through World Vision for over a decade. Jean took pride in her yard. She spent countless hours over the years building rock gardens, planting and tending to annual and perennial flowers, fruit trees and shelterbelts. Jean’s favourite pastime activities centered around various handicrafts such as knitting, crocheting, dried floral arrangements and sewing. She rarely purchased any raw materials other than glue for her glue gun. She had a unique ability to turn recycled yarn, cattails, stalks of wheat, cores from toilet paper rolls, pine cones etc. into a host of very attractive and decorative products. She was a regular participant in various craft sales, community shows, exhibitions and workshops. Her output was quite spectacular, her prices were low, demand was high and she was able to sell all that she produced. She donated every penny to various charitable causes. Predeceased by her parents, brother, Frank McVey and sister, Ellen Shaver. Jean leaves to mourn her passing, her husband Maurice, son, Don (Bilkies) McKen, of Orcadia, SK., daughter, Maureen (Larry) Galye, of St. Albert, AB.; grandchildren Jason McKen, Andrea McKen (husband Dave Clarke), Clayton (Jenn) Galye, Jocelyn (Marcus) Wolf; great-grandchildren, Kieran Clarke, Emerson and Grayson Galye, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends and neighbours. Jean is dearly missed and will be lovingly remembered. The funeral service was held on Tuesday, July 4, 2017 from Westview United Church in Yorkton with Rev. Deborah Smith officiating. The family tribute was given by Jason & Andrea McKen. Organist, Laurene Jemieff led the congregation in the hymns Amazing Grace, How Great Thou Art, Abide With Me and Beyond the Sunset. The interment took place in the Garden of Memories at the Yorkton Memorial Gardens with son Don and daughter Maureen serving as the urn bearers. Condolences can be left at baileysfuneralhome.com. Memorials were to the Yorkton & District Nursing Home or to the Cardiac Care Unit of the YRHC.

BLOMMAERT - Mrs. Leah Blommaert of Yorkton, SK, widow of the late Wilfred Blommaert, passed away peacefully at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre on June 24, 2017. Leah was born in Rhein, SK on April 23, 1921, the daughter of Fred Beitz, Sr. and Katherine Elizabeth Beitz (Lenning), who settled in Rhein from Russia in 1912. Leah was the youngest of seven children, four boys and three girls. She received all of her education at the Rhein School, finishing in 1938. In 1944, Leah moved to Yorkton with her family and went to work for the Victoria General Hospital as a nurse’s aide until 1947. During that time she met Wilfred Blommaert and was married on November 14, 1946, at which time they moved to the family farm just east of Yorkton. Leah greatly enjoyed life. She worked tirelessly beside Wilfred to help make the farm a success and provide for their three children. She also kept a large number of laying hens. She would sell eggs to the hatchery in Yorkton and would sell cream to the creamery in Yorkton to help provide for the family. Leah loved to bake and cook. She also loved company, which would bring out the host in her with a bottomless coffee mug and all of the baking one could possibly eat. After someone came into the house and settled, Leah would ask if they wanted something to drink and if they had eaten. If they answered they had not eaten, a full meal would be prepared no matter what time of the day and then she would apologize saying “sorry that there couldn’t be more”. If a guest said that he or she was not hungry, Leah would say, “You cannot go without eating”. If they didn’t have at least a cup of coffee and a cookie, she would be disappointed. Leah was known in the community for her wonderful cooking. There were a few friends that always came at lunchtime, knowing the extent of Leah’s hospitality. She would sometimes grumble about that, but always put on a smile and fed them more than they could eat. If you ever left Leah’s house hungry or thirsty, it was your own fault! Leah was predeceased by her husband, Wilfred (2006) and her daughters, Sandra Lynn (2012) and Dianna Carol (2015). She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her son, Wayne Archie (Chantal) and granddaughter, Stephanie (Cody) Korpan, as well as many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services were held on Wednesday, July 5, 2017 from First Baptist Church in Yorkton, SK with Pastor Steve Rosluk officiating. The organist, Carla Laycock, led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, “Just a Closer Walk With Thee”, “Victory in Jesus” and “Beyond the Sunset”. The Cremation Committal followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Leah’s son, Wayne serving as the urn bearer. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

LAFONTAINE - Mr. John LaFontaine of Yorkton, beloved husband of the late Lucy LaFontaine, passed away on June 29, 2017 at his home. John Robert LaFontaine was born on April 12, 1922 at Crescent Lake, SK, the son of Louis and Sarah LaFontaine. His father passed away in a tragic accident just prior to his birth. John’s mother remarried and he soon became a part of a blended family. John was a good man. He worked hard and he loved his family. He had his faults but they were few and he has lived a life that gave pleasure to the Lord. John never had a formal education. He started working for local farmers when he was twelve years old. He was well respected for his knowledge of farming and for his willingness to work hard. He worked for a number of years for Jake Loewan and became great friends with his son Gerald as well as a number of local farmers. In 1954 John fell in love with Lucy Mary St. Pierre. They married December 29, 1954 and raised eleven (11) children and three grandchildren Lyndsay, Ryan and Jerrett. John loved his children and grandchildren. John and Lucy were married for 56 years before her passing from an extended illness on March 22, 2011. John’s love for his wife endured. He would go to the graveyard every day to clean the graves of his wife and his daughter Holly. His needs were simple. His love of family was strong. John loved the outdoors. He trapped muskrats and mink well into his seventies and he and his friend Walter Pelletier were doing fencing when he was in his eighties. John and Walter spent many hours exploring the fields and old homesteads out at Crescent Lake and surrounding area. He liked to say he was going out to visit Bob Winters. John was especially close to his brothers Norman and Gilbert and sisters Agnes and Marie. Gilbert passed away in Regina many years ago but his older brother Norman would visit often, always with a story or pulling a prank on his younger brother. John maintained close family relations with his brothers Alex Boyer and Pete LaFontaine from Turtle Mountain who he would visit from time to time and his brothers and sisters; Wilfred Flamont, Violet Flamont, Rose LeDoux, Isabelle Pelletier, Elizabeth Hydamacka, Sarah Desjarlais, Gina Strulow and Lawrence Flamont. He enjoyed spending time with his family or calling to catch up on family news. John was the last surviving member of his large extended family. He was a man of character whose love for his wife gave his family strength and stability through the years. He took great comfort knowing that his wife and daughter are celebrating in heaven and it gives us great comfort to know that he joins them there now. He was very proud of the accomplishments of his wife, his children and his grandchildren. Because he never had the opportunity to get an education his goal was for his family to be educated. His desire for education can be measured by the number of diplomas hanging on the wall of his living room. Diplomas that celebrate the achievements of his children and grandchildren include degrees and journeyman trades: education, administration, business, medical doctor, lawyer, nurses’s aides, plumber, electrician, carpenter, cement finisher and professional truck driver. He is predeceased by his wife, his parents, Louis and Sarah, all his siblings, his daughter Holly and his grandson Michael. John leaves to celebrate his life his children, Vaughn LaFontaine, Patricia Bigstone, Robert and Sandra LaFontaine, Lynn and Martin Macleod, Clara LaFontaine and Bob Brazeau, Sandra Lerat, Mona LaFontaine, Mae and Ivan Cote, Milton LaFontaine, Nicole LaFontaine and Calvin Brass and 23 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 4 greatgreat-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, friends and family. Hebrews 6:15 (KJV)15 And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise. Prayers were held on Monday, July 3, 2017 and the Funeral Mass on Tuesday, July 4, 2017 at St. Gerard’s Roman Catholic Church in Yorkton with Rev. Father Francis Hengen as the Celebrant. Accompanist’s were Lorraine Lysak (Vigil) and Jayne Senger (Mass). Members of St. Gerard’s Choir led in the singing of the hymns, Amazing Grace, Psalm 62, Precious Lord Take My Hand, Morning Has Broken, Song of the Angels and How Great Thou Art. Michelle Kennedy paid tribute to Grandpa following the Vigil. The cross bearers were Myles Pelletier and Gerard St. Pierre. The readers were Lynn and Martin Macleod, Michelle, Kendon, Travis and Tashina Kennedy. Serving as gift bearers were Travis Kennedy & Vanessa Brass. Named as honourary bearers were Bruce White, Barry Pelletier, Myles Pelletier, Barry Kennedy, Walter Pelletier and Calvin Brass. The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Ryan LaFontaine, Jerrett LaFontaine, Jon LaFontaine, Jordan Brass, Daniel Pelletier, Ivan Cote Jr., Gordon LaFontaine and Patrick LaFontaine serving as the casket bearers. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.baileysfuneralhome.com.

KUCHER - Nick Kucher, husband of Eugenia of Yorkton, passed away on Tuesday, July 4, 2017 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. He was 78 years of age. Nick passed away after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He was born to Alex and Mary Kucher on the family farm located between Colonsay and Viscount on February 3, 1939. The family later moved to a farm in the Insinger area which was where he grew up. He attended Aysgarth School and then left to begin work for the CP Railway crew, using some of his first earnings to buy his family a tractor for the farm. A few years later, he began working construction in Saskatoon and continued on in this industry eventually becoming a general contractor in Yorkton. Though he left home young, Nick regularly returned to Insinger to visit friends and family. It is there that he met Eugenia (Jeany) and on July 26, 1969 they were married. Nick and Jeany raised their two children, Trent and Tara, in Yorkton, in the house he built. Many visitors passed through that house - family and friends - and very few left without having a drink or two, or three and perhaps just as many card games. Nick enjoyed sports. He played fastball for a number of years with the Insinger Cardinals and coached Trent’s little league baseball teams. He also very much enjoyed spending time in nature - hunting, fishing and picking mushrooms. Watching sports also provided him a lot of enjoyment (and frustration). Nick will be dearly missed by his friends and family. He is survived by his wife Jeany of more than 47 years, son Trent of Peoria, Illinois, daughter Tara of Regina and sister Edith of Yorkton. He is predeceased by his parents Alex and Mary Kucher, brother Peter (Mabel) Kucher, sisters Mary (Alfred) Wilke and Sophie (George) Choboter and brother-in-law Mike Kreklewetz. Prayers were held on Sunday evening, July 9, 2017 from Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The funeral service was held on Monday, July 10, 2017 from Holy Transfiguration Church with Very Rev. Mel Slashinsky as Celebrant. The cross bearer was Terry Hutzul. Cantor, Yvonne Panchuk, assisted by members of the Parish Choir, led in the singing of the responses. Honourary bearers were Ken Dorush, Maurice Kostichuk, Elgin McLelland and Albert Pobereznek. The interment took place in the Garden of St. Luke at the Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Jerry Essar, Bernie Fisher, Conrad Hnatiuk, Ryan Hutzul, Peter Moroz and Roman Wilgosh serving as the casket bearers. In Memoriam

Home Care Wanted

STRICKER - Remembering the best Dad and Grandpa, John Stricker. June 28, 1927 - July 13, 2015. God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be. So He put His arms around you and He whispered “Come to Me” With tearful eyes we watched you. We watched you fade away. Although we loved you dearly, We could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, Hard-working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He chose to take the best. It’s lonesome here without you we miss you more each day. Life doesn’t seem the same since you have gone away. When days are sad and lonely and everything goes wrong, we seem to hear you whisper “Cheer Up and Carry On”. Each time we see your picture you seem to smile and say, “Don’t cry, I’m in God’s hands, we’ll meet again someday!” -Missing you more than words can say: Clarinda, Mervin & family.

PLAN OF THE WEEK

PLAN NUMBER 1-3658 OPEN-PLAN LIVING AREA At the heart of this three-bedroom family home is an open-plan living area, including a great room with a gas fireplace and access to a deck, part of it covered. Both the living area and the bedrooms are on one floor, with an unfinished basement included in the plans for future use as bedrooms or a mort-

gage-helping suite. Entry is through a covered walkway and porch into a foyer with a coat closet to the left. Also on the left is a den or third bedroom, overlooking the front veranda. The great room, dining area and kitchen are located directly ahead. The kitchen features a sky-light over the main working space, with a corner pantry and a raised eating bar with three seats. The stair-

way down to the basement is located nearby. The master suite, which looks out to the back garden, has an extra-wide window sill that could double as a window-seat. The ensuite, with a linen closet adjacent, includes double sinks and a soaker tub with a tiled surround, as well as a show stall. The walk-in closet will be spacious enough for any couple’s clothing and accessories.

A second linen closet is located just outside the second bedroom, which shares a threepiece bathroom with the third bedroom. The laundry room includes a tub and will also serve as a mudroom, thanks to access to the double garage. Exterior finishes include horizontal siding with wooden shingle accents in the gables, and a decorative garage door. Wooden pilasters feature brick bases and woodwork is painted. This home measures 39 feet wide and 64 feet deep, for a total of 1,490 square feet. Plans for design 1-3658 are available for $675 (set of 5), $730 (set of 8) and $774 for a super set of 10. B.C. residents add 7% Prov. Sales Tax. Also add $35.00 for Priority courier charges within B.C. or $65.00 outside of B.C. Please add 5% G.S.T. or 13% H.S.T. (where applicable) to both the plan price and postage charges. Our NEW 49TH Edition of the Home Plan Catalogue containing over 400 plans is available for $15.50 (includes taxes, postage and handling). Haying is progressing in the province as livestock producers now have 19 per cent of the hay crop cut and 10 per cent baled or put into silage, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report. Hay quality is rated as eight per cent excellent, 54 per cent good, 29 per cent fair and nine per cent poor. Pasture conditions are rated as six per cent excellent, 38 per cent good, 41 per cent fair, 13 per cent poor and two per cent very poor. The majority of the province received very little rain this past week, ranging from negligible amounts in most areas to 78 mm in the Nipawin area. Many areas remain dry and producers are hoping for rainfall to boost crop development and hay and pasture

growth. Across the province, topsoil moisture on cropland is rated as five per cent surplus, 49 per cent adequate, 37 per cent short and nine per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as five per cent surplus, 40 per cent adequate, 38 per cent short and 17 per cent very short. Overall, crops are at their normal stages of development for this time of year; however, there are some crops that are behind due to moisture issues. Twenty-six per cent of fall cereals are in the dough stage while nine per cent of spring cereals are in the heading stage. Two per cent of flax, 30 per cent of canola and mustard and 37 per cent of pulse crops are flowering.

Producers are wrapping up in-crop herbicide applications in most areas and starting to apply fungicides. While dry conditions are causing crop stress in most areas, particularly in the south, some areas in the north have issues with wet conditions. Crop damage this week was attributed to dry conditions, wind, insects, localized flooding and hail. Producers are busy haying, scouting for disease and insects, hauling grain, fencing and repairing equipment. SaskPower received eight reports of farm equipment coming in contact with power lines this week, bringing the total for June to 37. One hundred and seventy-six incidents have occurred so far in 2017. A complete report is available online at h t t p : / / w w w. p u b l i c a tions.gov.sk.ca/redirect. cfm?p=86273&i=99838. Follow the 2017 Crop Report on Twitter at @ SKAgriculture.

Rate increase

S a s k E n e r g y has applied to the Saskatchewan Rate Review Panel for a Delivery Service Rate increase to support continued elevated capital spending on system safety and customer growth initiatives totalling more than $50 million in 2017/18. If approved, a typical residential customer would see an increase of $1.65/month – 2.3 per cent of their total bill – effective November 1st, 2017. The remaining portion of the bill, the Commodity Rate, is unchanged at $3.65/Gigajoule (GJ). “As a focus on pipeline safety we continually upgrade existing infrastructure, while investing in the tools and technologies which form part of our system integrity program,” said Ken From, President and Chief Executive Office, SaskEnergy. “This coming year we have major projects planned to expand and move pipeline infrastructure away from the development occurring in both Saskatoon and Regina.” SaskEnergy has added more than 54,000 new residential, business and industrial customers since 2008, with another 4,500 new customers planned this year. With the proposed Delivery Service Rate increase, SaskEnergy’s residential delivery charges will remain among the lowest in the country – and the lowest in Western Canada. SaskEnergy last adjusted its Delivery Service Rate a year ago, when it implemented an 8.6 per cent increase, while also lowering its Commodity Rate by 14 per cent. When combined, this resulted in an overall decrease for residential customers of $1.70/month. With stable prices currently forecast for next winter, no Commodity Rate adjustment is required at this time. Additional information on the rate review process, including a full copy of SaskEnergy’s Delivery Service Rate application, will be available at www.saskratereview.ca.
