JURICK - Joseph George Jurick. February 22, 1929 - October 12, 2017. Joe was born to Josef and Mary (Kurucz) Jurick on February 22, 1929 at the family farm near Zeneta. Soon after, his parents moved to the Kinbrae area, where he lived and farmed for the rest of his life. He was the oldest of 3 children, including a sister Frances, who resides in Regina and a brother Jack who passed away at the age of two. Joe attended Kinbrae School to Grade 7. Joe’s greatest pleasures were farming, family, friends and music. He spent his entire life on the same farm growing grain and raising livestock. Some years were pretty tough but he never gave up. He trusted that God would always provide. Joe’s family was important to him and he never went anywhere unless all could come along. He enjoyed playing crokinole and canasta with family, friends and neighbours. In the last few years, he spent many hours playing cards with friends at the Senior’s Centers in Churchbridge and Langenburg. Music was what made Joe happy. As a young lad, Joe accompanied his father on guitar at many country school dances. He attended many Fiddle Competitions in Saskatchewan and was proud of the many trophies he won. Later in life he played violin with the Rhythym Rockets of Churchbridge and the Yorkton Parkland Fiddlers. He was an ever-in-demand fiddler right to the end. Church was also very important to Joe. He faithfully attended most Sundays with his family at his side - even at harvest time. He also volunteered many hours, including helping to build the church, tear down the old skating rink and building the new rink. Joe met Rose Appleton of the Dovedale district in 1949 when helping his father build a new house on the Appleton farm. They dated for five years before getting married on the 5th of July, 1955 in Gerald, SK. Together, they had four children; Donald, Allynn, Eleanor and Janice. They happily lived and worked together on the farm. In 2000, due to her illness, Joe placed Rose in a care home which he said was the hardest thing he ever had to do. Joe was predeceased by his beloved wife, Rose, in 2005 and his youngest daughter Janice, in 2013. Joe passed away peacefully at home on the farm on October 12, which was his wish. He will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by his sister, Frances Beck, his children; Don (Susan), Allynn, Eleanor (Jack) Grandquist, son-in-law Rod Stafford, step-granddaughters Lynn Reid, Leigh Wolowski, Dee-Dee Spilchen and their families and his many cousins, nieces and nephews. Prayers were said Monday, October 16, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. from St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Churchbridge. Funeral Mass was held Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. from St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Churchbridge with Father Paul Mau Nguyen presiding. Interment followed at St. Stephen’s Anglican Cemetery, Kinbrae. If friends so desire, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Remembrances and condolences may be shared at www.pcarscaddenfs.ca. Peter Carscadden Funeral Service, Esterhazy, SK were in care of the arrangements. 306-745-3304. LUTZ - Kevin George Lutz passed away suddenly in his home in Yorkton, SK on October 13, 2017. He was 55 years of age. Kevin was born on July 5, 1962 at Yorkton, SK, the eldest son of George and Shirley Lutz. Kevin grew up on the family farm and attended school in Yorkton. He was baptized on September 2, 1962 and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Yorkton on April 11, 1976. He attended the Simpson School from grades 1 to 6, the Yorkton Composite School from grades 7 to 9 and the Yorkton Regional High School from grades 10 to 12 where he graduated in 1980. Kevin helped out his father, George, on the family farm growing up. For Kevin the farm was his life. He enjoyed helping with the spring seeding, the fall harvest, milking cows, butchering cattle and chickens and many other farm-related tasks. Kevin enjoyed playing hockey and having numerous adventures with his brother, sisters and cousins. Riding steers and pigs with his siblings and cousins was one of his many fun childhood memories. He also enjoyed snowmobiling, hunting with his dad and siblings as well as drinking and having fun with his friends. Kevin was fond of animals, particularly dogs and owned several dogs over the years until he moved to Yorkton. He met Brenda (nee Hladun) and they were united in marriage on November 27, 1982. The couple settled in the village of Ebenezer and they were blessed with 2 sons and a daughter: Chris, Megan, Greg. They both worked hard to support the family. Kevin worked for Harvest Meats for several years as well as Young’s Plant World and other odd jobs such as driving bus, selling Christmas trees and working as a hired hand for other farmers. Kevin also helped out Uncle Edmund on his farm. He worked at Morris Industries for a while as well as a shingling company that his brother Peter helped him out with once in a while. Kevin’s health slowly and progressively became more serious which left him unable to work and forced him to go on disability. His drinking eventually became problematic and he and his wife, Brenda, separated in October of 1999 and divorced in 2001. Kevin joined Alcoholics Anonymous and stopped drinking on November 15, 1999. He remained sober until his death. Alcoholics Anonymous was a huge part in Kevin’s life, as it reinforced his faith and spirituality. Kevin started a lawn and garden business shortly after his separation. He ran the business on and off until his passing. Kevin met Betsy Bawden in October of 2004 and moved in to live with her in Yorkton shortly after. Kevin and Betsy were married on March 19, 2011 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Yorkton. Due to his diabetes, his eyesight deteriorated and he lost his driver’s license as a result in 2007 which devastated him. Despite this setback he was able to continue to do the things he most enjoyed such as fishing and quadding and you could always count on him wearing his cowboy hat wherever he went. He maintained a positive outlook on life and thanked God for watching over him through the good and bad and for all of the blessings he received. Family was very important to Kevin. Although Kevin was a man of few words, he cherished his time with his family and was proud of his children’s accomplishments. He was blessed with 5 grandchildren: Alice, Elizabeth, Julia, Harrison and Blake. Kevin had remained sober for 18 years and had helped many people recover from alcoholism over the years, thanks to the grace of God and the principles of the AA program. Kevin was predeceased by his parents, George and Shirley Lutz, his grandparents Pete and Philippina Lutz, Henry and Marie Weber and his step-grandmother, Frieda Lutz. He leaves to mourn his passing and cherish his memory his wife, Betsy Bawden of Yorkton, his ex-wife, Brenda Hladun of Yorkton; his children Chris (Karmen) Lutz of Pilot Butte; Megan (Kent) Shindle of Shellbrook and Greg Lutz of Saskatoon; his step-son Greg (Nicole) Bawden of Pilot Butte and his step-daughter, Jodi Bawden of Calgary, AB; 5 grandchildren, Julia, Harrison and Blake Shindle, Alice and Elizabeth Lutz; 2 step-grandchildren, Emma and Matthew Bawden; his sisters, Karen (Bruce) Murray of Red Deer, AB and Betty Lutz (Glen Taylor) of Roblin, MB and his brother, Peter Lutz (Sharon Lang) of Hudson Bay; his nieces Paula Lutz, Jessica Lutz and Rebecca Maksymiw, his nephews Brock Maksymiw, Kyle Lutz and Austin Maksymiw as well as his many relatives on Betsy’s side of the family, members of Brenda’s family, numerous aunts and uncles and many good friends. Prayers were held on Friday evening, October 20, 2017 and the funeral service was held on Saturday afternoon, October 21, 2017, all from St. Paul Lutheran Church in Yorkton. Rev. Heike Toeller officiated. Daughter Megan & son Chris read the 23rd Psalm and son Greg gave the eulogy. Pianist, Cheryle Zorn, led the congregation in the hymns ‘In the Garden’, and ‘How Great Thou Art’. Cheryle also sang ‘Amazing Grace’. A taped selection, ‘Thank You For Being My Dad’ was also played. The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Peter Blanchard, Doug Borys, Harvey Drotar, Terry Hyggen, Michael Yaholnitsky and Peter Lutz serving as the casket bearers. LARSON - Harold Melvin Larson died peacefully on October 18, 2017 at the age of 81 years. He leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Elaine and his three children Rick, Glenn (Jo) and Coreen (Mal) and his six grandchildren Gray and Quinn, Caroline and Meredith and Henry and Thomas. Harold was predeceased by his brothers, Leif and Spud and he will also be dearly missed by his sisters, Alfhild and Solvei. Harold thrived at the act of living. He loved spending time with friends and family. He would always put their needs ahead of his own and although he wasn’t rich, he acted like a millionaire when someone needed a helping hand. He was generous and gentle to his family and friends. If there was a way to measure age by hours spent at the lake, Dad would’ve been much older than 81. The cabin at York Lake was his second home for much of his life. He got his kids up on water skis, taught them to drive a boat, made endless errands for more gas during their water skiing phase and was one of the best bonfire starters around. Harold truly was the King of the Road. He worked as a salesmen for Smith Fruit and then put in many hours and miles on the highway travelling for Scott National. When he wasn’t on the road for work, he would load his family of five (plus dog) into the company car and hit the road on countless family road trips. He drove them to see the mountains of BC, the lakes of Saskatchewan and Manitoba, east to Ontario and most importantly, he showed them that you don’t need airconditioning and leg room to have a good time. He went by many names: Harold, Scoop, Floyd, Harry, Pops and Daaaaaaad but the ones he loved the most were Gramps and DadDad. His grandchildren were like sunshine in his life. He loved to be with them when they would visit and talk to them when they were away and Skype and Face Time if he had to! Those same six rays of sunshine in his life were also sunflowers in his garden. Every year there was one sunflower planted for each grandchild. He would watch them follow the sun from the view on his patio in the summer and feel like the sun was shining directly on him. After he retired in 1997, Harold was able to spend more time with his growing collection of grandchildren and growing collection of bird houses in his workshop. He would magically turn a pile of wood into toys, furniture or a bonfire if the creation didn’t quite make the grade. Harold’s twinkling eyes, soft heart and smile will be missed. But how lucky are we to have shared this time with such a wonderful man. A Service to Celebrate Harold’s Life was held on Saturday, October 21, 2017 from the Chapel of Christie’s Funeral Home in Yorkton, SK with Shelly Morris officiating. The prelude music was a selection of Harold’s favourite songs. The processional was “You’re My Best Friend” by Don Williams and the Recessional was “Now is The Hour” led by family friend, Gerry Thue. Harold’s children, Rick Larson, Glenn Larson and Coreen Larson shared words of remembrance and eulogy as well as a photo tribute in their Dad’s honour. The honourary pall bearers were Harold’s grandchildren, Gray Larson and Quinn Larson. The urn bearers were also his grandchildren, Henry Moore, Caroline Larson, Meredith Larson and Thomas Moore. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

COTE - Mr. Joseph Cote, “Lil Joe”, of Yorkton, passed away October 7, 2017 at Yorkton Regional Health Centre at the age of 70 years. Joseph Henry Bruce Cote was born on September 9, 1947 in the Kamsack district of Saskatchewan to Major and Bella (nee Keshane) Cote. UNCHULENKO - It is with great pride that we pay tribute to our mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother Dora Unchulenko. Dora passed away peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017 at the age of 92 at the Esterhazy Centennial Special Care Home. Dora (named Domka at birth) was born on April 16, 1925 and was the second youngest of Mary (nee Ellaschuk) and Leon Kozaruk’s five children. On July 21, 1946, Dora married Louie Unchulenko. Dora and Louie started their lives together on the Unchulenko homestead west of MacNutt. Here they welcomed their children Robert (1947), John (1948) and Sheila (1952). They remained on the farm until the children were old enough to start school at which time they moved into MacNutt. Dora was a kind and gentle soul, who very rarely complained. She took pride in her garden and flower beds and she loved visiting with family and friends. She also loved to make sure everyone was very well fed. Her home was always filled with the smells of borscht, sausage and perogies. We often joked that as soon as the supper dishes were washed and put away, she was already hauling everything back out for “lunch”. Ensuring we always had enough to eat was just one way she showed her love. After Louie passed away, Dora met Andrew Wereschuk and then moved to Calder. Dora and Andy moved to Churchbridge in 2008 and after Andy’s decline in health, Dora eventually moved to her final home in Esterhazy in 2015. Dora was predeceased by her husband Louie (1978), daughter Sheila (2011) and husband Andy (2015). She was also predeceased by her parents Mary and Leon Kozaruk, brothers Nick, Wasyl and Jim and sister Laura Danelko. Dora is remembered by her family: Bob & Carol Unchulenko of Esterhazy and John & Darlene Unchulenko of St. Albert, AB.; grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Kristen & Rae Groeneveld, Jarred, Jessica and Joel; Michelle Unchulenko; Mark Unchulenko & Lydia Molinara and Gio; Scott & Aimee Unchulenko, Bree, Cori and Bridger; Heather & Fred Kerschbaumer, Caleb and Emery; Graig & Christie Unchulenko, Makenna and Avery; Bryan & Erin Unchulenko, Mackenzie, Henrik and Ben and son-in-law Stan Doty and family. The funeral service was held on Friday, October 20, 2017 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Rev. Rodion Luciuk of St. Mark’s Orthodox Church in Yorkton officiating. Cantors, Bob Rohr, assisted by Rodney Flunder led in the singing of the responses. The interment followed in the Garden of Crucifixion with Kristen Groeneveld, Heather Kerschbaumer and Michelle, Mark, Scott, Graig & Bryan Unchulenko serving as the casket bearers. A memorial luncheon followed, son Bob gave a tribute to Dora on behalf of the family. Condolences may be left at baileysfuneralhome.com.

TODISCHUK - Mr. Al Todosichuk of the Kamsack district, beloved husband of Carol, passed away suddenly on October 18, 2017. He was 77 years of age. Alfred “Al” Albert Todosichuk was born June 27, 1940 in the Stornoway district of Saskatchewan. He was raised on the farm Southwest of Kamsack. As a young man Al served in the air force where he was trained in ground radar. Following his time in the air force he worked in Thompson, MB and Esterhazy, SK. He met Carol Watson in Yorkton, SK on a blind date in 1965 and they were happily married in 1966. In 1967 they welcomed their first son, Warren, in Langenburg, SK and they completed their family with a second son, Jason, while living in Squamish, BC in 1970. From Squamish, Al’s career path took the family to Fort Saskatchewan, AB where he became an instrumentation supervisor at Dow Chemical. In 1977 the family returned to Kamsack to settle down at the farm Al grew up on. While still busy farming in 1978 he became a Chrysler dealer. Al’s success was based on his unique ability to do business, but also to build connections with every person in the community, bringing smiles to all who came near him. In 1997, Warren joined the business and Al continued to be involved in the dealership until fully retiring in 2007. In his retirement Al and Carol became regular travellers to Yuma, AZ and wintered there every year. Many new and dear friendships were formed in their home away from home. Al’s community involvement included being a Mason and a Shriner for many years. The joys in Al’s life include being around his children and his granddaughters. He loved being busy and remained very active with many projects and hobbies - especially around his beloved farm and the cabin at Madge Lake. He was very proud of the cabin he built, nicknamed the “Lego palace” and immensely enjoyed hosting family and friends in the beautiful surroundings. Al will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humour and his love of “kibitzing and teasing” to those closest to him. His wit always lit up the conversation and he could warm any conversation with the twinkle in his eye and his warm smile. He was recognized and welcomed every place he went. Al was always generous with his time, his skills, his tools and his expertise with those close to him - he loved to help others with their projects. We remember that as sharp as he was in business, he was equally kind and loving in his personal relationships. Al will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife of 51 years, Carol - who he always called the love of his life and the ‘girl of his dreams’, his children, Warren (Sherry) and Jason (Patti) and his granddaughters Kennedy and Tori. He also leaves behind his mother Elsie, sisters Viona and Mavis (Ken), brother Garry (Linda), brother-in-law Jack, numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and many other relatives and friends. Al is predeceased by his father Fred and sister Marie. Al will be forever remembered: friend, grandfather, father and loving husband. “If there ever comes a day when we can’t be together, keep me in your heart, I’ll stay there forever.” - A.A. Milne (Winnie the Pooh). A private family service was held at Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Rev. Deborah Smith officiating. Memorials honouring Al’s life may be to the Heart & Stroke foundation as gifts of remembrance. Condolences and memories of Al can be sent to the family at www.baileysfuneralhome.com.

duced Vivian Talbot who co-ordinated the funding and hall upgrades along with other willing volunteers. Talbot gave a bit of background: The hall was originally opened in 1948. It was built after WWII by volunteers, most of whom were young men who had just returned from overseas. There was a meeting room upstairs for the newly formed Legion #277. In memory of their comrades who had lost their lives, the official name of the building became “Dubuc Memorial Hall”. Volunteers have always been the backbone of our community and still are. However, now we struggle with less people, working off the farm, two income families, driving time, shiftwork, etc. Our hall needed some major work to keep it viable and even with some volunteer help, we would need to pay contractors to get everything done. We set about getting estimates and filling out grant applications to help fund this project. We needed 3 letters of support from the community. Marilyn Schwitzer, on behalf of the Potashville singles, supplied one reference letter to help us plead our case. In 2015, we needed an accessible washroom and new shingles as the roof had started to leak. Bids came in at $40,000 for this. We were so excited when we were approved for a $25000 New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) Grant. This is a federal program through Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). In our letter of approval, it stated: The organization will replace the roofing and renovate for accessible bathroom for seniors to continue participating in singles dances and many other social events. With this help, the bathroom and metal roofing was completed in summer 2016 costing the Dubuc Recreation Association (DRA) an additional $14000. In 2016, we applied for a grant again to paint the hall interior and refinish the well-worn hardwood

floor. The estimates totalled $33,000 so we were absolutely elated in spring of 2017 to receive another $25,000 grant from NHSP from the federal program through ESDC. The approval letter again stated: Seniors involved with the organization will repair and repaint the stained ceiling and walls and refinish deteriorated hardwood floor to continue 50+ dances, music and banquets etc. Ace Painting gave us a much more reasonable quote than we had previously received. We have now completed the work and have received permission to use $5000 in remaining grant funds to replace the entrance doors hopefully by yearend. We wish to acknowledge that without the 2 X $25000 grants from the federal NHSP and ESDC, we would not have been able to afford to upgrade the Memorial Hall for use for the next generations. Talbot welcomed everyone present to share in the excitement and celebration of the refurbished hall. She then called the dignitaries forward to do a ceremonial ribbon cutting: Dennis Toth – The town owns the building, the DRA operates it. Dennis is a Village of Dubuc councillor. Leon Powell – a longtime DRA board member represented the committee. Peter Nielsen – Mayor of the Village of Dubuc. Terra Talbot - Treasurer for DRA represented the hall committee and last, but not least, Marilyn Schwitzer - letter writer extraordinaire, president of the Potashville Singles Club represented Dance Club members. “As we reopen the Dubuc Memorial Hall for another 70 years of fun and fellowship. Get ready, set, CUT!!” Terra Talbot then announced to the crowd that there would be no rent charged to the Potashville Singles Club for the hall for the evening’s festivities as a Thank-You for their con-
