LIEBREICH - Lovey Liebreich (Kozlow) passed away suddenly, November 18, 2016 at the Pasqua Hospital in Regina, at the age of 80 years. She had been taking treatments for throat cancer and was, to that point, doing marvellously. We all thought we’d see the other side, but it was not to be. Lovey was born April 30, 1936 in Buchanan, the first of five children for Pete and Pearl Kozlow. She graduated high school in Buchanan and subsequently attended Teacher’s College in Saskatoon. She began her teaching career at Whitesand School north-east of Springside in the fall of 1955 and taught there until 1962. It was there she met her husband and lifelong partner Norman Liebreich, whom she married August 11, 1961. They were blessed with two sons, Warren in 1962 and Trent in 1965. Lovey returned to teaching as a substitute, both short and long term, after her boys were both in school. She enjoyed the children and especially the comradery of the other teachers. The family resided on the Liebreich farm until 1992 when they moved to Springside and remained there until her passing. Lovey’s entire life can be defined as that of a caregiver. As a young girl she was responsible for her younger siblings, next as a teacher in a one room school and then for her own family. She and Norman continued to care for their son Warren who lived with them until their passing. Lovey’s life revolved around family and providing for them. She was most at peace in her garden where her efforts were concentrated on growing practical things that she could freeze, can, or in some way preserve. She drew great pleasure from her flowers and the birds they attracted, especially the hummingbirds which she always provided nectar for. Lovey enjoyed company and was always a prepared hostess with freezers level full of homemade goodies. She was a dedicated and proud grandmother. Lovey made special efforts to attend and support her grandchildren’s activities, whether hockey, baseball, or cattle shows. She enthusiastically came out to watch and cheer them on. After her initial battle with cancer in 1994 and its subsequent challenges, Lovey was most grateful for her twenty plus years ‘cancer free’. Those years provided her the opportunity to see her grandchildren grow to young adults and to be involved in their lives. For those years we were all blessed. Lovey was predeceased by her husband of 54 years Norman; her parents Pearl and Pete; her brother, Peter and her sister, Nadia. She leaves to celebrate her life her sons, Warren and Trent (Janelle); grandchildren, Macy, Garrett and Carson; brothers, Fred (Gladys) and Alex as well as nieces, nephews and cousins and their families, as well as many good friends. A Memorial Service was held on Friday, December 2, 2016 from the Chapel of Christie’s Funeral Home in Yorkton, SK with Kathy Novak serving as the Funeral Celebrant. The processional music was “In the Garden” as sung by Wilf Carter and the Recessional music was “Go Rest High on That Mountain” by Vince Gill. Special music was provided by Marlon and Tammy Milbrandt, Sheldon Fichtner and Kitty Arndt who sang, “Amazing Grace”. Following a reception at the Gunn Reception Room at Christie’s Funeral Home, the Cremation Committal took place in the Springside Town Cemetery, Springside, SK with Lovey’s son, Warren Liebreich serving as the urn bearer. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

A hairy situation indeed
A Toronto area man is considering legal action against UPS because, he says, they refused to hire him due to the fact he has a beard. According to the man, he sent an email applying for a job and got a reply asking him several questions, including, ‘do you accept the company’s strict appearance guidelines requiring employees to be clean shaven and hide visible piercings and tattoos’. He answered by saying he has a short, well-trimmed beard and short hair. After a short exchange, UPS told him unless he keeps facial hair for medical or religious reasons he would be ineligible to work. To me, rather than make a big deal out of this, he should move on to another potential employer. I can recall being a young man and very interested in Air Cadets. The problem was that I had long hair and was unwilling to cut it. Rather than sue someone, I decided Air Cadets wasn’t for me. Seems simple. In Major League Baseball, the New York Yankees make all their players cut their hair and shave their faces. If we are going after UPS for being discriminatory, then we should go after the New York Yankees as well. I’m told the Toronto Maple Leafs have a similar policy as that’s been Lou Lamoriello’s guideline that he requires players to follow, so it was like that in New Jersey for many years as
MIKE STACKHOUSE mikestackhouse@hotmail.com
Stackhouse Soapbox well. I’m no stranger to speeding tickets. I admit to being a frequent receiver of them. Over the last couple of years I’ve made a more conscious effort to drive closer to the speed limit. However, that doesn’t always mean I’m going to escape traffic cops either. Last weekend while travelling on the four lane highway near Winnipeg, I was pulled over for doing 119 in a 100. I, actually, told the officer I may have been doing slightly more than 120; but figured at 110 you get 10%. That’s when I learned it wasn’t a 110. Total ignorance on my part. You see, when you turn off the Yellowhead Highway and on to the number one west of Portage la Prairie, there is one sign that indicates the limit is 100 and not the usual 110. The speed limit changes, frequently, on that stretch as it revs up to 110 a few kilometres down the highway and then reduces again as you hit Portage and then goes back up for a bit only to dip to 70 once you reach Headingley.
The officer joked that was the first time he had been told by an offender they are going even faster than he clocked on radar, but I told him it was only because I assumed I had to have been going faster or why pull me over? He agreed it was obvious I was, completely, unaware of the speed changes but gave me a ticket anyway as opposed to educating someone from out of province who isn’t on that stretch of highway very often. I noticed that all the other speed limit change signs have two big orange flags coming out of the top corners so you don’t miss them. Unlike the one I missed, that doesn’t have the flags. Nevertheless, this is my problem when it comes to traffic offenses: It’s never about actual policing. It’s about fishing for fines. Catch as many people as you can and write as many tickets as you can to build up the revenue. For example, when was the last time you saw a police cruiser with the radar out in a school zone on Gladstone Avenue in between YRHS and Sacred Heart? I’ve never
seen one. Instead, they go right beside the sign that says ‘50’ and if you are doing 50 or more before the sign, they stop you. Chances are quite good you were doing 40 in the ‘real’ school zone and you sped up to 50 just a bit too early. That’s not what I call ticketing in the name of safety. To their credit, however, I have seen an increased police presence in school zones and that needs to be applauded.
I have seen lots of people applauding the Grey Cup and what a great game it was. I will be the bah humbug and say the finish to the game was great, but this constant stopping of the game to review plays on video replay sucks any life out of enjoyment for me. It happens way too much. The system is also, inherently, flawed. In all sports. My favorite is the NHL, whereby you the Jets lost a game a couple of weeks ago because one of their players was a toe offside and it went to video review and the Jets, yes, did break the rules. The other night, one of their players got high sticked in the eye and had to leave the game but there was no penalty and that isn’t something you can challenge. Why? Just ditch it. I can live with human error.

US election leaves questions The U.S. election was a chilling illustration of the atrocious state of public discourse. It doesn’t bode well for a country once admired for leadership in education and science. As public relations expert and former David Suzuki Foundation board chair James Hoggan writes in I’m Right and You’re an Idiot, “polluted public discourse is an enormous obstacle to change.” How, he asks, do we “create the space for higher quality public debates where passionate opposition and science shape constructive, General Employment

DAVID SUZUKI
Science Matters mind-changing conversations”? If those vying to be president of the most powerful country in the world couldn’t do it, what hope is there? For his book, co-written with Grania Litwin, Hoggan interviewed a range of thinkers, from linguist and cognitive scientist George Lakoff to the Dalai Lama. Whether or not their insights can raise the level of political discourse among politicians who think namecalling, logical fallacies and lies constitute legitimate debate remains to be seen, but the book offers advice for anyone who wants to improve conversations and create positive change in this age of online bickering, propaganda and entrenched positions. Social psychologist Carol Tavris says part of the problem relates to “cognitive dissonance.” Unlike scientists, who revise their positions in response to testing and challenging hypotheses, most people resist changing their minds, especially if they feel it would threaten them or their real or imagined privileges. Yale Law School psychology and law professor Dan Kahan says confirmation bias and motivated reasoning also come into play. Confirmation bias is people’s tendency to seek and select information that confirms their beliefs. Motivated reasoning is the unconscious habit of processing information to suit an end or goal that doesn’t necessarily conform to accurate beliefs.
Climate change is a good case in point. Although evidence for human-caused global warming is backed by mountains of research compiled over decades by scientists from around the world, and its impacts are observable, many people refuse to accept it, promoting debunked ideas and fossil fuel industry talking points, because they feel profits or their way of life will be negatively affected by addressing it. “When you have a combination of economic, ideological and psychological biases all in play, it’s very difficult for human beings to easily accept large-scale social and economic change,” Tavris observes. So how do we overcome these stumbling blocks, especially when climate change deniers hold power in the U.S.? In looking at changing perceptions and habits around things like seatbelts, smoking and environmental protection, Tavris argues that dialogue and changing people’s hearts isn’t enough, that “you have to first change the laws, change public notions of what is acceptable or unacceptable behavior and change the economic consequences of practices you want to alter.” That’s more than a challenge in the current political atmosphere. But we have to start somewhere. And improving the ways we communicate with each other is essential. Much of current discussion around the U.S. election result centres on politicians not listening to those left behind as global trade
and technology outpaced antiquated economic systems. Many say the Democrats failed in part because they abandoned those who lost livelihoods in coal mines or factories as technologies changed and corporate leaders shifted production to parts of the world with lower labour costs and standards. Although the president-elect’s choices of appointments and advisers show he’s deep in the pockets of corporate America, especially the fossil fuel industry, he succeeded in tapping into the disillusionment. We must listen to those who are suffering. We should also consider the difference between debate and dialogue. As social scientists Steve Rosell and Daniel Yankelovich tell Hoggan, “debate is about seeing weaknesses in other people’s positions, while dialogue is about searching for strength and value in our opponents’ concerns.” Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thích Nhat Hanh says, “Speak the truth, but not to punish.” While facts and reason are important, Hoggan points out, they’re not enough to change people’s minds. “Research coming from cognitive and brain science tells us if we want to be persuasive we must appeal to people’s values and speak from a moral position, rather than layering on more data and statistics.” The world is in a precarious position. Hoggan’s book offers a path to the kind of discourse necessary to resolving our collective problems. David Suzuki is a scientist, broadcaster, author and co-founder of the David Suzuki Foundation.
