SWIDZINSKI - Mrs. Olga Swidzinski, resident of the Yorkton & District Nursing Home, beloved wife of the late Ted Swidzinski, passed away on Monday, September 12, 2016 at the age of 93 years. Olga was born in Sandy Lake, MB, to Veronika and Metro Zibchyn. Olga and her family eventually settled in the Brandon School District near Kamsack where she attended school and lived and worked for most of her life. In 1939, she married Mike Swerhun. They farmed and often spent winters in Toronto and Winnipeg, working and visiting relatives. After Mike’s passing in 1953, Olga moved to Toronto and worked in retail. She soon returned to her beloved prairies and “the fields of golden wheat”. She continued working in retail (Metropolitan, Woolworths) in both Saskatoon and Yorkton. Olga married Ted in 1955. Together they built and expanded a successful farming operation. They raised three children in the close-knit farming community where Olga spent many happy hours socializing with friends and neighbours in their homes and at dances, sports days, card parties and the highway store. She was very involved with the Brandon School Community Centre. Olga grew up in a musical family and played several instruments by ear, including the mandolin and harmonica. She loved listening to music and had a rich and varied record collection. Her children still listen to and enjoy the music she introduced them to. And oh how she loved to dance! Olga is remembered for her joyful laugh, quick wit and sense of humour. She had a way with words and entertained all with vivid stories of her life. She also had a keen interest in politics and enjoyed discussing current events. Olga was an excellent cook. No one would go hungry on her watch, feasting on her delicious food, much of it made with ingredients from her large garden. Her perogies and pickles are spoken of reverently by those lucky enough to have sampled them. Most important to Olga was her family. Her devotion, hard work and giving spirit ensured that her parents, siblings, husband and children were well taken care of and supported in times of need. When grandchildren and great-grandchildren arrived on the scene she delighted in spending time with them and hearing about their adventures in the world. Upon retirement, Olga and Ted moved to Yorkton. The farm was still near and dear to them and they continued to spend summers there, enjoying many visits from their children and grandchildren. Olga was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Ted; her parents, Metro and Veronika (Romanchuk) Zibchyn; brothers Pete and Len and sister Marie (Flodstedt); Mike Swerhun and brothers-in-law, Russ Flodstedt and Fred Naboznak. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Melanie (Harold) Malayney of Cold Lake, Marlene of Vancouver, Thad (Crystal) of Yorkton; five grandchildren, Matthew and Chris Malayney, Danica Lescano, Claire and Addison Swidzinski; two great-grandchildren, Mia and Brayden Lescano; sister-in-law, Eileen Naboznak; and nephews and nieces Len, Debra, Bruce, Fay, Barbara and David. Olga’s smile would light up a room. Her strong, youthful spirit and kindness inspired us all. She was much loved and will never be forgotten. The funeral service was held on Saturday, September 17, 2016 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Rev. Jen Dresser of St. Andrew’s United Church officiating. Danica Lescano read scripture and Crystal Swidzinski gave the eulogy. Pianist, Amanda Buhler led the congregation in the hymn ‘Lord of the Dance’ and sang ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ as the recessional. The processional hymn was ‘Somewhere My Love’. The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Matthew & Christopher Malayney, Garry Tetoff, Myron Tatarniuk, Brent Cherkas and Bruce Flodsedt serving as the casket bearers. Condolences can be left at baileysfuneralhome. com. Memorials were to the Heart & Stroke Society or to one’s Charity of Choice.

SKORETZ - Mr. Lawrence Skoretz of Yorkton, beloved husband of Joanne, passed away September 13, 2016. Lawrence was born June 4, 1949 in Invermay, SK. He was the eldest of Adam and Irene (Yerema) Skoretz. His early years were spent on the family farm, north of Buchanan. He started school in Mikado. In 1959 the family moved to Buchanan where he continued his school and graduated in 1967. Lawrence graduated from the U of S in 1971 with a Bachelor of Commerce and started his first job as Secretary-Treasurer with the Canora School Division. He was active in the church group, CYMK, as an advisor where he met the love of his life, Joanne (Cipywnyk). Lawrence and Joanne were married July 26, 1980 in Brooksby, SK. They have 4 children, Evan, Melanie, Christine and Michael. Lawrence, Joanne and family purchased their cabin in August of 1987 at Burgis Beach. They share and continue to spend every free weekend and summer together as a family, making many of Lawrence’s favourite memories. The family moved to Kamsack in 1988 where Lawrence worked as a Town Administrator for five years. He worked briefly at the Saskatchewan Curling Association. He worked and lived until his retirement in Ituna as the Town Administrator. After a brief retirement, Lawrence worked as the Administrator at the Ilarion Residence in Saskatoon. From there he moved as the Administrator for the Village of Theodore. He was always involved in the community wherever he lived. His interests were government, politics, being involved with the elected Local School Board where he assisted in the development of the Horizon School Division, Local Town Councils, SLGA, Elections Canada, various church activities and volunteering (even as a local firefighter). His true passion was spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed skiing, boating, fishing, dancing, travelling the world, being part of Drama Clubs, Curling Teams and the Choir. Lawrence and Joanne moved to Yorkton to enjoy their retirement. Unable to sit idle for long, he began working part-time with the Yorkville Public Utility Board. Lawrence was a very positive and easy going person and loved to socialize with his family and friends. He always enjoyed being around people and was so proud of his family. He loved to share his family’s accomplishments and successes. The respect and pride he had for those he loved could be heard in his voice and seen in his actions. Lawrence is lovingly remembered by his wife of 36 years, Joanne and their children, Evan (Krista Creguer), Melanie (Grant) Bartzen and their “soon to be” grandson, Christine (David) Bernakevitch and Michael. Lawrence is predeceased by his mother, Irene, mother and father-in-law, Mary and Peter Cipywnyk, brother-in-law, Larry Cipywnyk, sisters-in-law, Heather Skoretz and Diana Skoretz. Prayers were held on Sunday, September 18, 2016 and the Funeral Service on Monday, September 19, 2016 at Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Yorkton with very Rev. Father Mel Slashinsky and Very Rev. Archpriest Taras Makowsky officiating. The responses were led by Yvonne Panchuk & Parish Choir Members. The cross bearer was Terry Shinkewski and the banner bearers were Jim Shinkewski and Farron Mayne. The interment took place in Canora Town Cemetery with Dale Skoretz, Adrian Yerema, Trevor Yerema, David Yerema, Shane Yerema and Richard Yerema serving as the casket bearers. Memorial donations may be made in memory of Lawrence to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church as gifts of remembrance. SOBKOW - Mr. Bill Sobkow of the Calder district, beloved husband of Erna Sobkow, passed away suddenly at his home on September 14, 2016. He was 70 years of age. William Anthony Sobkow was born in Yorkton, SK on June 17, 1946. He was raised on the Sobkow family homestead. He attended Calder School, and later, St. Joseph’s College in Yorkton. As young boys, Bill and his brother Steve, spent hours playing baseball on the diamond they had built in their pasture. The highlight of getting a yard light on the farm was the ability to now play ball at night. And that’s how it all beganthis lifelong passion for baseball. As a 16 year old lefty, Bill pitched three shut-out innings against Satchel Paige’s touring Colored All Star Team. The following year he was named Rookie of the Year in the Saskatchewan Major Baseball League (SMBL). In 1964, Bill received a baseball scholarship to Fresno State University in California, where he earned his BA and Bed degrees. He returned home for the summers to play for the Yorkton Cardinals, who in 1967, won the SMBL championship. Following university, Bill worked briefly in Montreal. He then worked as a car salesman and as a sports broadcaster in Lloydminster, SK. This is where he met Erna. Bill’s love for the land brought him back home to Calder where he farmed and raised cattle with his father Tony and his brother Steve. Currently, he was farming with his son, Philip. Bill and Phil had daily conversations discussing farming, life and sports. They talked especially about baseball, a passion that Bill would pass down to Phil. Bill was immensely proud of Philip when he was drafted and signed by Bill’s favourite team, the Los Angeles Dodgers. This passion and love for the game led Bill to coach and mentor Philip, Phil’s friends and countless others. In 2002, he would recreate the Yorkton Cardinals in the Western Major Baseball League (WMBL) as the team we know today. As Head Coach and General Manager, he had a reputation for fairness, for treating everyone with respect and for giving everyone a chance. He was known for lobbying passionately for the principles in which he believed. Bill spent countless hours every winter scouting and searching for the next group of young men who would make up the Yorkton Cardinals. In his younger years, winters found Bill at the curling rink. In 1973, he curled in the Northern Alberta final. Upon moving to Yorkton, Bill spent many years curling in and winning major bonspiels throughout the province. He was a role model and a mentor to the young curlers. Bill loved to be involved. He played fastball for the Calder Comets, was an umpire and owned a sports card shop, The Dugout. He was on the Calder Credit Union Board and spent many years as President of the Calder Recreation Board. Currently, he was the Secretary-Treasurer of St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Calder and the President of the PK Bingo Association in Yorkton. Bill was a kind and gentle soul, finding nothing but the good in every single person that crossed his path. He had such love for his family. He was so proud and supportive of his children and grandchildren and absolutely adored Erna. He spent countless hours with his children, teaching them all the important lessons of life, including learning the names of all the major league baseball team stadiums! He loved giving them geography quizzes and teaching them a daily word in Ukrainian. He loved to dance with Erna and to brag about her excellent culinary skills. He was predeceased by his father Tony in 1993 and by his mother Anne (Mostoway) in 2010. Left to cherish his memories and to celebrate his life are his wife Erna (Warkentin); his daughter Erin (Darren Bolme), Melissa, Elia, Zoe and Kale; his daughter Raegan (Alex George), Milo and Uma; his daughter Nancy; his son Philip (Chelsea Todd); his brother Steve (Sharon Romaniuk) and many, many relatives and friends. The Prayer Service was held on Monday, September 19, 2016 at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton with Very Rev. Bohdan Lukie and Rev. Methodius Kushko officiating. The responses were lead by Lorne Stecyshyn and parish choir members. The Funeral Liturgy was celebrated on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Calder with Very Rev. Bohdan Lukie, C.Ss.R. as the Celebrant. The cross bearer was Andrea Sobkow (niece) and the epistle readers were (granddaughters) Elia Bolme & Zoe Bolme. The interment followed in St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery, Calder District with Philip Sobkow (son), Steven Sobkow (brother), Darren Bolme (son-in-law), Ivan Sobkow (nephew), Vern Warkentin (brother-in-law) and Peter Warkentin (brotherin-law) serving as the casket bearers. Memorials honouring Bill’s life may be made to a charity of choice. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.baileysfuneralhome.com

PLAN NUMBER 7-41001 MULTI-GABLED ROOF LINE This charming twostorey, four-bedroom home with its multigabled roof-line features a distinctive cut-stone archway that marks the front entrance. The design includes an unfinished bonus room over the double garage, as well as an optional unfinished basement. A veranda extends across the front of the home, attached to a covered porch that shelters the front entry. Inside, a roomy foyer includes a coat closet. The great room is directly ahead, and includes a gas fireplace flanked by shelving and a view out to the terrace overlooking the back garden. The dining rooms French doors open onto the covered portion of the back terrace, perfect for grilling in all kinds of weather. Part of the ceiling in the great room and dining area is double-height, lending the rooms an airy aspect. The roomy kitchen features a U-shaped counter configuration that surrounds a work island. Tucked in beside the generous pantry is a handy telephone desk. A window over the double

sink looks out to the back garden. To the immediate right of the foyer is the U-shaped stairway to the second floor. Nearby is a den, along with the laundry room and a two-piece powder room. To the left of the foyer, the master suite occupies a bayed-out area. French doors from the bedroom offer access to a covered portion of the back terrace. The ensuite is reached via a large walk-in closet and includes double basins and a soaker tub, as well as a glassed-in shower stall. All ceilings on the main floor measure nine feet high, except as noted in the great room and dining area. Upstairs, the second and third bedrooms look out to the back garden, with the fourth bedroom looking out to the front. All the secondary bedrooms share a bathroom with two basins, lit by a skylight. A study area on the landing has room for a desk, and an unfinished storage area will provide extra space. Near the entrance to the bonus room are cupboards for linen and cleaning tools. Exterior finishes include horizontal siding with board-and-batten

accents in the gables, as well as decorative stonework and painted trim. This home measures 67 feet, six inches wide and 65 feet deep, for a total of 3,093 square feet. Heading back into the same old “rind” Now that school is back in session, routines are back into effect as well. Mornings are back to being rushed for both children and parents. Afternoon and evening meals are planned beforehand, rushed in the making and scarfed down quickly to accommodate the work schedule. Perhaps we should be taking lessons from our neighbours across the pond when it comes to eating habits, since our own could be leading us into poor physical and mental health. Since the birth of the online blog, those living abroad have archived their experiences. These experiences have been shared among expatriates, leading to an interesting discovery: the striking differences between American/ Canadian and European eating habits. In Europe, France in particular, supper is eaten around 8 p.m. and can take anywhere from two to three hours to finish. This is not due to the amount of food, but to the amount of friends and family gathered around the table. Eating is a social experience, where conversation is the opening course. This “slow food” approach is an important part of their culture. It is also a smart approach, since one has a larger appetite in the presence of people. As a result of eating more at one meal, the need for snacking is then eliminated later. As for the food itself, portion sizes are much smaller and whole

Michaela Miller

Inside My Head ingredients are used. These whole ingredients would be locally sourced nuts, fish, vegetables and oils. In Italy, the cappuccino is traditionally the only thing one would drink in the morning, for breakfast. In England, “afternoon tea” allows one to have something sweet during the day. Compare all of this to the Canadian eating lifestyle; a glaring contrast. In 2015, a nationwide eating survey was conducted by the Ricardo Media Team. They found out that two-thirds of Canadians bring their lunch to work. This is likely because most lunch breaks are only half an hour, barely enough time to enjoy a sandwich and a beverage. Families eat together five out of seven days, and the meal they sit down to together most is supper. The average amount of time spent on a meal is thirty minutes, and is rarely planned out a day in advance. This is likely because of our demanding schedules. Our careers and education are considered of high importance as

opposed to eating. Thus, we tend to eat as fast as possible in order to get back to work. More often than not, this also means eating alone. Sweets are the food of choice in the morning; pancakes, muffins, cereals and toasts. Many snacks are had during the day, depending on if one even ate breakfast or lunch. Coffee is drunk whenever the mood strikes. Our western lifestyle is not only demanding on our minds, but is demanding of our bodies. We cram pre-prepared, processed foods into our stomachs in a short amount of time, expecting to receive energy that lasts throughout the day. We eat when we can, and we choose to eat sweet. If we can begin to incorporate the eating habits of those in Europe a couple of things will begin to happen. Number one is that

families will be closer. With meal times dedicated to the family, more conversations can be had, leading to bonding and feelings of belonging. At the very least, the silence between you and your teenagers can become more comfortable. Secondly, time allotted for meals is a chance to think about nourishment. Meals that take longer to prepare are generally more nutritious. With better nutrition comes better memory, focus, stronger bodily function and balanced hormones. The final thing to note is that longer meal times foster mindful eating. When you can sit and enjoy the meal in front of you without looming schedules and screen distractions, you begin to notice your chewing. Hearing the crunch of food between your jaws brings awareness to how much you eat and the diversity of textures you consume. This is helpful for those watching their weight and those who want to “fuel” their body properly. Due to our businesscentric lifestyle, our western eating habits have taken a toll on both our physical well-being and our mental well-being. In comparing our eating to that of our European half, we gain insight and a new understanding of mindful eating. In order to bring balance back, we must try to give our meal times a higher priority than our work schedules.

New television fare for fall View from the Cheap Seats is an extension of the newsroom, which is frequently a site of heated debate on topics ranging from the extremely serious to the utterly ridiculous. In addition to the views of our two regular columnists Thom Barker and Calvin Daniels printed here, please visit yorktonthisweek.com for additional web exclusive content by Michaela Miller and Devin Wilger. This week: What are you looking forward to watching in the Fall television season.

VIEW FROM THE CHEAP SEATS

When this topic came up, I was certain my top pick for fall TV was going to be Blue Jays post-season baseball. They were up two games on Boston and three on Baltimore in the American League East. And everything was clicking. Even a meltdown, it seemed at the time, would still get them comfortably into a wildcard spot. But, baseball is a cruel mistress and now all bets are off. Still hoping, though, that I will be able to spend most of October

cheering on the Jays. That being said, there really is nothing I am looking forward to with anticipation. I don’t watch much of anything but sports anymore and if I do get interested in a TV series, it is usually a couple (or more) years after its premiere when I can watch it on-demand a season at a time. I also hate the fact that most series these days require a full-season commitment because of long story lines. Even series with standalone episodes, have secondary and overarching plots. If a series like that is compelling enough to hold my interest I will record it and watch at my leisure. There are some

ongoing shows I will tune in for the season premiere such as Murdoch Mysteries, Big Bang Theory and Hell’s Kitchen. I may watch the premiere of Lethal Weapon, just because of nostalgia, but I do not hold out much hope for it long-term. In fact, it is kind of grating, simply on principle, that the industry keeps rolling out movie spinoffs and series remakes rather than taking a chance on original content. Fortunately non-traditional sources (Netflix etc.) are picking up the slack. If I had to sum up my sentiment regarding the upcoming TV season in one word, it would be ‘meh’.

-Thom Barker

While some of those around me in the office shun television for loftier pursuits of dog walking and Trump anger sessions, I happily admit to being at least something of a TV junkie. I suspect that was born out of the fact growing up on a Saskatchewan farm the one channel (CBC) was a window on a much bigger world. Saturday evenings were Hockey Night in Canada with dad. Sundays the worlds of Disney was a treat, and when a bit older the Beverly Hillbillies and finally I grew old enough to stay up to watch Bonanza. So TV runs rather deep for me as an avenue to escapism and joy. Many look at TV today

and cringe. There are so many horrible shows; Duck Dynasty, Survivor, American Idol and a list of their ilk that could fill this page. But like farmers harvesting a crop, you have to sift through the chaff to find the kernels, or in this case the best of TV; the recently ended Hell on Wheels, Elementary, The Americans, Blacklist, Expanse, 12 Monkeys, and solid efforts such as Killjoys, Dark Matter, NCIS and a number of others. So with that each fall I admit I hit series record (DVRs are the greatest invention in ages), for new series. A few won’t make it past two or three episodes before being dumped, some I will suffer through in hopes they get better (Gotham) and then dump, and a few might become regular fare. This fall there will be a couple of dozen new shows launching, most now, a few dribbling out in January, but which ones will I give a try? I was a fan of Richard Dean Anderson’s MacGyver in the late 1980s, so with trepidation I will give the relaunch on CBS a look. Lethal Weapon with the usually annoying Damon Wayans, but Clayne Crawford as Martin Riggs might be special, so mark that one to take a look at. As a lover of scifi HBO’s Westworld looks great, Timeless (NBC), American Gods based on the wonderful novel by Neil Gaiman, are on list, and the new Star Trek Discovery looms large. A few more to seek out; Frequency, Fleabag (BBC), Conviction are also at least on the radar. How many survive until season end? Ah, therein lies the big question indeed? - Calvin Daniels
