SMITH - Bruce Smith, former longtime Yorkton resident, passed away peacefully at Victoria General Hospital on the evening of September 15, 2017 after enjoying a full, happy and long life. He now joins his beloved wife, Gladi Smith, resting peacefully together once again. Bruce is survived by a large family including his son Bob (and Linda), daughter Barb (and Dave); 3 grandchildren and their spouses; 6 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters; nieces and nephews and friends. Bruce was born on May 17, 1925 and raised in Yorkton, SK to A. W. “Bert” and Eva Smith, a baker/restaurant owner and well known business man. In his childhood he spent most of his time helping his father in the café. During his young adulthood, Bruce was a member of the Royal Canadian Navy during WWII, serving from 1942 - 1945 with the supply ship HMCS Antigonish and discharged in Victoria BC. After the war, Bruce returned to Saskatchewan where he took up farming in Springside for a year while newlywed to the love of his life, moved to Gladstone, MB for a short time in a car dealership and returned to Yorkton selling automotive parts at Korb Motors. Bruce then found his career in opening his own insurance firm, Smith Insurance Agencies from 1961 - 1991 in Yorkton, SK. He continued to build a busy and joyful life with Gladi by starting a family and becoming heavily involved within the community. Bruce was a distinguished Mason of the Masonic Order starting in 1955 and through 50 plus years of service and dedication, held various important roles such as Worshipful Master of Yorkton Lodge No. 12 A.F. & A.M. (1962), Lodge Secretary (1967 - 1981), District Deputy Grand Master of the Lodge District No. 10 (1972 - 1973), Grand Representative to Kentucky (1978) and President and High Priest of the Royal Arch Masons King George Chapter No. 14. He also held the position of President of General Alexander Ross Branch No. 77 Royal Canadian Legion in 1966. Additionally, during this time, Bruce was also passionate about his involvement with the Parkland Shrine Club and the WA WA Shrine Temple in Regina. He joined the Shrine in 1965 and after many years of dedication and hard work he served as Potentate in 1986. Bruce continued to be involved in Masons and Shrine activities for many more years while in Yorkton and eventually received both his 60 year pin for the Masonic Order and his 50 year pin for the Shrine. A few years after his wife’s passing, Bruce moved to Victoria, BC in 2006 where he loved to visit Esquimalt Lagoon to watch the navy ships maneuver off the coast. He spent his last few years living at the Alexander Mackie Lodge in Victoria, spending time with other friendly residents singing in the choir and enjoying drinks at the Legion across the street. Bruce was known for being a friendly man who always greeted passersby. He was witty and quick with his one line jokes and always loved a good laugh. He was a master around the pool table and had quite the precision with Crokinole games. In his pastime he and Gladi enjoyed many rounds of golf together and curling games with friends. He always had an interest in cars, listened to organ music everyday and loved hosting fun parties for friends and family. An event never went by without Bruce singing his heart out around the piano. Singing brought Bruce such joy, especially if he could share the joy with others singing too. Bruce will be returning home to be laid to rest in Yorkton, SK. Friends are invited to join the family for a celebration of life service and reception on Friday, September 29, 2017 at 1:00 pm at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 165 2nd Ave N, Yorkton.

PLAN OF THE WEEK
PLAN NUMBER 5-2687 GABLED ROOF AND SHINGLED CLADDING With its brick accents, gabled roof and shingled c ladding, this two-bedroom home will make an attractive addition to any neighborhood. Although there is no basement, a loft with a sloped ceiling, located over the double garage, will provide space for a studio, exercise room or extra bedroom. The covered entry leads into a foyer with an 11-foot ceiling. To the left is a coat closet, and directly ahead is the
great room, with a view through large windows onto a covered terrace. A sloped ceiling adds a touch of elegance to the room, and the gas fireplace will cast its warmth into the openplan dining area and kitchen. Plenty of natural light will come through the dining area’s windows, which look out to the back garden, and also brighten the kitchen, which is separated from the great room by an eating bar and prep island. A doorway from the dining area provides access to the
covered terrace. In the kitchen, a spacious corner pantry will provide always-welcome storage space. The master suite enjoys large windows that look out to the back garden, as well as three narrow windows along the side. A sliding “barn door” divides the three-piece en-suite from the master bedroom. A towel cupboard is conveniently located just inside the en-suite, and the shower stall includes a handy bench. The second bedroom, to the left of the foyer, looks out to the front
garden. A three-piece bathroom is located just across the foyer. A mud room doubles as a laundry room, with access to the double garage. Under the staircase to the loft, where the ceiling slopes up to 8.75 feet, is a storage space. There is a display case near the stairway to the main living floor. Exterior finishes include wood shingles with brick accents, painted trip and a decorative garage door. This home measures 40 feet wide and 62 feet deep, for a total of 1,705 square feet of living space, including the 327-square-foot loft. Ceilings are nine feet throughout, unless otherwise indicated. Plans for design 5-2687 are available for $775 (set of 5), $835 (set of 8) and $883 for a super set of 10. B.C. residents add 7% Prov. Sales Tax. A year has passed since I have journeyed through each day of precious memories with my “Buddy” of 59 years and 5 months. There has been no room for tears because we were blessed with a full wonderful life. But tears came close the other day when Sara-Lynn came with an “open crock” of dills. Then Sharon brought a package of garden-fresh baby carrots and a package of small red tomatoes. Ken would wait from year to year for this garden produce to come about. In spring of 2015; Linda made certain that her dad had his very own three potted tomato plants. Also no room for tears when the heart is full to capacity with thankfulness for our “Angels on Earth.” They gave their best for Ken’s comfort, and the list includes everyone that had the good fortune of being part of Ken’s life. The “Thank you” list includes special friends, doctors and surgeons; especially Dr. Zacharuk who started Ken on his life’s medical “menu” of meds. Thanks to the compassionate staff in Malinowski House, including the entertainment and activities which Ken whole-heartedly attended. Especially in Fall when he participated in preparing garden produce from the Nursing Home plots into beetniks, borsht, pickles, etc. Never-ending thankfulness for the “angels” in the Dialysis Unit. Each one of you gave something special of yourselves for Ken’s comfort and ease. Janice, you prepared me with “God inspired words and actions” for Ken’s last few days. Pastor Karen - you were there for us 100%. God Bless you. Also every card of sympathy from friends and family. They are treasured. Thank all of you at Baileys for guiding us to a very special Farewell Day in Ken’s honour. How can one truly express the thankfulness of children! Our three blessings have always been there for us . Each one giving of their own special “talents” of dealing with dad and mom. My final “Thanks” is the closure of each day as a gift and knowing that God has “Tomorrow” planned and Ken is in reunion with other “dearly departed” and is waiting for me.
In Faith and Love - Rita Card of Thanks

Pick the right winter boots for Canadian winters (NC) Do you try to hold winter at bay by keeping your winter boots packed away until the first snowstorm hits? Although denying the inevitable onset of our harshest season may give you a psychological lift, experts say it’s important to get your winter footwear out and thoroughly checked over well before winter arrives with a fury. “Canadian winters are tough — frigid temperatures, ice-covered paths and endless snow and slush can cause serious harm unless you are prepared,” explains Peter Morcom, president of the Pedorthic Association of Canada and a Canadian certified pedorthist. “A quality pair of lined, properly fitted winter boots is essential for winter in Canada.” Although he doesn’t recommend one style or brand of boots, Morcom says these seven tips will help ensure you are wellequipped for everything
winter has in store. 1. Winter footwear doesn’t last indefinitely, typically only one to three seasons. If you are using the same pair of boots as last winter, inspect them closely to make sure there are no rips or cracks that could allow water to permeate. 2. Traction is key. To minimize slipping, select footwear that has a more aggressive tread and a sole made with softer materials such as rubber. If you have balance issues and are concerned about falling, buy cleats that stretch over your boots for extra traction. 3. Only buy footwear that is waterproof, and wear moisture-wicking socks to further protect your feet. Wet feet increase the risk of frostbite and fungal or bacterial infection. 4. Make sure your boots fit properly. Your feet can change size over time and footwear sizes differ from style to style,

so have your feet measured every time and only buy boots that feel comfortable the first time you try them on. 5. If you spend a lot of time outside, choose a pair of boots with a colder temperature range than you need as they will provide you with extra comfort and protection. 6. Don’t buy boots that aren’t supportive. Some fashionable sheepskin styles of boots look cozy and warm but they won’t provide the support your feet and lower limbs require. Stylish, leatherheeled boots should be kept for special occasions. 7. Don’t ask your children to wear hand-medown boots or buy boots with room for them to grow. Boots that are too big or too small will chafe or squish their toes, which will cause blisters and rubs. Find more information at pedorthic.ca.
Sausage on the roof LEAD STORY — Inexplicable The Adair family of Deerfield Beach, Florida, were startled awake on July 15 by the sound of something meaty crashing onto their roof. When they investigated, they found two packages of Italian pork sausage in the side yard, and three more packages still on the roof. The sausages were in bags marked with the name of a land-clearing company in Alabama. Austin Adair called the company to inquire about the wayward sausages, but “the guy had no idea what I was talking about and probably thought I was crazy,” he said, and the mystery remains unsolved. “I would love to know what really happened,” said Jennie Adair, “because it’s just so, so odd.” The Naked Truth Summers are hot in Lawrence, Kansas, and Christopher Steven Carlson, 34, of Riley took advantage of the warm temperatures on July 30 to stroll down a sidewalk in the busy college town in his birthday suit — twice. Police first arrested Carlson around 2 p.m. in downtown Lawrence for indecent exposure, after which he paid his $500 fine and was released. He caught a taxi from the Douglas County Jail back to the downtown area, where he stiffed the driver, left his clothes in the car and resumed his inthe-buff constitutional. Local business owner Meg Heriford said: “Our customers were not alarmed. It was more like, ‘Hey, there’s a naked guy.’” Nakedness does leave one a bit vulnerable, as Travis Tingler, 32, found out on July 16 as he stood unclothed outside his girlfriend’s house in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, shouting and threatening to hurt the people inside. When police arrived, they tried and failed to get Tingler back into his pants, so they handcuffed him. As they struggled to put him in the police car, Tingler picked up a lighter off the ground, and a probe from an officer’s stun gun struck the lighter,
News of the Weird igniting Tingler’s chest and beard hairs. An officer was able to pat the fire out. Nudity, like everything else, is more fun when you can share it with friends. Or so it appeared to drivers along route A66 in Workington, Cumbria, in England, who spied four “shame-faced” men walking along the road wearing nothing but sneakers on July 30. The four “protected their modesty with cupped hands” and appeared to be walking quickly, according to Kathryn Lynn, 50, who drove by with her husband and daughter and snapped a photo of the odd group. “It was a bit of a shock to see,” she said. The Continuing Crisis Out of eight candidates for Detroit mayor in the Aug. 8 primary, half were convicted felons, the Detroit News reported. Three women and one man have convictions including gun crimes and assault with intent to commit murder. “Black marks on your record show you have lived a little and have overcome some challenges,” opined political consultant Greg Bowens. Michigan law allows convicted felons to vote and run for office unless they are currently incarcerated, or if their offenses are fraud-related or constitute a breach of public trust. (Update: None of the felons advanced to the general election.) Ironies In Green Bay, Wisconsin, the Spartans of Vincent T. Lombardi Middle School won’t be playing football this year because of a lack of coaches. Jim Van Abel, principal of the school named after the revered coach of the Green Bay Packers, told parents in a letter that the district had been advertising for coaching positions since April, to no avail. Student Alex Coniff said last year about 55 students played on the school’s two football
teams. (Interestingly, the district was also unable to provide a representative to be interviewed.) The Perfect Name Weedville, PA, more than lived up to its name on July 31 when the North Central Municipal Drug Task Force busted Tiffany R. Potts, 23, and James Michael Dunshie, 30, at their home. The pair were caught with heroin, methamphetamines, hallucinogenic mushrooms, firearms and drug paraphernalia — but, apparently, no weed. The Job of the Researcher Sexing certain species of turtles used to be an invasive process, sometimes requiring surgery on the little guy or gal. But Donald McKnight, a Ph.D. student at James Cook University in Queensland, Australia, has perfected a method that speeds up the process — and presumably pleases the shelled reptile. McKnight uses a vibrator to stimulate the underside of the turtle, which causes a male to “reveal himself,” sometimes in as little as 4 seconds. McKnight did his research in Oklahoma on threatened western chicken turtles. Readers’ Choice Dilworth, Minnesota, police officer Brad Browning suffered a bout of bad luck on Aug. 2 after he pulled over a car with a burned-out headlight. The driver, Stephen Hietala, 27, of Perham, had a warrant out for his arrest. When officers tried to handcuff Hietala, he resisted, prompting one officer to fire his Taser, which missed Heitala and hit Officer Browning instead. Hietala took off running, with Browning chasing on foot. Soon a sheriff’s deputy arrived with a police dog, but as Browning cornered Hietala in an alley, the dog bit Browning instead of the criminal. Officers finally arrested Hietala for fleeing a police officer and drug possession.
