DENNIS - Pauline Dennis, beloved wife of Julian of Yorkton, fell asleep in the hands of God on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre with her husband Julian by her side. She was 57 years of age. Pauline Dennis (nee Spilchen) was born on August 4, 1960 in Yorkton, a daughter of Metro and Annie (nee Wasylowich) Spilchen. As a young child, she grew up on the family farm in the Fone Hill district. In 1966, the family moved to Yorkton, SK where Pauline attended Victoria Elementary School. On July 29, 1978 Pauline was united in marriage to Julian Dennis. Pauline worked in a variety of bakeries and maintained a lengthy career in retail but was fortunate to have stayed home in her early years to raise her three children. She enjoyed gardening, expressing a deep admiration for flowers and also loved the challenge of completing a puzzle. Drawing, travelling and camping with friends and family were among her favourite pastimes, as was spending quality time with her house pets. Pauline cherished the memories she made doing crafts with her grandkids. Pauline was predeceased by her parents, Metro and Annie Spilchen, mother and father-in-law Pauline and Fred Denys, brother Peter (Olga) Spilchen, sisters Madalyn Sterner and Doreen (Walter) Lezon, brother-in-laws John Petrowsky, Carl Petrowsky and dear friend Steve Madetsky. Pauline is survived by her husband Julian; daughter Amanda (Clay) MacLean; two sons Adam Dennis and Chad (Courtney) Dennis; four grandchildren Brooke, Cole, Paisley and Benjamin; brother Walter Spilchen, four sisters Elizabeth Petrowsky, Katie Petrowsky, Evelyn (Allan) Tymko, Agnes (Edward) Zwirsky and brother-in-law George Sterner, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and dear friends. Prayer services were held on Tuesday evening, March 6, 2018 and the Requiem Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Wednesday, March 7, all from St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton with Rev. Fr. Methodius Kushko C.Ss.R. as Celebrant. Cantor, Ed Pindus, led members of St. Mary’s Choir in the singing of the responses. The cross bearer was Brooke MacLean, the epistle-reader was Stacey Mintram. The interment took place in the Garden of St. Luke at the Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Jeffrey Spilchen, Beverly Fookes, Curtis Buscis and Raymond, Donald and Gordon Dennis serving as the casket bearers. Memorials were to St. Mary’s Church. Condolences can be left at baileysfuneralhome.com.

WRIGHT - William (Bill) Walter Wright, of Yorkton, SK passed away peacefully from this life, at the age of 70, the morning of Sunday, March 4. As Bill’s health declined over this past year and during the last few days of his life, he was continuously surrounded and supported by his loving family and friends. Bill’s journey began on June 21, 1947 in Lloydminster, SK. Born to parents Eleanor and Ken Wright, Bill grew up on a farm outside of Lloydminster and was a loving big brother to both Tedd and Greg. Yorkton became home to Bill in Grade 10 where he attended Yorkton Collegiate and met the love of his life. Bill was a kind, generous person who worked so hard to build a life that he loved and valued dearly. As an articling student, he joined his soon-to-be father-inlaw at what was known as Parker Quine in 1965. He then married his love, Vivien, in 1968. From there, he took his passion for numbers and received his Chartered Accountant designation in 1971 and became partner in 1974. Bill continued to work for the same accounting firm for over 50 years. He took great pride in his work and most importantly, he valued the relationships he had with those he worked with. “Colleagues” and “clients” quickly transformed into life-long friendships. He enjoyed being an active member of the community and was proud to call Yorkton home. Bill served as the chair of the Computer Scoring and Results Committee for the Saskatchewan Winter Games held in 1986 and was actively involved for several years with the Yorkton Exhibition Association where he served as president and was inducted into the Senate. He also held various roles with the Kinsmen Club of Yorkton. His contributions were valued and recognized as a recipient of the Distinguished Community Service Award in 2003. A local hockey fan, he also enjoyed serving as Treasurer for the Yorkton Terriers Jr. Hockey Club (2008-2010). Family and friends meant everything to Bill. He was an exceptional husband but even more an amazing father to his two daughters, Audra and Jennifer. Bill sought to instill in his children the importance of helping others, a commitment to family and friends and the power of a kind heart. Through his loving and fun spirit and involvement in the community, he formed powerful friendships that lasted right up until his final days. Bill enjoyed and developed a passion for golfing with his friends in the summer. More recently, he found joy in travelling south in the winter to continue golfing and spending time with close friends. But above everything else in life, Bill loved his grandchildren and spent every moment he could with them--whether it was attending sporting events, music festivals, or just relaxing on the couch with a good movie never missing an opportunity to spend time with Liam and Tate. He also enjoyed Face Time, as well as reading countless books with his little granddaughter Lena. Left to celebrate Bill’s life is his wife Vivien, his two daughters and their families, Audra and Chad and grandsons Liam and Tate; Jennifer and Kelly and granddaughter, Lena; brothers Tedd and Debra and Greg as well as many good friends. Bill was a kind and generous person who treasured every moment with his family and friends. His family asks that you spend time with your loved ones and take pause for just a moment and make a toast to enduring friendships--lifelong and beyond. That is what Bill would wish for you. The funeral service was held on Thursday, March 8, 2018 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Crystal Bailey officiating. Pianist, Shani Apland, led the congregation in the hymns ‘Just As I Am’ and ‘Precious Lord, Take My Hand’. Chad Hoffman read scripture, Liam and Tate Hoffman were the urn bearers. Honourary bearers were Greg and Tedd Wright, Chad Hoffman, Kelly Delorme, Bill Kuspira, Dave Farrell, Don Miskiman, Gord Broda, Howie Fehrenbach and Norm Vance, as well as members of the partners and staff of Collins Barrow. Words of remembrance were given by Dave Farrell, Gord Broda and Jennifer Wright. The interment followed in the Garden of St. Mark. Memorials were to the Canadian Cancer Society. Condolences can be left at baileysfuneralhome.com.

LOVELACE - Violet Alice (nee Zasko). Violet passed away peacefully in Sun City, Arizona (her winter home with her husband since 2001) on Tuesday, February 27, 2018. She was predeceased by son, Kirby (1979); sister, Muriel (2003); parents Rose Milotte (2013) and Samuel Zasko (1951). Violet is survived by her husband of 61 years, Atley; 2 daughters, Karen (Mark Ellis) and Kerri-Sue (John Rajczakowski); two grandchildren, Tanner and Brynn Rajczakowski; sister-in-law, Irene Carlson, brother-inlaw, Archie and sister-in-law, Pat Lovelace and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Violet was born in Jedburgh, SK on August 28, 1936. Her family moved to Yorkton when she was four years old, where she attended elementary school and Yorkton Collegiate for high school. In her youth she was involved with the United Church Youth Club and C.G.I.T and eventually became troop leader. Violet earned her teaching degree at Moose Jaw Teacher’s College in 1955. Violet married Atley Lovelace on July 14, 1956 in Yorkton where they made their home until 1960 when they moved to Pilot Butte, SK. In 1972 they moved to a quarter section of land just east of Regina on Highway #1 where they lived and set up their archery business. Violet also participated in archery tournaments and collected a large number of trophies. She taught elementary school at Burke School in Yorkton and Pilot Butte Elementary School. After Kerri-Sue was born in 1974, Violet retired from teaching to work full-time in their archery business. In 1996 they built a lodge north of Norquay where they spent their summers and ran an outfitting business. Violet was a great cook and grew a huge garden at the lodge. Violet loved to spend the winter in Arizona where she lawn bowled, played mini golf (she loved to beat her competition) and entertained many friends and family. She also loved to travel. She visited every province in Canada and every state in the USA. Violet also went abroad to England, Paris, Sweden, Frankfurt, South Africa, Mexico and the Bahamas. Anyone that ever met Violet would say the same thing, she was an Angel. She loved everyone and everyone loved her. She cared for everyone. From her children to her grandchildren. From her archery customers to her outfitting clients. She always wanted to make sure everyone was happy and made everyone feel like part of the family. She was the hardest working, most loyal person you could ever meet. Violet was an Angel on Earth taken too soon back to heaven. She will be missed by all. A celebration of Violet’s life will take place at a later date in Saskatchewan. In lieu of flowers please make donations to a charity of your choice. Family and friends are invited to sign the online obituary and tributes page at www.reginafuneralhome.ca. Arrangements entrusted to Regina Funeral Home and Cemetery 306-789-8850.

PLAN OF THE WEEK

PLAN NUMBER 2-3772 HANDSOME THREE BEDROOM FAMILY HOME This handsome threebedroom family home includes space on the ground floor for two more bedrooms, as well as a den, a future rec room with a roughed-in wet bar and a space for a three-piece bathroom. A large patio outside the future bedroom will be shaded by the deck above. Entry is through a covered porch into a generous foyer. The den is to the right, with a window overlooking the front garden. A coat cupboard is

located across from the stairway leading to the main living floor. Upstairs, the great room’s bayed-out window enjoys a view to the front garden. A gas fireplace will make this room especially attractive for family activities in the cooler months. The stair-well is railed for safety. Open to the great room are the dining area and the kitchen. The dining area has access through sliding glass doors to a large sundeck, with stairs down to the back garden. In addition, plans include an optional buffet, always welcome for storage and serving.

The L-shaped kitchen configuration, together with a work island, will save steps for the cook. Natural light will flow through the window over the double sink. The master suite, located at the back of the home for privacy, includes a spacious ensuite. An oval soaker tub and glass-in shower offer a touch of luxury. Double basins will ease the morning rush hour. The ample walk-in closet should provide plenty of space for clothing and accessories. The second and third bedrooms, which look out to the front garden, share a bathroom, also

with convenient double basins. A towel cupboard is tucked into a corner of one bedroom, and a linen closet into a corner of the other bedroom. The double garage includes a doorway to the main-floor foyer, as well as a side door. The decorative door features three windows. Exterior finishes include stucco and horizontal siding on the upper floor, highlighted by painted trim. The main-floor exterior includes brick accents, as well as siding and painted trim. This home measures 42 feet by 46 feet for a total of 1,422 square feet, not including the groundfloor area. Ceiling height is nine feet throughout the main floor. Plans for design 2-3772 are available for $695 (set of 5), $755 (set of 8) and $803 for a super set of 10. Also add $35.00 for Priority charges within B.C. or $60.00 outside of B.C. Please add H.S.T., PST, OR G.S.T (where applicable) to both the plan price and Priority charges. Our 49TH Edition of the Home Plan Catalogue containing over 300 plans is available for $15.50 (includes taxes, postage and handling). Family history yorkton branch of

the saskatchewan genealogy society

Fast Forward to the Past

››

Are you interested in exploring your family tree? The Yorkton branch of the Saskatchewan Genealogical Society (SGS) has monthly meetings on the second Tuesday of each month (except for July and August) at 7:00 PM at the Yorkton Public Library. Any interested genealogists are welcome, no matter what your stage of research. You will find fellow genealogists who can offer ideas and advice on how to proceed, file and store your research. If you would like to combine a holiday with genealogy research, please visit the Sask. Genealogy website (w w w.sask genealog y. com), click on the “education” tab, then click on “2018 Salt Lake City Trip” for full details on a bus trip to Salt Lake City with the Medicine Hat Genealogical Society and the SGS. This trip, May 27 to June 3, 2018, will give you six full days to research millions of free-to-access materials. Registration is limited so don’t delay. In genealog y research, there is a vast amount of information online, but there is still a place in your genealogy research for a collection of good reference books. History buffs and genealogists lost a great writer when Mr. Bill Barry passed away in October 2015, but his books are wonderfully informative and entertaining on Saskatchewan history. Of interest to people of Ukrainian descent is the book “Ukrainian People Places”, published in 2001. As well as Ukrainian, this book also includes information on Polish, German, Mennonite, Hutterite and Doukhobor place names that became part of Saskatchewan history, adding more depth to your genealogy research. The book has sections on the various “oblasts” or regions contained in Ukraine, and the Saskatchewan names that came from these locations. For example,

from Ivano-Frankivs’ke (Southern Galicia) comes names like “Jablonow” which was later changed to Wroxton, and Brena which was north-east of Canora. From L’viv, Stawchan was north of Rhein; Mostetz was north of Calder. From Ternopil comes Olesha, southwest of Buchanan; Wolkowetz, east of Sheho; and Chechow, west of Preeceville. There is also Dobrowody north-east of Rama, and Jaroslaw, part of Galicia that is now in Poland. Many are familiar with the country church, the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary that once stood at Jaroslaw, west of Yorkton. Famous place names also came from famous people: St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Park; Mohyla Ukrainian Institute; Kvitka, a post office south of Jedburgh, named for the Ukrainian novelist Gregory Kvitka, and Mazepa, south-east of Canora, named after a famous Cossack leader. This wonderful and informative book is fascinating on many levels: as part of Saskatchewan history, and of great interest to Ukrainian descendants who can add a new dimension to their family research by learning more about where their ancestors settled. The book is an extra-special record of Saskatchewan history because many of the places listed no longer exist. Mr. Barry’s book connects the old country to the new country, enabling us to see the hope and optimism of the prairie’s new settlers, while helping us feel their homesickness and nostalgia for the countries they left behind. This book would be a wonderful addition to your genealogy reference collection. Every family has a story: discover yours with the Yorkton branch of the Saskatchewan Genealogical Society! submitted by Debbie Hayward
