SPELAY - Mr. Andrew “Andy” Spelay of Yorkton entered eternal life on August 21, 2016. He was 80 years of age. Andrew was born August 13, 1936 in the Whitesand District. He attended Beblo School for the early years then continued in Yorkton at St. Joseph’s College. Upon graduation he worked in the oil fields for a short time before pursuing a career as a masonry tradesman which he enjoyed for 40 years. Andy was devoted to family and close friends, always lending a ride or a hand to someone. He especially assisted with caring for our aging parents until the end of their lives. He enjoyed family events, gardening, the family farm, daily walks and getting together with friends. Andrew is predeceased by his father Metro (1997), his mother Mary (2005), brother-in-law Ernie Wozney (2007) and nephew Ernie Dombrowski Jr. (2015). He is survived by one brother George (Rose) Spelay, five sisters, Eleanor Wozney, Sylvia (Paul) Beblow, Olga (Ben) Kotyk, Vivian Dombrowski, Elizabeth Spelay and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be dearly missed. The Funeral Liturgy was held on Friday, August 26, 2016 at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton with Very Rev. Father Bohdan Lukie, C.Ss.R. as the Celebrant. The responses were led by Peter Kobylka, Lorne Stechyshyn and choir members. The epistle reader was Sherry Beblow and the cross bearer was Elizabeth Spelay. The interment took place in St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery, Whitesand District with Claude Kotyk, Wes Kotyk, Rick Kotyk, Peter Wozney, Jodi Lehmond and Nathan Montgomery serving as the casket bearers. Memorials in memory of Andy may be made to St. Mary’s Church Fund as gifts of remembrance. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.baileysfuneralhome.com.
HUSAK - Mr. Peter Husak, beloved husband of Marie Husak of Yorkton passed away at the Yorkton Health Centre on August 11, 2016. Peter was ninety-two years of age. Peter was born in the Wroxton district to Nick and Mary (Lesanko) Husack on June 10, 1924. He attended Loyal School with his older siblings Anne and William until Grade 9 before moving to Calder School to complete Grades 10 and 11. He left home afterward to build engines in St. Catherines, ON during the war before working as a milkman in Winnipeg and a lumberjack on Vancouver Island. He returned to the Calder area in the late 1940’s to work on the family farm. Peter married Marie Kaminsky on October 9, 1949 in the Wroxton Ukrainian Orthodox Church. They had two sons; Terry born in 1950 and Wade born in 1962. After living on the farm, the family moved to Yorkton in 1959. Peter worked in the office for the Municipalities of Wallace and Orkney before becoming a salesman for Sears; a position he held for 25 years. Peter semi-retired in 1982 to become a real estate agent for Century 21 before fully retiring in 1988. Peter’s great passion was fishing. He spent almost every weekend, summer and winter, going fishing. He also loved to garden, planting various vegetables at their half acre “Ponderosa” just outside of town. Peter also liked to travel having visited Alaska, the Yukon, Hawaii, the southeast United States as well as most provinces in Canada. Peter was predeceased by his parents, Nick and Mary, his brother William and his sister Anne (Olineck). He will be remembered by his wife Marie, children Terry (Christine), Wade (Kelly), grandchildren Kevin (Angela), Terrena (Kyle), Nicole and Colin and greatgrandchild Hendrick, as well as nephews, nieces and cousins. WEBER - Albert Edwin, beloved husband of Bertha Weber passed away to his heavenly home on Aug. 19, 2016 at the Yorkton Regional Health Center at 91 years of age. Albert was born April 14, 1925 at his family home to William and Julianna Weber. He attended a country school near Ebenezer and worked on the family farm. Albert loved the Lord and was baptized at an early age in the Ebenezer Baptist Church. He continued to love gospel music all his life. Shortly after he bought his own farm NW of Ebenezer, he was united in marriage to Bertha Reimer July 18, 1949. They moved SE of Springside in 1957 and continued to build their home and family. Albert and Bertha were blessed with five children: Joann, Loreen, Annette, Ken and Allan. Albert was happy living on the farm and working hard. He especially enjoyed going camping with the family and fishing with his buddies. He was pretty proud of catching a 36lb jackfish at Lake of the Prairies. In 1969 the family moved into Yorkton. He worked at the Yorkton Hospital in the laundry dept. He wrote his firemen’s papers and then worked in the boiler room at the Yorkton and District Nursing Home until failing health forced him into early retirement. He had always been a fan of the Yorkton Terriers and went to many games. In 2000, Albert and Bertha moved into their current home at Independent Manor where Albert continued to make friends and enjoy activities at the manor. Albert’s happiest times were with his family, when “the kids came home”. He was proud of all their accomplishments and how the grandchildren were growing up so fast. Albert was predeceased by his parents, William and Julianna Weber, his brother Theodore and sister Lena Minke. Albert leaves to mourn and celebrate his life his wife of 67 years, Bertha; children: Joann (Lorie) Haluke of Regina Beach and their daughter Lori Lynn (Kevin) Ell; Loreen (James) Kostichuk, Yorkton and their daughter Lisa; Annette (Don) Field of Regina; Ken (Erica) Weber of Edmonton and their sons Cameron Weber & Justin (Brandon) Weber and Albert’s precious great-grandchild Hudson Weber; Allan (Teresa) Weber of Yorkton and their children Nicholas and Nicole Weber. side on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at the Pasqua Hospital in Regina. Orest was born in Kelliher, SK on December 12, 1948 to Michael and Mary Derkach. He spent the majority of his life in Yorkton and this was where he considered home. He met Hilda in 1971 and were joined in marriage in 1972, a marriage of 44 years. Hilda was his true love and could always bring out his kindness. They welcomed two daughters to their family - Kim in 1976 and Pam in 1977. His family was dear to his heart and made his life complete. He worked various jobs over the years but especially valued his job at Sacred Heart High School in the Maintenance Department. He had a special relationship with the Sister Servants of Mary Immaculate, the teachers and all of the young adults that passed through the halls. His humour and personality will be remembered. Orest also very much enjoyed being a shuttle driver for David Dedman. This was a perfect fit for his social nature. Even though he did not have the opportunity to complete his own formal education, he valued the importance of education and he instilled this in his children to become independent women. He spent many hours with his eldest daughter, Kim, watching hockey and football, cheering on the Flyers and the Roughriders. In 2004, Orest welcomed Brian as his son-in-law into the family. Even more precious to Orest were the two little girls that made him a Gido - Grace in 2009 and Emily in 2014. He loved his little “cupcakes” and the special relationship that they had. Every time he walked by their pictures in the hallway, this brought a sparkle to his eye, a smile to his face and warmth to his heart. Some special moments for Orest were spending time camping and travelling with his wife, children and granddaughters. He loved touring around Yorkton visiting and going for coffee. Being around people and making new friends brought him great joy. In the later years, Orest and Hilda travelled to Yuma, AZ for the winter where they spent time with family and made new special friends. When he retired, he spent countless hours in his garage making bird houses and forever organizing his numerous tools. He could create almost anything out of the tiniest piece of wood. He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Hilda, his children, Kim, and Pam (Brian) Molnar and his granddaughters, Grace and Emily, his two sisters, Stella (Bob)-nephew Jeremy and Evelyn (Wade)-nephew Kyle and his brother, John. He also had a special relationship with Hilda’s brothers and sisters and their families. He will also be missed by many special friends that he made over the years. Orest was one of a kind and his memory will not be forgotten. You are loved. Rest in Peace. Have an extra dollop of sour cream on your perogies, Dad! The Prayer Vigil was held on Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at St. Gerard’s Roman Catholic Church in Yorkton with Ingrid Prost & Deanna Pellatt presiding. The reader was Kim Merasty and Words of Remembrance were shared by Stella Lee. Allison Kruger accompanied the choir with the singing of the hymns, “You are Near”, “Psalm 27”, “Precious Lord Take My Hand” and “Peace is Flowing Like a River”. The Funeral Mass was held on Thursday, August 25, 2016 at St. Gerard’s Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Franklin Emereuwa as the Celebrant. The readers were Kyle Jasper & Kim Merasty and the Gift Bearers were Hilda Derkach & Sr. Suzanne Kokuruds. Rita Hilbig accompanied the choir in singing the hymns, “Amazing Grace”, “Psalm 23”, “On Eagle’s Wings”, “Be Not Afraid”, “Song of the Angels” and “Though the Mountains May Fall”. The interment took place in the Garden of St. Luke at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Brian Molnar, Blair Jasper, Russ Smith, Scott Gelowitz, Jeremy Lee and Kyle Stachura as the casket bearers. Memorials honouring Orest’s life may be made to The Health Foundation as gifts of remembrance. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.baileysfuneralhome.com.

PLAN NUMBER 1-2671 TWO-BEDROOM RANCH-STYLE This attractive twobedroom ranch-style home is designed with its double garage set at an angle, creating a courtyard effect at the front, with plenty of space for extra parking. The covered entry is flanked by two pilasters with brick bases, and leads into a foyer with a coat closet to the right. To the left is an angled stairway leading to the unfinished basement, included with the plans. The stairway encloses an area open to the floor below, protected by a railing. From the foyer, the great room is directly ahead, with large windows that look out to a covered deck and the back garden beyond. Thanks to the open-plan design, the cozy glow from the gas fireplace will reach into the dining area and the kitchen. The dining area features large windows that look out to the sundeck that is attached to the covered deck. The kitchen boasts plenty of counter space,
as well as a large work island and a corner pantry. The sink is positioned at an angle to take advantage of daylight coming through two windows. This arrangement provides a triangular space between the windows that would be perfect for knickknacks or a house plant. The master suite looks out over the back garden for privacy, and includes a roomy walk-in closet. The en-suite bathroom includes an oval soaker tub, with its own window, as well as a shower stall and double basins. The second bedroom looks out to the front garden and is adjacent to a three-piece bathroom. The linen closet is conveniently located between the master suite and the second bedroom. The double garage offers access to the laundry room, which includes a row of coat hooks and a coat closet. A doorway leads to a covered porch, allowing the room to double as a mudroom. The exterior has a stucco finish with brick accents. Pilasters framing the garage door echo those at the front of the home.
This home measures 71 feet, nine inches wide by 60 feet, 11 inches deep, for a total of 1,563 square feet. Plans for design 1-2671 are available for $755 (set of 5), $815 (set of 8) and $863 for a super set of 10. B.C. residents add 7% Prov. Sales Tax. Also add $35.00 for Priority courier charges within B.C. or $65.00 outside of B.C. Please add 5% G.S.T. or 13% H.S.T. (where applicable) to both the plan price and postage charges. Political correctness a growing infection As Canada becomes more and more infected with the politically correct, I have found myself sitting back and really paying attention to the outcome of special interest groups offending other special interest groups. How do you handle something that offends someone who isn’t a white English speaking male? There was a situation in Toronto where a professional woman had her day ruined by a polite Muslim man who entered a room and shook hands with the other men around the table, but refused to do so with the woman, stating religious reasons. The woman admits the Muslim man was, otherwise, very polite and she had no other beef with him. Still, his refusal to shake her hand was deemed to be (by her) as a statement that she was less of a person because she’s female. Whose rights are superior here? Career Opportunities KEY CHEVROLET Cadillac Buick GMC Inc. (Yorkton), a Member of the Key auto Group, is seeking a Parts Manager to provide superior levels of customer service. Well, the answer is that we put the screws to the group who isn’t offended by anything once again as the proper protocol would be to refuse shaking everyone’s hand. The Muslim man is supposed to announce he can’t shake the woman’s hand for religious reasons but he recognizes her as an equal so therefore there will be no hand shaking whatsoever. Wonderful. I don’t mean to come off crass, but this issue of a Burkini ban in France is silly. Look, I don’t care what you wear to the beach. The reality, however, is that if you are not in swim gear you look dumb. That applies to burkinis, traditional nun outfits (I don’t even know what they are called), or dopes who show up and lay on a towel while wearing their jean jacket. It all looks silly. Yes, we all have rights and that includes the right to look dumb. I’m going to need some help understanding, but I have a difficult time rationalizing how a Muslim woman is

Stackhouse Soapbox allowed to wear a hijab while in the workforce as a police officer. It is now allowed for Muslim Canadian women to be cops and wear a hijab while doing so. While I guess this is okay, I am wondering how it’s determined which beliefs you adhere to and which ones you disregard. To me, if a Muslim woman insists on being an RCMP officer and wants to wear a hijab then I’m to assume she’s a strict practicing religious person who obeys what is preached to the letter of the law. Now, I stand to be corrected on this, but in some of the research I’ve done I have also come across rules that say a Muslim woman should dress conservatively. Well, the RCMP
uniform can be quite form fitting and reveal our bodily assets. I’ve also read that a woman should not talk in a sweet voice that could tempt a man into sin. So, I’m suspecting this tactic of being friendly to get a criminal to admit to his crimes is not an option. I also read a woman isn’t supposed to seek advice from non-Muslim men or insist on being in an environment where the majority of the men are not Muslim. Again, the one thing I have found when it comes to Islam is that there are a ton of interpretations out there so maybe some of what I’m saying is wrong. But, it is confusing to me. Why dig your heels in over the hijab, but not worry
about a lot of the other things? I know it seems like I’m picking on the religion, but I can recall growing up in a house where my mom was a strict Protestant. She believed listening to rock music was a sin. Wearing earrings was a sin. Dancing was a sin. Working on Sunday was considered a sin too, but you can bet if she refused to do so that it wouldn’t be long before her employer found a reason to have her released from her job and there would be no recourse. San Francisco 49ers quarterback (hopefully soon to be ex-San Francisco quarterback) Colin Kaepernick refused to stand for the national anthem on Friday night and he says he will continue to sit during the anthem as a show of support for those who do not receive freedom, liberty, and justice. While some have criticized Kaepernick, there is a left wing opinion that Kaepernick should be commended for his
stand. Let’s not forget, however, that Tim Tebow was just about, universally, condemned for saying a prayer before games. And, let’s not forget that while the St. Louis Rams were not penalized for their “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot pose to support Black Lives Matter, the Dallas Cowboys have had their request to pay homage to slain police officers refused by the NFL. Yes, the politically correct left wing have taken over professional sports now too.
I’d like to end this week by saying Thanks to the City Of Yorkton for their efforts this summer on improving our streets. To the people whining about how hard it is to navigate around the construction, I have no sympathy for you. I’m happy work is being done and I hope it continues for a few more summers as we try and get caught up on this impossible task.

Small biz optimism improves but hiring plans hit record low Recently, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) released its latest monthly Business BarometerŽ, which reveals optimism among small business owners in Saskatchewan improved in August to an index of 54.9, up 3.8 points from 51.1 in July. This index remains below the national average index of 59.8, and is 7 points below August of last year (61.9). “August brought back some measure of Saskatchewan’s small business optimism, with an index of 54.9, an average reading for 2016, said Marilyn Braun-Pollon, CFIB’s Vice-President, Prairie & Agri-business. “Hiring plans, however, are negative with only six per cent of business owners looking to hire full-time - a record low reading in the province. Another 11 per cent plan to reduce staff. The general state of business health has also seen a small drop with only 38 per cent of entrepreneurs saying their business is in good shape, while 15 per cent say it is poor. Canada’s small business optimism took a bounce back upward in August. CFIB’s Business Barometer Index erased a weak July reading, rising more than two points to 59.8 — almost the same as its June level and the second-highest monthly mark registered since May of 2015. Sentiment
still has plenty of room to improve though, with the index running five points under its 2010-14 averages. “There were notable gains in five provinces and dips in the five others,â€? said Ted Mallett, CFIB chief economist. “The good news is that the declines in four of the five other provinces were very slight, about a point or less. The exception was Newfoundland & Labrador, which plunged by more than 10 points from July’s index.â€? Improvements were widespread across the provinces — rising in five, including Prince Edward Island (70.5), Quebec (64.9), Ontario (62.6), Nova Scotia (62.3) and Saskatchewan (54.9). Of the provinces that saw index declines, four of five were very slight — about a point or less in each case: British Columbia (65.6), New Brunswick (63.0), Manitoba (56.1) and Alberta (45.6). The steepest drop off in optimism, however, was in Newfoundland and Labrador (37.8). Results and the full report are available at: www.cfibfcei.ca/english/barometer Highlights of the Saskatchewan Business Barometer for August: • 38% of businesses in Saskatchewan say their overall state of business is good (40% nationally); 15% say it is bad (15% nationally). • 6% of Saskatchewan businesses plan to
increase full-time employment in the next 3-4 months (19% nationally) and 11% plan to decrease employment (13% nationally). • Insufficient domestic demand remains the main operating challenge (52%), followed by management skills/time constraints (31%). • Major cost pressures for small business include: tax, regulatory
costs (47%); wage costs (46%); insurance costs (39%); and bank account and processing fees (36%). Measured on a scale of 0 and 100, an index level above 50 means owners expecting their business’ performance to be stronger in the next year outnumber those expecting weaker performance. According to past results, index
levels normally range between 65 and 70 when the economy is growing at its potential. August 2016 findings are based on 603 responses, collected from a stratified random sample of CFIB members, to a controlledaccess web survey. Data reflect responses received through August 14. Findings are statistically accurate to +/- 4.0 per cent 19 times in 20.

Inner Cycle Bailey Popovich and staff welcomed newcomers to Yorkton’s first boutique-style cycling class by holding an open house complete with pizza and wine. Interested parties toured around the building on Myrtle Friday night, exploring class options and checking out the workout area. Inner Cycle stands out from the average fitness centre as its classes are held in the dark, with party lights and loud music to get riled up to. With this party atmosphere, the new business hopes to make high intensity exercise more fun, as well as to hinder in-class judgement with its dark atmosphere. Those interested in signing up are encouraged to download the Mindbody app, available for both Android and Mac users. Payment and class schedules are available through it.
