HARPER - Charles Edward (Ted) Harper. Ted passed away in Sidney, BC on Friday, August 5 in his 80th year. Born in Yorkton, SK on March 7, 1936 to Nell and Jim Harper, a brother to Rusty (Doreen) Harper and Dawn (Donald) Moncur. He tried it all... delivering newspapers, flowers for his Uncle’s Flower Shop and Texaco bulk oil for his Dad. Racing stock cars, radio announcing for CJGX Yorkton, TV News for CJOB Winnipeg and back to CJGX Melville Radio with the “Rolling Home Show” from 4-6pm. He travelled Northern Saskatchewan with Diversey Chemicals, moved to Victoria, BC with CJVI Radio, built houses, owned a CAT on tracks for moving dirt, painted ships for Yarrows, bartended, was a Realtor, owned Gulf Cruises and pleasure boating and was a fixer of everything for anybody. He just couldn’t sing or bake cookies! He was a friend to many and loved by his family... a King for his Princess daughter Shannon, a “Buppa Love” to granddaughters Bronwyn (Cody) Reiner and MacKenzie Reiner and to their little boys Lucas and Nolan...and missing him forever, after 55 eventful years, his wife Sharrin. There will not be a public gathering but donations in Ted’s memory could be made to: The Palliative Care Unit, Saanich Peninsula Hospital, 2166 Mt. Newton Xrd, Saanichton, BC. Messages to the family can be written online at Legacy.com MUIR - Bonnie Muir was born on April 22, 1953 at the Yorkton Union Hospital, a daughter of Leslie and Joyce Muir. Donalee Charlotte (1963-2015) and Darrell Mark (1962-2015); I give you this one thought to keep. I am with you still - I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain.. When you awaken in the morning’s hush, I am the swift, uplifting rush of quiet birds in circling flight. I am the sift stars that shine at night. Do not think of me as gone - I am with you still in each new dawn. Author: Mary E. Desperate to forgive Jones rule breaking The Saskatchewan Roughriders have been fined closed to $100,000 this season by the Canadian Football League and there are fans who are upset at the image portrayed by Chris Jones, the man in charge of the football operations. To this, I can only say that people shouldn’t be surprised. Jones has a reputation of doing whatever is necessary to put a winning product on the field and other people’s feelings, integrity, and other
such fair play rules are not items that rank high on his list or priorities. Jones has rubbed a lot of people the wrong way and, therefore, there are some powerful officials out to get him. If he can turn this ship around, the fans will be very forgiving. I’m just not sure he’s going to be successful. How do you blame a coach when your field goal kicker can’t split uprights? How do you blame the coach when the players fail, over and over, to convert short

instead. Ottawa is a less safe place today. But, that’s okay. It has a more wide cultural representation. A Texas mother has applied to the local school board to have her child use a female washroom when he/she starts kindergarten in the Fall. Apparently, the child proclaimed at the age of three that he is really a she. Do any of us really have the mental capacity at the age of three to decide this? I mean, at the age of three if your child wants to be a Walmart Greeter when they grow up, do you say, “Okay, sounds great. Let’s do everything as a child to prepare you for this career and you can’t change your mind. To me, I feel this is where leadership comes into play. If you have a child with questions about sexual orientation, it’s incumbent upon you to provide the tools to help that child be the best possible man or woman later in life. Obviously, if certain issues persist, then by all means be supportive. But, to just back off at the age of three because you think you are empowering the child is ridiculous. If anything, you are confusing the kid even further and I may even make the case you are an unfit parent. Nice person mentions to: Jack Long, Myles Thorpe, Darren Balaberda, Tracy Turner, and Asad Qazi.

unturned looking for guys. And, it’s not like you can point to some out of work kicker who could have helped this team last week. Some folks claim Jones was too quick to purge the team of veterans. Well, this team won three games last year. Precious few players from last year would help them win this year. And, none of the players Jones got rid of are tearing up the league. But, two of them that the previous regime deemed expendable (Zach Evans and Keith Shologan) are. It really needs to be a crime for people who drop off animals to fend for themselves in the wild. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: children and pets put their trust in us to look after them. When we betray that, they don’t have the capability to find another caretaker or parent. There were more violent protests in the United States over the weekend after a police involved shooting. This time, the officer who did the shooting was black. So, I’m not sure what plausible reason
there would be for looting and vandalism. It’s to the point I don’t even pay much attention to it anymore. The Black Lives Matter people who claim to have good intentions clearly do not. Unless I’m missing something. We see so many guilty criminals get away with murder because a judge will claim they couldn’t make the conclusion that guilt was proven ‘beyond a reasonable doubt’. Yet, Making A Murderer subjects Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey have been in jail for years despite plenty of doubt. Last week, it was announced Dassey’s release has been ordered by the court within 90-days. Avery should get out too. For those who watched the documentary and are still skeptical because of the slant towards the defense, you have to admit the picture of doubt is still convincing. I am not saying Avery didn’t do it, but there sure is enough there to make me feel someone else could have. And, for that reason, both Avery and Dassey should be free men. An employee with the Ottawa Police Service has quit after she rejected a Somali applicant based on his background check. The employee was ordered to overlook the background question marks out of sensitivity to the fact this person is of Somali origin. She refused and has resigned her position

Canadians of all political persuasions care about climate action. Watching Canada fall behind the rest of the world over the past 10 years has been deeply disturbing to many. We became climate laggards. We yearn to be leaders. The hope that Canada would act on scientific evidence and contribute to climate solutions was bolstered when Justin Trudeau became prime minister in late 2015. He quickly announced he would personally go to Paris for the December climate negotiations. He gave his new environment minister, Catherine McKenna, the expanded title of “minister of environment and climate change, and sent her to COP21 with instructions to make Canadians proud. He even convened all the premiers before Paris to review the latest climate science. Minister McKenna took a decisive position in the Paris negotiations, making Canada the first industrialized country to raise the stakes in the treaty negotiations. She rightly took the position that the world had to move to hold global average temperatures to no more than 1.5 C above pre–Industrial Revolution levels rather than the 2 C set during earlier negotiations. Once Canada moved, the world followed. By March, Prime Minister Trudeau had assembled provincial and territorial premiers once again, to start work on a plan for carbon pricing and advancing clean technology. In June, he joined the presidents of Mexico and the United States in committing to begin reducing fossil fuels in the electricity grid, and to work together throughout North America to reduce methane (a potent greenhouse gas) in oil and gas production, among other pledges. So, how much bet-
DAVID SUZUKI
Science Matters ter is Canada’s climate target than before the Liberals swept to power? Astonishingly, not one bit. Despite all the activity that has taken place, Canada is ignoring its greenhouse gas emissions reduction goal. The Paris Agreement doesn’t include individual national promises. Those have been made and tabled with the UN climate secretariat. Canada’s target was tabled in May 2015 by former environment minister Leona Aglukkaq. It’s the weakest in the G7. Of course, the previous government made few plans and took no steps to hit its mark. But the Harper government’s goal of reducing emissions 30 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030 is still Canada’s target. So while the premiers are building a plan, they’re building it to hit the old, weak target. Canada’s leadership in getting the world to agree to hold global average temperature to 1.5 degrees will come to nothing if our current levels of commitment remain in place. In fact, the impact of the aggregate of actions pledged to date by all nations — assuming all countries hit their targets on time — will not be to hold global average temperature to 1.5 C. Those actions will not hold temperature to 2 C. The impact of hitting current targets on global average temperature ranges from 2.7 to 3.5 C. Unless the current round of targets is withdrawn and replaced by more ambitious actions — something called for in the Paris Agreement
as “ratcheting up — we’ll lose any chance of keeping Arctic ice at the pole, which will set off feedback loops that will accelerate global warming. Cascading events of greater severity will become unavoidable. These levels of global average temperature increase are beyond catastrophic. Low-lying island states will be condemned to sinking below the rising sea level. Increasingly persistent and severe droughts and floods will force millions from their homes and have devastating impacts on food and water supplies. And we will run a growing risk of passing thresholds in the atmosphere that amount to a point of no return. Human civilization cannot withstand runaway global warming. Given the scale of the threat, how do we get our new prime minister to do the right thing? We have to demand it of him. We have to put the question of Canada’s domestic target back on the table. We have to call out those who claim Harper’s target is too tough to meet. Now is when we need to encourage, cheer and pressure our prime minister to step up — for my grandchildren, for his children and for all of us. I believe he can do it. But we have to speak up. If enough people raise their voices, government representatives have to listen. David Suzuki is a scientist, broadcaster, author and co-founder of the David Suzuki Foundation.
