BISSCHOP - Ann Bisschop (nee) Kolodziejski, third child of Walter and Amelia (nee Stegienta) Kolodziejski, was born on May 30, 1930 on Sec. 1, Tp.32 Rge.10, W, 2ND Saskatchewan, better known as The Flats. On August 14, 2017 at the Yorkton & District Nursing Home, she peacefully entered into the Kingdom of Heaven greeted by many family members. She was 87 years young. Ann grew up on the farm with her two brothers, Henry and John and her sister, Mary. She received her education at Dunrobin School. She worked hard throughout her life on the farm and eventually met the love of her life Norbert Bisschop. They entered into the union of marriage on May 21, 1949 and were blessed with one son, Joe, in 1950. Their first home was in Tuffnell, SK in the living quarters of the hardware store they ran together. Later, Ann ran the store alone while Norbert worked as a mechanic in Foam Lake. She was a very strong and confident woman. They then moved to Wadena and lived there for a short time where Norbert continued to work as a mechanic and Ann was a full time mom. In 1955 they decided a move to Yorkton would give them better opportunities. Norbert gained employment as a mechanic at Korb Motors and Ann started her career at the Bus Depot restaurant called “Uneedalunch”. She worked there, eventually becoming the manager, for 17 years. In 1972, Ann started on a new path in life becoming a grandmother to Teri followed by Jeff and Joelle - the pride and joy of her life. She loved attending many of the activities they were involved in. Taking them camping gave Norbert and Ann much pleasure. Joe and Cheryl probably enjoyed that even more - LOL. Ann was overjoyed with the birth of each great-grandchild as well. Again, attending their many various events from Ukrainian dancing to hockey to archery, etc. Ann took her cooking skills to the Radar Base at Orcadia after leaving the Bus Depot to continue doing a job she truly enjoyed. Shortly thereafter a restaurant and garage came up for sale and they both knew this business would be a great opportunity for them. So on April 1, 1976 they became the proud owners of Skyline Texaco. Their son Joe also worked there as a mechanic. Soon the many customers became one big family, keeping the place busy because as we all know, Ann was an amazing cook. She whipped up big pots of soups, made pies and delicious specials each and every day, doing what she loved to do. On October 31, 1990 they both retired. The big Skyline family missed them very much and had to find other places to have their meals and get their vehicles repaired. Everyone said it just wasn’t the same - and it certainly wasn’t for Ann, Norbert or Joe as well. She even turned down an offer she received from a valued customer who wanted to purchase a restaurant for her to run so they would be able to continue enjoying her wonderful cooking. What a compliment that was! She loved to play cards, curl, sew, knit, crochet, snowmobile and go camping. Ann looked forward to the holidays and always had fun at Halloween. She also loved cooking and making cabbage rolls and perogies. She always made butter tarts for Jeff for his ice fishing trips. She had a passion for dancing which she did a few times each week right up until her surgery in January. In February of 1994 her husband, Norbert, passed away, leaving a void that was filled by her granddaughter, Teri, moving in with her for a while. That was very helpful. Teri loved it as much as “GG”. Ann became very involved at St. Gerard’s Parish cooking for numerous functions. She enjoyed helping with the perogy and cabbage roll bees. She also was an active CWL member and gave selflessly of herself to help others in need. On March 20, 2015 Ann’s beloved granddaughter was taken from her - this devastated her and the entire family and turned their worlds upside down. Her heart was broken in two. But her strong faith in God, deep devotion and family support helped her journey through the pain. We all know that God and our angels, Norbert and Joelle took her by the hand and welcomed her to her eternal home in Heaven. No doubt in our minds this is true, as our entire family has had many signs from them that offer comfort and hope through coins, feathers, butterflies, dragonflies and our beloved robins. Ann was predeceased by her husband, Norbert; her parents, Walter and Amelia Kolodziejski; brother-in-law, Tom Halyk; sister-in-law, Bernice Kolodziejski and granddaughter, Joelle Bisschop Lucas. She leaves to mourn her passing and cherish her memory her son, Joe and his wife, Cheryl (nee Chillog); granddaughter, Teri (Craig) Herman; grandson, Jeff (Jennifer) Bisschop and Matt Lucas; great-grandchildren, Brady Herman, Jayden and Jaxon Bisschop and Ty and Jersey Lucas; sister, Mary Halyk; brother, Henry and his wife, Lucy and brother, John as well as numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives and good friends. She will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by all who had the blessing of knowing her. “We not only loved her, we liked her too”. “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass…It’s about learning to dance in the rain!” The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks for all the kindness, prayers and support given them by family and friends during this very difficult time. The prayer vigil was held Thursday, August 17, 2017 from St. Gerard’s Roman Catholic Church in Yorkton, SK with Mary Bybliw and Jerome Niezgoda serving as lay presiders. The reader was grandson, Jeff Bisschop and granddaughter, Teri Herman shared a tribute to Grama. The accompanist, Chris Fisher and the church choir, led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, “Be Not Afraid”, “Psalm 103”, “Peace is Flowing Like a River” and “Amazing Grace”. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Friday, August 18, 2017 also from St. Gerard’s Parish in Yorkton with Father Louis Kim Nguyen officiating. The readers were Craig Herman and Tom Halyk, the cross bearer was great-grandson, Jayden Bisschop, the gift bearers were Vickie and Eugene Duchnitski and the general intercessions were led by Marcella Davis. The accompanist, Chris Fisher and the church choir, led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, “This Day God Gives Me”, “Psalm 62”, “On Eagle’s Wings”, “You Are Near”, “Song of the Angels” and “How Great Thou Art”. The Cremation Committal followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with grandson, Jeff Bisschop, serving as the urn bearer. “When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure”. Mass offerings or donations in Ann’s memory may be made to the New Horizon Senior Centre in Yorkton, a charity of your choice or honouring her by doing “a random act of kindness”. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

SKINNER - Willene was born in Manitou, MB on February 14, 1922, the only child of Harold and Evelyn (nee Henderson) Goldsmith. After spending the first few years of her life on a beautiful farm near Manitou, she moved to Winnipeg, during the Depression, where her parents ran a boarding house. Her parents moved to Morden before the war and Willene completed high school at the town’s Maple Leaf Collegiate. Willene then entered the nursing program at the Port Arthur General Hospital in Thunder Bay, graduating in 1943 before transferring back to the Morden hospital where she served as assistant head nurse for the surgical suite. She married George Skinner on January 26, 1946 in Winnipeg. She and George soon welcomed their first son, Leigh and their second son, Brent, followed by their daughter Laurene several years later. The family lived in Carman, MB and Winnipeg before moving to Yorkton in 1958, where George helped establish CKOS TV. Last but not least, Janice, their youngest daughter, was born in Yorkton which completed their family. Willene was a loving wife and mother who had a major role in raising her four children as George was very involved with his broadcasting business. Over the years, her family expanded to include twelve grandchildren, twelve greatgrandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Willene served in many voluntary organizations, including the United Church Women and the Sweet Adelines. In George’s retirement, they travelled widely around the world and greatly enjoyed their winter vacation home in Tucson. Blessed with a warm sense of humour and an outgoing personality, Willene had many friends and continued to expand her social circle even in her later years. She was much loved and will be both sorely missed and fondly remembered. The funeral service was held Friday, August 18, 2017 from Westview United Church with Reverend Brian Mee officiating. Willene’s children shared words of remembrance. The Westview Church Choir and the Yorkton Community Choir sang with Laurene Jemieff as the organist and Shani Apland as the pianist. KELLER - Curtis Robert Keller, beloved son of Michael and Cindy Keller, passed away suddenly on Thursday, August 10, 2017. He was 32 years of age. Curtis was born on October 6, 1984 in Yorkton, SK. He was the youngest of three boys. Curtis attended elementary and high school in Yorkton, graduating from YRHS in 2002. After graduation, Curtis spent time on the oil rigs with his brother, Justin. He then ventured to Vancouver where he worked for a scaffolding company - recalling scary stories of scaffolding hi-risers to his family. Curtis loved the family farm. For the past nine years, he helped his Dad and brother, Scott, through seeding and harvest. From sun up to sun down and even beyond, Scott and Curtis would always get the job done. His easy-going personality, drive and determination made it less stressful during those long hours. Curtis would always pull into the yard, greeting the kids with a toot of the horn on the grain truck - something that the kids loved and anticipated from their uncle. In the off season of farming, Curtis had a passion for Construction. The bigger the equipment, the better. He most recently worked for Ungar Construction. Curtis also had a love for cooking and you’d find him working evenings and weekends at Big Zees Pizza. He loved being creative and hot sauce was always one of his favourites. Curtis also loved his motorcycle and enjoyed the freedom of the open road. He had a passion for music at a young age and loved playing his guitar. You’d often find him singing his tunes in his free time, or even performing for his niece and nephews. He loved to have fun with them and had the patience and kindness that every child looks for in an uncle. Curtis was always there to help his family and friends. Whenever you needed him, he was a phone call away. He was extremely loyal to his family and would do anything for them. We are so very grateful for the unconditional love and support he has shown us. Curtis was predeceased by his grandparents, Katherine and Mike Keller; his uncle Ron Keller and his aunt Sharon Courtney. Left to remember him are his mother, Cindy; his father, Michael (Carla); his brothers, Scott (Samantha) and Justin (Sharon); his nephews Gage, Ashton, Hunter, Jett, Kaleb and Ethan; his niece Sadie; his Aunt Joy (Kerry) and cousins Kaylan and Sara; along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. The funeral service was held on Sunday, August 20, 2017 from Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Rev. Louis Kim Nguyen and Crystal Bailey officiating. The reader was Carla Schinkel and the urn bearer was Justin Keller. Memorials may be made to the Yorkton S.P.C.A. or to any animal rescue charity. Are statues of George Washington next to come down? In the wake of the racial violence in Charlottesville, Virginia; the last week has seen a number of statues come down in confederate states. The significance is that key political figures in those States resisted the abolishment of slavery and they tried to preserve political liberty for white people. It is possible that the first President of the US, George Washington, will be a target as well. Washington was a slave owner for 56 years and it remains to be seen as to whether extremists will want to force the removal of any landmarks that feature him. Washington is on Mount Rushmore and human rights activists could seek to have the mountain imploded. I also feel that, within the near future, the city of Washington DC will undergo a name change. Here in Canada, I could see activists moving a lot quicker than their American counterparts. I don’t pretend to know who the vile offenders are from history; but I’m sure they’ll be pointed out to me at some point. The one person I was curious about is Lord Stanley. Could there be something in his past that may result in the changing of the name of hockey’s most coveted trophy? About a year ago, I suggested the Winnipeg Jets may be in trouble with their team name because they are named after fighter planes and it’s possible human rights activists could determine the Winnipeg NHL team is promoting and glorifying war. We could see the day where the Jets name is deemed offensive and they’ll have to undergo a change. Don’t laugh. Just this week, ESPN apologized for holding a fantasy football auction on tv because it could have been interpreted as a slave auction. Yes, we’ve fallen that far in the land of offensive things. An expansion East Coast Hockey League team in Portland, Maine is set to call their club the Wild Blueberries. Serious. At the moment, I think that one should be safe. I discovered a man by the name of Larry Elder this week. He’s a black man who has his own radio show in California; but I hadn’t heard of him until I saw a video of him debating a white television host. Elder schooled the guy so badly that the host admitted after the interview that he was ready to change his mind on many racial issues. The big one, an epidemic of police shooting black suspects was very much debunked by Elder. I don’t pertain to agree or disagree but if Elder’s facts are believed to be true, there needs to be a different dialogue than what we are having. In 2015, Elder said 965 people were shot by police in the US. 4% were white police officers shooting unarmed blacks. In Chicago, the city is made up of 33% black, 33% white, 33% hispanic; yet 70% of homicides are black on black and 75% of those are unsolved. Elder would like to see Black Lives Matter take up that cause before they even look at police officers mistreating black people. In 2015 in Baltimore, a young man named

MIKE STACKHOUSE mikestackhouse@hotmail.com

Stackhouse Soapbox Freddie Gray passed away while in the back of a police vehicle as he was being transported. Six officers were charged in relation to his death but all were found not guilty or had charges dropped. The matter resulted in a major protest being held; but Elder argues Gray was going to get proper justice and the media used the case to stoke the fire of racism. Elder points out Maryland is run by Democrats, the top two police officers in Baltimore are black, the Mayor is black, and the Attorney General is black. Elder also cited stats from the last thirty years that indicate police shooting black people has declined by as much as 75%, while the percentage of whites being shot by police has remained constant over the same period of time. I think people like Elder and Charles Barkley, who said over the weekend that he could care less about statues, can be key figures in bridging racial divide if they are given a platform. In Calgary, Pride parade organizers have banned uniformed police officers from taking part. Their authoritative symbol and weapon can be a trigger and traumatic for individuals who face oppression. It’s likened to PTSD. The other group banned by this organization seeking all-

inclusiveness (oxymoron for those non English majors) is the provincial United Conservative Party. Their application to take part was rejected. Instead, its members are required to take a 3-hour workshop and then they can, perhaps, take part next year. One has to wonder if a group that used to complain when certain politicians didn’t

participate and can now ban the same politicians from participating hasn’t achieved its goal of allinclusiveness and, therefore, is no longer needed. My involvement in this community is very limited so I’m not qualified to give much of an opinion; but the feedback I’ve received is that organizers of these types of parades don’t reflect the attitudes of the vast majority of LGTBQ people, who just want to live normal lives and not draw attention to themselves just like straight folks. Nice person mentions to Brandi Zavislak, Terry Fazakas, George Swaenepoel, and Ray Walker.
