HRYNIUK - Mrs. Lillian Hryniuk of Yorkton, beloved wife of the late Tony Hryniuk, entered eternal rest on July 24, 2017 at Yorkton Regional Health Centre. She was 91 years of age. Our Beloved Mom and Baba, Lillian, was born on September 29, 1925 in the Mikado district to Anne (Schur) and Jacob Greba, she was the middle child of twelve children. After attending Wisnia School in the country, furthering her education in Winnipeg, MB, Lillian returned home to help with family responsibilities. It was during this time she met Tony Hryniuk and on January 10, 1949 they were united in marriage. Lynn Lake, MB , became their home for the next 10 years where they started their family, later settling in Yorkton. Lillian’s legacy in life is her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They remember her for her love of life, her optimism and her ability to find good in every soul. She leaves her family with many cherished memories and examples of her humour, kind and giving nature and her appreciation for anything that any one of her family or others did for her. She would thank them from the “bottom of her heart” and sometimes a “million times” even when she was suffering a great amount of pain during her recent challenges with her health. Her humble nature is something her children and grandchildren have strived to accomplish and attain and this is something they have strong memories of. As long as everyone else had, she did not need, she always felt rich with those accomplishments. Lillian enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking for family and all special occasions. She also enjoyed reading from newspapers to novels - one of her favourite saying was “this should be published”. She cherished her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They all have special moments they shared and many loving memories. Predeceased by her husband Tony Hryniuk in 1991; parents Anne and Jacob Greba; 5 brothers and 3 sisters; 4 sister-in-laws; 1 brother-in-law, Lillian leaves to cherish her memory, her children; Pearl (Barend) Blommaert, Bill (Gayle) Hryniuk, Tony (Carol) Hryniuk, 8 grandchildren; Carol Leslie, Melodee (Malcolm) Chlan, Cohen Blommaert, Dylan Blommaert (Sara), David Hryniuk, Chad Hryniuk (Mayah), Joel Hryniuk (Ashley), Jade Hryniuk, 3 great-grandchildren; Hunter Leslie, Spencer Renfrow, Emery Renfrow, along with brothers; Sam Greba, Frank (Carol) Greba; sister Elizabeth Greba and numerous nieces and nephews. Vigil Prayers were held on Thursday, July 27, 2017; Melodee Chlan offered the readings and words of remembrance were conveyed by Hunter & Carol Leslie. The Funeral Mass was held on Friday, July 28, 2017 at St. Gerard’s Roman Catholic Church in Yorkton with Rev. Father Francis Hengen as the Celebrant. Lorraine Lysak accompanied Members of St. Gerard’s Choir in the singing of the hymns. Serving as cross bearer was Carol Leslie. Readings were given by Melodee Chlan and Hunter Leslie. Bill & Tony Hryniuk served as the gift bearers. The interment followed in the Canora Town Cemetery with Bill Hryniuk, Tony Hryniuk, Joel Hryniuk, Chad Hryniuk, Hunter Leslie, Malcolm Chlan, Barend Blommaert, David Hryniuk, Dylan Blommaert, Cohen Blommaert, Frank Greba and Sam Greba serving as casket bearers. Memorials honouring Lillian’s life may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.baileysfuneralhome.com.

ONCHULENKO - It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of James Joseph Onchulenko on July 23, 2017 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. He was 77 years of age. James was born on March 21, 1940 in the Stornoway district of Saskatchewan, a son of Mike and Dora (nee Eremko) Onchulenko. He spent several years farming in the Stornoway district but due to health issues James had spent the last 20 years at the Anderson Lodge in Yorkton and then at Orkney House of the Yorkton & District Nursing Home. He is survived by a brother Pete, sister Margaret & numerous nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by his father Mike, mother Doris, sisters Mary, Rose, Eileen and by brothers John & Nick. We would like to thank all the staff at the Anderson Village (Orkney House) for all the care given to James over the years. We would also like to thank the staff at the ICU of the Yorkton Regional Health Centre for the care given to James up to his passing. A graveside interment took place on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at the Yorkton City Cemetery.
ACHTEMICHUK Mrs. Nell Achtemichuk, wife of the late Fred Achtemichuk of Calgary, formerly of Yorkton, passed away on July 21, 2017 in Calgary. She was ninety-three years of age. It is with sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and friend. We will miss her generous caring and smiling presence. Nell was born on December 2, 1923 on her family farm near Hampton, SK. Nell attended Bridok School and following worked with the Wishart family and their store in Hampton, SK. In 1944, Nell married Fred Achtemichuk and joined his family on their farm until 1948 when Fred and Nell moved to their own farm near Veregin, SK where Robert and Mavis were born. In 1954, Nell and Fred moved to Saskatoon while Fred attended barbering school then back to Rhein and on to Yorkton where Fred setup his barbering practice. Nell created comfortable homes during these moves that finally saw them building a house on Lincoln Avenue in Yorkton that was the site of an amazing garden that delighted the grandchildren and many family gatherings for the Zaharia and Achtemichuk families. Nell worked as a retail sales person for MacLeod’s Hardware, Logan Drugs and Fletcher Drugs. Nell’s favourite was working in the china area of Logan Drugs where she collected china and glass for our home to add to the festive moods of the family gatherings. Nell and Fred golfed together in retirement. Much to her delight and astonishment Nell scored a hole in one on the eighth hole at York Lake Golf Course. They enjoyed social gatherings and playing cards with good friends. Nell especially loved visiting or hosting their children and grandchildren while creating fabulous meals. Nell is survived by her sisters: Mary (Weinmaster), Ann (Watson) and brother Fred Zaharia; three children: Robert (Angie), Mavis (Gordon) and David (Karen); and her four grandchildren: Sasha, Dana, Emma and Alex. Nell was predeceased by her husband Fred on January 12, 2015; and by her siblings: Dan, Bill & Michael. A visitation for family and friends was held on Sunday, July 30, 2017. A Celebration of Life Service was held on Monday, July 31, 2017 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre in Yorkton with Crystal Bailey, B.Th Certified Funeral Celebrant officiating. KLAUSE - Ev (Evelyn) Klause died suddenly on January 25, 2017 at the Royal Masonic Care Home in Vancouver, BC after four days of gently administered palliative care. She is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Elrose and Verna Klause, son-in-law Peter, grandchildren, Darla, Skylar and Ethan Budden and Gregory and Summer Kinash as well as sisters, Frances, Betty, Dorothy and Gladys, brother, Lawrence, brother-in-law, Art Klause, their spouses and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Norman, her beloved son, Timothy, her parents and her sisters, Rose and Vera. Ev was born on March 6, 1927 to Gus and Elsie Mantay and was raised on a farm close to Springside. She worked on her parent’s farm, attended bible school in Edmonton and worked in Yorkton prior to marrying Norman Klause in October of 1952. They farmed together just outside of Saltcoats for over 50 years until Norman’s death in 2005, living on the same farmyard for most of those years. In 2006 Ev moved to Vancouver to be closer to Verna and her family and to avoid the “beastly” Saskatchewan winters. Her formative years gave her a lifelong appreciation for sports and sporting competitions. After becoming a resident of Vancouver she traded her passion for the Saskatchewan Rough Riders and Yorkton Terriers to the Vancouver Canucks. Ev was determined and resilient. Although she was only able to attend school until Grade 9, she completed adult equivalency classes after her family no longer needed her attention. She supplemented the family farm income by driving a bus on a Saltcoats school bus route, working in the laundry department at the Yorkton Hospital and preparing meals for road crews in the Saltcoats area. She was passionate about providing hospitality, especially with her food. Coffee and something to eat were always on offer to anybody who dropped by. Ev loved to travel and would often visit her daughters wherever they happened to be and accompany them on longer trips. Norman was content to go on shorter day trips with her in Saskatchewan. Until shortly before Norm’s death, they often travelled country roads selling Watkins products, but mainly driving and visiting friends and acquaintances. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2010 and in the subsequent years required increasing assistance with day to day life. Even with this devastating disease she was able to show her concern and compassion for those around her, alternately brighten or frustrate the people who gave her assistance and helped her remember her life was meaningful. At an earlier memorial service in Vancouver the Chaplain of the Care Home lovingly reminded us that Ev was one of a kind. Although her memory was often clouded during her final years, we and those who were around her, will remember her sense of humour and her ability to compensate for her illness by constantly documenting the small details of her life. She may not have remembered what she ate or if she had taken her medications, but everything was recorded in the notebooks she kept, so that she could refer to them. Especially important to her in the final years of her life was her never faltering religious faith. Cremation has taken place and her family has arranged a Memorial Service to celebrate her life with all her friends and family members at Heritage Baptist Church in Yorkton, SK on Friday, August 4, 2017 at 1:30 pm, to ensure that she will miss all of the Saskatchewan winter that she was so averse to. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society Canada (www.alzheimer.ca). Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

Mary was born to Nick and Lena Romanchych on May 7, 1934 on the family farm at Strong Pine, SK. She was raised in the Prince Albert area, the eldest of nine children, including four brothers and four sisters. Mary worked as a legal secretary for several years in Prince Albert. On November 3, 1956 she was united in marriage to Terry Lukash. Together the couple raised a son, Lawrence and three daughters, Janet, Valerie and Barbara. Mary worked for several years as a waitress and bartender at the Balmoral Hotel and Yorkton Hotel in Yorkton. Her hobbies included gardening, sewing, paper tole, cooking and baking for family and friends, building wicker chairs and making wine with her husband (Terry) of 50 years. Most of all Mary loved to care for and support her family in every aspect of life. She adored her family which included six grandchildren and one great-grandson. Mary was loved by all who knew her and will be dearly missed. Mary was predeceased by her parents, Nick & Lena Romanchych; her father & mother-in-law, William & Olga Lukash; husband Terry; sister Pauline Neurohr; nephew James Prokipchuk and two children Judy and Darcy. Mary is survived by children Lawrence (Tamara) Lukash of Sydney, Australia, Janet (Neil) Lawrance of Yorkton, Valerie (Dwayne Clayden) West of Calgary and Barb (Greg) Kobylka of Yorkton; grandchildren Bonnie Lawrance of Calgary, Amy (Luke) Fernandes of Calgary, Kristen (Kyle Brown) Lawrance of Kelowna, Kyle Kobylka of Calgary, Amanda (Justin Stupak) Kobylka of Saskatoon, Matthew Lukash of Sydney, Australia; great-grandson Carter Ben Stupak of Saskatoon; sisters Ann Eisler of Surrey, BC, Rose (Jack) Prokipchuk of Winnipeg, Donna (Tom) Provan of Fort St. John, BC; brothers Joe (Polly) Romanchych of Surrey, BC, Walter (Marlene) Romanchych of Mission, BC, Richard (Dianne) Romanchych of Langley, BC and Larry (Pat) Romanchych of Kelowna; as well as many nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Ron Lukash, Dave Lukash, Gordon Danylchuk, Robert Danylchuk, Kelly Lukash and Leo Lucash serving as the casket bearers. Memorials honouring Mary’s life maybe be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society or St. Mary’s Church as gifts of remembrance. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.baileysfuneralhome.com.

ANDERSON - Emma Katherine (“Blondie”) Anderson. It is with sadness and cherished memories that the family of Emma Katherine “Blondie” Anderson announce her peaceful passing at Aspen Bluffs Villa on July 24, 2017. Born at Theodore to Chris and Annie Hansen on August 26, 1917, she was one month short of her 100th birthday. She was predeceased by her husband, Sam, the love of her life and “best of all” dancing partner, her brother, Fred, sister, Dorothy and infant granddaughter, Carmen. She lived her whole life with a focus on her family and friends. Emma will be so missed by daughter, Madge (Rod Biddell) and their children, Ian (Heather), Michelle and Erin and son, Clark (Delores) and their children, Lindsay (Trent Ferguson) and Wes (Susi). She also leaves behind in love ten great-grandchildren, sister-in-law, Betty Schmidt and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Emma was involved with the Theodore United Church from a young age, starting with Sunday School, CGIT and Youth Group, on to singing in the choir and directing it for several years. She sang in the choir until about age 93, still with a strong voice and an ear for harmony. Emma was an avid gardener and always enjoyed her beautiful flowers. She absolutely loved babies and we heard the phrase many times “Oh, isn’t he or she so cute!”. She was a member of the Creekside Woman’s Institute for most of its years. Well known as “Blondie”, she was an active participant in the Beaverdale, Creekside and Theodore communities. She eventually took art lessons and began to enjoy painting. That became a true hobby and in her later years she decided to teach oil painting classes, first at the Station and then at the Manor. Emma and Sam were married in October, 1941 and stayed on the farm until 1976, when they moved to Theodore and their new home. There they became involved in town activities and continued their enjoyment of curling, getting together with neighbours and especially dancing whenever the opportunity presented itself. Emma was a happy soul. After Sam’s passing, she stayed in the house until, in her usual practical and proactive way, she made the decision to downsize and move to Southview Manor in Theodore. She lived there contentedly until finally needing the services of Aspen Bluffs Villa in Yorkton at age 95. She left us with a lasting legacy of values: community service, hard work, resilience, generosity and most of all, commitment to family and pride in their accomplishments. Mom was well loved by the staff at Aspen Bluffs and we wholeheartedly thank the staff there for their compassionate care and extra TLC these past four years. A Memorial Service to Celebrate Emma’s life will be held at a later date. Friends so wishing may make donations in Emma’s memory to the charity of their choice. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

PLAN OF THE WEEK
PLAN NUMBER 7-3891 TWO STOREY, THREE BEDROOM DESIGN An impressive great room spanning the width of this three-bedroom home is a stand-out feature of this two-storey design. Framing the entrance to the great room is an archway with decorative posts. The nine-foot ceiling emphasizes the feeling of spaciousness. Optional entertainment units are indicated on either side of the gas fireplace for those who
would like a place for their stereo, books and other media accessories. The large kitchen has plenty of features to satisfy the cooks in the family. A corner pantry and a central island with a raised eating bar add to the work area and storage space, Corner windows brighten the sink area. The morning room/ breakfast nook fits into a bay window and a french door opens on to the partially covered terrace, where steps lead down to the back garden. French doors from the
foyer open into the den – a bonus room that could be used as a home office or hobby space, depending on the family’s needs. The laundry room includes access to and from the garage. A twopiece powder room and a coat cupboard complete the main floor layout. Up the U-shaped staircase, the master bedroom boasts a bay window with a built-in seat, as well as a good-sized walk-in clothes closet. Two ensuite plans are offered: A five-piece en-suite bathroom, with a tub as well as a shower stall, or
one with a larger soaker tub with a tiled surround and a single rather than a double vanity. The second and third bedrooms share a threepiece bath. A linen closet is located nearby. On the exterior, decorative window shutters, wooden shakes in the gables, a covered porch and stone accents combine for an exceptionally attractive facade. The house measures 40 feet wide and 55 feet deep, for a total of 1,973 square feet of living space, plus the unfinished basement included with the plans. Plans for design 7-3891 are available for $775 (set of 5), $835 (set of 8) and $883 for a super set of 10. B.C. residents add 7% Prov. Sales Tax. Also add $35.00 for Priority courier charges within B.C. or $65.00 outside of B.C. Please add 5% G.S.T. or 13% H.S.T. (where applicable) to both the plan price and postage charges. Our NEW 49TH Edition of the Home Plan Catalogue containing over 400 plans is available for $15.50 (includes taxes, postage and handling). Rest in peace Caryn Chef Dez on Cooking
by Gordon Desormeaux www.chefdez.com In my career as a certified Red Seal Chef, I am not only a Food Columnist, but also a published Author, Culinary Instructor, and get hired as a Host/MC for various events. However, one of my greatest accomplishments is also being a Culinary Travel Host, and I owe the honour of having that title to a very special lady: Caryn Zimmerman. We first met years ago after one of my live cooking shows. She was a huge supporter of me, and became a friend of mine, ever since. With her vivacious personality and expertise in the travel industry, along with my passion for food and people, we eventually became a great business team as we launched Chef Dez Culinary Tours. Many people have combined food and travel together, but no one did it quite like us. We had a knack for it, and our travel guests agree. Our first Chef Dez Culinary Tour was in 2014 to Savannah GA. We wanted our tour guests to experience southern hospitality at its finest all while being surrounded by incredible history from one of the oldest cities in the USA. Twentyfour guests traveled with us for 8 days, and I am now friends with many of these guests still to this day. This inaugural tour really opened my eyes to what Caryn can accomplish when it comes to travel and making sure our guests are looked after. In 2015 the Chef Dez Culinary Tour took us and our guests through the state of Texas. We visited many cities, stayed at incredible properties, travelled to wineries, ate true barbecue, and much more. All of us left pieces of our hearts in Texas because of this amazing tour. Again Caryn shined. My favorite time with her was at the Texas State Fair: the world’s largest state fair. Our last Chef Dez Culinary Tour was to the Auctions

Canadian province of PEI in the fall of 2016. Here, with our tour guests, we got to experience not only the beautiful autumn colours of PEI, but also to experience east coast living at its finest. The pinnacle part of this trip was staying at the property of Chef Michael Smith, The Inn at Bay Fortune, and having a private cooking event with Chef Michael. Although this trip was culinarily focused around oysters and lobster, Caryn didn’t let her shellfish allergy stand in the way. Her motto was always “This is not about me. This is about our guests.” Unfortunately, Caryn passed away on June 27, 2017 after a short, but fierce battle with cancer and it is in her honour that I dedicate this column. Anyone that knew Caryn, knows how full of life she always was. Caryn was the type of person that made any party or gathering an event that no one would soon forget. From her flip-flops, to her sunglasses, wild outfits, and her zest for life, everyone knew when Caryn was there. Thank you Caryn for not only being a friend and colleague, but also as a mentor. You have taught me so much over the years, and was always there for me. I miss you terribly and would give anything to hear your laugh and see your smile again. If I knew I was going to lose you so soon, I would have tried to spend even more time with you. Because of this loss, the Chef Dez Culinary Tours are postponed indefinitely. At this point I can’t even imagine doing them again without her. The community of Abbotsford BC, where she resided, and everyone that she came across in her travels, would agree that we have lost a very special person. Rest in peace Caryn...
