DANESEWICH Stephanie Danesewich was born on November 9, 1923 in the Ituna district of Saskatchewan; a daughter of Anna (nee Novak) and Peter Hrycewich. She was raised on the farm and received her education at Beaverside School. On June 8, 1941 she married John Danesewich and together they farmed and raised four children, spending 54 1/2 years together. In 1978 the couple retired from farming and in 1979 moved to Yorkton. In 2001 Stephanie moved into the Clements Court, where she enjoyed helping others in a family like atmosphere. As her health declined she became a resident of the Yorkton & District Nursing Home. Stephanie passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 17, 2016 at her residence in Orkney House. She was 92 years of age. Stephanie was a very hard worker. Her home and garden were immaculate. Her motto was ‘Do it right or not at all’. When young, we were inclined to think ‘not at all’. However, that taught us many life lessons from which we still benefit. In her younger years, Stephanie loved to make perogies and cabbage rolls, head cheese, (best ones ever!!). She was always busy cleaning, painting, redecorating with endless amounts of energy. In her later years, she enjoyed doing ‘Search for Word’ and a book to read was always on her lap. She dearly loved her children and grandchildren, always looking forward to their visits, phone calls and face time. Stephanie was predeceased by her parents, Peter and Anna; husband John; son John; and son-in-law, Walter Petrowsky. Her sisters: Sophie (Mike) Krywulak, Katherine (Alex) Ryan, Pearl (Sam) Senchak, Ilene (Paul) Rehaluk, Nellie & Julia in infancy, Caroline, Mary and Ann Hrycewich; brothers: John, Bill, Mike (Ann) Hrycewich. She leaves to mourn her passing and to celebrate her life her daughters: Ilene Petrowsky, Patricia (Bob) Holowenko, Theresa (Allan) Sikorski. Grandchildren: Gary (Bonnie), Daniel (Leanne), Darrell (Lynn), Glen (Sonia), Richard and Conrad Petrowsky; Gayle (Les) Cain, Don, Rob (Denise) Holowenko; Edwin (Val Marie), Stacey (Shawna) Sikorski, Curtis (Ami) Brown. Great-grandchildren: Cindy, Jordan, Randy, Taylor, Nolan, Jessica, Kristen, Tasmin, Eathan, Kira and Chase Petrowsky; Rhiannan and Adam Cain; Grace (Brad) Eamer, Cole and Tana Holowenko; Vanessa and Austin Sikorski, Gage, Garret and Griffen Brown. Step greatgrandchildren: Tara (Stan) Van-Sechem; Jana (Curtis) Manovich and Lorren Cain. Great-great-grandchildren: Devin and Gage Petrowsky. Step-great-great-grandchildren: Maya, Skylar and Shelby Manovich. Also a sister-in-law, Caroline Danesewich, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Prayer services were held on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 and the Requiem Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Thursday, April 21, 2016, all from St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton. Rev. Fr. Joakim Rac was the Celebrant. Cantor, Ed Pindus, assisted by members of St. Mary’s Parish Choir led in the singing of the responses. The epistle-reader was Jessica Petrowsky, the cross bearer was Gayle Cain. Honourary bearers were Bob Holowenko, Robert Holowenko, Cole Holowenko, Allan, Edwin, & Stacy Sikorski, Nico Palladino, Les Cain, Gary, Dan & Conrad Petrowsky and Orest Hrycewich. The interment followed in the Garden of St. Luke in the Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Don Holowenko and Glenn, Richard, Nolan, Kirsten & Darrell Petrowsky serving as the casket bearers. Condolences can be left at www.baileysfuneralhome.com. Memorials were to St. Mary’s Church. The family wishes to thank Dr. Lawale, the staff of the Yorkton Regional Health Centre and the staff at Orkney House for the special care they gave our mother. Also special thanks to Fr. Joakim Rac, the Cantor, Ed Pindus, St. Mary’s Parish Choir, St. Mary’s Cultural Centre and Bailey’s Funeral Home.

GROFF - Doris Groff, of Saskatoon and formerly of Yorkton, wife of the late Wilfred Groff, passed away at St. Paul’s Hospital, Saskatoon on April 15, 2016. Doris was born on the family farm in the Theodore District on July 15, 1927. She was the third child of William and Dora Essar. She attended elementary school at Creekside. She often mentioned that in order to get to school, she sometimes had to roll over snow banks that were too big and soft to walk over! She attended high school in Theodore and then went on to Normal School to become a teacher. Doris taught at Winthorpe, Parkland, Crossroads, Caldervale and Crewkerne Schools. In 1949, Doris married Wilfred Groff and the couple farmed in the Crossroads district for a few years. By the time they moved off the farm in 1956, they had four children, Raymond, Wayne, Wendy and Lyle. With Wilfred away working on construction of the TransCanada Pipeline in Ontario, Doris started teaching at Crewkerne School in the fall of 1957. She was now a full-time teacher, raising four young children, almost single handedly while Wilfred was away during construction season. As well, she upgraded her Normal School Teaching Certificate to the new Teacher Certificate standards through many years of University correspondence courses and attending many six week summer school sessions during the summer vacation period. Most years her “angels” got to go along. When Crewkerne School closed in 1970, Doris, Wilfred and their family moved into Yorkton. Doris worked at ladies dress shops in the city. In 1976, Doris and Wilfred built a new home in Yorkton, providing lots of sweat equity themselves. In 1981, because of Wilfred’s job transfers they moved to Ponteix and Fort Qu’Appelle in the same year. After Wilfred’s death in 1984, Doris retired to Yorkton in 1986. Then she started travelling across Canada and the USA on many bus tours until health issues no longer allowed her to travel. In 2013, Doris moved to Saskatoon where she resided at Bethany Manor until her death. In her younger years, Doris liked curling. She loved old time dances and dancing. She especially loved her cars and driving. She had a very hard time accepting why she couldn’t drive anymore and even when Doris no longer had a car, she still renewed her Driver’s License and CAA membership. Doris spent many hours sewing, knitting and crocheting. She was a great cook and her pies and pie crusts were the best. Doris embraced technology and her computer was a daily part of her life researching whatever interested her at the time - mostly good - and then printing it out. Paper company shares are going to take a dip now! Doris was predeceased by her parents, William in 1948 and Dora in 1968; her brother, Metro in 1984; sister, Mary in 1996; infant brother, Johnny in 1930; her husband, Wilfred in 1984 and son, Lyle in 2006. Left to cherish her memory and celebrate her life, are her son, Raymond and his wife, Linda; her son, Wayne and his wife, Teresa; her daughter, Wendy and her husband, Don Werner; her daughterin-law, Corinne Groff as well as eight grandchildren and twelve greatgrandchildren, Rae (Hank) Bolsterli (Oliver, Madelyn and Samantha), Tammy (Werner Matlschweiger) Groff (Emilie), Susan Groff, Christien (Ray Rabu) Groff (Terava, Eiza and Aerlin), Christopher (Laurel Stang) Werner (Paige, Hope and Bronwyn), Kyle (Laurel) Werner (Cassandra and Alexandra), Jonathon Groff and Sarah Groff. Funeral Services were held on Friday, April 22, 2016 from the Chapel of Christie’s Funeral Home in Yorkton, SK with Kathy Novak serving as the Celebrant. Special taped music selections included “Hallalujah” by Jeff Buckley as the processional, “Young Love” by Sonny James, “I Believe in You” by Don Williams and “You Are My Sunshine” by Johnny Cash as the recessional. Following a luncheon in the Gunn Reception Room at Christie’s Funeral Home, the Interment Service took place in the Springside Town Cemetery with Doris’ grandchildren, Rae Bolsterli, Tammy Groff, Susan Groff, Christien Groff, Chistopher Werner, Kyle Werner, Jonathon Groff and Sarah Groff as well as her niece, Margaret Kosminsky serving as the casket bearers. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

A happy 99th On April 23, 1917 Mary “Effie (Dean) and her twin brother Phil came into the world. Born in Yorkton on a farm that is now East Broadway, Effie was raised by a busy housewife with her siblings Godfrey, Gladys and Barry. Effie’s father managed the CO-OP Creamery and was transferred often. Effie began her education in Yorkton continuing in Foam Lake, Unity, Tisdale and finally graduating in Swift Current. After graduation Effie returned to Yorkton. In 1938, Effie married George K. Jamieson. For 26 years, Effie worked as the secreSubmitted Photo tary to the three Mayors of Yorkton. W. E. Fichtner, Allan Bailey and finally John Wytrykush before retiring. Effie and George raised two sons, Dean and Brian. Effie credits her longevity to her mother, who lived to be 102. She claims to be merely following in her footsteps! Happy Birthday, Effie. Thank you for sharing your birthday with all of us.

MIKE STACKHOUSE mikestackhouse@hotmail.com

Stackhouse Soapbox at a Yorkton business on the day she disappeared. There was no mention of the time of day she was at this business and the business wasn’t named. To me, there is no harm in saying the name of the business and the time of the day she was seen. I think people will have an easier time registering their memories to say, “Oh yes I was there at that time. Let me try and think and see if I recall anything that could be helpful. Instead, you have thousands of people who visited many local businesses and how in the world would any of us know if we saw anything strange? Generic clues and a worded release done in code isn’t helpful. That’s not to lay blame at the feet of anyone, personally, but rather my own criticism of the system. To me, the only thing that matters here is a missing child who needs to be found; and, frankly, I don’t care who’s toes get stepped on if it is in the best interests of finding her. I don’t know the family and I can’t imagine the anguish they are going through. I don’t know how to help, aside from sharing every single post I see on Facebook. If there is more we can do, let’s get it figured out and rally to do the best we can to help. Consider this my offer. A Winnipeg mother is being investigated by Child and Family Services after someone reported her for child neglect. Apparently, this woman committed a cardinal sin by allowing her three children (ages two, five and ten) to play in the back yard while she was inside watching from the living room. Manitoba’s Child and Family Services Act states a child twelve or older can be left at home unsupervised, but there is no mention about the back yard. A Winnipeg psychologist says that in the age of the Internet, everyone feels as though they should give an opinion and it’s easier to be passive aggressive and file a complaint with CFS then it is to go knock on your neighbour’s door to make sure the kids are being supervised. I can’t imagine this mom losing her kids. I compare it to the matter in Yorkton years ago when a mom left two children inside a

turned off vehicle in -30 temperatures while she went inside the casino to enjoy a night out. She never lost her kids. An off the record comment to me was that the mandate of CFS is to keep families together, even if kids are left to freeze in an unattended cold vehicle. It’s a weird world when you consider the rights of Karla Homolka, now known as Leanne Teale (wonder who footed the bill for that identity change), trump those of the citizens of a city in Quebec. Reportedly, Homolka is living amongst the good folks of Chateauguay and is often seen dropping and picking up two of her three kids from the local public school. This has caused some to be alarmed that this, potentially, dangerous individual lives amongst them. How would you feel if you had a teenaged daughter and lived in the same area as Homolka? Would you be a little anxious? Don’t you think as a citizen who has never been in trouble with the law that you should have the right to know she’s in your area, or is it more fair to protect Homolka from possible harassment by letting her live wherever she wants and just keep it quiet? To me, just because you have served your time, doesn’t entitle you to a clean slate at life. There should be consequences you are forced to live with whether you are in jail or not. I’m also intrigued as to the type of ‘normal law abiding’ man who would be attracted enough to Homolka to want her to have his children. Turns out to be her lawyer’s brother. Mike Duffy was exonerated on all 31 of his criminal charges last week and while that means he is, legally, in the clear; it doesn’t mean he acted with proper ethics. The fact that these senators claim to not know the rules just doesn’t hold water with me. Here we have people with above average intelligence who have filed expenses their entire lives and they say they are unsure what constitutes a legit expense that they can reclaim.
