DIDLUCK - Audrey Debra Ann Didluck (nee Spilak) October 2, 1955 - November 9, 2015. Peacefully, after a courageous battle with cancer, Audrey, at the age of 60, passed on Nov. 9, 2015. She is survived by her husband Neal, sisters Pat Krakolinig (Hugo, Sandy) (Yorkton): Sharon Jordon (Jessica) (Winnipeg) and Judy O’Donohue (Gerard, Joe, Daniel, Karen, Sarah) (New Zealand). Pre-deceased by parents Peter and Lena Spilak (nee Yaremko) and brother-in-law Bob Jordon. She will be greatly missed. Audrey attended Yorkton Regional High School, then worked in Regina and Yorkton as a cook. She always kept family as a priority and moved back to Yorkton when needed to care for her elderly parents. More recently as a Commissionaire for the Yorkton area. She enjoyed meeting different people and in the summer walking her route. She was a “foodie”- loved recipes, cooking, freezing and canning. She was cheerful and loved to laugh and kept in touch with her many friends and family on the phone. She had a great sense of humour and great faith. She also gardened and enjoyed her pets. In respect for her wishes she will be cremated and her ashes scattered in the spring. Her family wishes to thank everyone for the wonderful caring support she received while receiving treatment and at the end of her life. Special thanks to Dr. Roodt, the Kinsmen society and to the staff on 1st East, Team 2 at Sunrise Health Centre. LAUBE - Erwin Robert Laube went to be with his Lord and Saviour on Sunday, November 8, 2015. He passed away at the Kamsack Nursing Home, Kamsack, SK at the age of 87 years. Erwin was born on June 23, 1928 in Yorkton, SK, son of Adolf and Lydia (nee Fandrich) Laube. He grew up and received his elementary education in the Eden School district (north of Saltcoats, SK) and finished secondary school at the Yorkton Collegiate. Erwin then worked on the family farm and also found employment in the construction industry. He became proficient as a cement finisher. This became his trade and his work took him to various projects from Ontario to the west coast. Erwin also had an interest in all things mechanical. If it moved, he often took it apart to see how it worked. Many things he fixed, others never worked again, but whatever he did Erwin always deserved an “E” for effort. While growing up, much time was spent with family and relatives, especially the Neumanns and Fandrichs, as well as fellow schoolmates. He had many friends and enjoyed socializing. Erwin retired to his farm in the 1990’s and then moved into Yorkton in 2013. Always a believer, Erwin accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour in the 1990’s. He had a strong faith in his Lord, attended church regularly and loved to read his bible. Erwin was a kind, considerate, caring person with a good sense of humour and shall be missed by many. Erwin was predeceased by his parents, Adolf and Lydia; brothers-in-law, Allan Weinmaster and Donald Angus as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins. He is lovingly remembered by his sisters, Jean Weinmaster and Freda Angus; his nephews, Gary (Nancy) Angus and Ken (Joanne) Crosson; his niece, Judy (Wesley) Becker and their families as well as many cousins, friends and neighbours. The Funeral Service was held on Saturday, November 14, 2015 from the Chapel of Christie’s Funeral Home in Yorkton, SK with Pastor Gerald Wagner officiating. The organist, Carla Laycock, led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, “Beyond The Sunset”, “The Old Rugged Cross” and “How Great Thou Art”. Mrs. Edna Richardson shared words of tribute, eulogy and special music. The Interment Service followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Walter Neumann, Jr., William Neumann, Norman Fandrich, Arnold Toth, Wilbert Matechuk and Ed Sek serving as casket bearers. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

GILBERT - Florence Emma Gilbert began life in Rhein, SK, one of twelve children born to Anna (nee Cookhouse) and Pastor Fred Becker. Life was not easy being from a family of twelve but being an identical twin to Freda, they must have had hilarious times together, trying to confuse parents, school teachers and probably an occasional date. Florence was musical, she played the guitar, piano & fiddle. She loved to sing as well. She met Lincoln Cherry, a widower with two sons. Lincoln then asked his sister-in-law Sylvia if Florence was right for him. They were married in the summer of 1950. Their family grew to five in the years to come. Florence, a great woman of faith was also an excellent homemaker, looking after everyone on the farm, including grandpa Cherry, brother-in-law Frank and hired hand Percy, plus her five children. She was a hard-working woman who could cook, bake and cut up and wrap a side of beef. She was proficient in sewing, crocheting, knitting, gardening & canning. In the evenings she would play hymns on the piano, she was active in the Tonkin United Church Women’s Aux and the Tonkin Curling Club, baking pies, dainties or bread for the bake sales, teas and bonspiels. Her nephew Roxby would ride his bike from Yorkton to the farm (7 miles) every Thursday for aunt Florence’s fresh baked bread. Her door was always open for family & friends to come for a visit, sit & chat awhile. Christmas was a special time, there was always a house full of family & friends. In July of 1964, Lincoln suddenly passed away, this left the family heartbroken. In 1967 she decided to move into Yorkton with the girls and was employed at the Yorkton & District Nursing Home as a cook. She kept her faith and cheerfulness, always keeping the best intentions of her family in mind. Florence worked until 1971, when she was united in marriage to Ross Gilbert of Tonkin. The couple resided on the Gilbert farm and celebrated 34 years together until Ross’ passing in 2005. Florence then resided in the Queen Elizabeth Court & the Gladstone Residence before coming to the Yorkton & District Nursing Home. Predeceased by a son Elwood; brothers Bill, Jon and Alvin Becker; sisters: Pauline Fandrich, Dorothy Weibking and Kae Cox. She will be lovingly remembered by her children: Helen (Art) Bilous of Yorkton; Lois (Alvin) Mosell of Wynyard; Nelson Cherry of Frontier, SK; Dale (Myrna) Cherry of Tonkin; daughterin-law Yvonne Cherry of Churchbridge; grandchildren: Todd of Yorkton, Trent of Calgary and Tim of Yorkton and their families. Also sisters: Freda Baldwin, Miriam Roemmich, Eleanor Gabert and Betty (Ken) Belsher; by her brother Ken Becker, numerous nieces, nephews and her many other relatives and friends. Thank you God for our mother, who taught us values, courage & love. Her love for us was so great and her faith keeps us going and always will. We love you mom always. The funeral service was held on Monday, November 16, 2015 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre. Crystal Bailey, B.Th. officiated. Organist, Amanda Buhler led the congregation in the singing of the hymns ‘Amazing Grace’, ‘In the Garden’ and ‘The Old Rugged Cross’. The interment took place in the Garden of St. Mark with Alvin Mosell, Bruce Mitchell, Ray Dorn, Scott Burkell and Todd & Trent Cherry serving as the casket bearers. Condolences may be left at baileysfuneralhome.com. Memorials to Kinsmen Telemiracle would be appreciated by the family.

Mervin received his early education at Elite School near Stornoway, followed by St. Joseph’s College in Yorkton. After graduation, Mervin worked as an orderly at Yorkton’s Airport Hospital, General Hospital and the Yorkton Union Hospital where he eventually met his future wife. Extension Board, Crime Stoppers and his willingness to lend a hand without hesitation. Time to renew Trek love View from the Cheap Seats is kind of an extension of the newsroom. Whenever our three regular reporters, Calvin Daniels, Thom Barker and Randy Brenzen are in the building together, it is frequently a site of heated debate. This week: Is Tiger Woods finished as a professional golfer.

Not soon enough

About the only negative thing I can say about a new Star Trek television series is it is not coming soon enough. When the news first appeared on Facebook, my first reaction was to verify it was not a hoax. Sure enough, CBS Television has announced there is a new series in the offing, but not until January 2017. That’s a lot of anticipation and opportunity to backfire as expectations build up in the imaginations of Trekkers—I’m told that’s what we now like to be called, so I guess I am not really one because I could not care less. I also do not go in for any of the spin-off crap like comics, novels and you would not catch me dead in costume at a convention. Nevertheless, I have been a fan since the original series first went into syndication in Canada in the early 1970s. And, I saw every feature film in the theatre on opening day up until the reboot series started in 2009. So, yes, I am excited, only there really isn’t much to be excited about. All CBS is saying at this point is that it will feature new characters who will continue the mission of “seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.” General Employment Looking for an online business? VIEW FROM THE CHEAP SEATS

I had kind of hoped it would be a spin-off of the new franchise, but getting Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto to do a TV version was probably wishful thinking. The good news is that since Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, the franchise has not produced a small-screen series that, in my opinion, was worth watching so the bar is not that high for Star Trek: 2017. Yes, I know that is sacrilege to Star Trek: Voyager fans, but meh. And it has to be better than Star Trek: Enterprise, doesn’t it? Anyway, I will be tuning in for sure. Here’s hoping! - Thom Barker

High time

You are never quite sure about the validity of many posts on Facebook, so when I first read one proclaiming a new Star Trek television series I was leery. There have been delightful rumours floating around before, including one where Michael Dorn would reprise his role as Worf and Captain a ship. But this time it looks as though it is indeed full speed ahead. CBS Television Studios announced it will launch a totally new Star Trek television series in January 2017. “The new series will blast off with a special preview broadcast on the CBS Television Network. The premiere episode and all subsequent firstrun episodes will then be available exclusively in the United States on CBS All Access, the Network’s digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service,” detailed a report at www. startrek.com

“The next chapter of the Star Trek franchise will also be distributed concurrently for television and multiple platforms around the world by CBS Studios International.” The latter news is big as it means a network in Canada is almost certainly going to air the show. As a Trek fan this is big news. There has not been new live action TV content in the Star Trek universe since the series Enterprise came to an end in 2005. The prequel series with Scott Bakula as Captain Jonathan Archer never really found the love of fans of earlier series, and when the series was cancelled it seemed the high-cost of production universe of Star Trek might never return. That was a sad day given I was a fan from the first episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1987, until the Enterprise went into dry dock. The new Trek will introduce new characters seeking out yet more new worlds and new civilizations. That means they will get back to the roots of what has always made Gene Roddenbury’s universe so intriguing, exploring space and using that process as a platform to explore contemporary themes. Alex Kurtzman will serve as executive producer for the new Star Trek TV series. Kurtzman cowrote and produced the blockbuster films Star Trek (2009) with Roberto Orci, and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) with Orci and Damon Lindelof. With Star Trek celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2016, the launch of a new series is timely, if not overdue, and with

a devoted Trek fan base already in place ratings are ensured, at least for the opening few episodes. Then it will be up to CBS to make sure the product meets the exacting tastes of Trekkers. Fifteen-months away, and count me excited already. There are lots of intriguing series on the horizon for fans of comics and all things geek; the soon to debut Legends of Tomorrow and Preacher as examples, but a new Trek offering trumps all. It will be can’t miss TV for me. - Calvin Daniels

Not too excited

Star Trek is coming out with a new series, set to hit television screens in 2017 and I couldn’t be more excited. Also, I’ve been known to lie on occasion. This, well, this is one of those occasions. In reality, I really couldn’t care less about a new Star Trek series. I didn’t watch any of the other series episodes, I didn’t watch the movies and I don’t plan to ever watch any of it. Not even if there’s a fire (Step Brother reference, anyone?). I can see the interest that the television show (and movies) would hold for people in the 1960’s to 1980’s. A show about space travel and fighting, etc., would take advantage of all of the space and astronaut hype from before and after the 1969 moon landing, but now that same show would, most likely, be boring, lame and altogether horrible. The only thing that I can see that will keep the 2017 edition of the series alive would be if it’s successful with the old Trekkies; the people who loved the original series as well as the majority of the other versions of the show. I don’t see the new Star Trek grasping hold of any new fans and quite frankly, I think it will be a bigger flop than a sumo wrestler off a high diving board. - Randy Brenzen

Remembrance Eve In 1995, the people of the Netherlands held a special ceremony to commemorate their liberation by Canadian forces fifty years earlier. Dutch children placed lit candles on the graves of Canadian soldiers and the candles remained lit overnight in silent tribute. Residents were drawn to the cemeteries by the soft red glow of

the candles burning in the dark. As a result, commemorative candlelight tributes have now become annual ceremonies in the Netherlands and other European countries. On November 11, similar vigil was held at Yorkton’s cenotaph in which local children placed lit candles at the foot of the monument.
