LARGE - Ellen Ruth. The family are deeply saddened to announce the peaceful passing of Ellen Ruth Large on December 12 , 2017 at Sherbrooke Community Centre in Saskatoon. Ruth was born November 21, 1924 in Yorkton to Wesley and Edith Neelin. She attended school in Yorkton, then trained as an RN at Yorkton General Hospital. She worked as a nurse until she married the love of her life, Harley Large, in 1950 and together they raised 3 daughters, Cheryl, Wenda and Barbara. Ruth was a devoted and caring mother, expert knitter and bridge player and fabulous cook. Harley liked to say that her rhubarb pies had “won several international competitions”! She was also a founding member of the Yorkton Beta Sigma Phi and was a dedicated member for over 50 years. She and Harley instilled a deep love of music in their children and she was a champion for whatever need, large or small, that might arise in her family. They lived in Yorkton until 2012, then they moved to Saskatoon, first to Preston Park II and then to Sherbrooke Community Centre. She was predeceased by her parents, her sister, Doreen Grazier; brother, Alan Neelin and her beloved husband, Harley. She is survived by her sister, Mavis (Donn) Willis; daughters, Cheryl (Norm) Fraser, Wenda (David) Saganski and Barbara Large (Gordon Holinaty); grandchildren, Kevin (Meghan) Saganski, Carla Holinaty (Nathan Vanthuyne), Colin (Kaleigh) Saganski, Laura (Ryan) Prestupa, Jeffrey (Sarah) Saganski, Stephen (Rae) Holinaty and great-grandchildren Jack, Liam, Maggie, Callie, Owen, Claire and Alice and another due in February. A Celebration of Ruth’s life was held Monday, December 18 at 1:30 pm at McClure United Church (4025 Taylor St. E.). In lieu of flowers the family ask that memorial donations be made to the Sherbrooke Foundation or other charity of your choice. We wish to thank the wonderful staff at Sherbrooke as well as Sydney Herreria, Czarina Diaz and Carol Aldofer for the compassionate and loving care given to Ruth. Arrangements entrusted to Hillcrest Funeral Home (306-477-4400). Online condolences may be left for the family at www.hillcrestmemorial.ca.
PLEWS - George Plews, beloved husband of Dolena of Yorkton, formerly of Selkirk, MB, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2017 at Yorkton. He was seventy-eight years of age. George was born in Wilkie, SK. After finishing high school, George moved to Yellowknife, NWT to work with NWT Power as a lineman before taking a position with Pacific Western Airlines as an agent. It was here that he met his wife, Dolena. He often told the story that he saw Dolena exit a plane and said, “I am going to marry that girl”. Three months later in January, 1961, George and Dolena exchanged wedding vows in the First Baptist Church, Yorkton. In June 1961, when Pacific Western Airlines became Transair, George and Dolena moved to Flin Flon, MB where George took the position of station agent. Shortly after the birth of their first son, George, in 1963, the family transferred to Winnipeg, MB where their second son, John, was born in 1965. After John’s birth, the family settled in Selkirk, MB and in 1966 a third son, Trevor, was born. The family was complete when their daughter, Tracy, was born in 1970. George worked for Transair for 20 years before becoming a public servant at Canada Employment and Immigration, where he worked until his retirement. During his time in Selkirk, George was very involved with his community. He was elected as a school board trustee, a member of the Selkirk Foundation, the Centennial Committee, the Selkirk Steel Kings, the Selkirk Curling Club, World Junior Hockey Championship, Manitoba Senior Games, founder of the Selkirk Square Dance Club and a variety of minor sports that his children were involved in. For the many volunteer activities he participated in he received several awards. Upon retirement, George established “Dolena’s Pictures”, a custom picture framing business, which was often sought out by various local artists. In 2000, George sold the framing business which created time to help establish the Selkirk Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. In 2006 George and Dolena moved to Yorkton to be closer to family. It wasn’t long before George saw a need for Habitat for Humanity and co-founded the Yorkton organization which has now built six homes and a seventh to be completed in 2018. George’s enthusiasm was contagious. Being community minded George also served the Yorkton community in various ways. He was a member of the Society for the Involvement of Good Neighbours (SIGN) board, the Lions Club, Yorkton Senior Games, Parkland Square and Round Dance Club and on the committee for the Canadian Square and Round Dance convention - the first time being held in Saskatchewan. He was instrumental in establishing “Know Your Number” - a free blood testing clinic so men could know their PSA number in hopes of early prostate cancer detection. He was ecstatic over the success of this program with the intent for it to become an annual event. He became involved in his son’s fencing business to help fill in any spare time. He enjoyed the new challenge and the number of people he met. George’s heart was always big for many. He was instrumental in helping those in need. He worked tirelessly with the church and with those wanting to locate to Canada from Vietnam. One family in particular referred to George as their “benefactor” and every Christmas presented him with a variety of products from their home country as a way of thanking him for his help and hospitality. George’s generosity and sensitive heart was evident with all those he met. Most important in George’s life was his family. George was happiest when he was surrounded by his family - whether at home, out camping, attending reunions or sporting events. Family was his life. As grandchildren came along he tried to attend as many of their activities as possible watching school concerts, hockey, basketball, slow pitch, soccer, swimming, piano recitals, officiating soccer games, choir performances, voice competitions, rock band performances, pony rides, welding competitions, flying remote control airplanes and attending graduations. He was so proud of all their talents and accomplishments! Dancing was a huge part of George’s life. Those feet were often moving to the song on the radio or the song he hummed throughout the house. Any chance he had, George would be pulling Dolena or one of the granddaughters to swing around the kitchen or living room. George’s love of dance led to many square dancing jamborees travelling all over Canada and the United States to dance. While living in Manitoba, George was a loyal Winnipeg Jets fan. When the club was sold, he supported the Manitoba Moose. In 2011 when the Jets returned to Winnipeg, George threatened to return as well! However, family trumped everything and he watched the Jets from a distance to be where he was the happiest - near family. George was very proud of his children and grandchildren and all that they have become. His wife Dolena was his “everything” - the love of his life. George loved life, his family and people - he will be truly missed. George is survived by his wife of 56 years Dolena; son George (Becky), Brendan and Aidan; son John (May), Alexander, Dina and Elya; son Trevor (Tammy), Emily and Mason; daughter Tracy Wills, Tamara and Tyla; brother-in-law Bruce Burrow (Ardelia) and brother-in-law Stan Burrow (Gail) as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and many close friends. Predeceased by his parents George and Helen (Miskell) Plews; parents-in-law George and Dolly (McKay) Burrow; step-mother Alice Plews nee Wilson; brother Eric Plews and brother-in-law Bobby Burrow. Cremation has taken place. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 pm on Thursday, December 28, 2017 at First Baptist Church in Yorkton. A Memorial Service will follow at 2:00 pm from First Baptist Church in Yorkton with Pastor Steve Rosluk officiating. Interment will follow at a later date in the Yorkton City Cemetery. Donations may be made in George’s memory to the Yorkton Chapter of Habitat for Humanity or the Yorkton First Baptist Church as gifts of remembrance. Thank you to all for your condolences, prayers and kinds words. Arrangement are entrusted to Bailey’s Funeral Home.

Pall bearers were Lyndon Brazeau, Robert Charka, John Melenchuk, Barry Pelletier, Lance Wells and Brian Scheu. Arrangements entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home and Crematorium. KARDYNAL - Evelyn Antoinette Kardynal. It is with deep sadness that the family of Evelyn Kardynal announce her peaceful passing. She was the best, kindest, loving mother, sister and nana. She was truly loved and cherished by her family who know life will never be the same without her wonderful sense of humour, her wit and loving ways of looking after her family. Evy was born and raised in Yorkton, SK where she completed her education and went on to Business College. Her career path took her to work in management of the Scotia Bank in Yorkton. During those years she met and married her husband, Robert. They were blessed with three precious sons, who were the delight and light of her life. She was heartbroken as her first born son Scott predeceased her in his infancy. As life went on she was blessed with Darren and Christopher. Through her two sons she was given much joy with three beautiful grandchildren Brody, Jasmine and Christian. We will miss you and love you forever and we thank you for giving us a great life with many special precious memories. We know we will see you again someday in heaven - because we know that is where you are. Evy is survived by her husband, Robert, sons Darren and Christopher and her three grandchildren, also sister and brother-in-law Dolly and Don Swanson. Goodbye for now our beautiful mother, nana and sister. ZWIRSKY - On December 9, 2017 Fred passed away peacefully at the Yorkton and District Nursing Home at the age of 77 years. Freddie Zwirsky was born on April 4, 1940 to Michael and Eva Zwirsky (nee Sereda) in Jedburgh, SK. He was the youngest of two sons and his birth was welcomed by his older brother Louis. He completed his high school education at St. Joseph’s College in Yorkton and then completed his journeyman’s mechanic trade in Moose Jaw with his good friend Ray Dubiel. Following the completion of school, he returned to Jedburgh to operate Zwirsky Bros., a farm implement repair shop with his brother, under the proud Case brand. During these years, weekend activities often revolved around weekend dances in various rural halls, attendance at sports days including some mischief and a lot of great memories for he and his friends. It was during one of many of these events that a young lady named Angie Sass caught his attention. On June 26, 1965 Fred and Angie were married at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton. Following their marriage, Fred and Angie were blessed with their son, Delmar, in 1966, daughter, Barbara, in 1967 and daughter, Janice, in 1974. In 1967 Fred and Angie decided to move to the city and purchased a house in Yorkton and Fred began his career with Case Power and Equipment. Many lifelong friendships were established during his working days at the Case dealership in Yorkton, including many post-work staff “choir practices”. Fred also worked at York Auto Supply and Joe’s Bumper to Bumper until his retirement. In his early years he enjoyed camping and fishing and was active in several sports. He also played in a band with his good buddies and developed lifetime friendships during this time. He enjoyed fixing and repairing equipment and vehicles and could usually find a solution to make thinks work. Unfortunately this trait appears to have skipped a generation in the family. He was a member of St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, a former member of the Knights of Columbus #5182, a hockey coach and provided opportunities for his children to participate in sports and other activities during their younger years. Although faced with several health challenges during his time on earth, Fred proved to be persistent, resilient, humble and strong in all of his health-related battles. Common responses to questions from medical staff or friends and family regarding how he was doing usually included brief answers such as “I’m Ok” or “Good”. He never wanted others to worry if he was feeling any pain or was uncomfortable. His ability to find inner strength to battle on amazed family and friends and medical staff as well. Fred was predeceased by his parents, Michael & Eva, his brother, Louis, his father-in-law, Metro Sass, his mother-in-law, Margaret Sass and several brothers-in-law, sisters-inlaw, cousins and nephews. He will forever be remembered and cherished by his beloved wife of 52 years, Angie (Sass); his son Delmar (Kim), daughters Barbara (Robert) and Janice and special granddaughter Rio Eva Sadie who always brought a smile and renewed energy to “Grampy”. We are thankful for the example that Fred has set when it comes to work ethic, respecting others, your sense of humour and the joy and tears we have shared over the years. Angie and family wish to thank the numerous professional medical staff at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre, the Yorkton & District Nursing Home, the Regina General Hospital and the Pasqua Hospital who were involved with caring and providing support for Fred over the years. We are also very thankful for the prayers, support and words of encouragement from Father Bohdan Lukie, Father Ray Lukie and Father Methodius Kushko of St. Mary’s Parish. The Requiem Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Thursday, December 14, 2017 from St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, Yorkton. Officiants were Fr. Ray Lukie C.Ss.R. assisted by Fr. Methodius Kushko C.Ss.R. Colette Karapita was the Cantor, assisted by members of St. Mary’s Parish Choir. Honourary bearers were Rob Benko, Charles Hyca and William Sass, cross bearer was Darrell Sass, Colette Karapita read the Epistle. The interment followed in the Garden of St. Luke at the Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Mark & Richard Benko, Tim Dubiel, Terry Kuzyk, Bruce Kyle and Allan Pacholko serving as the casket bearers. Memorials in Fred’s memory can be made to St. Mary’s Church as tokens of remembrance.

BETKER - In loving memory of Edwin (Ed) who passed away December 20, 2000.
We think of you in silence, We often speak your name, But all we have are memories, And your picture in a frame. Your resting place we visit, And put flowers there with care, But no one knows the heartache, As we turn and leave you there. — Always remembered by wife Lorraine, Lauren, Tom & Family, Glenn & Family, Corey & Family
