BREZINSKI - Betty Leona Brezinski of Yorkton, formerly of Invermay, passed away peacefully at her home in Aspen Bluff Villa, Yorkton on Sunday, January 1, 2017. She was 83 years of age. Betty was born on November 16, 1933 on the family farm in the Buchanan District, the daughter of Joseph and Anna (Wolkowski) Soloski. Her siblings were Rudy, Joyce, Al and Bronoslaw, who died in infancy. She completed grade 9 at Buchanan School and at the age of 16 ventured to Winnipeg to work as a receptionist at St. Joseph’s Hospital. About a year later she returned home and became a teller at the Royal Bank in Invermay. In May 1952 Betty met the love of her life, Marion, at a Feast Day celebration at St. Andrew’s Church, north of Invermay. In October of that same year Betty became Marion’s wife at St. Ann’s R.C. Church, Buchanan. After working for a short time in Westburn, MB, Marion and Betty returned to tend to Marion’s family farm, 10 miles NE of Invermay and care for his younger siblings; Tony, Louis and Adele. They farmed the homestead for the next ten years while Betty became the mother of her first three children, Cecilia, David and Gerald. In September 1961 the young family moved to the house they built with their own hands, 3 miles south of the homestead. It was here that the next three children; Lydia, Monica and James were added to the family. At the side of her husband, Betty developed a farmyard and four quarters of land. With her husband she gardened, worked the dairy, hauled the grain, slopped the pigs, picked the eggs, butchered the chickens, drove the school bus and raised their reason for living - their 6 children. Betty often spoke about how “we never worked on Sunday, but the work was always done” and Betty always made sure there was time for their cherished neighbours, friends and family. On top of all this Betty still found time to sew, crochet and home-cooked meals were her specialty. After the children left home Betty was the librarian and then a receptionist at the doctors office in Invermay. 1992 was the year of the farm auction sale though the newly retired couple lived at their farmyard for 2 more years. In 1994 they bought a house in Yorkton and the move was made to the city. As Marion’s health was failing, Betty reached out for help and moved to Calgary to be near her son, David, brother Al, sister Joyce and their families. August 1998 brought Betty and Marion back to Yorkton to a manageable apartment. In Betty’s words “….things changed. Another leaf got turned over…” - on September 24, 1999, the love of her life was admitted to the Yorkton Regional Nursing Home. With Marion taken care of, Betty found pleasure in cooking for the Redemptorist priests of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church in Yorkton. For 8 years Betty never missed a day of visiting her husband and she was at his side when he passed away. If ever she needed to be away, she made sure someone took her place. Occasions that took Betty away from the farm with Marion or later from Marion’s side included family functions like Baptisms, First Communions, Confirmations, graduations, Ukrainian Dancing or sporting events and weddings of her 22 grandchildren and 18 greatgrandchildren and the funeral of her grandson, Michael. Betty and Marion also made numerous pilgrimages together and recently Betty humbly bragged about never missing the pilgrimage in Rama. Betty was very happy to say she travelled from the east coast to the west coast of Canada - the Rocky Mountains being her favourite. She has boxes of memorabilia of trips she made to Lourdes, Florida, Hawaii, Ukraine, Winona, Spain and most treasured were the pilgrimages she made with her brother, Al, to the Holy Land and Rome where she prayed with all her heart for those dear to her. Fairview Arms Independent Living Condo became Betty’s new home in July 2002. She lived there and loved the lifestyle of freedom to come and go it gave her until rapidly declining health forced her to move to Aspen Bluff Villa Private Care Home on December 1, 2016. After receiving all the blessings that her beloved Church offered, it was from her new home that Betty passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 1, 2017. May she rest in peace. Prayers were held on Friday, January 6, 2017 preceded by the praying of the rosary led by Betty’s grandchildren from St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton with Very Rev. Father Bohdan Lukie, C.Ss.R. officiating. Funeral Mass was celebrated according to the traditional Latin rite on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at 10:00 am from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Rev. Father Raymond Lillis as the Celebrant. Grandsons, Jason Sliva, Eric Sliva, Gregory Dutchak, Timothy Sliva and Joseph Sliva served as altar servers. Honourary Bearers were grandchildren, Laura, Donna, Nicole, Melissa, Jessica, Caitlyn, Aaron, Sarah, Naomi, Stephanie, Mercedes, Kimberly, Austin and all eighteen great-grandchildren. DRUL - It Is with great sadness we announce the passing of Al Drul, husband, dad and pa on January 3, 2017 at Yorkton Regional Hospital at the age of 76, after a courageous battle with cancer. Alexander Allan Drul was born to John and Mary (Groshak) Drul on June 1, 1940 in Menzie, MB. He was the youngest of three boys and at a young age his family moved to Rossburn, MB where he attended school and worked on the family farm. After graduation, Al moved to Winnipeg where he began his career with Avco Finance in 1960. Al met Veronika in Winnipeg and they married on July 22, 1961. In 1964 he was promoted to senior management with Avco and was transferred to Yorkton to open a new regional branch. He successfully managed the office for thirty-three and a half years, achieving many awards along the way for his excellence. Everyone who knew Al always knew he had a great story or joke to share. He always offered you a drink before you got in the door if you stopped by the house. He MC’d more weddings and events than anyone else we knew and as a charismatic man could entertain any crowd. While his decades of dedicated hard work was notable, Friday Happy Hour at the back of the office was a tradition to share good laughs with good friends. ‘Avco Al’ (his title as an ‘unofficial crop inspector’) retired from Avco in 1994, although he continued to dedicate his time to the greater Yorkton community throughout his retirement. Al was busy working as an insurance and financial advisor and in his final years Alexander’s Men’s Wear recruited him (for his impeccable style) and to assist in the store when he was away. Al’s commitment, excellent leadership skills and his belief to always give back was well-recognized within the community. He held the position of an executive member and/or President for many organizations over the years. Al was an active member of the Kinsmen and K-40 Clubs and participated in TeleMiracle, fundraising efforts of the Kinsmen Arena, as well as many other events. He was a board member for eight years for the Yorkton Housing Authority at Anderson Lodge and executive President for many years of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Al was also actively involved as director with minor sports, coaching hockey and baseball as well as volunteering many hours at the hall working bingos and special functions. While Al had a busy schedule he never missed a birthday party, just as cake was served he always came through that back door! Al was an integral part of the twenty-year tradition of the Mountview Open Golf Tournament. He loved cheering for his favourite teams the Bombers (then the Riders) and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Al was actively involved in chauffeuring many world class curling teams such as the Howard, Gushue, Martin and Ferbey teams when they were in town or in Kelowna. He especially enjoyed dancing and listening to his favourite song ‘Too Old to Die Young’ by Moe Bandy. Al loved having company over, even if that meant leaving the front grass half cut. He always said the grass would be there waiting for him when he got back. Al enjoyed many activities such as curling, golfing, fishing and boating at the many lakes in Saskatchewan and Manitoba with his young family. He loved his travels with his family, including a trip with Colleen to Russia and to the many parts of Canada and the US with Veronika. Another special trip was visiting Corinne and her family when they lived in Bolivia, South America. One of Al’s fondest trips was when he and Veronika travelled to Hawaii with the children and grandchildren. Al and Veronika had the good fortune to spend the last ten winters in Kelowna, BC. He is survived by his wife, Veronika of 56 years, son Curtis (Michelle) of Calgary, daughters Colleen of Edmonton and Corinne of Kelowna, granddaughters Sydney of Vancouver, Morgan and grand dog Molli, Kennedy of Calgary and brother Ernie (Lillian) of Rossburn. He is predeceased by his parents, John and Mary Drul, brother Zenon (Rose) Drul, and son-in-law John Snape. The family wishes to thank friends and relatives for support and prayers during Al’s illness and the health caregivers. Prayers were held on Sunday evening, January 8, 2017, the funeral service was held on Monday morning, January 9, 2017, all from the Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Yorkton. Very Rev. Mel Slashinsky was the Celebrant. Cantor, Yvonne Panchuk, assisted by members of the Parish Choir, sang the responses. The cross bearers were Sydney, Morgan & Kennedy Snape. Honourary bearers were Howie Fehrenbach, Geoff Dawson, Johnny Kruk, Nick Kucher, Ron Hubbs & Wayne Elliott. The interment took place in the Garden of St. Luke at the Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Al Greschuk, Alex Gerard, Cal Smith, Darrel Drul, Kevin Yurkiw and Randy Geisler serving as the casket bearers. WEBSTER - It is with sadness that the family announces the passing of Julia Louise Webster on December 31, 2016. Louise was born on April 8, 1921 to Dennis and Sarah Downes in Stockholm, SK. Louise began her education in Esterhazy and concluded high school in Rocanville. Louise, after finishing school, took a culinary course to help in the family restaurant, but much preferred working in the local doctor’s clinic. In Rocanville, she met her first husband Reginald (Reg) Cooper who she married in November of 1942. Reg and Louise moved to Bredenbury where Louise helped Reg run his heavy equipment construction business as well as raise their family of five children. In 1964, Reg died suddenly leaving Louise to raise the three youngest children on her own. In November of 1966, Louise remarried a long-time family friend Richard (Dick) Webster. They moved to the Webster family farm in the Clumber District. Louise became very involved with the farming operation. Their daughter Lorna Ann Marie was born in January of 1968. Eventually the farm was sold and they moved back into Bredenbury where Louise worked for Prince Insurance Agency. Dick was Louise’s soulmate and partner. Together they had a good life travelling extensively and enjoying many of the same interests. In 2006, Dick and Louise sold their home in Bredenbury and moved to the Bentley in Yorkton. After Dick’s death in 2010, Louise, due to failing health, moved to the Gladstone, Kamsack Care Home and eventually in September of 2015 to Lakeside Manor in Saltcoats where she resided till her passing. Louise was very proud of her Irish heritage and would remind all on March 17 that she was 100% IrishCanadian. She could be feisty and determined and would let you know if she thought you stepped out of line, but on the other hand always championed the underdog whether amongst family or friends. Louise was a people person who kept close contact with relatives and friends alike, always had time for a visit and over the years took care of many who had no family. As a wife, mother and grandmother she was always supportive in whatever her family endeavoured. She did not interfere or demand attention, but loved when family gathered and had a good time. Louise was always involved in community organizations. She enjoyed working with Bredenbury Community Club, Figure Skating Club, Curling Club, Busy Bees and Saskatchewan Senior Association. Louise was also very involved in the Legion Ladies Auxiliary where she was on the local executive and a Saskatchewan Zone Rep. She was very proud in 1989 to receive her Pin and Certificate of Life Membership as well as the 50 year Medal in 1997 honouring and thanking her for years of Service and a job well done from the Royal Canadian Legion Sask Command Ladies’ Auxiliary. Louise loved to read, play cards and was an avid fan of the weather channel and curling. She shared her many talents of sewing, knitting, chocolate making and of course crocheting. Her hands were always busy, right up to a few days before her death. Louise was predeceased by: her parents, Dennis and Sarah, sisters Nellie Hokanson and Bessie Buckell, brothers John, Andrew, Francis and Wilbert Downes; Husbands, Reginald Cooper and Richard Webster; a child in infancy and sons-in-law Myron Gabert and Peter Welechenko. Louise is survived by: her children: Jean Gabert (Myron); Joyce Morgan (Robert); Linda Cooper-Nagy (Joe); Dennis Cooper (Sherry); Debbie Welechenko (Peter) and Lorna Webster. Her grandchildren: Jeffery Gabert, Jason Gabert, Terri (Glenn) Parsons, Craig Morgan, Cheryl Andrew, Michelle Andrew, Christopher (Christy) Cooper, Reginald (Kathleen) Cooper, Samantha Cooper, Susan Hoff, Travis (Melanie) Welechenko and 3 great-grandchildren: Justin Zook, Christopher and Rainey Cooper. Survived also by sisters-in-law Marge Felgate, Margaret (Ken) Lowe and many nieces and nephews. Friends are invited to join the family for a celebration of Louise’s life on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at 2:00 pm from Knox United Church in Bredenbury. She enjoyed camping and fishing with family and friends. Attending the various activities of her family she was our biggest coach, fan and supporter. An avid craftsperson she enjoyed pottery, painting and crocheting. Her knitting produced countless mittens, slippers, socks, toques, along with lovely Scandinavian sweaters. Always creative yet practical, she produced countless warm, beautiful quilts which will be treasured always. She always saw the beauty instead of obstacles; one example of this is how after long, hard hours spent picking rocks to clear fields, she took time and energy to turn them into beautiful rock gardens and patios which beautified the farm yard. The practical and necessary shelter belt of trees became a beautiful community landmark, animal and bird sanctuary. She loved music and played the piano, mandolin, guitar and auto harp. She and Joe played with local community groups for several years. “God writes the Gospel not in the Bible alone, but also on trees, and in the flowers and clouds and stars.” - Martin Luther. Evelyn loved nature and wildlife, including bird watching. A constant, passionate gardener, she shared the bounty of her huge garden with friends and family. Yearly we watched for her famous pickled carrots, beans, beets. She inspired us to follow and continue with ethnic cooking such as cabbage rolls, Swedish meatballs, lefse, kifli and poppy seed bread and buns. In recent years, she kept a pretty flower garden and enjoyed assisting grandson, Erik with his vegetable patch. This spring we will watch for the reawakening of her garden including her recently planted “Canada 150” tulip bulbs. “Time began in a Garden”. Throughout her life she was an avid reader and enjoyed a wide variety of literature. When her eyesight began fading she used an e-reader and audio books. She was a lifelong learner and had an incredible memory. She could repeat countless poems and song lyrics. She was an intelligent, creative, endlessly curious and passionate person. She watched over a large and diverse and extended family and was always concerned about everyone’s welfare. We always knew that she was in our corner and was proud of our accomplishments. She had a busy and interesting life, adapted well to life’s changes and in recent years met her health challenges with courage and dignity. She has earned a well-deserved rest. She was comfortable and enjoyed her meals and the company of her new friends at Eamer Court in Saskatoon. Our family would also like to thank the staff at St. Paul’s Hospital for the care and kindness she received during her final days. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to Hope Cancer Help Centre at 1290 Pinehouse Drive, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, S7K 5W1.

BRODA - Casimir John - May 11, 1929 - December 28, 2016 entered eternal rest at the Kamsack Hospital at the age of 87 with his family at his side. Cas was born to parents Joe and Sophie Broda (nee Suwala) in Goodeve, SK. The family eventually moved and settled north of Kamsack on a farm in the St. Philips District where Cas attended school and helped with the family farm. At age 18 he headed east and spent many years working in northern Ontario cutting logs in bush camps. Cas met Marie Kerluke and they were married on November 6, 1952 - a loving marriage that lasted 64 years. Cas was the founder of Broda Construction and he bought his first truck in 1957. His pursuit to operate a successful and honest business took him to many parts of the country as the business grew. He groomed many business friendships that have lasted a lifetime. He retired from the business in 2004. One of Cas’ passions was the family farm. Over time he acquired more and more farm land and he loved nothing more than to spend a day at the farm on the tractor cultivating the land. (This was much better than golfing or fishing in his mind). Over the years Cas has always been a strong community supporter and leader. His strong passion to give back lasted throughout his entire life span. He has received many awards, honours and distinctions, with the most notable being a recipient of the Saskatchewan Order of Merit in 2009. Cas’ dedication to his Catholic Faith was strong and undeniable. Cas was a long standing Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. There were many private and quiet causes that were supported by Cas and Marie over the years. His passion for the grotto in Rama, SK and for St. Michael’s Camp at Madge Lake, SK are just two examples of his efforts to build reminders that would be long lasting and help keep the Catholic Faith present in our lives. He wanted to share his faith with everyone who wanted to experience it. Cas was a man that made a lasting impression on those who knew him. He was strong and determined and bore an influence on everyone around him. He used his time on earth well - he accomplished many things and he believed in making a difference. He has made the world a better place. Cas will never be forgotten and will be dearly missed. In true Cas style, he fought hard to stay with us for as long as he could before he found peace. Cas is survived by his loving wife Marie, his three children Gordie (Barbara), Shannon (Bradley) and Robbie (Colleen), his eight grandchildren Noelle, Joel (Blaire), Sash, Taylor (Stephanie), Brianna, Jake, Taryn, and Aidan, his one great-grandchild Zayla, his sisters Rosaline, Josephine, Helen and Adeline (Emmanuel), his brothers Ed (Nancy) and Louie and by his many nieces, nephews and cousins. Cas was predeceased by his parents Joe and Sophie Broda, his sister Mary and his brother Ray. Prayer service was held Monday, January 2, 2017 at 7 pm from the O.C.C. Hall, (407 Park Street West) in Kamsack, SK. Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at 1:00 pm from St. Stephen’s Roman Catholic Church, (402 3rd St.), Kamsack, SK. MILES - Frank 1932 - 2011 The moment that you died My heart was torn in two, One side filled with heartache, The other died with you. I often lie awake at night, When the world is fast asleep, And take a walk down memory lane, With tears upon my cheeks. Remembering you is easy, I do it every day, But missing you is heartache That never goes away. I hold you tightly within my heart And there you will remain. Until we meet again I love you most. - Your loving wife, Pat.

Coming Events Saskatoon Farm Toy and Collectible Show January 13-15, 2017 at the German Cultural Centre, Saskatoon, SK. Friday 5pm-9pm, Saturday 10am-5pm, Sunday 10am-4pm. Special features include farm toys and scenes, construction equipment, vintage toys, die-cast models, collectibles, replacement parts and more!
PLAN OF THE WEEK
Immediately to the right of the foyer is a den, featuring French doors to a covered porch. Through an archway is the great room, with a dramatic double-height ceiling and a fireplace. The dining room, open to the great room, occupies a bayed-out area and enjoys access to a spacious terrace — the perfect spot for al fresco summer meals. The kitchen is separated from the dining room by a prep island, so the cook will never feel isolated. The sink, set diagonally into a
corner, will receive lots of light from windows on two sides. A walkthrough pantry connects the kitchen to the laundry room. With a useful coat cupboard, as well as access to the double garage, the laundry room can double as a mud room. A U-shaped flight of stairs leads to the second floor, a portion of which is open to the great room below. The master suite features a large window that overlooks the back garden. The walk-in closet is separated from the four-piece en-suite
by a handy linen cupboard. A shower stall and soaker tub in the en-suite add a touch of spa-like comfort. The second and third bedrooms, separated by a three-piece bathroom, both enjoy an extra-wide window sill. Ceilings measure nine feet throughout. The double garage is large enough to contain a compact workshop. Exterior finishes include painted trim and wood siding, and the wooden pilasters that frame the front porch have stone bases. This home measures 38 feet wide and 54 feet deep, for a total of 1,997 square feet of living space. Plans for design 7-3946 are available for $755 (set of 5), $815 (set of 8) and $863 for a super set of 10. B.C. residents add 7% Prov. Sales Tax. Also add $35.00 for Priority courier charges within B.C. or $65.00 outside of B.C. Please add 5% G.S.T. or 13% H.S.T. (where applicable) to both the plan price and postage charges. Our NEW 48TH Edition of the Home Plan Catalogue containing over 400 plans is available for $15.50 (includes taxes, postage and handling). Chef Dez on Cooking
by Gordon Desormeaux www.chefdez.com Here we are in January. This is the time of year that is filled with heathy resolutions, but because of the cold temperatures and still limited daylight hours, we also yearn for comfort food. Allow me to help you satisfy both in a single recipe. This recipe is the perfect solution because the cut sizes doesn’t really matter too much since the whole soup is pureed anyway. Less cutting means less effort on your part. There is an abundance of fresh vegetables in this soup and black beans are a great source of protein and dietary fiber among other nutritional aspects. Yes, I do realize that the first ingredient is bacon, but this can easily be replaced with a bit of coconut oil or other healthy cooking oil. However, if you feel that your diet regimen can handle some bacon moderation, this is less than 1/3 of a pound of bacon for 10 cups of soup. Black Bean Soup Makes approximately 10 cups “The cut sizes for the bacon and vegetables really doesn’t matter too much as the whole soup is pureed with a hand blender anywayâ€? •125g bacon slices, cut into smaller pieces •1 small onion, chopped •1 green bell pepper, chopped •1 large carrot, chopped •1 celery stalk, chopped •2 jalapenos, chopped - seeds & membrane removed for mild •3 to 4 garlic cloves, chopped General Employment
•2 - 540ml cans of black beans, drained & rinsed •3 to 4 cups chicken stock •1 small bunch fresh cilantro, chopped (reserve some for garnish) •1 medium tomato, chopped •2 tsp ground cumin •1/2 cup jarred salsa of your choice •Salt & Pepper to taste •1/2 cup sour cream, for garnish, optional
1. Add the bacon pieces to a large heavy bottomed pot over medium high heat and cook until fat has been rendered from the bacon. Cooked but not necessarily crisp, stirring occasionally. 2. Turn the heat down to medium and add the diced onions, green peppers, carrots, celery, jalapenos, garlic, and some salt & pepper to the bacon and bacon fat. Cover and cook until the vegetables are mostly soft, approximately 5 to 7 minutes. 3. Add the black beans and 3 cups of the chicken stock. 4. Add the cilantro, tomatoes, cumin, and salsa. Puree with a hand blender until smooth. Use the remaining 1 cup of chicken stock to thin the soup to your desired consistency while pureeing. Season with salt and pepper to taste. 5. Heat to desired temperature and serve each bowl garnished with an optional dollop of sour cream and/or a sprig of cilantro Chef Dez is a Chef, Writer, & Host.
