HEIDUK - It is with saddened hearts the family of Edward “Ed” Heiduk of Calgary, AB (formerly Yorkton, SK) announce his passing. A loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather Ed was welcomed to the Kingdom of Heaven peacefully Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at the age of 89. Ed was born on January 6, 1928 and was the eldest of Annie (nee Sliz) and Karl “Charles” Heiduk’s four children. He was raised and went to school in the district of Brewer northeast of Melville, SK. Growing up he enjoyed the company of his brother Arthur and kid sister Shirley and greatly admired his father who taught him many things about farming, mechanics and the necessary skills to succeed in life. During 1944-1945 at the age of sixteen he left the farm to attend Farm School at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon where he would receive his Vocational Agriculture Diploma. After his father passed away in 1948 the operation of the farm would become his prime focus. On June 23, 1953 he would marry his dear wife and friend Rosie Bella. They began their lives together on the Heiduk homestead and would soon welcome their dear children David in 1954, Debra in 1956, Sandra in 1961 and Robert in 1974. In 1956 Ed began a successful career with the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool where he would become an expert grain buyer. He developed a keen sense for crops and was one of few who could grade them by hand. Ed operated elevators and gained the friendships of many townsfolk in the farming communities of Brewer, Yarbo, Waldron, Roleau, Invermay, Stornoway, Langenberg, Lake Lenore, Southey and finally Yorkton, SK where he retired in 1988. Post-retirement Ed would continue working part-time for Crop Insurance and Yorkton Flying Services. Ed was a courteous and respectful gentleman and found happiness listening to and helping others. He loved music and learned to play many musical instruments by ear. He found great joy in singing, whether it was at home with the family, tenor in the church choir or four-part harmony in barbershop quartet. During quiet times, he enjoyed listening to his music collection. Ed had many hobbies and could often be found tending to the garden with Rosie, travelling to visit with family and friends, fishing, woodworking or flying model airplanes. Ed was a devout Christian and was a faithful member of the Lutheran Church. He lived a life of goodness and peace and joy dedicating much love to Church council, hospital visitations and choir. Ed is survived by his wife Rose; son David (Sylvia) Heiduk, daughter Debra (William) Becker, son Robert (Sheri) Heiduk; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; his brother Arthur Heiduk and sister Shirley Goebel (nee Heiduk). He was predeceased by his parents, brother Alfred and daughter Sandra Arthurs (nee Heiduk). Funeral Services will be officiated by Pastor Darren Dressler and held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY, Crowfoot Chapel, (82 Crowfoot Circle N.W., Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, November 14 at 2:00 p.m. with the Graveside Service to follow at Yorkton Memorial Gardens at a later date. Reception to follow at the funeral home. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the charity of the donor’s choice. In living memory of Edward Heiduk, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Airdrie, 300 TOWERLANE DRIVE, AIRDRIE, AB. Telephone: 403-948-1100.

Pollon, CFIB’s VicePresident, Prairie & Agri-business. “Shortterm hiring plans are worsening, with only 11 per cent of owners looking to hire and 19 per cent planning to layoff in the next three months. Only about one-third of entrepreneurs are saying that their businesses are in good shape (2nd lowest in Canada).” “Saskatchewan entrepreneurs’ concerns about taxes and regulatory costs are now at an alltime high of 63 per cent, compared to 49 per cent in October 2016,” added Braun-Pollon. “However, we are pleased yesterday’s Throne Speech announced plans to increase the small business income threshold from $500,000 to $600,000, effective January 1, 2018. Saskatchewan will have the highest threshold in Canada. We are also pleased the provincial government will continue to oppose a federal carbon tax and federal small business tax changes.” Nationally, after four months of sharp decline, small business confidence in Canada steadied in October. The index registered a weak 57.2 this month, but it is 0.3 points higher than September’s dismal showing. As recently as last May, by comparison, the index had been at a cyclical high of 66.0. “Concerns about wage Auctions

costs, taxes and regulations continue to be top of mind when business owners are asked about their costs and constraints of doing business,” said Ted Mallett, CFIB Chief Economist. “The end result remains a pretty sour picture across the country, with most provincial indexes clustered around the 55 mark.” Results are mixed across the regions. Despite losing ground, Quebec remains the most optimistic place for business owners, with an index of 67.6. Nova Scotia businesses are a step back in second spot at 62.5, while improving sentiment in British Columbia brought its index up to 61.9. Lowest levels of optimism are seen in Newfoundland & Labrador (48.3) and Saskatchewan (52.7) — results typical of the past 18 months in both provinces. For the rest of the country, a generally sour mood has kept index values clustered around the 55 mark. Results and the full report are available at: www.cfib-fcei.ca/english/barometer Highlights of the Saskatchewan Business Barometer for October: • 32% of businesses in Saskatchewan say their overall state of business is good (41% nationally); 18% say it is bad (11% nationally). • 19% plan to decrease employment in the next 3-4 months (17% nationally) and only 11% of Saskatchewan businesses plan to increase fulltime employment (16% nationally). • Insufficient domestic demand remains the main operating challenge (48%), followed by shortage of skilled labour (28%), and management skills, time constraints (23%). • Major cost pressures for small business include: tax, regulatory costs (63%), insurance costs (48%) and wage costs (46%).
