SASS - Mrs. Rose Sass of Yorkton, beloved mother of Raymond (Donna) Sass and Lorraine (Mike) Heck was called to eternal rest at the age of 84. Rose is survived by 3 grandchildren, Nolan Sass, Trista Sass, and Brandon Heck as well as 7 great-grandchildren. Rose was predeceased by her husband Pete in May 2012, her parents John and Katherine, brothers William, John, Mike, Peter, Fred and sisters Katie, Nettie, Mary, Eva and Julie and is survived by her brother Joe. On October 25, 1953 she was united in marriage to Pete Sass. In 1955 they moved to a farm near Beaverdale area better known as the Lees farm. Their son Raymond was born in 1955 followed by the birth of a daughter Lorraine in 1959. The family endured the tough times without the modern conveniences and impassible roads until 1960 when Pete and Rose purchased land in the Fenwood area. Pete and Rose made many upgrades to the house and farm and remained on the farm until their retirement in 1994. At that time they purchased their dream home in Yorkton and enjoyed the regular retirement income which differed from the unpredictable farm income. They enjoyed their retirement lifestyle visiting many relatives, playing cards, drives in the country and meals out at Melrose Place, Grumpy’s and KFC better known as “Chicken”. Rose could always be remembered for her hospitality as anyone that visited was always treated to food varying from homemade baking to a full meal at short notice. Throughout the years at the farm she would have two large freezers full of food as well as a large garden that she would share with her children. Rose could be counted upon to assist in any family function especially in bringing food. Within her busy life on the farm Rose found time to instill importance of family traditions and values. Rose enjoyed crocheting, gardening, canning fruits and vegetables as well as listening to country music on CJGX. Rose ensured her children and family would not go hungry by providing a continuous supply of perogies and head cheese. In May 2011 due to declining health Rose was separated from her beloved Pete to be united later that year at the Yorkton and District Nursing Home. Rose remained a resident of the home until her passing. The family would like to thank the staff of the Yorkton and District Nursing Home especially the Skinner Unit for their compassionate and professional care of Rose throughout her life at the home. The Funeral Service was held on Thursday, June 16, 2016 at Yorkton Memorial Garden Family Centre Very Rev. Father Bohdan Lukie, C.Ss.R. officiating. The responses were led by Bernadette Gabora and Victor Puchala. The interment took place in the Garden of St. Luke at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Mike Heck (Son-in-Law), Lorraine Heck (Daughter), Donna Evans (Daughter-in-Law), Ray Sass (Son), Brandon Heck (Grandson) and Jayd Girling (Great Granddaughter) serving as the casket bearers. Following a memorial reception, son Ray shared words of remembrance and appreciation. Memorial honouring Rose’s life may be made to The Skinner Unit and Yorkton & District Nursing Home or the Alzheimer’s Society as gifts of remembrance. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.baileysfuneralhome.com. Vichnaya Pamyat! Eternal Memory!
POLSOM - Mom, Grandma, wife, beautiful soul - so many words to describe an amazing woman. Janet Elizabeth Polsom, Betty, as everyone knew her, was born on May 2, 1937 to George and Muriel Hiett in Weston, ON. Her father moved his young family to Calgary where she went to school. After completing Grade 11, she went to Nursing School and became a Nurses’ Aide. Betty worked in Edmonton until she met a young soldier by the name of Ernest Polsom. After a short period of dating, her dashing soldier was off for a two year stint in Germany as a peacekeeper and the two of them began a letter writing courtship. He knew he was going to marry her and a couple of months after his return from Germany, they were united in marriage - a union which lasted 54 years before Ernest went on to heaven to make a home for her there. She missed him terribly. Now they are together in heaven and we can take great comfort in knowing that Grandma won’t be alone, as Grandpa was there to greet her. Together forever through some terribly tough times and some amazingly happy ones, they shared a love that endured all. Mom and Dad were blessed with six children, Ernest, Donald, Janet, Patricia, Philip and Joann. She was an amazing mother who loved each and every one of us the very best that she could. As we married and brought our mates into the fold, she welcomed each one of them with open arms. Then came the grandchildren and then great-grandchildren. Oh my how she loved each and every one of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She cared for each one, and each one was special to her in their own way. She always had time for them and always had hugs for each of them. Mom had a very giving heart and we remember when she reached out to two little girls who had lost their home in Kelowna. Mom wanted so badly to do something for them! She made many, many phone calls and finally found a lady at CBC who contacted them. She sent them a beautiful gift box filled with all sorts of things little girls love and thus began a lifelong friendship. Mom learned to make quilts and her quilts were so beautiful. Each of us were the recipients of a beautiful quilt made with love. It wasn’t just her children who were blessed with these gifts. Some made their way to the Children’s Hospital in London, ON for the sick babies. One year she made Christmas stockings with a little baby doll in each one. These were given, by the nurses, to babies born over Christmas. She made more quilts and these she gave to a nurse at the hospital in Yorkton, so that if a baby who was sick or newborn needed a blanket, there would be one there for them. Mom could also knit and her sweaters were legendary among her children as she knit them for all of the children. The most special ones were the ones she knit for each of the babies to come home from the hospital in. One year she knit over thirty pairs of mittens and gave them away to the Church to be distributed to the Sunday School children so that their hands would be warm. Mom never wanted fanfare, never wanted anyone to make a big fuss over her. She was a quiet, beautiful soul who was always there, loving each one of us. People who took the time to get to know this beautiful woman, never regretted it. She was truly a gift who will never be forgotten and will be forever missed. In accordance with Betty’s wishes, a private family memorial service and committal service will take place at a later date. Friends so wishing may make donations in Betty’s name to the Children’s Wish Foundation or the charity of one’s choice as tokens of remembrance. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome. com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

on the family homestead, near St. Demetrius Church, in the Hryhoriw District near Preeceville, SK. Peter was very proud that both his grandfathers, Paul Stachiw and Mykyta Banadyga were instrumental in founding the school and church in the Hryhoriw District, although he was only able to attend school until Grade Nine, as he was needed to help on the farm. Peter and his parents farmed near the Stachiw family homestead (Century Farm 2006) until 1947 when they bought land near Leslie, SK. In order to move everything between the two farms, Peter needed to ride his bike from the new farm back to the Hryhoriw District to pick up the tractor and his mother, Margaret. This was just one example of his life long sense of commitment, duty and responsibility. In 1970, Peter met Ellen Visser, marrying in 1971. Together they raised three children on the farm, John, Marcia and Heidi. When Peter’s health began to deteriorate, they moved to Foam Lake in 1987, and sold the farm to Carl Kristjanson in 1988. While in Foam Lake, Peter and Ellen kept an immaculate garden. Peter was very proud of his garden, and although he was a very shy and quiet man, he came to life when showing it to his grandchildren and letting them sample the berries. With Peter’s health continuing to fail, he and Ellen moved to Yorkton to be closer to doctors and hospitals. Despite his health concerns, Peter remained independent and precise in all his endeavours which included renovating their homes, both in Foam Lake and Yorkton. He and Ellen continued to keep the yard, home and garden in perfect condition. The last few years saw Peter’s health declining rapidly, until he was called to rest on the morning of Monday, June 13, 2016. Peter was predeceased by his brother, Orest (in infancy), his mother, Margaret and his father, Stanley. He leaves to remember his life with love, his wife of forty-five years, Ellen of Yorkton, SK; his son, John of Winnipeg, MB; his daughter, Marcia of Moosomin, SK and her children, Kristen and Emily; and his daughter, Heidi (Brian) of Yorkton, SK and their children, Hayden and Grace. Funeral Services were held on Friday, June 17, 2016 from the Chapel of Christie’s Funeral Home in Yorkton, SK with Father Bohdan Lukie, C.Ss.R. officiating. The responses were led by Peter Kobylka. The Cremation Committal followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery, Yorkton, SK with Peter’s grandchildren, Hayden Russell, Grace Russell, Kristen Weedmark and Emily Weedmark serving as the urn bearers. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

She then moved to Yorkton where she worked at a restaurant. She was introduced to Emil Platz of Birch River, MB by her future sister-in-law. Victoria and Emil were married in Melville, SK on July 13, 1947. She moved to Birch River, MB to work alongside Emil on their farm; there they raised three children. Besides milking cows and selling cream and eggs, she always planted a large garden and spent many summer hours canning and putting up preserves, especially from the large raspberry patch. In 1974 Emil and Victoria sold the farm and retired to Melville, SK. Victoria continued to enjoy gardening and was very proud of her immaculate yard. She enjoyed travelling to spend time with her family and grandchildren. She loved fishing, camping and travelling with her family, even when the cot collapsed in the tent with her grandchildren. Victoria became an avid sports fan, especially of hockey. For many years, she was a season ticket holder of the Melville Millionaires. In 2002 Emil and Victoria moved from Melville to Yorkton and became residents at the Fairview Arms Seniors’ apartments. Emil passed away in 2003. PLAN OF THE WEEK
PLAN NUMBER 7-4-1004 MULTI GABLED ROOF LINE This attractive two-
storey family home, with its multi-gabled roof line, exhibits loads of curb appeal, and includes all
the conveniences that today’s family expects. Entry is through a covered porch flanked
by brick-based pilasters with an 11-foot ceiling. Inside the foyer, the coat closet is to the right, near the den or fourth bedroom, which is ideally located to serve as a home office. Just beyond the U-shaped staircase leading to the second floor is the open-plan great room complex. The great room itself boasts a gas fireplace, as well as a large window looking out to the covered patio and the back garden beyond. The dining room features a lofty doubleheight ceiling and is separated from the kitchen by a generous prep island with a double sink and dishwasher. The L-shaped counter configuration will spell efficiency for the cook, and a corner pantry will provide extra storage space. Tucked behind the staircase is a two-piece powder room. The laundry room, located behind the foyer coat closet, includes optional cubby holes for storage, and has access to the three-vehicle garage. Upstairs, the master suite features a window with an extra-deep sill that looks out on the back garden. The ensuite includes a soaker tub with its own window, as well as a glassed-in shower stall and double basins. The secondary bedrooms share a three-piece bathroom. Bedroom No. 2 boasts a window with an

Finding Al Capone’s local connection Did Al Capone hang out in Saskatchewan? That is the question posed by a 2015 documentary about the legendary gangster produced and directed by Regina filmmaker Kelly-Anne Riess. Although the film was not screened, nor nominated for an award, at the 2016 Yorkton Film Festival, it was a selection and it certainly has local relevance. Several Yorkton residents make appearances and there is a good deal of footage from the city, including the “catacombs of this newspaper’s building. Moose Jaw, of course, has laid claim to the notorious gangster to build an entire tourist industry, trading on the moniker “Little Chicago, which it earned in the 1920s for being a distribution hub for the illegal booze trade between Canada and the United States. There is little question that Saskatchewan was heavily invested in supplying whiskey to our parched American neighbours. Riess explores this alleged connection thoroughly, tracing the routes the liquor traveled and the people who distilled and sold it. She tells the eyewitness stories of people such as a

barber who claims to have cut Capone’s hair (twice) and a dentist, who allegedly pulled the gangster’s wisdom teeth. Yorkton, as home to the Bronfmann whiskey legacy, plays a large role in this story. In the film, the story is narrated by Leon Willey, a British Columbian actor. Willey, in period costume, interviews various people who claim personal knowledge of people who had personal contact with Capone in various places in the province. He also talks to historians and authors who add some expert credibility to the potential connection and visits archives that hold the clues to Saskatchewan’s dark past. The gaps are filled with cleverly designed graphics with an old-time look and unobtrusive reenactments. But, while Riess impeccably documents the booze trade, which is
historically undisputed and makes a strong case for Capone’s gang being here, such as the robbery and killing of a Bronfmann brother-inlaw at Bienfait, the man himself remains elusive. After his arrest, when probed about his Canadian affiliations, Capone famously said, “I don’t even know what street Canada is on. That, of course, is an evasive quip. There is no question he go whiskey from here, but whether he actually spent time in Saskatchewan remains for the viewer to decide. While the Yorkton Film Festival jury did not deem it worthy of screening, the documentary is definitely worth watching, particularly for the local connection. This film was made for CBC Television’s Absolutely Canadian and aired last summer. It is currently available for streaming on the CBC’s website. — Thom Barker
More mindfulness, less aggression I’ve noticed recently The Bug has a bit of a passive aggressive streak. The other day I had to leave the house, but couldn’t take her with me. I felt bad, so I got her a treat and took her out to the back yard. She cooperated, even sat down, which is the routine for getting a treat, but when I tried to give it to her, she pushed it away with her nose. She showed me. And isn’t that usually the way with passive aggressiveness? Who really gets hurt? I’ve never really thought of myself as passive aggressive, but seeing as I am in the process of examining my shortcomings, I figured it couldn’t hurt to have a look. First stop, Google. I was actually amazed at what psychologists consider passive aggressive behaviour. It is a long list, and, unfortunately, I saw a lot of myself in it even though I don’t often realize I’m doing it. I caught myself the other day, in fact, when I was telling my wife about something that hap-
pened at work. Maybe I am doing it right now by writing about it. In any event, someone arrived at work one morning wearing a lot of scent. I don’t know if it was a purposeful dousing of perfume or cologne or an ingredient in some shampoo or other personal care product, but to me, it was oppressive. I have a very sensitive nose and strong scents have a tendency to irritate my sinuses and eyes. I am not allergic, per se, but I find it thoroughly unpleasant. I am not alone, of course. It is so common, in fact, that many workplaces ban the use of personal scents. It started

in government facilities where public services are provided. It is standard policy in all health care settings and recently I’ve noticed even some private businesses have signs up asking people to refrain. A lot of those who aren’t affected really don’t get it. They think people like me recognize these scents as pleasant aromas, but are affected negatively by them. That’s not how it works. Most manufactured perfumes and colognes are as disgusting to me as smelling rotting garbage is to most people. So, getting back to my wife, I was telling her how annoyed it made me that someone came into the office wafting this offensive reek, when I realized how passive aggressive it sounded. She loves to wear perfume. In fact, she loves scents in all their various forms, potpourris, candles, Scentsy waxes, airsprays etc. Most of the time, she is considerate of my sensitivity, but she still occasionally applies the wretched stuff when I’m around, but its nothing to be passive aggressive about. No doubt The Bug is exhibiting her displeasure that I am going to leave her alone when pushes away her treat. Her passive aggressiveness makes me feel bad, but there’s not much I can do about it. The difference, of course is that I can be mindful of how my actions and reactions impact other people. Active aggression might actually be better than passive aggression—at least it’s understandable--but there are better ways of dealing with people than any kind of aggression.
