OSHANEK - Shirley Anne OshanekMarkov passed away peacefully in Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Thursday, February 2, 2017. Shirley is the daughter of William Oshanek and the late Mary Oshanek (nee Chopey). She was the loving wife of Alexander (Alex) Markov; loving sister of Sharon Oshanek of Medicine Hat, AB; honoured to be sister-in-law to Larissa Pereira (nee Markov) and Joel Pereira of Mississauga, ON; proud to be aunt to Amanda, Andrew and Julia Pereira of Mississauga, ON and niece to the many uncles and aunts in the Chopey and Oshanek families and cousin to their children. Shirley was born in Yorkton, SK and grew up in the area in the 1950’s and 60’s. She often spoke fondly of her early years on the farm of her grandparents (the late George and Anne Oshanek) and on spending time with her other grandparents (the late John and Pearl Chopey) in Springside, SK where her grandfather was stationmaster and where she came to know and love trains. After graduating from Sacred Heart Academy in Yorkton, she went on to obtain a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Saskatchewan (Regina Campus). She was a teacher in southern Saskatchewan for several years until 1976 when she moved to Toronto to be with Alex, the love of her life. Shirley and Alex lived in Toronto until 1981 during which time Shirley worked part time for Alex’s father, the late Dr. Bozidar Markov, as a medical office receptionist. Shirley and Alex moved to Medicine Hat in 1981 when Alex accepted a position in research and development at Defence Research Establishment Suffield and they have lived in Medicine Hat since that time. In more recent years Shirley and Alex have spent time in North Saanich near Victoria, BC where they have a second home. Shirley was an avid supporter for the development and preservation of wildlife areas and sanctuaries and for the prevention of cruelty to animals. In the early years in Medicine Hat she volunteered at Medicine Hat’s Police Point Park Interpretive Centre. She also had a passion for reviewing and collecting information…she was a voracious speed reader and was interested in and read everything from newspapers to biographies to aviation and military books and magazines to fiction (with a particular interest in fiction with military themes). While in Medicine Hat Shirley worked towards a second degree, a Bachelor of Education, which she obtained from the University of Regina in 1983. Shirley and Alex shared a life-long passion for aviation. In 1991 this interest led Shirley and Alex to create Amtech Aeronautical Limited an engineering consulting company specializing in the aeronautical, military engineering and automation areas. In no small measure, due to Shirley’s business acumen in all facets of the administrative and corporate management areas of the organization, the company has developed and maintained a skilled, experienced engineering team and a strong reputation with clients throughout Canada, the United States and abroad. Shirley’s and Alex’s investment interests also extend to real estate with a number of property investments in the Medicine Hat and Victoria areas. Shirley and Sharon were particularly close sisters, sharing common interests such as music and books. Shirley helped Sharon resettle to Medicine Hat in 1991. Sharon’s previous office training and experience were put to good use in the Amtech organization where the two sisters often worked on improving administrative and cost tracking processes. Since being diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2011, Shirley fought the disease tenaciously and courageously for six years, choosing aggressive and, at times, experimental therapies. The family is grateful that for most of this period of time she was in relatively good health and pain free. We are highly appreciative of the care and comfort provided by Shirley’s doctors, nurses, caregivers, support services and other staff at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, the Calgary Foothills Medical Centre, the Margery E. Yuill Cancer Centre, the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital and Medicine Hat Paramedic Services. We are especially grateful to Shirley’s family doctor (Dr. Filanti) of Medicine Hat, Dr. Best of the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, Dr. Foley of the Margery E. Yuill Cancer Centre and Dr. Ghatage of Tom Baker Cancer Centre and their associates and staff. A special thanks also goes out to the pharmacists and staff at Pharmasave in Crescent Heights, Medicine Hat. At Shirley’s request, there will be no service at this time. A Celebration of Life will be held in one year’s time. If desired, in lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate a donation to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, Suite 300, 1620 29 Street NW, Calgary, AB, T2N 4L7, or to the Canadian Cancer Society, PO Box 4613, Station E, Ottawa, ON, K1S 1P7. Condolences may be sent through www.saamis.com or to condolences@saamis.com subject heading Shirley Oshanek-Markov. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL AND CREMATORIUM, “The Chapel in the Park”, Medicine Hat, AB.

When God was making husbands as far as I can see, He made a special soulmate especially for me, He made a perfect gentleman, compassionate and kind, With more love and affection than you could ever wish to find, He gave my darling husband a heart of solid gold, He gave me wonderful memories only my heart can hold, He was someone I could talk to that no one can replace, He was someone I could laugh with till tears ran down my face, Next time we meet will be at Heaven’s door, When I see you standing there I won’t cry anymore, I will put my arms around you and kiss your smiling face, Then the pieces of my broken heart will fall back into place.

PLAN OF THE WEEK
PLAN NUMBER 2-3765 HERITAGE STYLE DETAILS This attractive threebedroom, two-storey home will make a welcome addition to any neighbourhood, thanks to the heritage-style details on the facade and the decorative woodwork at the front door. Entry is on the ground floor, through a covered porch. The foyer includes a roomy coat closet to the left, and the U-shaped staircase to the upper floor living
area is to the right. The open plan great room features a sloped ceiling as well as a gas fireplace. A doorway leads to the sundeck overlooking the front garden. The dining area includes two windows that look out to the side garden, and is separated from the kitchen by a large prep island. A doorway leads to a covered patio, providing a space for year-round grilling. The kitchen’s L-shaped counter configuration will spell
efficiency for the cook, and a roomy pantry will provide always-welcome storage space. The master suite is located at the front of the home, and enjoys a doorway to the sundeck. The ensuite includes a soaker tub with its own window, as well as a shower stall. Double basins will ease the morning rush-hour. The walk-in closet will provide lots of room for a couple’s clothing and accessories. The second and third bedrooms look out to the back garden and share
a three-piece bathroom. Plans for the ground floor include space for a secondary suite with two bedrooms, as well as a roughed-in three-piece bathroom. The laundry room is nearby. The den to the right of the foyer is well-located to serve as a home office. The double garage provides access to the foyer, as well as the side garden. Exterior finishes include horizontal wood siding, brick accents, ornamental woodwork and painted trim. This home measures 40 feet wide and 49 feet deep, for a total of 1,414 square feet of living space on the upper floor. Ceilings are nine feet high throughout. Plans for design 2-3765 are available for $675 (set of 5), $730 (set of 8) and $774 for a super set of 10. B.C. residents add 7% Prov. Sales Tax. Is filtering news a good thing? Saturday afternoon I ran across a tweet from CBC News that caused me a lot of alarm, initially, but then realized filtering the news was something I have also participated in from my own days working full time in the media. The question posed was: “Should media outlets report that an accused person is a refugee?” It was a result of a case this past week when a Syrian refugee was charged with multiple sexual assaults stemming from an incident at the water park at West Edmonton Mall. The thinking behind this is that very few refugees commit sexual assaults so why do we need to mention it and send people into hysteria with a false sense of worry every time they come into contact with a refugee. A cynic may see the leftist media is interested in suppressing crimes committed by refugees because to publicize it would be counter to their efforts. I can recall a summer, approximately ten years
ago (may have been longer), where I conducted an interview with RCMP officials and I acted upon a tip I received concerning gang initiation in Saskatchewan. In particular, there were two specific situations I inquired about: 1) people using the self serve option at gas stations being approached and then stabbed, surprisingly, after someone asks an innocent question to start a conversation, and 2) people out for a walk on the sidewalk experiencing a vehicle pulling up beside them at regular city speed and opening a passenger door, causing an assault. Neither scenario was denied, but I was told it would be in my best interests not to send people into a state of panic and have everyone afraid to go for a walk or pump their own gas by reporting on these infrequent crimes. I obliged and kept it off the air, but I made no secret in private conversations that I felt you should be vigilant and mindful of
MIKE STACKHOUSE mikestackhouse@hotmail.com
Stackhouse Soapbox some possibilities when engaged in those two activities. As I look back at keeping the gang initiations under wraps and compare it to the nonreporting of the background of someone who commits a sexual assault; I see a lot of similarities. Of course you should always be aware that just about anyone can victimize you at the worst possible time; but it doesn’t hurt to know that if you live in a city with a gang problem, here are a couple of very specific things to watch for. In Europe, where migrants and refugees have been accepted in massive numbers, we are seeing reports of similar crimes
where young people are being touched inappropriately. It doesn’t hurt to be careful, and there is a difference between careful and discriminatory. One of my favorite arguments is when someone says, “Most sexual assaults are committed by Canadians, not refugees.” True, but that’s like saying, “Most of the crime in China is committed by Chinese people.” I wanted to write more about Will Baker last week, but space didn’t permit it. Topically, he made the news again this week as it was deemed he is worthy of a discharge and no longer has to check in with officials to ensure he’s taking his medication. Baker, you
may recall, decapitated and cannibalized a bus passenger nine years ago. Ordinarily, a common person would think anyone guilty of such an unimaginable offense would spend the rest of his natural life in some sort of a facility where the public wouldn’t have to worry. Not in Canada. Instead, Baker (his new identity) has a second chance at life, even though his victim and the First Responder who later killed himself, aren’t given that same opportunity. I’m not trying to be insensitive to mental illness, but is this the new way of thinking? Let’s use pig farmer Robert Pickton as an example. Does anyone think he is of sound mind? Can he be fixed and allowed to assimilate back into society? Pickton, himself, no. The verdict is in. But a future Pickton, definitely, is going to have that opportunity and that should be unacceptable to all Canadians. Should Baker reoffend, all the
B9
people who signed off on letting him go free without conditions should be also looking at charges. if we added something like this to our legal vernacular, you’d see a lot fewer people released freely. If his freedom isn’t enough to appal you (and we get offended at so little these days that I can’t imagine any one reading this isn’t offended at Baker being free without a single condition), the fact that taxpayers funded his name change and are not allowed to know his whereabouts should frighten you. He may live in a home near you or your loved ones. I bet he doesn’t live anywhere near the judge, lawyers, and doctors who have deemed him a low risk to reoffend. Nice person mentions this week: Garrett Karcha (in case I missed you last time, and you actually have me wondering because I forget everything), Erika Strimbold, Derek Helberg, Michele Rein, and Dave Leaderhouse.
Chef Dez on cooking - food aphrodisiacs What better time of year is there to talk about aphrodisiacs than around Valentine’s Day? Aphrodisiacs can be foods that psychologically and/or scientifically help us feel... well “in the mood” for lack of better words. The search of the perfect combination is the desire for many on the 14th of February. Although each person’s own food preferences play the biggest influence on this romantic journey of cuisine, we will focus on some classic ingredients that fall into this category. The first ingredient that comes to mind is chocolate, and I am certain that many will agree. With its velvety smooth melting texture, this sweet addition to dessert choices will usually win over any other. Chocolate has been scientifically proven to contain ingredients such asphenylethylamine and serotonin: two chemicals that stimulate pleasure senses in the brain. This, plus the natural stimulant effect from the cafMedical/Dental Help
feine, makes for a wonderfully seductive and addictive ingredient. Fresh imported strawberries are usually available this time of year and having them dipped in chocolate makes for the perfect finish to a romantic meal. Oysters and caviar have also been considered aphrodisiacs for many years, and some argue it is because they are a good source of zinc, which contributes to maintaining male potency and fertility. However, there are many other foods high in zinc that are not considered aphrodisiacs such as lima beans, lentils and spinach; and I don’t believe making your Sweetheart a stir-fry of these ingredients will give a romantic impression. Cayenne pepper and spicy foods also play a large role as aphrodisiacs because they increase

the event on Sunday, February 19 from 2:00 5:00 pm. For 2017, The National Trust for Canada has chosen the theme of My Canada! Our country is rich in heritage, both within its landmarks and through the events which have shaped our past. This year’s guest speakers include Elizabeth Scott, WDM Director of Research, who will talk about work behind the scenes in curating a Canada 150 exhibit in Saskatchewan; and Terri Lefebvre Prince, City of Yorkton Historian, who will speak on Canada from pre-Confederation through to the settlement of the West and the founding of Yorkton. In addition, members of the Yorkton Chapter of the Saskatchewan Genealogy Society will be in attendance to share information on tracing family histories and answer questions relating to genealogical research. Everyone is welcome to celebrate Heritage Day at the Western Development Museum on Sunday, February 19. Regular Museum admission applies. Refreshments will be provided.
with little effort and some creative planning. The menu you decide upon does not have to be complicated, however it should be meaningful. Your effort should reflect the compassion you have for this person, and your thoughtfulness will be the most important ingredient. There is one last ingredient I should mention that is believed to
be an aphrodisiac: garlic... when eaten by both people. It is, however, considered a prophylactic when eaten by just one. Dear Chef Dez: I want to make chocolate covered strawberries for dessert for a Valentine’s dinner, but the last time I tried making them it was a disaster. Even though I took them out of the refrigerator ahead of time, the chocolate was still too hard and it broke off the berries with the first bite and fell onto the plate. What am I doing wrong? Chris D. Abbotsford, BC Dear Chris:
When melting your chocolate for dipping, melt butter in with the chocolate as well. Room temperature butter is much softer than room temperature chocolate, and thus will create a more palatable bite and will adhere to the berries. I normally add 50% of the weight of chocolate being used with butter. For example, if you are melting four ounces of chocolate, then also melt in two ounces of butter.
