DZUBA - Mr. Steve Dzuba of the Willowbrook district was called to eternal rest with his family at his side on July 30, 2016. He was 85 years of age. Steve was born in Bechard, SK, on June 12, 1931. He was the oldest of two children born to William and Pauline (nee Danyluk) Dzuba. At the age of 3-1/2 years, Steve lost his father and moved with his mother and sister, Annie, to the Rockdell District, SK. Steve grew up working on the Bodnar farm until he met his wife, Lillian Gulaga whom he married on November 25, 1954. In 1955 they were blessed with their first son, Alan and then moved to Alberta where Steve worked on the oil patch and steel mill. After the passing of his stepfather, Steve and family moved back to the Rockdell District to purchase the farm. In that time, they were blessed with three more sons, Mervin, Randy and Donald. During the early years of farming, Steve took on various jobs to help support the family and the farm. In 1963, Steve got hired with the CN in Melville and became a welder and metal fabricator. He retired in May of 1991. In August of 1991, his wife of 36 years passed away. Steve continued farming after his retirement. Neighbours would come to Steve for his welding expertise and he never asked for anything in return. He enjoyed the company of neighbours and would always offer them coffee, drinks or food. Steve looked forward to spending time with his family, especially playing the harmonica for his grandchildren and great-granddaughters. On June 12, he celebrated his 85th birthday with family. On July 19, Steve was taken to the Yorkton Regional Health Centre and then transferred to the General Hospital in Regina. He is predeceased by his wife, Lillian; his father, William and mother, Pauline; sister, Annie (Alex) Sawchyn; brothers, George and Tony Bodnar; nephew, Dean Sawchyn. Steve leaves to cherish his memory his four sons, Alan (Darlene), Mervin (Gail), Randy (Michelle) and Donald (Carla); six granddaughters, Mandi (Darryll), Ami (Nathan), Trista (Don), Jennifer, Stacey, Cassidy; two grandsons, Brendan and Darius; two great-granddaughters, Scarlett and Natalie; Half-brothers, Nestor (Kathy) Bodnar, Edward (Delores) Pilipow; Sisters-in-law, Marilyn & Audrey Bodnar. Prayers were held on Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton led by Rev. Fathers Bohdan Lukie & Methodius Kushko, C.Ss.R. The Funeral Liturgy was celebrated on Thursday, August 4, 2016 at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church with Very Rev. Bohdan Lukie, C.Ss.R. as the Celebrant. The cross bearers were Cassidy Dzuba (Granddaughter) and Scarlett McNary (Great-granddaughter). The epistle reader was Cassidy Dzuba (Granddaughter). The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Grandchildren, Stacey Dzuba, Mandi Dzuba, Ami Dzuba, Trista Dzuba, Brendan Dzuba and Jennifer Dzuba serving as the casket bearers. Memorials honouring Steve’s life may be made to St. Mary’s Church, Beaverdale or the Canadian Diabetes Association as gifts of remembrance. Condolences to the family can be sent to www.baileysfuneralhome.com.

MATUS - Francisca (Fran) Regina. September 7, 1935 - July 30, 2016. With heavy, sad hearts, the family of Fran Matus announce her passing on July 30, 2016. Fran was born in Kelfield, SK on September 7, 1935, the fifth of ten children born to immigrants Albert and Maria (nee Ziola) Rogal from Poland. Fran and her siblings walked two and a half miles to attend grades one to eight at Rialto School, a one-room country school house. Polish was her first language, but Fran became fluent in English as well while attending school. The closest high school was seven miles away in Meadow Lake. As there were no school buses at the time, Fran worked for her room and board in Meadow Lake in order to attend high school. She graduated high school with highest honours, also excelling at sports and was a brilliant mathematician. After high school, Fran worked for the Royal Bank in Meadow Lake and then was transferred to work at their branch in Banff, AB. While in Banff, she was offered a position with the Department of Northern Affairs and Natural Resources. She eventually accepted a management position at the Calgary office of the Department of Northern Affairs and Natural Resources. In her twenties, Fran spent many hours exploring Alberta and the beautiful parks area in her black VW beetle which she kept in immaculate condition. During a vacation at Pine Lake, AB, Fran was introduced to water skiing by a young fellow named Dave. Fran and Dave (David James Matus) were married in 1961, lived in an apartment in Calgary briefly, then purchased their first house in Crossfield, AB. While at Crossfield, Fran commuted to her office job in Calgary. Fran continued to work after the birth of their first child, but left her position after the arrival of their second child in 1964. Shortly after the birth of their third child in 1966, Fran and Dave purchased a farm near Rossburn, MB. Farming and trucking would be the mainstay of their lives for the next several decades. Two more children arrived while they lived at Rossburn. They spent nearly 10 years raising cattle, horses, sheep and dogs at the Rossburn farm. Fran spent many hard hours, milking cows (the old way!), helping Dave make hay, breaking horses to ride and drive and raising their five children. Their Rossburn farm bordered on Riding Mountain National Park, thus was a beautiful wilderness area, full of wildlife and… mosquitos the size of helicopters. They sold the Rossburn place and in 1976 and moved to a farm near Yorkton, SK, where the family still has land. Fran had a love for horses and dogs (Border Collies in particular) and regardless of where she lived, these were always a part of her life. Of all of Fran’s accomplishments, of her greatest pride and joy was her family. Fran’s exemplary work ethics demonstrated in school remained throughout her life and her strong faith in God sustained her through difficult times. As a result of a progressive and debilitating illness, Fran spent her final years in long term care. On July 30, 2016, Dave lost his beautiful wife, his children their loving Mother and her siblings a wonderful sister. Although her family finds comfort in knowing she is now free from the ordeal of her illness, she is deeply missed and lives in our hearts. Fran was predeceased by her parents Albert and Maria, brothers Stanley (in infancy) and John, Uncles Paul, Joe and Louis Rogal and several aunts, uncles and cousins in Poland. She is survived by her husband Dave, daughters Shelly (Reg) Vik, Maria (Darryl) Shuttleworth and Johanna (Brad) Matus and sons Monte (Colleen) and Cody (Heidi) and ten grandchildren; Amber, Alexandra, Rebecca, Dylan, Kyle, Evan, Ethan, Kaylin, Dustin and Amelia. She is also survived by sisters Alice, Cecilia, Anne (Brian) Cox, Jean, Tillie (Dale) Bauman and brothers Peter and Tony, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held for Fran on August 7, 2016 at 11 am, at the Church of God, near Acme, AB. The family would like to thank the staff of the Bethany Care in Airdrie, AB for caring for Fran in her final years and their compassionate support during her last days. In lieu of flowers, the family would be grateful if a donation be made to the Bethany Care Society. [https://bethany7754.thankyou4caring.org/sslpage.aspx?pid=298]

FALKOWSKY - Christine Ruth Falkowsky left this world peacefully on July 23, 2016 in Whitecourt, AB. She was able to fight her battle with cancer in her own home because of the care she received from her sister Sharon Loster who stayed by her side for approximately 3 months. Her children and friends were also there to lend a hand in her care. To them all we are truly grateful. Christine was born in Yorkton, SK on December 8, 1952 to Sylvia and the late Alf Falkowsky. She was one of four sisters. Completing her education in Yorkton, she moved on to Winnipeg and places in northern Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia and North West Territories before settling in Whitecourt and calling it home. She worked numerous jobs being a dedicated employee bringing positive energy to the workplace and putting others first. She loved to travel and explore local cultures. Some of her most wonderful experiences were when she could put her feet in the sand at a beach. She loved her garden, flowers and spending time with her friends. Her greatest joy was her children, her son Jesse (Whitecourt) and daughter Samantha (Edmonton). Christine was a free spirit who was loved by many. A loyal friend, a caring sister, a simple soul who got joy from the simple things in life. She lived her life with an abundance of gratitude and laughter. She will be greatly missed.

MONKA - Bruce. Hi Dad, They say the hurt of losing someone gets better with time. I will never get over not be able to see your smiling face, kind eyes and hear your soft voice. The family chain is broken and remains broken with people’s actions. I know you look down and wish the family could be together, but with death there is bullying, self-entitlement, and sibling greed. You know what I’m talking about; you went through it. Talk about greed not love. The chain will never be linked again. But with pain you find clarity, and I am so happy to be away from the negativity, manipulation and judgment. Dad, don’t worry about me, I am doing fine, loving life and all that it offers. I know you are always around me. Whether you are the beautiful butterfly that likes to sit in my flower box. The bluejay that wakes me every morning comforts me. Dad, it is so fitting you would come back as a bluejay. Thanks for all that you did in life, and all that you do in death. Until we meet again. -Love Always Shawna WESTERHAUG - In loving memory of Clarence Westerhaug, who passed away August 11, 2001. The smile we love is missing The voice we love is still A vacant place within our hearts That never can be filled. You left us precious memories Your love will be our guide You live on through your family You’re always by our side. It broke our hearts to lose you But you did not go alone For part of us went with you the day God called you home. -Lovingly Remembered by your wife, Sophie and all your family

VIEW FROM THE CHEAP SEATS

other questions, which I like because I can have a semantic field day with it without actually answering the question. First of all, is it actually possible to “do nothing? I tried it the other day, and noted that even when I am ostensibly “doing nothing, I am thinking, observing, contemplating, seeing, breathing, hearing etc. Even ascetics, who spend their days in quiet meditation, are seeking enlightenment, or Nirvana or God or something. In fact, even the way the question is phrased implies that nothing is something you are doing. “What are you doing? “Nothing. Anyway, let’s assume by doing nothing we mean passive activities such as meditating or watching TV (not documentaries or news, but something mindless such as game shows or Oprah). Is it ever appropriate? Well, now, doesn’t that just open another can of semantic worms? Appropriateness, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. And, of course, by eye I mean brain because the eye is actually just a gatherer of information that then gets interpreted by the brain. The short answer to the original question is, yes, doing nothing is a good use of time. The best argument for that position is perhaps sleep. Notwithstanding the dreaming phases of sleep, which I view as a second life I lead and is definitely “doing something, sleep is as close as we ever get to actually doing nothing and is an essential activity of living. Ultimately, I think a case could be made that living itself is doing nothing. Living, and thereby all the activities that flow from it, become involuntary when you look at it in that light. In that sense, doing nothing is not only an appropriate use of time, but the only appropriate use of time, because the alternative is dying, which doesn’t to anything

for anybody. But that is a semantic argument for another day.

-Thom Barker

Rare time to find

Doing nothing is rarely a case of actually doing nothing. For example, often I lie awake at night doing nothing, unless being prone is something, but my mind is active, too active for sleep. And that is the thing of those times a person just sits on the steps and watches the sunrise, or the sun set, physically it is a point of inactivity, but the human mind rarely goes to a place of quiet. I suspect that is very much what Eastern philosophies espouse, finding a place where the human mind quiets to the point we can fully relax. It is not easily achieved. Often, with a pickerel jig in the water and no walleyes interested in it, I have sat in an easy chair and relaxed, to a point. My mind does not quiet often. There is always random thoughts of what might go on the front page of the paper in a holiday-shortened week, who the culprit is in the mystery book I am reading, how a spot such as Saltcoats Regional Park would be ideal for a disc golf course, and the list goes on and on. Doing nothing is great in the sense the body just relaxes. You are not sweating on a plus 28 days throwing discs, you are not writing yet more words for the newspaper to the tune of thousands per week, you just lean back and let muscles chill. But to achieve that state for the mind, a point where you are just there as a part of the cosmos, an evolutionary creation amid the varied elements which have randomly come to be, relaxed, thinking of nothing, that moment of complete quiet, that is as elusive as the dragon, the sprite and the unicorn. And that is just something else to think about.
