DICKER - The Dicker family wishes to share the sudden passing of Peggy Dicker on January 30, 2018. She was predeceased by her son, Doug; parents, George and Gladys Beattie; father and mother-in-law, Frank and Ann Dicker; her in-laws, Ed Snyder, Fred Dicker, Pat and Bernie Willey, Hal and Betty Short, Thelma Beattie, nephew Bob Short and niece Sharon Willey. She will be lovingly remembered by her dear husband of 68 years, Bill; son Jim; grandson Dustin (Elk Island, AB); daughter-in-law Jann (Antler Lake, AB); two great-grandchildren, McKenzie and Dylan; sister Mildred Snyder (White Rock, BC); brother George Jr. (100 Mile House, BC), brother Herb (North Vancouver, BC); sister-in-law Shirley Dicker of Edmonton; she will also be lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews. Born Margaret Rose Beattie on May 14, 1927 in North Vancouver, one of four siblings. Her father George was a World War I veteran and fought at Vimy Ridge. As a young woman she worked at the Burrard shipyards as a payroll clerk. In her twenties, Peggy was sent on a blind date with Bill while he was taking refrigeration training in Vancouver. After a brief courtship, they were married in Vancouver on March 12, 1949. After a two year stay in Edmonton, they moved to Yorkton where Bill started Northeastern Refrigeration. Peggy was a keen bowler, a sport she enjoyed for many years. She was also a member of the Pythian Sisters and a member of the First Baptist Church, serving on the board for a number of years. Peggy and Bill enjoyed many years at their cottage at Madge Lake, especially the Christmas season. She loved to garden and to host coffee parties for neighbours and friends. She and Bill also enjoyed many years with Fred and Shirley Dicker at their time-share at Fairmont Hot Springs. She was a dedicated supporter of the families snowmobile adventures, with her famous salmon sandwiches and thermos of coffee, all for family togetherness. Bill was an avid hunter and on a whim in 1994 Bill entered Peggy’s name in a draw for hunting moose at Madge Lake. Sure enough, her name was drawn and away they went. Coming around a corner, lo and behold there was a moose. Bill had already used his tag, so he told Peggy to load the gun and soon after the moose was tagged. The bruises on her shoulder lasted a week. Peggy has a fierce love and loyalty for family and friends, through thick and thin. She led a fulfilling and wonderful life, right up to the end. Peggy was an excellent cook and a tireless homemaker. She will by dearly missed by family and friends. The funeral service was held on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 from the First Baptist Church in Yorkton with Pastor Steve Rosluk officiating. Organist, Grace Fandrey, led the congregation in the singing of the hymns ‘The Old Rugged Cross’, ‘In the Garden’ and ‘In the Sweet By and By’. Son Jim was the urn bearer. In Loving Memory Of a Very Special

When God was making husbands as far as I can see, He made a special soulmate especially for me, He made a perfect gentleman, compassionate and kind, With more love and affection than you could ever wish to find, He gave my darling husband a heart of solid gold, He gave me wonderful memories only my heart can hold, He was someone I could talk to that no one can replace, He was someone I could laugh with till tears ran down my face, Next time we meet will be at Heaven’s door, When I see you standing there I won’t cry anymore, I will put my arms around you and kiss your smiling face, Then the pieces of my broken heart will fall back into place.

Miss You So Much Your loving wife, Sonia

PLAN OF THE WEEK

PLAN NUMBER 1-3674 ROOM FOR GROWING FAMILY The plans for this home include an unfinished basement, which could serve has extra storage space, more room for a growing family or a secondary suite for revenue. The covered entry leads into a foyer with a coat closet ahead on the right. Across from the closet is an L-shaped stairway to the unfinished basement, separated from the great room by a half wall. The great room, with sliding glass doors to a covered deck, includes a gas fireplace, making the room a magnet for

family activities in the cooler months. The covered deck will be ideal for al fresco meals and year-round grilling. A large window in the open plan dining area looks out to the back garden. An optional buffet offers extra space for serving and storage. The kitchen is divided from the great room and dining area by a work island with double sinks and space for the dishwasher. This will allow the after-meal clean-up crew to watch TV while they work. They will also appreciate the walk-in pantry and the L-shaped counter configuration, which will save steps. Off the kitchen is the

laundry room, which includes a shelf for sorting and folding. A coat closet will provide space for gear, and the doorway to the double garage means the laundry room can double as a mud room. The master bedroom is reached through a square archway from the great room. Overlooking the back garden, it includes an ensuite as well as a spacious walkin closet. The ensuite boasts a soaker tub in its own bayed-out niche, as well as a shower stall. The double basins will ease the morning rushhour. The two secondary bedrooms, also reached through a square arch-

way, share a three-piece bathroom. Bedroom No. 3 has a built-in desk and bedroom No. 4 features an extra-wide window sill. A linen closet is located near the entrance to the master bedroom. Exterior finishes include wood siding with painted trim and brick accents. The gable ends are clad in wooden shingles and feature decorative brackets. The painted wood pilasters that flank the entrance have brick bases, echoing the brickwork on either side of the garage door. This home measures 40 feet wide and 65 feet, four inches deep. Ceilings are all nine feet high. Living space, not including the unfinished basement, totals 1,646 square feet. Plans for design 1-3674 are available for $795 (set of 5), $860 (set of 8) and $912 for a super set of 10. B.C. residents add 7% Prov. Sales Tax. Also add $35.00 for Priority courier charges within B.C. or $65.00 outside of B.C. Please add 5% G.S.T. or 13% H.S.T. (where applicable) to both the plan price and postage charges. Our NEW 50TH ANNIVERSARY Edition of the Home Plan Catalogue containing over 400 plans is available for $15.50 (includes taxes, postage and handling). Card element adds much to chess foundation Over the years there have been literally hundreds of attempts to improve on the game of chess. Most are at best a momentary diversion for players, something new to try, but soon to be forgotten. There are a few which, at least to me, have elevated themselves to being worthy standalone games; Omega Chess, Plunder Chess, Spartan Chess and Knightmare Chess among them. Eternal Kings appears poised to join that group of worthy games built upon the foundation of chess. The game is recently created by Rolando Issa, and he has come up with a rather interesting take on chess; one with a fantasy theme attached. “Shambahala looked out over the muddy field. A few hundred yards apart, the two armies stood arrayed for battle. Considering the band of miscreants and rogues he had collected, his own army looked pretty good. Only a little nervousness was to be seen among the less-experienced men. Across the field, however, the opposing force appeared skittish, constantly shifting position. It was not fear though, that made his foes so restless. Rather, the horde of the earth’s elemental army was merely eager for the slaughter to begin,” states the ruleset ‘fluff.

YORKTON BOARDGAMERS GUILD yorkton_boardgamers_guild@hotmail.com “Still, if he were to have any hope of pressing his claim, he must pass through this unseemly horde. After all, one must be victorious on the field of battle, if one hopes to claim his rightful place among the eternal Kings …” To begin with Eternal Kings is a card game. Now that is not new, but it does provide a lot of options in terms of game play. Here players create an array of chess pieces based on cards; the pawn card moving, at least initially as a pawn, etc. While the game comes with preconstructed lay-outs, there is the ability, once you know the game, to customize your pieces (cards). The cards here are very nice. The art is outstanding. If there is an issue, it is that the borders are black. Black bordered cards tend to end up with the finish chipping and scratching, and because that reveals the white paper and the smallest nicks show. What that all means is that you may want to immediately sleeve

these gorgeous cards. On a positive side, the board is mouse pad material (lesser density rubber composites -open cell styrene, butadiene rubber or open cell SBR) with fabric bonded to the upper surface). The material is an ideal material for almost any abstract strategy game, (my Omega Chess and Onitama being existing examples in my collection). In the case of Eternal Kings the board is large (8X8), and highly functional. Now back to the game play. You start by constructing your own unique deck of cards, (once you grasp the basics as noted), then by using the card abilities you attack opponent cards via well-known chess moves. Each player builds an ‘army’ of eight pawns, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, a queen and a king, and places those cards (creatures) on the board. When building your army, you can choose from over 48 unique types of creatures. Each type of creature has a unique move

set and abilities that they can perform. If you are already familiar with chess, you will recognize many of the mechanics in Eternal Kings, but there are some fun twists. In addition to the basic piece movements, special ability cards chance how an attack takes place, and what the result may ultimately be. It changes the pure abstract nature, because the special cars are held in hand. That may not sit well with a diehard chess player, but it does even the playing field a bit between players of different chess skill levels. The ability deck is also customizable before playing. These ‘ability cards’ are cards that you can randomly draw from during the game that allow your creatures to perform additional actions. There are over 40 unique ability cards to choose from. Thanks to the customizable aspect of Eternal Kings this one is hugely re-playable, since chess itself offers so much variation game-to-game to start with. That the cards are gorgeous also certainly helps in terms of aesthetics, especially when on the aforementioned board. If you like chess, but want a bit of a boost via cards, with that pregame deck build to explore, Eternal Kings is a definite winner.
