SOMMERFELDT - Edna Marie Sommerfeldt went home to her Saviour on Sunday, March 12, 2017 with her family by her side. She was 88 years of age. Edna was born the middle daughter of Michael and Alice (nee Ewachow) Kindratsky on February 1, 1929 on the family farm south of Hyas, SK. She grew up on the farm and attended Westerland School. Edna left the farm at the age of 16 to move to Canora and work at the Silver Grill Cafe. It was there she met Joseph Vowke and fell in love. They were united in Holy Matrimony at Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canora in 1947. Joe and Edna were married for 14 years, living in Canora, Prince Albert and finally Yorkton. Joe passed away suddenly in September, 1962 of a heart attack, leaving Edna seven months pregnant with their only child. With the support of her family, Edna courageously gave birth to her daughter, Joelann Marie and devoted her life to raising her in a loving home. In 1973, Edna met Marvin Sommerfeldt and they were united in Holy Matrimony. Marvin was a wonderful husband to Edna and father to Joelann. Edna and Marvin lived their married life of 38 years together in Yorkton until Edna’s health began to fail due to dementia. Edna spent her remaining years as a resident of the Yorkton and District Nursing home at Weber House until her passing. Marvin passed away on November 9, 2013 at 97 years of age. Edna loved working as a sales clerk at The Metropolitan Store and Croll’s Department Store. She was an active parishioner of St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church and later became a parishioner of St. Gerard’s Roman Catholic Church. She was also a member of the Catholic Women’s League of Canada. Her faith was her anchor her entire life. She shared her love of her Lord with her three granddaughters, all her pride and joy. Edna was an amazing cook and baker who loved to share her creations with family and friends. She earned the nickname ‘Baba Bee’ because she was always busy taking care of everyone and happy to share her Ukrainian heritage. Everything she said and did was with love. Nevertheless, she was always to the point and never sugar coated her opinions. She loved gardening, canning and crocheting. Being a homemaker was her expertise. Edna enjoyed watching golf, curling and her granddaughter’s dancing. Edna and Marvin enjoyed trips to Minot and spending time with family and friends. Edna is predeceased by her parents Michael Kindratsky, Alice Hutzul and Tony Hutzul; her first husband, Joe Vowke and her second husband, Marvin Sommerfeldt and by her sister and brother-in-law Bill and Emily Fesyk. Edna leaves to celebrate her life her sister, Rozella (Dennis) Spelay of Yorkton; her daughter, Joelann (Grant) Pister of Rhein and their children, Charlsie (Maurice) Ogaick of Saskatoon, Brianne (Eric) Urzada and her great-grandson, Winston of Regina and Paige Pister (Cory) of Shields; her stepchildren, Dale and Diane Sommerfeldt of Saskatoon, Don Sommerfeldt of Edmonton, Debbie and Kevin Young of Yorkton, Sharon (late Brent) Nabozniak of Saltcoats and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and the staff of Weber House, Yorkton and District Nursing Home that lovingly cared for Baba Edna. DESROCHES Mrs. Sheila Desroches of Yorkton, beloved wife of Tom Desroches, passed away peacefully with family at her side at the age of 81 on April 9, 2017 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. She was the eldest daughter of Ross and Mary Houston born on August 17, 1935 in Flin Flon, MB. It was in Flin Flon that Sheila completed her education and was involved in tap dancing, highland dancing, girl guides and violin. She moved to Yorkton in 1953 and graduated with her Registered Nursing diploma in 1956. From the stories she told, Sheila had a lot of laughs and formed many strong friendships with her nursing friends that have lasted a lifetime. It was also during this time that she was set up on a blind date with her future husband, Tom Desroches. After her graduation in 1956 Sheila worked in Yorkton and Wadena. On June 1, 1957 they were united in marriage at St. Gerard’s Church in Yorkton, SK. The sign on the bumper of their wedding car read, “watch Canada’s population grow”…and grow it did!! It was here in Yorkton that they built their first home and started a family. Over the course of the next 14 years Sheila and Tom had 8 children, 4 boys and 4 girls. They moved from Yorkton to Norquay to a farm outside of Sturgis finally settling in Sturgis in 1971. They resided there for over 35 years. Sheila was very active in both her kids’ lives and the community. She spent countless hours at the rink with five kids playing hockey and four in figure skating. Amidst the chaos of raising 8 active kids, cooking meals, gardening, maintaining a small farm and the odd child breaking a limb, Sheila was always patient and calm. She was truly an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, friend, daughter, sister…she was a true example of grace and faith. When she found time to relax, Sheila enjoyed reading, knitting and going for a Sunday drive. She also loved watching football and curling. In later years Sheila and Tom enjoyed time together travelling, camping with their holiday trailer and attending numerous fiddle competitions. Her faith was an important part of her life and she was a member of the CWL for over 50 years and was considered an honourary member. In 2007 Sheila and Tom moved back to Yorkton. Here she reconnected with many nursing friends, enjoyed visits from her family and most recently moved to Yorkton Crossing. Sheila was predeceased by her son Herb, grandson Jarrod, parents Ross and Mary, in-laws Herbert and Margaret, sister Kathleen, brothers-in-law Dave, Jack, Jerry, Ernie, sisters-in-law Rose and Margie. Sheila is survived by her husband Tom, children Karen (Darwyn), Glen (Donna), daughter-in-law Bettyann, Kathy (Peter), Pat (Tenley), Phil, Maureen (Tim), Theresa (Troy), her sister Barb, brother-in-law Art, sisters-in-law Yvonne, Joan and Anita, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Sheila will be dearly missed and always loved and cherished. The Prayer Vigil was held on Monday, April 17, 2017 at St. Gerard’s Roman Catholic Church in Yorkton with Nicole Fedorchuk serving as the cross bearer and the reading given by Alex Carlson. The Funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at St. Gerard’s Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Francis Hengen as the Celebrant. The cross bearer was Jordan Desroches and the readers were Megan Fedorchuk and Luke Desroches. Serving as the gift bearers were Desirae Libke and Raemi Carlson. Asia Libke, Eryn Desroches and Jenelle Desroches led the general intercessions. The ushers were Alex Fedorchuk and Andrea Kutney. The pianist, Chris Fisher, led members of St. Gerard’s choir in the singing of the hymns. Members of the Catholic Women’s League, Sturgis and Yorkton branches held an honour guard. Honourary Bearers were Pat Fletcher, Marjorie Freiheit, Margaret (Dolly) Marshall, Mabel Purse and Jeanette Sabulsky. The interment followed in the Garden of Memories at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Phil Desroches serving as the urn bearer. Following the reception, Sheila’s children paid tribute in song. BILOKRELI - Nellie Bilokreli (Demkiw). The family of Nellie Bilokreli sadly announce her peaceful passing on Friday, April 14, 2017 in Saskatoon just shy of her 93rd birthday. Nellie was born on the family farm in Ethelbert, MB on April 24, 1924 to Paul and Mary Demkiw (Syrnyk). She enjoyed a happy childhood growing up in rural Saskatchewan and with her father employed by the C.P.R. as a section foreman, the family lived in several rural communities including Watson, Leroy, Denzil, Floral and Jansen. Nellie often shared the wonderful memories she had of growing up in Jansen and in later years enjoyed stopping in to drive through the town in which she grew up. In 1941 the family relocated to Theodore where Nellie completed her final year of high school. Immediately after completing high school she and her sister, Annie, left to attend Normal School in Regina. Because of the war, there was a teacher shortage and Nellie had only three weeks of training before she was sent out to teach at her first school. Nellie’s first teaching position was in Aaron, a small community in northern Saskatchewan. Following that post, she taught at several single room schools which included Kozbar (near Benito), Waldron and Stoneyview as well as an underground school in the Kamsack area. However, a certain young man named Murray Bilokreli, whom she had met in her last year of high school, drew her back to Theodore. In 1951 Nellie and Murray were married and together began building their new life. Nellie put her teaching career on hold to start a family but resumed teaching in Theodore in 1956 and continued until her retirement in 1979. Nellie was a dedicated and conscientious teacher. She loved her job and always had interesting and active classrooms. Nellie was an enthusiastic traveller who, when her family was young, coordinated annual summer vacations across Canada and the United States. There was often an educational aspect to the holidays she planned with the family going to Custer’s Last Stand, Barkerville - the home of the gold rush, the Plains of Abraham as well as the Maritimes where great explorers first landed. These family vacations eventually evolved and expanded to include the grandchildren and vacations to British Columbia, Disneyland in California, Disney World in Florida and Hawaii. Nellie also visited several countries abroad including England, France, Switzerland, Portugal, Spain and a trip with Murray to the Ukraine in 1991 to visit Bilokreli ancestors. Murray and Nellie also enjoyed trips to Las Vegas, where Nellie was usually quite successful playing the slots. Murray and Nellie had a wide circle of friends and very much enjoyed being in the company of others. They enjoyed playing canasta and troika games with the Polowicks, Sookochoffs, Derows, Hooges, Lysaks and the Leibrechts. When she was not entertaining or attending a social event, she spent her time gardening, knitting, crocheting and doing crossword and other word puzzles. She was an avid reader, a passion she passed on to her children, even going as far as ordering books from the Regina Library and having them sent to Theodore for Bryan and Charlene to read. She was a member of the Theodore United Church and taught Sunday school for many years. Nellie also volunteered as the secretary of the Whitesand Regional Park for a number of years. Nellie resided at the Parkridge Centre in Saskatoon for the past ten years where she received outstanding care and was treated with love, care, compassion, dignity, and respect. Always the teacher, Nellie would often correct the staff on their grammar. She enjoyed and took part in many activities in her new home such as the musical performances at Parkridge as well as the Christmas outings to the Festival of Trees and the Noon Hour Choir Festival. She especially enjoyed watching the school age children perform and of course never missed the excursions for ice cream. Nellie’s birthdays, Mother’s Day and Christmas always included family suppers. Nellie is survived by her son, Bryan (Donna) Bilokreli of Saskatoon and grandchildren, Melanie (Jason) Wagar of Saskatoon and Mandy (Jonny) Bast of Saskatoon; Charlene (George) Ferguson of Saskatoon and grandchildren, Braden Ferguson of Saskatoon, Erin Ferguson of Saskatoon, Jennifer (Jag) Dhanjal of Saskatoon and Brett (Jennifer) Ferguson of Saskatoon and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Marge (Bruce) Mihalcea of Regina, brother-inlaw, Jim Bilokreli and sisters-in-law, Edith and Dorcas Bilokreli. Nellie was predeceased by her husband, Murray, her parents, Paul and Mary Demkiw, her sister, Annie, her parents-in-law, Nickolas and Frances Bilokreli, brothers-in-law, John, Edward, Walter, Mike, Rudy and sisters-in-law, Helen and Eunice Bilokreli. Friends and family wishing to make a donation in Nellie’s memory may do so to the Theodore United Church or the Alzheimer’s Society. A Service to Celebrate the Life of Nellie Bilokreli was held on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 from Theodore United Church in Theodore, SK with Reverend Calin Lau officiating. The scriptures were read by Lorraine Lysak and Jason Wagar. Words of tribute were shared by Donna Bilokreli and grandchildren’s memories were shared by Melanie Wagar and Mandy Bast. The organist, Carla Madsen and members of the Theodore United Church Choir led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, “Nearer My God to Thee” and “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”. The Choir Anthem was “Just a Closer Walk With Thee”. The Interment Service followed in the Theodore Village Cemetery with Braden Ferguson, Brett Ferguson, Jagdeep Dhanjal, Jason Wagar, Jonny Bast and Jim Bilokreli serving as the casket bearers. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

PLAN NUMBER 7-41006 ATTRACTIVE TWO STOREY With an unfinished basement, this attractive multi-roofed, four-bedroom home offers lots of room for a growing family. The covered entry, set of by brick pillars, leads into a spacious foyer with a coat closet to the right. Adjacent, through an arch, is a two-piece lavatory. To the left is a den, featuring a raised book shelf in a bayed-out niche. Beyond the foyer is the great room, where the double-height ceiling adds a touch of drama and sets this room off from the dining area and kitchen, with ninefoot ceilings. The great room’s sliding glass doors lead to a covered patio and a gas fireplace will cast its glow into the dining area and kitchen. A prep island with a double sink and dishwasher separates the great room from the kitchen, and will allow the cooks to chat with family or guests while clearing up after a meal. The dining area features
large window that look out to the patio and back garden. A spacious pantry is close to the laundry room, which includes a useful shelf for sorting and folding, as well as a row of cubby holes. Through another arch is the master bedroom, with a view to the back garden. The spacious ensuite bathroom includes a soaker tub, a shower stall and double basins, always welcome during the morning rush hour. The toilet occupies a separate space. A U-shaped stairway to the floor is located off the foyer. Upstairs, a railing protects the area open to the main floor. Bedroom No. 2 will be sought after as it features a three-piece en-suite and a walk-in closet. The third and fourth bedrooms share a three-piece bath. A linen closet is close at hand. Exterior finishes include stucco and wood siding, and windows with painted trim. The entry is flanked by brick pillars, which are echoed by pillars that mark the covered patio in the back.
This homes measures 48 feet wide and 64 feet, six inches deep, for a total of 2, 608 square feet, excluding the unfinished basement. Plans for design 7-41006 are available for $955 (set of 5), $1025 (set of 8) and $1081 for a super set of 10. Also add $35.00 for Priority charges within B.C. or $60.00 outside of B.C. Individuals have said they do not intend to harm other people in the community when they discard used syringes; most will throw out syringes safely if there are safe choices available. Sunrise Health Region has installed safe needle disposal units in Yorkton and Kamsack to ensure everyone has a safe way of disposing of used syringes. In cooperation with the Town of Kamsack, a Needle Disposal Unit is located behind the Kamsack Shopping Plaza for individuals to safely dispose of their used syringes or sharps containers. Vaccinations have been saving lives for more than two centuries and are generally considered the most successful public health intervention ever devised. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that vaccines prevent more than two million deaths worldwide every year. Immunization prevents many communicable diseases. There have been a number of recent measles outbreaks in Canada. Many of these outbreaks are linked to a decrease in the number of children receiving vaccinations. Centre as well as on Betts Avenue. Only loose syringes or quart size containers will fit. Larger sharps containers can be taken to your local Public Health Office. “If someone picks up a discarded syringe and accidentally pokes themselves, the risk of contracting HIV or Hepatitis is low,” said Deanna Bartok, HIV Strategy Coordinator with Sunrise Health Region. “Everyone who uses needles has the same need to get rid of their used needles safely. Through the use of safe disposal methods, no one gets hurt unintentionally.” If a discarded syringe is found on the ground: • Don’t pick it up with your hands - use tongs, pliers or tweezers and pick it up with needle tip down and away from you.
• Place a hard plastic container or glass jar on a stable surface and place lid on top. • Take the container to your nearest Public Health Office. • Don’t throw the syringe or container in the garbage. • If you are accidentally poked by a discarded syringe, let the wound bleed freely. Do not squeeze, suck, scrub or rub the wound. Wash the wound with soap and water as soon as possible and proceed immediately to your local health centre. that is spread through the air. The measles virus is so contagious that if one person has it, 90% of the people near that person, who are not immune, will also become infected. One in 10 people with measles develops pneumonia and/or ear infections. One in 10,000 people experiences an infection of the brain called encephalitis. One in 3,000 people who contracts measles will die. Available information that is based in theory and not evidence has led to a significant amount of unwarranted worry about vaccine safety among parents. Theorybased information is not based on facts or credible research evidence. This type of information has led to myths surrounding the risk of immunizations. As a result, some parents are hesitant to immunize their children, or they may delay or refuse vaccinations for their children. The Saskatchewan Prevention Institute encourages parents to use evidence-based information to learn about vaccine safety and effectiveness. Evidence-based information is supported by conclusive research data. Healthcare professionals make decisions and recommendations based on valid evidencebased information that has been repeatedly tested by researchers with expertise in the field. Evidence does not support any link between vaccines and diseases such as autism, multiple sclerosis, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Parents can receive evidence-based information from healthcare providers (i.e., family doctors and nurses) and reputable websites such as: • Public Health Agency of Canada: http:// www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/im/
index-eng.php • Government of Canada: https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/ topics/immunization-vaccines.html • Caring for Kids: http://www.caringforkids. cps.ca/handouts/vaccination_and_your_child April 22-29 is National Immunization Week. Canadian children are immunized against 13 preventable diseases. These immunizations are safe and free of charge. They effectively protect children from common communicable diseases like tetanus, whooping cough, and measles. Before a child is 2 years old, he or she should have had 5 immunization appointments. To check Saskatchewan’s recommended immunization schedule, go to http:// www.saskatchewan.ca/ residents/health/accessing-health-care-services/ immunization-services. Before becoming pregnant, women should be up to date on all vaccinations. A mother’s immunity is passed to her baby during pregnancy to provide protection until the baby can be vaccinated according to the Saskatchewan vaccination schedule. Women should be aware of guidelines on vaccinations needed before, during, and after pregnancy. The best way to stay protected is to talk to your healthcare provider. Please contact Krista Kaminski at 306-651-4317 for more information.
