OSTAFIE - Mrs. Mary Ostafie of Yorkton, formerly of Canora and the Mikado district, beloved wife of the late Victor Ostafie entered eternal life on February 24, 2016 at the age of 93 years. Mary was born on May 16, 1922 in the Mikado district to Mary (Wilgosh) and Nick Trach. She was the youngest of 8 brothers and 5 sisters. Mary attended Bogucz School from Grade 1 to 8, and like all of her older siblings, she then stayed home to help with the farming chores such as milking cows, feeding chickens and pigs, haying, stooking, harrowing with horses and walking behind the harrows. On November 6, 1943, Mary was united in marriage to Victor Ostafie at St. Thomas Roman Catholic Church on the farm by Mikado, a church both had been members of prior to their marriage. Together, they made their first home on Victor’s grandfather’s farm. Their marriage was blessed with a daughter, Jean in 1944 and sons, Jimmy in 1947 and Ronnie in 1948. Mary and Victor operated the family farm together, sharing many of the duties. When harvest came, Victor would combine and Mary hauled grain with horses and when they bought their first self-propelled combine, Mary began to haul grain with a tractor. Mary and Victor moved to Canora in 1977 and continued to farm until 1985. Mary was a true member of her faith. She began singing with the church choir when she was 12 or 13. Mary served as a member of the Altar Society and choir leader for many years at St. Thomas Roman Catholic Church in Mikado. When they moved to Canora, Mary became a member of the Catholic Women’s League and once again, a member of the choir of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church. Besides the Church, Mary was also an active member of the Canora Hospital Auxiliary, the Canora Gateway Lodge Auxiliary and together with Victor they were members of the Canora Keen Age Centre. Mary held various positions within these organizations including President of the Canora Gateway Lodge Auxiliary for a few years. Mary enjoyed driving her car. She started driving before she was 20 and was able to continue driving until she was 91. For many years, she was the driver while Victor sat in the passenger seat. When Jean became ill in 2004, Mary made at least 2 trips to Yorkton every week until she moved to Yorkton in 2007 to be closer to her family. Throughout her life, Mary’s family remained very important and dear to her. Mary and Victor were always available to help Jean and Nestor whenever needed and enjoyed looking after and spending time with their grandchildren Debbie and David. In more recent years and especially after moving to Yorkton, Mary enjoyed spending time with her great-grandchildren, Brett, Braden and Brielle. Baba was always there to support and cheer on her great-grandchildren in their sports, school concerts and dance recitals. Mary enjoyed singing, reading, pattern dancing in her younger years, doing puzzles, sewing and quilting, evident by the quilts she made for each of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and godchildren. Mary was fortunate to be able to live on her own until February, 2016 with the help of her family and a few close friends. On February 5, Mary was admitted to respite care in Yorkton and later to the Yorkton Regional Health Centre for further care. Mary is lovingly remembered by her son-in-law Nestor Kyba, grandson David Kyba, granddaughter and grandson-in-law Debbie and Larry Kitchen and most precious great-grandchildren, Brett, Braden and Brielle Kitchen; her brothers and sisters-in-law of the Ostafie family; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Mary was predeceased by her husband Victor in 2000; her parents Nick and Mary Trach; her children Jean Kyba in 2009, Jimmy in 1947 and Ronnie in 1968; her sisters - Lillian Labinowicz, Ann Honoway, Julia Yaworsky and Nellie Ostafie; brothers - Elias, Stephen, Thomas, Casmir, Frank, Peter, Laurie and Mike; all of her in-laws of the Trach family and a number of the in-laws of the Ostafie family. A Prayer Vigil was held on Monday, February 29, 2016 at St. Gerard’s Roman Catholic Church in Yorkton with Rev. Fr. Francis Hengen officiating. The organist, Colleen Bourne led the choir in the singing of the hymns, “Amazing Grace”, Psalm 27, “Hail Mary, Full of Grace” and “How Great Thou Art”. The readings were offered by Debbie Kitchen. The Funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Canora, with Rev. Fr. Franklin Emereuwa as the Celebrant. The organist, Colleen Bourne led the choir in the singing of the hymns, “Amazing Grace”, “Hail Mary, Gentle Woman”, “Only A Shadow”, “May Flights of Angels”, “Serdeczna Matko” and “Hail, Queen of Heav’n”. The readings were given by David Kyba, Debbie & Larry Kitchen. Brett, Braden & Brielle Kitchen served as the Gift Bearers. arms of her daughter Julianne. She was seventy-nine years of age. Lorraine was born on Sept. 21, 1936 in the small town of Ethelbert, MB to John and Anne (Hrynkiw) Tycholis. She was the eldest of three children and remained a shining light to her parents throughout their lives. Over the years a precocious child grew into a formidable woman. Piano and singing lessons from a young age led to church performances and spots on the local radio in Dauphin, MB as an accomplished singer. She loved to sing and her voice was beautiful! Her beauty attracted the attention of Bjorn Thorsrud, visiting from Lillehammer, Norway and they quickly fell in love and were married on November 5, 1960. Together they opened Thorsrud’s Colour Centre in Yorkton, SK and remained in business together for over 42 years until their retirement. During their time together Lorraine and Bjorn traveled the world, laughed and loved. Lorraine’s passion for life and the arts saw her involved as a volunteer for decades. She sat on several boards and committees on regional, provincial and national levels. Some of which included: Chairperson for the Parkland Abilities Council in Yorkton, Chairperson of the Board of Governors of the University of Regina (the first woman to ever be elected to the position) and Canada Council for the Arts in Ottawa, ON. This is where she was the sole representative for Canada for the 43 member inter-governmental committee as part of her membership in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). She was the first Yorkton resident to be named “Citizen of the Year” in 1983 in recognition of her long-time public service. This led her to become an International Honourary Member of Beta Sigma Phi, an international women’s sorority. Lorraine loved to cook big meals for family gatherings and taught us that family around the dinner table is the best family to have. Her borscht recipe is heavenly. We will always love you sweet Lorraine. She will be deeply missed by her husband of 55 years, Bjorn; daughters: Julianne (Neil), Karen (Walter) and Sharon; grandchildren: Sarah (Aldrick), Kristian, Michael, Julian and Isabella, as well as friends and extended family whose lives Lorraine enriched with her beautiful personality and energy. She loved deeply, lived vivaciously and had a zest for life that we will all remember and admire! The funeral service was held on Saturday, February 27, 2016 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Rev. Walter Farquharson officiating. Son-in-law Neil Thom gave a tribute on behalf of the family and daughter Sharon read ‘O Loving God’. Pianist, Shani Apland led members of the congregation in the singing of the hymns ‘Amazing Grace’, ‘Give To Us Laughter’, ‘Jesus, We Have Come to the Lakeshore’ and the Hebrew Benediction. Honourary bearers were members of the Beta Sigma Phi. The interment took place in the Yorkton City Cemetery Columbarium with Lorraine’s daughters Julianne, Karen & Sharon serving as the urn bearers. Condolences can be left at baileysfuneralhome.com. Memorials were to the Alzheimer’s Society or to the Parkland Abilities Council.

HOLSTEIN - Albert Holstein, resident of St. Paul Lutheran Home passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday, February 21, 2016. He was 95 years of age. Albert was born on June 12, 1920 at Rhein, SK, son of Henry & Emilia Holstein. Albert pursued a lifelong career in carpentry with his dad and brother Johnny. They were well known in Yorkton as H. Holstein & Sons. They built homes, did renovations and built many ready-to-move homes. In 1941 he married Margaret Fossey and they were blessed with two children, Garry & Shelley. In their younger years they spent many weekends and summers with the family at the cabin at Good Spirit Lake. With Albert’s expertise at carpentry he helped Garry build two new homes for his family, one in Yorkton and one near Ebenezer. One of his last projects was building a new home that Shelley currently resides in which just happened to be next door to his own house. His loving wife Margaret passed away in 1982. Albert retired and met a wonderful lady that he would spend the next 25 years with, Klara Donnelly. He and Klara were able to see Chris and Amanda grow up right before their very eyes. Albert loved fishing and hunting and Chris shared the same passion. They spent many hours together and Grandpa taught Chris everything he knows (even with a few arguments here and there). Albert thoroughly enjoyed his coffee row companions and would sometimes go 3 times a day and taking Amanda along was a good excuse to go. Klara is a great cook and would prepare many of Albert’s favourite German dishes. When cancer appeared 15 years ago and with Klara’s help he was able to live at home for as long as he did, and for that we will be forever grateful to Klara. In loving memory of
Judy A. Chuchak It ’s been 10 years since you passed away, In sunshine and rain we remember you each day. Were it a 100 years, we’d miss you the same way, With an empty spot in our heart as we pray. Pressing for attention saying, “Baba”, come with me, Five grandchildren, two of whom you did not see. To hug and kiss with a love so sincere, Oh! How we’ve been cheated, you not being here. You were a wonderful wife, mother and a good friend, Why has God taken you so soon, we cannot comprehend. No author nor poet could ever express, How much we loved you and felt so blessed. Our loss is heavens gain, Our only comfort that eases our pain. We will meet again at heaven’s door, Rejoice we will with you, forever more. Miss your love so much now that you’re gone, We will cherish the memories and let them live on. Love from; Peter, Jennifer, Grant, Darryl, Jill, Jeremy, Kara, Stephanie, Isaiah, Faith and Joshua.

PLAN OF THE WEEK
At Your Service BUSINESS & SERVICE DIRECTORY
PLAN NUMBER 1-2669 A COZY TWO BEDROOM COTTAGE This cosy two-bedroom cottage includes an unfinished basement, offering extra space for a growing family or a mortgage-helping secondary suite. The covered entry, flanked by brick pilasters, leads into a foyer with an L-shaped stairway to the right. Directly ahead is the great room,
where a gas fireplace will make this room a magnet for family activities in the cooler months. Beyond sliding glass doors is a covered deck, ideal for al fresco meals during the summer. The kitchen and dining area are divided from the great room only by a prep island. The dining room features large windows that overlook the back garden, as well as easy access to the deck. The kitchen includes
plenty of counter space, as well as a walk-in pantry. Nearby is the laundry area, where a coat closet and access to the double garage will allow the room to double as a mud room. The master suite is located at the back of the home for privacy. The ensuite occupies a bayedout niche and includes a double sink, as well as a soaker tub and a separate enclosed show-
er. The walk-in closet is reached through the ensuite. The second bedroom overlooks the front garden, and is served by a three-piece bathroom. As well as the brick pilasters, exterior finishes include three more columns, painted in a contrasting colour to the stucco finish. The large window at the front is mullioned. This home measures 40 feet wide and 52 feet, eight inches deep, for a total of 1, 402 square feet. Ceilings throughout measure nine feet. Plans for design 1-3669 are available for $655 (set of 5), $710(set of 8) and $754 for a super set of 10. B.C. residents add 7% Prov. Sales Tax. Also add $35.00 for Priority courier charges within B.C. or $65.00 outside of B.C. Please add 5% G.S.T. or 13% H.S.T. (where applicable) to both the plan price and postage charges. Our NEW 47TH Edition of the Home Plan Catalogue containing over 400 plans is available for $15.50 (includes taxes, postage and handling). more closely did many observers realize that the man, too, was relieving himself against the pole. Carmona described the work as commentary on man and dog “marking their territory.” (2) A recent anonymously authored “confidential” book by a National Football League player reported that “linemen, especially,” have taken to relieving themselves inside their uniforms during games, “a sign that you’re so into the game” that you “won’t pause (even) to use the toilet.”
Can’t Possibly Be True
The popular Nell’s Country Kitchen in Winter Haven, Florida, was shut down again (for “remodeling,” the owner said) in December after a health inspector found that it had been operating for two weeks without its own running water — with only a garden hose connection, across its parking lot, to a neighbor’s spigot. It had also closed for a day earlier in 2015 because of mold, roach activity and rodent droppings (although management insisted that business had immediately picked up the day they reopened).
Weird News One Can Actually Use
In November, a perhaps- exasperated Centers for Disease Control attempted once again to tout a startlingly effective anti-HIV drug — after a recent survey revealed that a third of primary-care doctors said they had never heard of it. So, FYI: Truvada, taken once a day, said the CDC, gives “better than 90 percent” protection from risky gay sex and better than 70 percent protection from HIV acquired from the sharing of needles. Truvada is the only FDAapproved retroviral drug for retarding HIV (but its maker, Gilead Sciences, has declined to advertise it for that purpose).
