LAFFERTY - Mr. Joseph Thomas “Tom” Lafferty, resident of the Lakeside Manor Care Home in Saltcoats, SK, passed away on Tuesday, August 1, 2017. He was 96 years of age. Tom was born on March 29, 1921 in Marieval, SK, the son of Joseph and Marie Lafferty. He grew up in the Marieval district before moving to the Saltcoats area in 1939. Tom was united in marriage to Mildred (nee Blake) on December 14, 1946 at St. Andrew’s United Church in Yorkton, SK. The couple lived and worked on their farm in the Graham District until their retirement from farming in 1971. As well as operating his own farm, Tom worked for many farmers in the Saltcoats area and also ran a trucking business. He started hauling gravel for the Rural Municipalities and residents of Saltcoats and surrounding area. Tom hauled asphalt for the construction of the Yellowhead Highway #16 from the Manitoba border to Yorkton. During their years on the farm, Tom and Mildred milked cows and would deliver cream every Saturday evening to their customers in the town of Saltcoats. His nieces and nephews have fond memories of Uncle Tom and Aunt Mill treating them to a day at the Yorkton Fair every summer. Tom had a knack for keeping a mental inventory of what parts friends, family members and neighbours might need on their vehicles. He would then find the necessary vehicles to use for parts and strip them. A bit of a wheeler dealer, Tom was known to always find a home for all of the parts he had recovered by bartering with those in need. Tom was predeceased by his parents, Joseph Alexander and Marie Victoria (nee Flamond) Lafferty; his wife, Mildred; his brothers-in-law, Herbert Pierson, Greg Trembley and George Lyons; his sister-in-law, Rhoda (Adolph) Littman and one niece, Shirley (Gerry) Werle. He leaves to mourn his passing, his sisters, Mary “Emily” Pearson of Moose Jaw, SK, Yvette Trembley of Edmonton, AB and Marie “Alice” Lyons of Illinois, USA; good friend, Ralph Henderson; nephews, Larry (Lynn) Littman and their children, Amanda, Robert and Adam (Terrie) and Blake (Elaine) Littman and their children, Bonnie (Jerret), Julie (Darryl), Laura (Curtis) and Sarah; niece, Jean Littman; great-nephews, Kerry (Jennifer) Werle and Blaine Werle as well as many other nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, extended family and countless friends. A Memorial Service was held on Saturday, August 5, 2017 from the Saltcoats United Church in Saltcoats, SK with Reverend Walter Farquharson officiating. The organist, Ruth Datema, led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, “Give to Us Laughter” and “For the Fruit of All Creation”. The Cremation Committal followed in the Saltcoats Town Cemetery, Saltcoats, SK with Kerry Werle serving as the urn bearer. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan. KOROLUK - Mr. Mike T. Koroluk of Yorkton, formerly of Rhein, entered eternal rest on July 28, 2017 at the age of 93 years. Mike was born on the family homestead on February 19, 1924 to Theodore and Martha (Gnyp) Koroluk. Mike passed away surrounded by his family at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre on July 28, 2017. Mike attended the New Canadian School in the Rhein area for which he often reminisced about walking to school and still maintaining friendships with many that still resided in the Rhein area. Mike was also proud of his bicycle, for which he sold pelts from trapping so he could buy, what he referred to as “one of a kind” bicycle with balloon tires. As a young boy, Mike enjoyed trapping, hunting and playing ball. It was during a ball game that he met a young girl that he referred to as “the best short stop player ever”. That girl turned out to be Nellie Wlasichuk. They courted for several years before they got married on November 9, 1947. Mike began farming with his brother John where they worked together growing various crops while also raising livestock. That partnership lasted for many years. Mike and Nellie resided at the family homestead where they welcomed their first born, Judy. They then moved to the RM of Sliding Hills where they built the family farm and extended the family to welcome Jerry, Adrian, Bradley and Candace. Mike was a hard worker and he instilled those values in his children as they helped on the family farm. This included picking roots, stones and pitching hay bales or whatever else needed doing. Mike and Nellie enjoyed their first “warm Holiday” to Hawaii which they enjoyed very much. Mike served as a councillor for several years for the RM of Sliding Hills which included other committee projects. Picking mushrooms was something Mike thoroughly enjoyed as he seemed to know where all the good ones were. One of Mike’s favourite pastimes was checking crops and roads, where quite often Mike and Nellie would jump in the truck and they would be off to see how the crops were coming along. When John decided to retire, Jerry and Louise moved back to the farm where, with Mike and Nellie, they farmed together. This would lead to Mike and Nellie’s semi-retirement and eventual move to Rhein. Mike became involved in the community which included playing slow-pitch on a senior’s ball team and attending the Golden Agers Senior Centre where he developed new friendships. Mike cheered for the Toronto Blue Jays and enjoyed watching hockey and curling. Family was important to Mike, he was proud of them and never afraid to offer an opinion to his children. He loved the land that he worked and in turn it rewarded his family with many successful years of farming. When Nellie developed health problems in 1998, Mike took on the role as caregiver for which he devoted himself to the well being of his wife. Eventually they moved to the Bentley in Yorkton where they continued to live for 7 years. Mike was very involved at the Bentley, he played billiards and was known as the local “pool shark” that won many pool tournaments and games with family. He loved to read about current events and watch television. Mike always had a sense of humor, quite often the center of attention at family gatherings as he enjoyed being part of the entertainment!!!! As Mike’s health started to decline he moved to the Yorkton and District Nursing Home where he resided for the past 3 years. Mike is predeceased by his sisters Annie Rapchuk, Mary Koroluk (died at infancy), Mary Andrusiak, Lena Derkatch, Effie Boehm; brothers Bill Koroluk, John Koroluk, Alex Koroluk, Nick Koroluk, Steve Koroluk (died at infancy). Mike is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Nellie; Children: Judy (Don) Teniuk; Jerry (Louise) Koroluk; Adrian (Carleen) Koroluk; Bradley (Rhonda Rein) Koroluk; Candace (Derryl) Tendler; Grandchildren/Great-grandchildren: Jason (Pearl) Teniuk (Rhyse and Rylan Teniuk); Cory (Bonnie) Teniuk (Jordan and Austin Teniuk); Rachel (Dave) Binsfeld (Emma and Lyvia Binsfeld); Johnna (Ryan) Janzen; Jarett Koroluk; Shantelle Koroluk (Andy Katzberg) (Kaeden Koroluk); Derek (Michelle) Koroluk (Felix and Ruby Koroluk); Tyler (Melissa) Koroluk; Tegan (Shamus) Lee; Noah and Mikaela ReinKoroluk; Travis and Baylee (fiancé Garrett Byl) Tendler. Prayers were held on Tuesday, August 1, 2017 and the Funeral Service on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Rev. Father Rod Luciuk of St. Mark’s Orthodox Church officiating. The cantor, Michael Luciuk, led in the singing of the responses. The cross bearer was Rachel Binsfeld. The interment followed in the Garden of St. Luke at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Jason Teniuk, Cory Teniuk, Jarett Koroluk, Derek Koroluk, Tyler Koroluk and Travis Tendler serving as the casket bearers. Memorials in memory of Mike may be made to the Health Foundation as gifts of remembrance. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.baileysfuneralhome.com.

HAYWARD - Mr. Alan Hayward of Yorkton, formerly of the Atwater district, beloved husband of Aileen Hayward passed away July 30, 2017 at the age of 90 years. Alan was born in 1926 near Atwater, SK, the youngest son of George and Elsie (Lloyd) Hayward. He obtained his education at Fertile Belt School. He worked for a brief time at the mine in Flin Flon, returning to farm in the Atwater district. In 1953, on June 30, he married the pretty schoolmarm, Miss Aileen Cornell. Together they enjoyed their life on the farm, as well as two years working in Medicine Hat in the late 1950s. They joyfully welcomed their son Keith to their lives, and added a new “daughter” Debbie to the family when Keith and Debbie married in 1986. Aileen and Alan contentedly worked and lived on the farm till 2014, when finally, at their kids’ urging, they finally made the big move to Yorkton. The farm and the cattle were everything to Alan. There was nothing that came before these two things. Aileen would probably have to think long and hard to remember a year when they actually celebrated their anniversary or her birthday on the actual day!Even on Alan’s birthday, which he shared with his great-nephew Jeremy, company would often be sitting by the table for a birthday celebration, but waiting while the guest of honour made one more round in the field or hauled in another load of rocks or bales! Alan still had cattle up until 2014. They were his pride and joy. Alan did not have many interests or hobbies, but he did enjoy music. He was a proud member of the Welsh choir, and enjoyed listening to country music or gospel music. He enjoyed a good game of crib, and enjoyed visits with neighbors. He also followed the Toronto Blue Jays closely. Alan was a man of few words, but was always willing to help a neighbor if he could. He also enjoyed collecting tools, usually multiples, and had several of everything out in his quonset! Alan loved the farm dogs Hobo, and later Rover, both of whom mysteriously appeared and chose the farm as the place they wanted to call home. Alan also loved Abe, the large horse he won in a draw, and Keith and Debbie’s dogs Lady and Toby when they came to visit. Alan was predeceased by his parents, George and Elsie Hayward; his brother Clifford in infancy; his brother Denis in 1993; his sister Evelyn Ayers in 1995 and brother-in-law Willis Ayers in 2001; his grandson Nathan in 1995; his uncle Ernie Lloyd in 1993; nephew Ron Ayers in 2001; great-nephew Warren Ayers in 2012; and Debbie’s mother Mary Diakuw in 2011. He leaves his wife Aileen, son Keith and daughter-in-law Debbie, all of Yorkton; Debbie’s sister Margie of Saskatoon; his sister-in-law Mildred of Kelowna, BC; niece Marilyn and husband Rob Cannon of Watrous and their family; nephew David and his wife Peggy Hayward of Winnipeg; as well as long-time friends from the Atwater area, and new-found friends in Yorkton. Thank you for taking the time to visit Alan either in hospital or at the nursing home, those times meant so much to him. Thank you for the gift of your presence here today: Alan would be so pleased. “In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life: it goes on.” -Robert Frost

The Funeral Service was held on Friday, August 4, 2017 at Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Rev. Roland Legge of St. Andrew’s United Church officiating. The organist, Amanda Buhler led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, ‘How Great Thou Art’, ‘Be Not Afraid’ and ‘Day is Done’. Words of remembrance and appreciation were shared by Keith Hayward. Scripture readings and a tribute were given by Debbie Hayward. The interment followed in the Garden of Memories at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Keith & Debbie Hayward serving as the urn bearers. Memorials honouring Alan’s life may be made to the S.P.C.A. as gifts of remembrance. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.baileysfuneralhome.com.
