JOWSEY - James Ralph “Jim” Jowsey was born on October 24, 1925 on his parents’ mixed farm in the Eden District, north of Saltcoats, SK. Jim attended elementary school at Eden and high school at Saltcoats, graduating in 1942. He then went on to the University of Saskatchewan, where he completed a Bachelor Degree in Agriculture and Education, a Master’s Degree and then a Ph. D. from McGill University. He taught science at high schools and university as well as working about 30 years in Saskatchewan public service as a researcher. During his marriage to Beatrice Ely, they adopted two children, Harriet and Harold. The family lived in Swift Current and Regina, SK. Jim married Shirley Sather in July 1969 and they lived and worked in Regina until the early 1980’s. During his time in research work, his colleagues say, Jim carried so much gear there was hardly room for himself, let alone a passenger. He must have saved an empty corner in his vehicle though, because if he saw so much as a piece of 2 x 4 on the side of the road he had to stop and pick it up! Jim was tenacious and persistent in his hard work and was described to be a bit like a puppy with an old slipper. Once he got hold of a thing, he didn’t let go until he got results. Jim was also known as the biologist and co-author of “Wild Flowers Across the Prairies”. Jim served as a Member of the Senate of the University of Saskatchewan and St. Andrew’s College as well as the local church board. In 1985, Jim and Shirley retired to their farm near Saltcoats, where they conducted field tours and gave slide presentations related to the identification and preservation of native vegetation of the prairies. He was a member of Nature Saskatchewan as well as the Yellowhead Flyway Birding Trail Association which honoured Jim and Shirley with the designation of a small parcel of land within the Saltcoats Regional Park as the “J.R. (Jim) and Shirley Jowsey Wildflower Heritage and Conservation Area”. Jim and Shirley were members of the Laketown Leaders where Jim particularly enjoyed the gatherings around food, especially sweets prepared by some the ladies. That trait continued right to his 90th birthday party, where he enjoyed more icing than cake! After Shirley’s passing in 2014, Jim sold his home in Saltcoats and moved to Aspen Bluffs Villa where he passed away on the morning of November 17, 2015. Jim was predeceased by his parents, Ralph and Maude Jowsey; his first wife, Beatrice; his second wife, Shirley and his brother, John. He leaves to mourn his passing and celebrate his life, his children, Harold Jowsey and Harriet Pepper; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his brother, Hugh; his sister-in-law, Mildred Jowsey; his brother-in-law, Milton Sather as well as his nieces, nephews, many friends and fellow naturalists. A Memorial Services was held on Monday, November 23, 2015 from the Saltcoats United Church, Saltcoats, SK with Reverend Walter Farquharson officiating. The organist, Ruth Datema and members of the Saltcoats United Church Choir (and Friends) led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, “Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah”, “Teach Me God, to Wonder”, “For the Fruit of All Creation”. The Choir selection was “The Lord’s My Shepherd”. The Cremation Committal followed in the Saltcoats Town Cemetery, Saltcoats, SK. Friends so wishing may make donations in Jim’s memory to Nature Saskatchewan, the Saltcoats United Church or to the charity of one’s choice. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.
WOOD - Kathleen (Kay) Grace Wood. Kathleen Wood, known to her family and friends as “Kay”, passed away peacefully at Hillview Manor in Estevan on November 15, 2015, two months and three days after her 96th birthday. Kay was born on Sept 12, 1919 at the family farm near MacNutt, SK. Her parents, James and Ada Christie, had immigrated to Canada from Scotland and Ireland respectively. Growing up in the years of the Great Depression was difficult, but Kay always remembered her childhood years and her family with great fondness. Kay left home in 1938 to begin nurses training at the Brandon Mental Hospital. Further training followed at the Ontario Hospital of New Toronto, good preparation for the 42 year career which followed. In 1946 she returned to Manitoba to work at the Brandon Mental Hospital. On Valentine’s Day 1947 Kay met her husband to be, Harold Wood, a young soldier stationed at nearby Camp Shilo. They were married on September 4, 1948 in Brandon but resided in Shilo. Life in the military meant lots of transfers: a short stint at Camp Borden in Ontario, back to Shilo and then to Winnipeg. Two children, Ted and Jean, were born in this period. She was a dedicated mother and gave her children the guidance, support and love they needed growing up. In 1956, they left the military life and moved to a more stable life in Yorkton, where Harold had grown up. Kay began nursing at the Yorkton Auxiliary (the old airport) Hospital. In 1960 she did a year of study at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon in preparation for two new responsibilities in Yorkton: as Superintendent of Nursing at the new Psychiatric Centre and as Director of the School of Nursing. In 1966 she became director of nursing for the Yorkton Union Hospital, a position she held until her retirement in 1981. Upon retirement Kay was given an Honourary Life Membership in the Saskatchewan Nurses Association. In 1973 Kay and Harold moved to a farm a few miles west of Yorkton. Both enjoyed returning to the life of childhood. Kay was very involved especially with a large garden and a little nursing (now with ailing cattle). Her greatest joy was to welcome her young grandchildren, Jenny and Geoff. They retired from active faming in 1983 but after a short stint back in Yorkton they moved back out to the peace and quiet of farm life and spent the winters in Arizona. In 1997 they moved back into Yorkton for life in a condo. Harold passed away shortly thereafter leaving Kay to spend ten years in the condo made especially enjoyable by a wonderful group of friends. After spending 52 years in Yorkton she moved to Estevan in 2008 and took up residence at Hillview Manor, just a few minutes away from her daughter Jean and son-in-law Dennis. Kay was known as a practical and competent person who was able to get things done. For many years she was active at St. Andrew’s United Church and with the Rebekah’s in Yorkton. She had an excellent memory and enjoyed telling stories about her family and past. These qualities served her well in several tasks of love she took on in retirement - writing a history of the Yorkton Union Hospital, histories of the Wood and Christie families and her own life story. She enjoyed family gatherings like those at the cottage at York Lake or with friends to play bridge. In later years she was able to travel. Her favourite trips were to Ireland and Scotland where she was finally able to meet aunts and cousins she had known about all her life. She enjoyed reading, knitting, crossword puzzles, baking and a game of canasta. Above all she was devoted to her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Kay was predeceased by her husband, Harold; her parents, James and Ada (Nicholson) Christie; two brothers, George and Gerald Christie and a sister, Eva Jory. She is survived by her son, Ted (Nancy) of Winnipeg and daughter, Jean (Dennis) Bode of Estevan; by grandchildren, Jennifer Bode of Victoria and Geoff (Twyla) Bode of Saskatoon and by five great-grandchildren, Kendra (Sergio) González of San Antonio, TX, Eric Gusikoski of Victoria and Emerson, Eleanor and Estella Bode of Saskatoon; by sisters-in-law, Dorothy Wood of Foam Lake and Lucille Kotzer of Yorkton and by numerous nieces and nephews. Kay’s family is grateful to Eunice Massett and the staff at Hillview Manor, Dr. Charles Omosigho and the staff of St. Joseph’s Hospital for the care they provided in her last years. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Christie’s Funeral Home in Yorkton, SK. In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to the Yorkton Regional Health Centre (The Health Foundation of East Central Saskatchewan Inc., 41 Betts Ave., Yorkton, SK, S3N 1M1) in Kay’s memory. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

KOZEY - It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of our beloved Mom, Grandma/Baba Olga Kozey on November 12, 2015 at the Pasqua Hospital in Regina at the age of 87. Olga arrived on this Earth August 2, 1928 in Goodeve, SK. A beautiful daughter to Wasyl and Kateryna (Bekesh) Pankiw. Olga grew up in the Goodeve area on the farm. She attended Halech School for approximately 8 years when a decision came about to quit school to help her family out on the farm as 2 of her brothers set out to join the military. Here now, Olga helped without complaint on the farm, in the fields, with livestock, in the home cooking, cleaning and keeping (at her best) all her siblings in order. Olga perfected the art of cooking and baking. Her passion was making dozens upon dozens of perogies and cabbage rolls. Upon her perfecting the skills of homemaking, Olga was ready for marriage. Meeting the love of her life Peter Kozey, they married in Goodeve in 1950. They settled on the Kozey family homestead just North of highway 15 between Goodeve and Hubbard, with Hubbard being home. Farm life and working hard was what Olga knew. Never complaining and always working tending to the cattle, feeding and milking, cleaning stalls, raising chickens, pigs. All the while raising 4 children, helping out with her live-in in-laws, keeping everyone fed, keeping the house clean, cutting grass, looking after her enormous garden, tending to the fields upon harvest. It was a tireless non ending cycle for Olga, with sleep being a foreign word for her. Olga was used to getting up on Mondays at 3 am to do laundry. This was the norm for her. Olga and Peter regularly attended Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Holy Ghost in Goodeve. Olga enjoyed socializing with family and friends. She enjoyed dancing, visiting, playing 3 spot, cribbage, picking mushrooms and chokecherries and always being the one to have enough food made for everyone - always! This all the while keeping up with her daily duties of being a wife, mom, grandma and homemaker. Olga always had that one stick of Juicy Fruit gum in her purse and always was willing to let another have it. She never complained and always provided for others first. After almost 50 years on the family farm, retirement was in hand and they sold the family farm and retired to the city of Yorkton. Keeping with her faith, she attended the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Yorkton. Upon Peter’s passing in September of 2002, Olga lived in their ‘dream home’ until July of 2006. Here is where she decided to move to her own condo in Regina where she lived out her final years close to her family and friends. Always having thoughts of visiting and having visitors, she became extremely close to Jake Dorish, son of Robert Dorish. It was as she described ‘her boy’ and never a day went by that she didn’t find time to see Jake or at least talk to him. A Prayer Service was held on Thursday, November 19, 2015 and the Funeral Service on Friday, November 20, 2015 at Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Yorkton with Very Rev. Father Mel Slashinsky officiating. The responses were led by Yvonne Panchuk & parish choir members. The cross bearer was Ron Pankiw. The Interment followed in the Garden of Gethsemane at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Rob Dorish, Jake Dorish, Andrew Kozey, Russel Pankiw, Mike Pankiw and Brandon Krushelnicki serving as the casket bearers. Memorials honouring Olga’s life may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.baileysfuneralhome.com. Vichnaya Pamyat! Memory Eternal!

God saw you getting tired The cure was not to be He closed His arms around you And whispered “Come With Me” You suffered much in silence Your spirit did not bend You faced your pain with courage Until the very end You tried so hard to stay with us Your fight was all in vain God took you into His loving home And freed you from your pain. Never does a day go by That I do not think of you Within my heart I will always keep A very special place for you And try to do the best in life As you would want me to. Vichnaya Pamyat Eternal Memory — Forever loved and deeply missed by your loving wife Adeline
Peter BOHAY – March 4, 1924 - November 26, 2010 In loving memory of Peter, husband, father and grandfather. Gone are the days we used to share But in our hearts you’re always there Never more than a thought away Loved and remembered every day Sadly missed, forever loved and remembered Nadine, Richard, Debbie, Mel, Erin, Steve, Elodie, Everett, Amy and Eric
1945 - 2014
PRYCHAK - In loving memory of my dear sister Sonia Caroline, who passed away November 19, 2005. We cannot lose the ones we love For even when they are gone We feel their gentle presence In the hush of every dawn We see them in the sunlight That makes the day so bright In the flowers of the springtime And in the stars at night We cannot lose the ones we love For they will always stay In all that’s bright and beautiful Around us day by day. —Lovingly remembered and sadly missed by your sister Adeline
A year has slipped by and life goes on, but from my heart you’re never gone. I think about you always, I talk about you too, I have so many memories, but I wish I still had you. You will forever be in my heart until we meet again. —Love Mike & family MikeSmud_1x65.L27_

UCT awards Three members of the United Commercial Travellers No. 578 Inc. Charity No. 204729 of Yorkton were honoured at an AWARDS NIGHT held September 9, 2015 at Melrose Place in Yorkton. This was part of the function hosted by the Regina UCT as an Appreciation Night for Yorkton UCT executive, their spouses and area members. Wayne Griffin, the Regional President representing UCT councils in Manitoba and Saskatchewan attended the function and presented 50 year AWARDS and PINS to Keith Washenfelder and Ken Brice. A third
member Morris Peterson was unable to attend. United Commercial Travellers serve our community by making donations to many ongoing projects. These include Yorkton Minor Sports, The Salvation Army, The Soup Haven, Yorkton Mental Health, Yorkton Senior Mobility, Yorkton Youth Scholarships, Yorkton Music Festival, Yorkton Abilities Council, The East Central Health Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society and Canadian Red Cross.
Consultant looks into recess play time Two suburban Minneapolis elementary schools this fall hired a consulting firm to advise officials on kids’ recess, and the leading recommendations (promoting “safety” and “inclusiveness”) were elimination of “contact” games in favor of, for example, hopscotch. Some parents objected; recess, they said, should be more freestyle, unstructured. (More consultants’ advice: De-emphasize refereed “rules” games in favor of monitors who simply praise effort.) One Minnesota principal noted improvement — fewer fights and nurse visits now — but as one parent said, her child feels that recess is no longer really “playing.”

Bright Ideas
Unapparent Problem, Solved: Vladimir Laurent (an insurance executive in Coral Springs, Florida) received his U.S. patent on Sept. 29 and can proceed massproducing “The Shield” — his brainstorm to keep men’s genitalia from dragging on the inside of toilet bowls while they’re seated. Laurent told the South Florida Business Journal that his device was something he “needed, personally” (though he’s aware that not all males experience the sensation). The Shield is basically a cup attached to the bowl by suction that allows movement via a ball-and-socket joint.
Latest Human Rights Kentucky’s
govern-
News of the Weir d ment ethics law bars gifts from lobbyists to legislators, but state Sen. John Schickel filed a federal lawsuit in September claiming that he has a constitutional (First Amendment) right to receive them. (The laws were passed after the FBI found several Kentucky politicians selling their votes.) And in May, officials of the American Gaming (gambling) Association and the Association of Club Executives complained to the Pentagon that a threatened prohibition
of the use of government credit cards at casinos and strip clubs violated card users’ constitutional rights, in that protected activities (such as business strategy meetings) take place at those venues.
Can’t Possibly Be True
Florida Justice: Orville “Lee” Wollard, now 60, was convicted of aggravated assault in 2008 after he fired one “warning shot” into a wall of his home during an argument with his daughter’s boy-
friend. Believing his shot defused a dangerous situation (the boyfriend had once angrily ripped sutures from Wollard’s stomach), Wollard had declined a plea offer of probation and gone to trial, where he lost and faced a law written with a 20-year minimum sentence. Florida has since amended the law to give judges discretion about the crime and the sentence, but Gov. Rick Scott and the state’s clemency board have refused to help Wollard, who must serve 13 more years for a crime he perhaps would not even be charged with today.
Inexplicable Christopher Hiscock, 33, got only a year’s proba-
tion after his guilty plea for trespassing on a ranch in Kamloops, British Columbia, in September — because it was a trespass with panache. Since no one had been home, Hiscock fed the cats, prepared a meal, shaved and showered, took meat out of the freezer to thaw, made some coffee, started a fire in the fireplace, did some laundry, put out hay for the horses, and even wrote some touchingly personal notes in the resident’s diary (“Today was my first full day at the ranch.” “I have to remind myself to just relax and take my time.”) In court, he apologized. “I made a lot of mistakes.” “Beautiful ranch. Gorgeous. I was driving (by) and I just turned in. Beautiful place.”
