DAVIS Dorothea Margaret Fookes was born on the family farm in the Rhein district on November 12, 1937, the third of nine children, born to Alex and Martha (nee Waschenfelder) Fookes. She was raised and went to school in the Rhein district. On Valentine’s Day in 1954, Dorothea had her first date with James “Jim” Davis and she knew he was the one! They were married in Yorkton in the old Anglican Church on July 20, 1956. They celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary this past summer and Dorothea still knew he was the one! True Love! On January 1957 they were blessed with their first child, Margaret followed by James, Jr. in 1958, Kathryn in 1960 and as if she wasn’t busy enough, Hugh in 1969. Dorothea and Jim lived many places before settling in Bredenbury in 1962. There Dorothea became very involved in community activities such as being part of the ACW, curling, working tirelessly in the skating rink and sewing many carnival costumes. She was a person of many talents! She loved to sew, garden, decorate and cook. Making quilts became a passion and she spent many an afternoon quilting with her friends while she lived in Bredenbury. Every member of her family sleeps safely under a quilt, “made with tender loving care by Dorothea”. She sewed many formal gowns making many brides and graduates look beautiful on their special day. Dorothea also loved to garden and she had a true “green thumb”. Her produce was eaten at the family table and her flowers were enjoyed by everyone around her. In 1980, along with Hugh, Gerda and the cats, they moved to Esterhazy. Once settled there she became an active member of the Anglican Church and an avid bowler. Dorothea was very proud to be an IMC Manager’s spouse and supported Jim in his job with intelligence and grace. They had a very full life together in Esterhazy. In 1993, Jim had the good fortune to be transferred to Port Maitland, ON, on the Niagara escarpment near Niagara falls, where he and Dorothea lived for the next three years. And their family felt very lucky to be able to visit them and tour one of the most beautiful places in Canada! Once retired they returned to Saskatchewan and moved to Canora Beach. All of their energy focussed on their home, which was beautiful, with a yard like a park! Being very kind and loving animals, Dorothea and Jim adopted many strays who needed help to survive. In 2004 they moved to Yorkton to be closer to family and friends. Again, the church was an integral part of their lives. They volunteered at the fair booth in the summer, worked at all of the church fundraising activities and Dorothea found a new love, singing in the choir! Dorothea suffered her first stroke this past October and even when her life got increasingly difficult she rarely complained and she always said she was “good”. She was always appreciative for every visit and for even the smallest of things her family did for her - giving them her beautiful smile and a heartfelt “thank you” when they left. Dorothea was predeceased by her parents, Alex and Martha Fookes, her brothers, Arnold and Stanley and her brother-in-law, Paul Kraus. She leaves her husband, James to mourn her passing and cherish her memory, as well as her daughter, Margaret (Al) Amos, son, James (Cel) Davis, Jr., daughter, Kathryn (Robert) Brunskill and son, Hugh (Carla) Davis; eleven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one greatgreat-grandchild. Dorothea is also survived by her brothers, Kenneth, David and Donald and sisters, Iona, Marilyn and Sandra as well as many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Dorothea will be remembered for her intelligence, quick wit, great smile and laugh. She will be missed by everyone who had the great fortune to know and love her. God bless you all. A Memorial Service was held on Saturday, February 18, 2017 from Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Yorkton, SK with Reverend Nancy Brunt officiating. The organist, Judy Berg, led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” and “How Great Thou Art”. Special taped music selections included, “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen and “Wind Beneath My Wings” by Bette Midler. The urn bearers were Dorothea’s sons, James Davis, Jr. and Hugh Davis. A private family cremation committal will take place at a later date. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

Death Notices

LAUTTAMUS - Mr. Alfred “RED” John Gust Lauttamus of Yorkton, SK passed away peacefully, with his wife of 52 years Janet by his side, on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at the age of 76 years. Red was born on Dec 11, 1940 in the New Finland District. Red’s father died when he was around the age of 2. He grew up with his mom Edith. He told many stories of growing up in a one room schoolhouse near Moosomin, SK and the many chores and harvests he did as a pre-teen, fishing with neighbours, riding his new bike, listening to the Lone Ranger or Roy Rogers. He attended high school in Moosomin and Wapella. In the summer he would ride his bike and in the winter his horse, to which he would tell his children later in life that it was “uphill both ways”. Around this time his mother married Edmund Schinbein. Red worked on the pipeline for a short period and had a few jobs in High River & Calgary, AB before returning home. Red had one sister, Sharon and one brother, Barry. In 1959 Red was involved in a trench cave-in of a sewer line, luckily he only had a few bruises and scratches. In the fall of 1961 Red joined the Militia which led to him joining the R.C.A.F. His 27 years of service in the military as an EGS Tech took him all over Canada and Cairo, Egypt, Tel Aviv, Israel and many tours to Alert, NWT. In 1963 Red met his wife-to-be, Janet and they were married on April 25, 1964 in Winnipeg, MB. They bought their first car while living in Toronto. Their first child Jennifer was born in Cold Lake, AB in 1968. Red’s first tour of duty was to Alert, NWT (500 miles from the North Pole) in 1969. This is where he started his love of film/photography. In 1970 Red’s family moved to Mont Apica (Quebec City). Their second child Darin was born in 1971. A transfer to Yorkton, SK, Sara Lynn’s birth in 1973 and a peacekeeping tour to Egypt kept him busy. Red’s career had the family moving every couple of years which also included Kingston, ON and Gypsumville, MB and he retired from the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1989 while stationed in Moose Jaw, SK. They then moved back to Yorkton, SK. He had many jobs which included the Yorkton Airport, Saskatoon Airport, Lilydale Chicken plant in Wynyard and in Hudson Bay. He also did grass cutting, snow removal, helped farmers and many other odd jobs. Red retired for the last time in 2005. Red was proud of his veteran license plate and loved his personalized plate that said “RED JAN”. Red had a real passion for taking scenic drives and taking photos of nature and animals. He spent a lot of time researching his family tree and Finnish history. He was well known for his love of the New Finland District. He enjoyed going for coffee with friends and was known to be a great man with many stories to tell. Red had a love of fishing, hunting and later in life he mastered the computer and if he wasn’t researching his family history he was documenting churches and cemeteries in Saskatchewan or sending another funny email. He is survived by his wife Janet; daughter Jennifer and her children Brooke, Ty, Jacqueline, Evan and Aron; son Darin and his children Emily (Fiancé Robert) and their son Bryce, Kayla and Megan; daughter Sara Lynn (Jeremy) and their daughter Amy and his sister Sharon (David) Baker and their family. Red was predeceased by his father Toivo and mother Edith (Ed); brother Barry. It is with great sorrow we have to say goodbye to a beloved husband, father, grandfather, greatgrandfather, brother and uncle. Cremation has taken place. Friends are invited to join the family on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre, beginning at 2:00 pm. Interment will take place in the New Finland Cemetery. In memory of Red, memorials to one’s charity of choice would be appreciated by the family.

PLAN OF THE WEEK

PLAN NUMBER 7-31000 TWO-STOREY FAMILY HOME Two-storey homes, square metre for square metre, provide the most living space on a property, and this three-bedroom family home is no exception. Entry is through a covered porch with a veranda to the left. Once in the foyer, double doors open to a den, with the U-shaped staircase to the second floor beyond. A window above the stairwell will let in lots of natural light. The great room, separated from the foyer by an archway, has a lofty

sloped ceiling that is open to the floor above. A gas fireplace is flanked by entertainment units, and large windows look onto a covered patio at the back of the home. From the dining area, access to the covered deck is easy, through sliding glass doors. A prep island divides the kitchen from the dining area, which has large windows overlooking the back garden. Natural light will enter the kitchen through windows over the double sink, which is set into a corner at an angle. The U-shaped counter configuration will provide adequate

working space as well as efficiency. A walk-in pantry will offer extra storage space. Across from the powder room located near the foyer is a handy coat closet. Another closet is included in the laundry room, which has access to the double garage, large enough to include a workshop. Upstairs, the master suite looks out to the back garden. The generous en-suite includes a soaker tub as well as double basins and a shower stall. The walkin closet will be roomy enough for a couple’s clothing and accessories.

The second and third bedrooms share a threepiece bath. A linen closet is located outside the entrance to the third bedroom. Part of the second floor is open to the great room below, and is railed for safety. On the outside, the home is clad in horizontal siding, with wooden shingles and decorative woodwork in the gables. Pilasters with brick bases mark the entry and veranda, and brick accents flank the two garage doors. This home measures 42 feet wide by 58 feet deep, for a total of 2,079 square feet of living space, not counting the unfinished basement included with the plans. Ceilings rise to nine feet throughout the main floor, except where otherwise indicated. Plans for design 7-31000 are available for $855 (set of 5), $920(set of 8) and $972 for a super set of 10. Also add $35.00 for Priority charges within B.C. or $60.00 outside of B.C. Please add H.S.T., PST, OR G.S.T (where applicable) to both the plan price and Priority charges. Important topic lost My goodness, it seems like every week the hyperbole gets more extreme. At issue this time is a motion (M-103) in the House of Commons that seeks to “quell the rising public climate of hate and fear; condemn Islamophobia and all forms of systemic racism religious discrimination,” and to study the issues and propose solutions. Pamela Geller, an American antiIslam activist tweeted “Canadian PM, Justin Trudeau, Smears all Canadians with Islamophobia Lie to Create Sharia State.” Another tweeter from Toronto, going only by the handle Sharon wrote: “M-103 is nothing more than a ban on free speech. First we can’t say what we think, so what’s next, a ban on thinking?” Everybody who reads this column knows how much I hate slippery slope arguments, but this kind of thinking is really confounding. First of all, can we start with a simple definition? A motion in Parliament is a proposal for the House to do something. In this case that something is to condemn a bad thing and to look for ways to fix it. Even if it the motion is passed, it will not even be close to being a law. And even if it became a law, it would never be a ban on free speech. Seriously, isn’t the fact that “Sharon” can express an opinion publicly that has no foundation in reality whatsoever, evidence in itself that people in this country are still free to say and think whatever they want no matter how delusional? It is not unreasonable to question whether freedom of speech is eroding, now more so than ever it seems with the current fiasco trying to pass

itself off as a democratic administration in Washington, D.C. But that’s actually the opposite fear from what my abovereferenced tweeters are experiencing, isn’t it? Fear is red herring, though. No one is trying to stop anybody from saying what they think or thinking what they think. And no one is trying to, or even thinking about instituting Sharia Law in Canada. That is beyond ridiculous. It would be nice if the fringers would get a grip on reality, however. These conspiracy theories and slippery slope arguments are confounding and they defeat their own purpose in their extremism because we do need to have a frank discussion about religion in this country that gets lost in the shrill. Freedom of religion (and equally importantly freedom from religion, as most people seem to forget) is a foundational principle of Canada. But our values are secular values, paramount among them being that everyone is equal under the law and the supreme law is the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Since so many people don’t seem to get this, let’s start with Section 1, which reads: “The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the rights and freedoms set out in it subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society.” Reasonable limits as prescribed by law as can be demonstrably General Employment General Employment justified in a free and democratic society.
