SCREPNEK Pearl Irene Screpnek, beloved widow of Ernie Screpnek of the Yorkton district, passed away in the St. Paul Lutheran Home in Melville, SK on Monday, December 12, 2016 at the age of 80. Pearl was born on September 2, 1936 at a farm near Midale. She was the third and youngest of three sisters born to Martin and Signe (nee Nystrom) Lindbom. Martin passed in 1939 and the family moved to the house on the hill in Midale which today is the pioneer home for the Souris Valley Antique Association. Pearl graduated from grade 12 in Midale and then attended nurses’ training at the Regina General Hospital. She completed her nursing degree at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, AB in 1959. After completing her education, Pearl began working for the Victorian Order of Nurses in Thunder Bay, ON. She then took an extensive trip to Europe and Scandinavia visiting many relatives in Sweden. She returned to Saskatchewan and worked for Public Health making many road trips to small communities to conduct baby clinics and give vaccinations. While working in Melville she met her husband-to-be, Ernie. They were married in Midale on October 10, 1964. They travelled to Niagara Falls and the Maritimes over the next several years. Pearl and Ernie began hobby farming in 1965 while they both continued to work their day jobs. They had two sons, Paul in 1967 and Kirk in 1969. Pearl took some time away from her nursing career to raise the family, but would take night nursing shifts while Ernie was home to watch the boys. Pearl returned to work on a part-time basis with Yorkton home care in the late 1970’s. As her family grew she began working full-time, retiring in 2001. She returned to Scandinavia with her sister, Blanche, in 2005 visiting relatives and a nephew that lives in Finland. In 2015 with failing health due to Alzheimers, Pearl entered St. Paul Lutheran Home in Melville. She was a resident on the Bethany Way wing of the nursing home for her last 21 months. Pearl was a devout Christian and attended church regularly. She spent many years teaching junior church and was an executive member of the Yorkton Christian Women’s Club. She always seemed to be taking food to the church for various events. She hosted and attended many prayer coffee and calebs (senior church group) meetings. Pearl loved her sweets and insisted you eat when visiting. The coffee, pie and dainties were always out. Pearl was always known to have a baby in her arms; she loved them dearly. When her grandchildren arrived she loved them, and spent many days enjoying their company as much as they loved being with her. She enjoyed music and attending concerts as well as tending her garden and flowers. Pearl had a soft spot for animals with numerous pet cats and dogs over the years and watching over the many wild animals surrounding the farm yard. Pearl was predeceased by her father, Martin in 1939; her mother, Signe in 1997; her husband, Ernie in 2009 and sister, Evelyn in 2012. She is survived by two sons, Kirk of Yorkton, SK and Paul (Sheri) of Melville, SK; three grandchildren, Colton, Geena and Karlee; one sister, Blanche James of Kamloops, BC as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral Services were held on Saturday, December 17, 2016 from Heritage Baptist Church in Yorkton, SK with Pastor Brian Kirsch officiating. Pearl’s son, Paul Screpnek, shared words of tribute and eulogy in his Mother’s memory. The pianist, Tamantha Kirsch, led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, “How Great Thou Art”, “Silent Night” and soloist, Betty Fritzke sang, “Amazing Grace”. The Interment followed in the Yorkton Memorial Gardens, Garden of St. Luke with Mitchell Wlock, Fred Phillips, Martin Phillips, Brent Jones, Lloyd Liebrecht and Colton Screpnek serving as casket bearers. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan. DYCER - Betty was born on July 7, 1929 at home in Grayson, SK; a daughter to Anton and Theresa (nee Fuchs) Zimmer. The family moved to Dubuc, SK where she attended school. Betty would walk two miles to school each day, along the railroad tracks. She completed her Grade 8 at the Luton Country School. Betty worked for Tony Exner on a farm in the Dubuc area and then moved to Melville to work at the beanery in the CN Railway Station. There she met her one and only love, Jack Dycer. They were married on April 25, 1950. Jack and Betty farmed one and half miles north of Bangor. Betty was a genuine, caring mother and farmer’s wife. She took an active part in farming, milking cows and hauling grain. Betty was very ambitious and planted a big garden, often enough for the neighbours. She volunteered at community activities in her spare time. In 1992, Jack and Betty moved into their new home in Yorkton. Jack passed away on December 1, 1993. Betty continued to live in their home and took great pride in her yard and flowers until 2005 when she bought a condo. There she still had flowers, but planted them in pots every spring. The aroma of homemade bread in the condo will never be forgotten. In the fall of 2014 her suite at The Bentley became her home where she made many friends and her passion for jigsaw puzzles continued. Her move to the Yorkton Crossing Retirement Community was a short two weeks. Betty was an active and devout parishioner of the Holy Trinity Anglican Church and was a member of the altar guild until she sold her car. She took comfort in her faith. Betty loved dancing, playing cards and knitting. The warmth and labour of love is felt by family as they treasure her beautiful afghans. She had an interest in curling and baseball. She didn’t miss watching a Blue Jays game. Always proud of everyone in her family, Betty enjoyed a visit, however long; even a quick phone call. She remembered everyone’s birthday and would send them a special birthday card. Betty gained her angel wings on December 5, 2016 with family at her side. She will forever watch over her family and friends. Betty was predeceased by her husband, Jack; her parents, Anton and Theresa; her sisters, Gertrude (Jim) Hustak, Mary (Joe) Bozsik, Martha (Steve) Herperger and Katherine Richards; her brother, John Zimmer; daughter-in-law, Sylvia Dycer; sister-in-law, Mary (John) Victor as well as numerous other relatives. Betty will forever be remembered by her family: her daughter, Lorraine (Bev) Ottenbreit, their children, Stacie (Chris) Patton and daughters, Katherine and Grace, Tyler (Carissa) and daughters, Dylann and Kennedy, Trevor (Trisha) and children, Violet and Nathan, Kim (Jo) and children, Ethan and Vanessa, Graham (Jen) and children, Liam and Vienna; her daughter, Donna (Robert) Campbell, their sons, Derek (Donna) and children, Nicholas, Jordan and Kayley, Mark (Lisa) and daughters, Jada, Aliyah and Nadia, Dean (Lisa) and sons, Ethan and Aiden and Brent (Crystal); her son, Lorne, his daughters, Tracy (Chad) Turberfield, Sara and Kaitlin; her son, Harold (Ella) and their daughters, Leanne (Kevin) Huber and children, Zachary, Ty and Olivia, Julie (Chris) Wermie and children, Reid and Sloan and Aimee (Sylvain); her son, Corwin and his children, Austin, Kaedin and Tristyn. She will also be sadly missed by her sister, Irene (Jerry) Osmak, her brother, Bill (Eloise) Zimmer and brotherin-law, Robert Richards. Betty will be fondly remembered by nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. The family wishes to thank everyone for their prayers, thoughtfulness and support during this sad time. A Memorial Service was held on Monday, December 19, 2016 from Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Yorkton, SK with the Reverend Deacon Luanne Hrywkiw officiating. The readers were Sara Dycer and Kaitlin Dycer. The organist, Judy Berg, led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, “All Things Bright and Beautiful”, “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands” and “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”. A special taped music selection was “Angels Among Us” by Alabama. The urn bearers were grandchildren, Austin Dycer, Kaedin Dycer and Tristyn Dycer. Card of Thanks As the festive season of Christmas approaches, I would like to acknowledge and express our sincere gratitude to our family, friends and neighbours. These people quickly gathered and provided an abundance of food, a grain cart, and several trucks, combines and most importantly many hours of labour. This sudden assistance allowed us to gather our 2016 crop in a very challenging harvest year. The contributions were especially helpful after the fatal collision involving a combine, a truck and my vehicle where I sustained injuries on November 18. In addition, I would like to express our deepest condolences to the McDermott family on the loss of Mr. Gerald McDermott as a result of this collision. To all the people who have attended our farm and assisted, this message is to announce our sincere thanks and appreciation for the tremendous effort and time dedicated over the last few weeks. No words can say enough about these contributions and it will always be remembered. It speaks loudly to the quality of people you are. Once again, on behalf of myself and my brother Roy, we thank each and every one of you for the assistance and compassion in this time of need. Thanks to all; Happy Christmas and the best to you in 2017. -Albert Derworiz on behalf of Albert and Roy Derworiz and families of Derworiz Farms, Wroxton, SK.

4-PLEX BUILDING
For Inquiries, please call PLAN NUMBER 5-3681 ONE-LEVEL LIVING One-level living is the idea with this compact bungalow, which easily compensates for its lack of a basement with a clever main-floor plan that makes use of every inch of space. The covered entry leads into a foyer with a den (or third bedroom) to the left and a coat closet to the right. Beyond the foyer and past a display case/wine rack are the kitchen and dining area, with the great room overlooking the back garden. French doors in the great room open onto a terrace, and natural light will flood through windows in the dining area and over the kitchen sink. The kitchen includes a handy prep island with a three-seat eating bar, as well as a pantry and generous counter space. The master suite also overlooks the back garden, and includes an ensuite bathroom with an oval soaker tub, as well
as a walk-in closet. The second bedroom, tucked in betwixt the master suite, the laundry room and the double garage, will share a three-piece bath with the third bedroom or den, which features closet space as well as a builtin desk that would make it ideal for a home office. The laundry room features a bench and a wall of coat hooks, as well as access to the double garage. The linen closet is located nearby. Should a basement be desired, included are plans for an optional stairway. Exterior finishes include horizontal siding with decorative accents in the three gables, as well as partly mullioned windows and an ornamental garage door. Brick accents and a wooden pilaster near the front door lend this home the charm of a cottage. This home measures 35 feet wide and 52 feet deep, for a total of 1,298 square feet. This is the Christmas issue of Yorkton This Week, so it’s only natural to try to find something that fits as a Christmas film. Snow Cat, directed by Sheldon Cohen, is about Christmas in the same way that Frosty the Snowman is, a story of a temporary winter friend rather than a tale about the holiday – it fits the season most of all. Based on a short story by Dayal Kaur Khalsa, it’s something to watch as the cold north wind blows outside on a holiday evening. Within a frame narrative about a grandmother and her pillow fortdwelling granddaughter wiling away the hours on a cold winter’s day, we hear the story of Elsie, a woman living alone in the far north, who yearns for some companionship which is also cheap to feed. The north wind, a tempestuous character, decides to send her a snow cat, a creature made out of snow and thus prone to melting. They go on adventures, but the moment she is warned to never bring him inside you can tell where the story is going. It takes a turn after that twist, because it has to – this is a very traditional story, happiness with strings attached, but because of this the story has to have more to it than the expected outline. It becomes a story about letting go, Elsie’s companions – a baby goose joins later – tend to leave. Maybe we can infer something about the grandmother in the tale from this, maybe she’s preparing the young girl for the inevitable. While the stated moral of the story – some pets are best left outside – is certainly something parents with rambunctious white dogs might embrace, the story has a little more depth than that. It also happens to be a winter film that doesn’t look like a traditional winter film. Cohen knows how to make a film that looks like winter, he directed the animated version of The Sweater, that bit of Canadiana about the tragedy of getting a Toronto Maple Leafs hockey sweater. Here, instead of embracing whites and light blues, he goes dark. Built off of a finger painting
animation developed by Jeãmi, the film is largely glowing lines over black backgrounds. It’s a way to look like winter while going in an unexpected direction. It’s dark, yet vibrant in colour, like a house decked out in Christmas lights on the shortest day of the year. I haven’t always been a fan of Cohen’s work, his characters have a tendency towards weird proportions and movement, but it works with the animation style. Snow Cat can look minimalist and abstract, but that just adds to the fairy tale qualities of the film. That is why I chose to highlight it this week. It’s not about Christmas itself, neither Jesus nor Santa make an appearance. Instead, it looks like Christmas, bright lights in the blackness of a too-long night. It feels like Christmas, the meeting of friends and family you might not see every day, and the importance of both treasuring your time together and accepting your time apart. And it reminds me of my brother’s own white pet, who needs to be kept outside not because he’ll melt, but because he will break everything inside. -Devin Wilger
