STACHERUK - The Stacheruk family is saddened to announce the passing of their mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Lena Stacheruk, who passed away at Foam Lake Jubilee Home on November 1, 2017 at the age of 90. Lena was born on April 12, 1927 in Foam Lake where she grew up on the family farm. On October 7, 1948 Lena married Nick Stacheruk and settled on the Stacheruk farm for the next 26 years. It was here that they would begin their family, with two sons, Danny and Rick. In November 1974 Nick and Lena moved to Foam Lake where she began working at Foam Lake Jubilee Home until her retirement in 1992. After her and Nick’s retirement, they spent their time travelling and visiting with family and friends. In 2002 Lena was predecease by her loving husband Nick after 53 years of marriage. She would remain in Foam Lake until 2008 when she moved to Yorkton to be closer to her family. Lena made one more move, returning to Foam Lake to take up residence at Foam Lake Jubilee Home until her passing. Lena was a long standing member of the Royal Canadian Legion and Auxiliary Sheho Branch #365. Lena took pride in everything she did, she enjoyed gardening and crocheting; which she was very talented at and her tablecloths were coveted by her family. She enjoyed helping others and was involved with the Community Hall Perogy Ladies. Lena loved the holidays and family get-togethers; any chance to spend time with her family and friends was important to her. Their house in Foam Lake would eventually need to be renovated to allow for the extra room to host these ever growing family suppers. She would spend hours cooking and preparing for her company, her perogies will be forever missed. In her later years, Lena would spend many afternoons with her many friends over coffee and a good game of cards, which she truly adored. Lena leaves to cherish her memory, her sons, Dan Stacheruk of Yorkton; Rick (Ronaele) Stacheruk of Yorkton; grandchildren Derek (Erin) Stacheruk of Yorkton, Lana (Pat) Dodds of Saskatoon, Juliesa Stacheruk of Regina and Jaylen Stacheruk of Saskatoon; great-grandchildren Madison, Jordyn and Dray Stacheruk of Yorkton. Lena also leaves to recall her memory, her sisters, Alice Nodge (Albert), Doris Schebel (Joe), brother John Ostapowich (Olga), sister-inlaws, Esther Ostapovich, Emily Ostapowich, Adele (Ernie) Reimer, Kristine Kerr, Rose Harrison and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Lena was predeceased by her beloved husband, Nick Stacheruk, her parents Gaficia and Alex Ostapowich, sisters Mary Wyhony (Bill), Annie Berezowski (Nick), Katie Anaka (Mike), brothers Steve Ostapowich, Wasyl Ostapowich, Metro Ostapowich, Nick Ostapovich and daughter-in-law Liz Stacheruk. She lived a full life, complete with laughter and sorrow. As we gather today, although we will miss her physical presence in our lives, let’s not just grieve, but also celebrate her life as it was fully lived. As we talk and visit, let us share our memories, as her Spirit continues to live in all of us. The Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Rev. Fr. Rodion Luciuk of St. Mark’s Orthodox Church officiating. The responses were led by Bob Rohr. Lana Dodds and Juliesa Stacheruk shared reflections of their Baba’s life. The interment followed in the Foam Lake Town Cemetery with Derek Stacheruk, Jaylen Stacheruk, Pat Dodds, Mervin Ostapovich, Donald Ostapowich, Dennis Premak serving as the casket bearers. Memorials in memory of Lena may be made to Foam Lake Jubilee Home as gifts of remembrance. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.baileysfuneralhome.com.
RICHARDS - James (Jim) Ward Richards, jokester, honest guy, conversationalist and man of many funny faces was born in January, 1926 near Bangor, SK. He died October 11, 2017 in Saskatoon, SK. The birth and death of this man are not nearly as relevant as all the days and nights he lived life to the fullest in between. As a child of the depression, growing up on a farm with 11 brothers and sisters, James learned to live within his means, how to laugh, dance, be active and also how to enjoy simple pleasures. If you were lucky enough to be in his inner circle you would know that imitating his friends and neighbours was a favourite pastime and a sincere compliment to the character being imitated. He should have been a Rich Little. This tradition began with his mother, Margaret, probably to the chagrin of his father, Michael Richards. He dearly loved his brothers and sisters, Winnie, Margaret, Ida, Bill, Gwladys, John, Nest, Megan, Bob, Enid and David. He was kind and helpful to them and a good son and brother too. As an adult he left the farm and went to work in Yorkton, SK where he met the woman who would endure 63 years of teasing, Leona. She couldn’t resist his blue eyes and big smile so she married him in 1954. James and Leona bought a farm and proceeded to have four children, Garth, Raymond, Russell and Sherry. Jim took his responsibility as family man very seriously. He worked hard and built his family a new home, made time for activities for the kids, even building them a skating rink most winters. He loved his kids. Yes meant yes and no meant no, Jim’s children could always count on their Dad. Jim believed in helping his neighbours and his community. He was the first to show up in times of trouble to lend a hand and spent countless hours and many years serving as an RM councillor and Reeve for the municipality of Saltcoats. He belonged to the Wheat Pool, took a course in public speaking and received a Farm Family award for Soil Conservation. He was a little ahead of his time in that department. He planted shelter belts in the yard and the fields to preserve the soil and the wildlife. He loved nature and felt great satisfaction that the birds he dearly loved and animals would have more habitat because of him. James loved farming but he also loved people so when he retired it didn’t take him long to convince Leona to move to Saskatoon where there was more people and more action. Life after retirement was full, busy and fun for James and Leona. They had a travelling van and made full use of it. Jim loved walking, bowling, singing, music, church, horseshoes, watching boxing, going for a drive to see things, anything made with raisins, watching birds, having coffee with friends, soft vanilla ice cream, snowshoeing, dancing, playing marbles, smiling, his cap, a particular plaid shirt and a ratty old sweater vest that he liked to wear daily. In 1993 James realized a childhood dream and travelled to Patagonia, Argentina to meet his Welsh first cousins. The Welsh language that he spoke and his Welsh family roots were important to him and years later when he met more family straight from Wales he was thrilled to be able to use his childhood language once more. If you asked Jim if he had any regrets about his life he would say “Yes, there’s two, I felt that I missed my calling, I would have liked to become a minister because I like to help people, and…I wish that I could have spent more time with my kids.” Jim made up for that lost time by being an incredible fun loving grandfather to 7 adoring grandchildren, Tallia, Lindee, Garrett, Logan, Laura, Stacey and Katie. Even when dementia had taken a firm hold of Jim all one had to do was produce one of his 3 great-grandchildren and you were guaranteed a smile from ear to ear. We don’t think he missed his calling, his kindness and loving nature was evident his whole life. There were always extras at the table at James and Leona’s. Whether it was neighbour kids, nieces or nephews, visitors, or people he just met, friends old and new, Jim had a smile and extended his hand. He had a way of making you feel special and he left a lasting impression on more people than he will ever know. James was a fine man, one that his wife Leona and family are very proud of and he was dearly loved. He shall be dearly missed. Jim’s funeral was held on October 19 at the Saskatoon Funeral Home. If you would like to honour Jim’s memory, donations can be made to the Alzheimers Society. Condolences to the family can be made at www.saskatoonfuneralhome.com.

PLAN OF THE WEEK
PLAN NUMBER 5-3686 CHARMING TWO BEDROOM HOME This charming home offers the prospective homeowner plenty of choice, thanks to an unfinished bonus room over the double garage, as well as an alternative plan for the en-suite in the master bedroom. Entry is through a covered porch set off by brick pilasters. The foyer includes a coat closet to the left. Directly ahead is the staircase to the second-storey bonus room and beyond is the great room. The great room fea-
tures a sloped ceiling, as well as a gas fireplace that will cast its warmth into the dining area and kitchen. French doors open to a partially covered patio and the back garden beyond. A large window in the dining area looks out to the patio, and natural light will filter through the two narrow windows that look to the side garden. The kitchen, separated from the dining area and great room by an eating bar, is illuminated by a skylight and includes generous counter space. An eating bar with a double sink on one side sep-
arates the kitchen from the dining area, which features a large window overlooking the patio. The laundry room has access to the double garage. A mud room with a coat closet is located nearby. The master suite also has a sloped ceiling, as well as a doorway to the patio. Windows overlook the back garden. Both plans for the en-suite include double basins, a shower stall and a soaker tub with its own window. The walk-in closet is located either in a corner of the suite, or with access from the en-suite. The second and third
bedrooms share a threepiece bathroom, with a linen closet situated at its entrance. The third bedroom has a window with an extra-deep sill, which could double as a window seat. The unfinished bonus room includes a roughedin three-piece bathroom, allowing it to serve as a guest room or fourth bedroom. Exterior finishes include horizontal siding with shingle accents around the front windows. Brick pilasters flank the arched front porch, which also features shingle accents. This home measures 42 feet wide by 63 feet deep, for a total of 1,798 square feet, plus the bonus room of 497 square feet. Ceilings are nine feet high throughout. Plans for design 5-3686 are available for $775 (set of 5), $835 (set of 8) and $883 for a super set of 10. B.C. residents add 7% Prov. Sales Tax. Also add $35.00 for Priority courier charges within B.C. or $65.00 outside of B.C. Please add 5% G.S.T. or 13% H.S.T. (where applicable) to both the plan price and postage charges. Our NEW 49TH Edition of the Home Plan Catalogue containing over 400 plans is available for $15.50 (includes taxes, postage and handling).
