YOUNG - Chad Young beloved son of Dallas and Paula young of the Bredenbury district passed away in the early morning of February 10, 2017 at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon. Chad was born in the same hospital on May 20, 1999. At the time, his parents were living in Kenaston. When Chad was 3 years old, the family moved to the farm by Bredenbury. From the first day, Chad loved everything about farm life. This was evident as he spent more time with livestock and equipment as he grew up. His dream was to finish school and farm with his family. Chad was diagnosed with cancer when he was 16 and spent the next year fighting this battle. Through all the lifealtering events that were a result, his humour and attitude never failed. His choice, at a young age to serve God helped him through this experience. Chad will be forever missed by his parents, Dallas and Paula, and his younger brother, Ben. He will also be lovingly remembered by his grandparents, Marshall (Bud) and Fay Young, David and Cheryl Liston; Auntie Charlene (Stacy Upham), Uncle Daren (Karen) Young, Uncle Dave Young, Uncle Peter (Janis) Liston, Auntie Julie (David) Sorensen; many cousins and special friends. A family visitation was held on Friday, February 17, 2017 from the Chapel of Bailey’s Funeral Home. Funeral Services were held on Saturday, February 18, 2017 from the Flexi Hall in the Gallagher Centre in Yorkton with Scott McChesney, Mary Roper, Thelma Galbraith, Heidi McChesney and Jim Atcheson as the officiants. The pianist, Annette Beach led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, ‘Sweet, Sweet Release’, ‘Precious Thought’ and ‘Hand Held Out’. Chad’s friends sang a special selection ‘Nearer, Still Nearer’. Interment followed in the Sunnyside Cemetery near the family farm in the Bredenbury district with Tyrel Geck, Trae Cobb, Taylor Stewart, Brendan Young, Lane Sorensen and Tom Sorensen serving as casket bearers. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.baileysfuneralhome.com. Memorial donations may be made to: Ronald McDonald House 1011 University Drive Saskatoon, SK S7N 0K4 as gifts of remembrance. FINK - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lester Sebastian Fink, 72, of Yorkton, SK, who lost his battle with brain cancer and entered eternal rest on February 18, 2017. Les was born in Regina, SK on October 23, 1944. He was raised in Vibank, SK with his siblings and went to school in Regina where he graduated from Central Collegiate High School in Regina in 1963. Les was married to the love of his life and best friend, Nettie Fink (Melnychuk) on August 5, 1967. They were married 49 years. Les was a man of patience, a quiet gentleman who dedicated his life to his family. He lived by the rules, and respected everyone with pride and dignity. Les worked as a bookkeeper at Swift Canadian Company and GX94 Radio in Yorkton before opening his own accounting business, LSF Accounting. He loved to read, especially books on history and do his Sudoku puzzles in his recliner. He was disappointed that the last chapter of his favorite book series “Outlander” was not finished prior to his passing. He loved playing cards and games at the kitchen table with friends and family. Everyone who knew Les, knows he had keen wit, always a detailed story to tell, and a wonderful sense of humour. He enjoyed watching Jeopardy on TV and was, as we called him, a walking encyclopedia with a wealth of knowledge on any topic all tucked away in his memory bank. Les had a passion for golfing and was a member at the Deer Park golf course in Yorkton. He enjoyed watching sports, where he faithfully cheered on his Maple Leafs and Roughriders, wishing he would be able to visit the new Mosaic Stadium this year. He was a proud husband and father and took a genuine interest in both of his sons’ hockey and would regularly travel to see them play. His girls, Mikayla and Paige, were so special to him. He was proud to be “Geegee” and was so proud of their accomplishments: Mikayla with continuing her education and raising her son and Paige with her commitment to high school and playing hockey. He enjoyed travelling, especially down south after retiring to winter in Palm Springs where he always enjoyed time to golf, a good book with a scotch in hand and a beautiful sunset. Les is survived by his loving and beloved wife Nettie Fink and by his two sons, Clint (Sharlene) of Saskatoon, Devin (Sandi) of Calgary, two precious granddaughters Mikayla (Kwinlon), Paige and great grandson Holdyn of Saskatoon. He is also survived by his sister Brande (Bill) Brown of Medford, Oregon; brothers Marty (Marlene) of Regina, SK and Alvin (Elaine) Fink of Nanaimo, BC, many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. Les is preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and Frank Fink and step father Oswald Ullrich. A Memorial Service was held on Thursday, February 23, 2017 from the Chapel of Christie’s Funeral Home in Yorkton with Kathy Novak serving as the Funeral Celebrant. Kathy shared words of tribute and eulogy that were prepared by Les’ son, Devin Fink. Special taped music selections included, “Go Rest High on That Mountain” by Vince Gill as the processional, “Amazing Grace” by Alan Jackson and “You’ll Never Walk Alone” by Elvis Presley as the recessional. The Cremation Committal followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Les’ granddaughters, Paige and Mikayla Fink serving as the urn bearers. In lieu of flowers, friends so wishing, may make donations in Les’ name to the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency as tokens of remembrance. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

In Loving Memory of
Brian Pedde
Feb. 26,1962 - March 2, 2016
I once had something special that money couldn't buy. I had a special person but I had to say good bye. If I were asked one question, why I thought the world of you. I could give a million answers and they all would be true. The heartache and the sadness may not always show. People say it lessens, but little do they know. Meet us in our dreams and talk to us once more and ease this everlasting pain that makes our hearts so sore. The road without you is so long, a tear for every mile, but I know one day when my time ends you'll be waiting with a smile. With all my love, forever & ever, Sharon

My Hero You held my hand when I was small You caught me when I fell You are the hero of my childhood And my later years as well And every time I think of you My heart still fills with pride Though I will always miss you Dad I know you're by my side In laughter and in sorrow In sunshine and in rain I know you're watching over me Until we meet again. We thought of you with love today, But that is nothing new. We thought about you yesterday, And days before that too. We think of you in silence, We often speak your name. Now all we have is memories, And your picture in a frame. Your memory is our keepsake, With which we’ll never part. Although you are no longer here with us, We have you in our hearts. —Love Dean, Tracy and family

The laughs were flowing as freely as the beer at Joe Beeverz on February 24, as three comedians took to the stage to entertain a sold-out house. Adam Blank, right, Brent Ayton and headliner Mike Dambra, left, entertained the assem-
bled crowd with their comedic observations on life, love and, in some cases, cheap T-shirts and depth perception.
Much ado about chicken-soy The way CBC promoted the story and the way the Internet reacted, you would think Subway was using radioactive human remains in its chicken sandwiches. Charlsie Agro, the Marketplace journalist who made the rounds of other CBC shows to drum up interest in the program’s investigative piece about fast food chicken could barely contain her disgust. But what is really going on here? The program found, through DNA testing, there may only be approximately 50 per cent chicken in Subway’s chicken. Card of Thanks It is a blessing from God to have the assistance of many angels as one completes this journey and begins the next. It is with the passing of Alex Herchuk that the family wishes to thank the many angels along his journey: Dr. A. VanHeerden and Miranda for their compassionate and efficient care; Regina Allan Blair Clinic, Yorkton Chemotherapy and Homecare Treatment Center staff for their expert care and support; the Crestvue Ambulance staff for their quick response and efficiency; the immediate attention and efforts of the Yorkton Hospital Doctors, Emergency and ICU Registered Nurses, and all support staff involved in Al’s short hospital stay; and Father Frances Hengen’s quick attendance at the hospital. Special thanks to Jason Kopan of Kopans Funeral Home for his kindness, attention to detail, compassion, and ongoing support upon Al’s passing and in the weeks that have followed. We are grateful for the mass cards and many kindnesses shown by family, neighbours, and friends near and far. Crime Diary by Thom Barker It should come as no shock here that a fast food restaurant might be using what the industry calls “restructured meat” or that the company’s advertising would be less than 100 per cent transparent. There are plenty of reasons why you may not want to make fast food (or even restaurant food) your primary diet. Mostly that has to do with sodium and sugar. In any event, the fast food industry tends to offer chicken as a “healthier alternative.” What they don’t explicitly say is what it is a healthier alternative to, which is the other stuff on their menus (particularly hamburgers). It is obviously not a healthier alternative to cooking the stuff at home from fresh ingredients. What the CBC investigation turned up is that most of the other half of Subway chicken is soy. Soy, that miracle legume touted for decades as a healthier alternative to meat protein. Soy, the vegan substitute for, well, just about everything animal-derived. Soy, a staple General Employment

of the Chinese diet for thousands of years. Despite all of that, by the way, soy is now being vilified by crackpots for all the standard pseudoscientific bogeyman reasons: GMOs, hormones, blah blah blah blah. In any event, what is Subway’s crime here? One of the women who participated in CBC’s taste test said it was “misrepresentation.” I don’t think it is, though, at least not under current Canadian law or advertising standards. I looked at a whole bunch of Subway advertising and the worst I can say is it might be mildly deceptive. Nowhere have I ever seen them say their chicken is 100 per cent chicken. If they wanted to, though, they might be able to get away with that. Here’s what A&W says about its Chicken Buddy Burger: “The Chicken Buddy Burger features a 100 per cent white chicken breast patty with pickles and mayo all sandwiched between a soft warm bun.”
What this implies is the patty is 100 per cent chicken, but what it actually says is whatever percentage of chicken is in the patty is 100 per cent white chicken breast. The A&W Chicken Grill Deluxe scored an 89 per cent chicken in the CBC DNA test. I can’t imagine the Buddy Burger is higher than that, and I bet it is lower. Personally, it does not bother me that Subway’s Oven-Roasted Chicken is half soy. It tastes great and for as often as I eat fast food (very rarely) I don’t think even the sodium and sugar is going to kill me. I have no qualms about the product’s overall safety; I worry more about where the sandwich artists’ hands have been. That said, I do think we need to toughen up the consumer protection laws in this country. It’s all about informed consent and far worse than the fast food industry is the “natural” health product (NHP) industry. How, for example, do pharmaceutical companies still get away with selling homeopathic products, which have been proven to have no more efficacy than placebo. Why is Q-Ray able to continue peddling the pseudoscientific nonsense about its bracelets? Why are acupuncturists allowed to make claims of medical benefits when the actual evi-
Be aware of road bans Milder winter weather will impact truck haul weights on some Saskatchewan highways, beginning this week. The increased winter weights will be removed in southwest Saskatchewan beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, February 24. Truckers and shippers are advised to monitor their loads and watch for restrictions during what is a very sensitive period for some of our highways as the roadbed thaws and becomes weaker. The first spring weight restrictions will be published on www.highways. gov.sk.ca/restrictions ( w w w. s a s k a t c h e w a n .
ca/truckingweights). Regularly scheduled updates of the winter restriction orders will be provided every Tuesday and Friday until March 15 when winter weights are no longer in effect. Since early December, colder weather has allowed trucks to carry heavier loads. The freeze period during the cold winter months strengthens the road bed which supports heavier truck loads. Typically, these winter weights run from mid-November through mid-March; however, milder winter weather can reduce the winter weights period
