As an infant, she was adopted by Jack and Amanda Dyer from Bulyea, SK. She spent many happy years growing up in Bulyea with her adopted brother, Auldrich. In 1945, Marie moved to Regina, SK and met the love of her life, George Sletten. Marie and George loved to dance and spent many Fridays and Saturdays dancing the night away at the Trianon Ballroom. Marie and George were married on April 22, 1946 at the Anglican Church in Bulyea. For the first few years of their married life they lived in Bulyea while George was on the road as a salesman. Marie loved her home on Bailey Drive, spending lots of time in her garden and had many happy times with her wonderful neighbours. Marie was an active member of the Legion Ladies Auxiliary for many years, serving terms on the executive including a few as President. Marie was also a faithful bowler in the Ladies’ Afternoon League as well as the Evening Mixed League. One of Marie’s favourite things was the many cruises she and George took, they made many wonderful life long friends on the cruises. Due to failing health Marie moved to the Lakeside Manor Care Home in Saltcoats, SK in August of 2009. The staff at the Care Home took wonderful care of her for the last years of her life and she appreciated them all greatly. HASPER - It is with deep sorrow that the family of Bert Hasper announce his passing on Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre, Yorkton, SK. He was 72 years of age. Bert was born on January 15, 1945, the son of Harry and Isabella (nee Duff) Hasper. He grew up on the farm near Theodore and went to school in Theodore and Springside. He was united in marriage to Cherylle Bjornson on November 11, 1966 and the couple celebrated 50 years of marriage in 2016. Throughout the years, Bert worked at a variety of jobs to support his family. He worked on road construction in Swift Current, SK and ran the grader for the Department of Highways on the Mackenzie Highway when the family lived in High Level, AB. When they moved to Pine Point, North West Territories, he found employment at the mine, before moving back to Theodore, to run the service station for six years, farm and do custom work for farmers in the district. Bert always enjoyed working on the farm and while living in Yorkton for the last 20 years, his greatest pleasure was to go out to work for the Ford family, swathing, harrowing, repairing or just visiting. With such a wealth of knowledge in a variety of areas, Bert was able to help others with many of their repairs and he always shared that knowledge with anyone in need. He was a good friend and teacher to many. Bert loved tinkering and fixing things - even if Cherylle was going to throw something out, he wanted to at least take it apart to see how it worked. Often he was able to fix it, although many times it cost more to fix than to just buy a new item! Bert loved to dance, listen to music and often played along to the song on the spoons. As his health declined, Bert found a spot at the table where he could watch whatever others were doing - he was proud that his family had learned from how to fix things, make sausage and share that sausage with others, especially his friend, Daniel. Bert was an avid hunter and was very thankful to go hunting with his grandson and son-in-law this past fall. Bert will be remembered by so many as “Papa B” - he touched so many lives and considered so many to be his sons, his boys or his girls. He will always be remembered for the love he shared with his family, his positive, outgoing nature and his love of life. Bert was predeceased by his parents and his brothers-in-law, Garnet Beaupre and John Bjornson. He leaves to mourn his passing his loving and beloved wife, Cherylle; their children, daughter, Maureen (Patrick) Lukan and their children, Kenneth (Shelly and his daughter, Savannah) and Elin (Sean); daughter, Jacalyn (Sheldon) Moldowan and their children, Joseph (Chrissy and children, Tia, Addalyn and Hannah) and Janella (Dustin and son, Brantley); daughter, Cherilyn (Terry) Slenders and their children, Mathew (Briana), Mark and Maurissa and son, Glenn (Scott) and his children, Curtis, Caitlyn and Griffin; sister, Ada (Dave) Werner; sister-in-law, Helen Beaupre; brothers-in-law, Ingemar (Carolyn), Bill, and Gordon (Ellen); sister-in-law, Jill; his aunts, Uldine Harkema and Olga Duff as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and those he considered to be relatives, Carrie, Candace, Brian (Tiny) and Stephen. Funeral Services were held on Wednesday, February 1, 2017 from the Chapel of Christie’s Funeral Home in Yorkton, SK with Shelly Morris officiating. Special taped music selections included “Only Love” by Zamfir, “Amazing Grace” by Elvis Presley and “Go Rest High on That Mountain” by Vince Gill. The urn bearer was Glenn Hasper and the honourary pall bearers were all those who shared in Bert’s life. A private family cremation committal will take place at a later date. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

KIRKHAM - It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of Adeline (Fullawka) Kirkham on Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at the age of 88 years. Adeline was born on December 29, 1928 in Tiny, SK, the ninth of Paul and Agnes Fullawka’s 11 children. After finishing school she left the farm to train and work as a telephone operator. Her next move took her to Saltcoats where she met the love of her life, Bertrand Kirkham. After marrying in 1949, Bert and Adeline enjoyed 53 productive and loving years together before his death in 2002. They shared a successful farming career that spanned over four decades. Along with the help of two of their sons, they expanded Woodlands Farm into a thriving agri-business that included grain production, a feedlot operation and one of the province’s largest turkey enterprises. Never one to shy away from hard work, when not engaged in farm labour, Adeline spent countless hours in her garden, sewing, baking, canning and cooking for her ever growing family. Yet she would still find time to give back to her community. Adeline was a tireless volunteer for the Grahame Guild, Ladies Agricultural Society and especially her church, St. Augustine’s Anglican Church. Her pace did not slow down once she and Bert retired in 1988. She rose to the challenge of designing a new yard, finding more volunteer opportunities and becoming a novice curler in her sixties so she could spend more time with Bert. Adeline always had a coffee and cookie for anyone who came through her door. She never ran out of hugs and was quick to share a good laugh. She was a highly respected friend, an adored mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a cherished wife. But above all, Adeline was a woman of great faith even when it was tested by the loss of her husband, son and granddaughter. Her life in Christ gave her much peace and as she approached her encroaching age and failing health, she was firm in the knowledge that God had prepared a wonderful place for her after her time on this earth was done. She served as a role model and mentor for many people both inside and outside her church walls. Adeline was predeceased by her husband, Bert; son, Perry and granddaughter, Chantelle. She leaves to mourn her sons, Howard (Val), Jeffrey (Julie), Scott (Shelley); daughters, Brenda (Bryon), Sheila (Jim), Della (Stephen); 19 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; sisters, Lucy Elchuk, Dolores (Ignace) Palchewich; sisters-in-law, Sophie Fullawka and Francis Thompson, numerous nieces and nephews and many dear friends, including lifelong friend, Val Trowell. They will all treasure her memory, honour her legacy and attempt to live up to her example as they struggle to find their way without her. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 31, 2017 from Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Yorkton, SK with Reverend Deacon Luanne Hrywkiw officiating. The readers were Jessica Kirkham, Michelle Kirkham and Jenna Yorke. Words of tribute and eulogy were shared by Brenda Godin. The organist, Judy Berg, led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, “Come to the Saviour”, “Precious Lord, Take My Hand”, “Blessed Assurance” and “Safe in the Arms of Jesus”. The Interment Service followed in the Saltcoats Town Cemetery, Saltcoats, SK with Nathan Kirkham, Bradley Kirkham, Cole Kirkham, Luke Wilcox, John Wilcox and Jack Bjarnason serving as the casket bearers. Friends so wishing may make donations in Adeline’s honour to St. Augustine’s Anglican Church, Box 330, Saltcoats, SK, S0A 3R0. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

great-room entrance is a stairwell, protected by railings, to an optional basement. The sleeping wing is separated from the foyer by an archway. The master bedroom boasts French doors that open onto a sun deck, a continuation of the covered deck beyond the great room. The en-suite includes a soaker tub, set in a corner with two windows to let in natural light, as well as double basins and a shower stall. A commodious walk-in closet with built-in shelving completes the lay-out.

The second bedroom, well-separated for noise from the master suite, features a bay window with an extra-wide sill that overlooks the front garden. We laugh, we smile, we play our parts, Behind it all lies broken hearts, Unseen, unheard, you’re always near, So loved, so missed, so very dear. You never said goodbye to us, Perhaps it’s just as well, We never could have said goodbye, To one we loved so well. If teardrops could build a stairway, And memories a lane, We’d walk right up to heaven, And bring you home again. -Sadly missed and forever loved by Lois, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. by Gordon Desormeaux www.chefdez.com food, but also know how to make healthy food taste great. Not only am I conscious of what (and how much) I am putting into my body; we also have a home gym to help facilitate a balanced healthy lifestyle. I will be the first to say that my job has the occupational hazard of constant food sampling, but I also believe that what goes in needs to be burned off. Apparently, in order to lose 1 pound per week, we need to increase the number of calories burned by 500 per day, while keeping our diet maintained at the cur-

rent level. This can also be interpreted as we can alternatively decrease our intake by 500 calories, while keeping our exercising (or lack thereof) at the current level, for the same affect. The increase in your exercise level however, is the better choice of the two as it will lead to better cardiovascular health and an increase in lean muscle tissue, among many other great benefits. Regardless, a great way to reduce the number of calories you eat is to consume what are classified as negative calorie or zero calorie foods.

These can be described as foods that take just as much, or more, energy to consume the food than the number of calories that are in the food. Although there are no hard fact scientific studies to prove this to be true, these types of foods are definitely low in calories and also very nutritious. Some examples of these would be celery, broccoli, cabbage, spinach, garlic, and cucumbers. Of course what you put on these foods, or how you cook them, can add a lot of calories. A good habit to get into is to read the ingredient lists of premade prepackaged foods. A recent trip to the grocery store to buy some “healthy cereal revealed that there are a lot of choices that appear to be good for you on the outside, but upon reading the ingredient list revealed that many were high in sugar. Even natural sugars, such as cane sugar, are still sugars and have many calories. One is better off buying rolled oats (not the instant variety) or 100% shredded wheat and adding some fresh fruit, skim milk, and maybe a zero calorie sweetener such as Splenda or Stevia. Obviously if you are used to eating high sugar cereals, these options may not taste as good at first, but if you can find a way for your mind and taste buds to bask in the fact that you are eating much healthier, then this transition will be easier to swallow. This being said, I believe the main reason why “diets don’t work is because as soon as one eliminates something from their regular eating routine, they want it more. It is human nature to always yearn for something the more we can’t have it. I feel that it is so important to have one splurge meal per week. This way you won’t feel like you are eliminating foods from your enjoyment forever. If you get a craving for something unhealthy, just say to yourself “I am going to have that for my splurge meal this week. Keep in mind that temptations may happen more often than not, so it is best to keep it to one splurge per week and plan to have that splurge at the end of the week, not only to congratulate yourself, but also you will have the chance to use it earlier if something unavoidable comes up. The more you set yourself up for success (having healthy food options available to you at all times for example), the better your outcome will be. The battle is mostly mental. I don’t diet - my occupation can’t allow for that, so what I do instead is lifestyle: making a choice to eat healthy as much as possible because chances are I will live longer and have a better quality of life. People always choose to avoid pain (physical or emotional) and always gravitate towards pleasure. If you can find a way in your mind to compute your healthy lifestyle as pleasurable, your chance of success is much greater. Small steps like these are just that, but the more small steps one takes, the greater the distance one will achieve. Don’t be overwhelmed by the long term goal. Take it day by day and just focus on what counts: today. Do what you can today only. Tomorrow will be another “today when it arrives, but worry about that then. Chef Dez is a Chef, Writer, & Host.
