KOWALISHEN - William ‘Bill’ Kowalishen was born to Mike and Anna Kowalishen (nee Mysko) on the family farm near Stornoway, SK on November 16, 1923. Bill was called by the Lord on October 14, 2016, just one month before his 93rd birthday. The son of Ukrainian immigrant parents, Bill (Vasyl) spoke only Ukrainian when he first attended school. After completing grade eight, he quit school to work on the family farm. As he grew older, he would help his older brothers John, Peter & Steve on their farms as well as helping Peter with his construction business. Bill learned many skills during his life and applied them when he built his two family homes, his big red barn with the silver roof, his farm buildings, the sturdiest swing set around and a set of wooden monkey bars for his daughter. Bill was a carpenter, plumber, electrician, inventor, welder, barber and butcher, but above all else he was a farmer, having lived on his farm south of Kamsack for some sixty years. Just one month before his death he was still dreaming of farming. Bill also enjoyed picking mushrooms, hazelnuts and berries, especially Saskatoons and cranberries. He made the best cabbage borscht, kutia (Christmas wheat), sausage and flavoured vodka from chokecherries. He loved being around people and visiting, having the gift of gab with complete strangers and entertaining people with his God-given talent to sing and play guitar, Hawaiian guitar and the omnichord, all self-taught and played by ear. He was always there to help when neighbours called and when you came to visit him at his home, he’d offer you a drink and send you home with a ring of sausage. In 1948 Bill married Annie Khadiken, with whom he had two daughters, Shirley and Sherle. Annie passed away in 1962, leaving Bill to raise his two daughters with the help of his family and sister, Stella Krupp, whom they lived with for a short time in Yorkton. In 1968 he met Jean Oberkirsch in Regina through a mutual friend and in 1970 they were married. Bill and Jean had one daughter, Karla. Bill leaves to mourn his wife of 46 years, Jean; his daughters Shirley (husband Terry Fluney) and Karla (husband Jason Wilhelm); granddaughters: Andrea (husband Bruce Klassen) and Jacqueline Haller; great-granddaughters, Emily and Ava; a sister, Emilia Dereniwski, as well as numerous cousins, nephews, nieces and friends. The funeral service was held on Thursday, October 20, 2016 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Pastor Stephen Ruten of the Parkland Evangelical Free Church in Kamsack officiating. Scripture was read by Gift Kachur. Special music was provided by Free Spirit, who led in singing ‘Because He Lives’ and ‘Tell Me the Story of Jesus’. The eulogy was given by Angeline Hesje and David Kowalishen. Special recordings Bill had made were played at the funeral: ‘The Old Rugged Cross’, ‘What A Day That Will Be’ and ‘This Land Is My Land’. Honourary bearers were Mike Kuzenko, Paul Cherkas and Jack Fofonoff. The interment took place in the Garden of St. Luke with David Kowalishen, Dennis Mysko, Emil Strutynski, Dennis Tibbett, Barry Stefan and Bernie Nemetchek serving as the casket bearers. Memorials were to the Skinner Unit of the Yorkton & District Nursing Home.

BYBLOW - Mr. Andrew Byblow of Melville, beloved husband of Sylvia Byblow, entered eternal rest on October 20, 2016. He was 83 years of age. Andrew was born on January 8, 1933 in Springside, SK to John and Katherine Byblow. He was one of 13 children and family always played a very important role in his life. He attended school in Springside and later St. Joseph’s College in Yorkton, where he graduated a year early in 1950. He married the love of his life, Sylvia, on January 25, 1953 and had his first son, Daryl in 1955 and his second son Ashley in 1969. Andy, Sylvia and family went on to experience life and travel. Andrew had a gift for meeting people and his wit and charm enabled him to excel in both sales jobs and business ownership. Andrew and Sylvia spent several years as owners of a paint and carpet store in Melville. He sold the business and returned to sales, selling advertising for a Yorkton radio station. In 1980, Andrew and his family relocated to Penticton, BC and Andrew returned to his roots, selling carpet and paint. He retired and returned home to Saskatchewan in 1994 but couldn’t give up work, so he continued to sell carpet and paint in Yorkton. Andrew was far more than work, however. He was a charter member and very active with the Melville Lions Club. He dedicated countless hours to coaching youth baseball and coached both of his sons throughout their lives. His love of making things with his hands led to many a niece or nephew or their children receiving hand-made wooden toys, tables or rocking horses. Andrew was very generous with his time and would never hesitate to help anyone who asked. He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed. Andrew has left us to join his brothers Steve, Vincent and Paul Byblow, his sisters Adele Collins and Minnie Switzer and his brothers-in-law Fred Pawliw and Tony Achtemichuk. Andrew will be looking down and smiling upon Sylvia, his wife of nearly 63 years, his son Daryl (and his wife Cheryl), his son Ashley (and his wife Alicia), his granddaughters Lyndsey (and husband Michael) and Alanna (and husband Justin) and his great-granddaughter Isabella. Andrew will also be looking down and watching over his brother Peter Byblow, his sister Olga Achtemichuk, sister Sonja Pawliw, brother Zenon, sister Jean Spilak, brother-in-law Ed Switzer, sister-in-law Francis Byblow, and sister-in-law Helen Byblow, along with countless nieces and nephews. Prayers were held on Sunday, October 23, 2016 and the Funeral Liturgy Monday, October 24, 2016 at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton with Very Rev. Father Bohdan Lukie, C.Ss.R. as the Celebrant. The cross bearer was Tricia Switzer (Bree Walchuk) and the epistle reader was Jean Spilak. Serving as casket bearers were Grant Walchuk, Steven Byblow, Ed Spilak, Stan Byblow, Michael Twan and Justin Stevens. The interment took place in the Garden of Gethsemane at Yorkton Memorial Gardens. Memorials in memory of Andrew may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society as gifts of remembrance. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.baileysfuneralhome.com

PLAN OF THE WEEK

PLAN NUMBER 5-3648 CLASSIC THREE BEDROOM RANCHER Dormer windows and a large covered front porch lend a Cape Cod look to this classic threebedroom rancher. Wood siding, a cedar-shake roof and rock and shingle trims accent the exterior. Inside, thoughtful touches include a vaulted ceiling in the main

living area and a threesided fireplace that separates the great room from the dining area. The foyer coat closet is topped by a plant ledge. The kitchen will be a hit with any cook, thanks to its V-shaped counter configuration and large pantry. Natural light will flood through the deepsilled window over the double sink. A raised eating bar with seating for two shares space with

a work island fitted with a range top. The dining area enjoys access to a covered deck overlooking the back garden, while the great room’s french doors open on to the covered front porch, providing excellent cross-ventilation in summer. The master bedroom suite overlooks the back garden for privacy. A three-piece ensuite and with a tub, as well as

a walk-in closet, are included. Two secondary bedrooms share another three-piece bathroom with a skylight. The laundry room offers access to the double garage, making this a convenient entry point to the home. In the hall across from the laundry, one closet houses the hot water tank and furnace while another offers storage for linens. This home measures 45 feet wide by 60 feet deep, for a total of 1,499 square feet of space. Plans for design 5-3648 are available for $655 (set of 5), $710 (set of 8) and $754 for a super set of 10. B.C. residents add 7% Prov. Sales Tax. Also add $35.00 for Priority courier charges within B.C. or $65.00 outside of B.C. Please add 5% G.S.T. or 13% H.S.T. (where applicable) to both the plan price and postage charges. Our NEW 48TH Edition of the Home Plan Catalogue containing over 400 plans is available for $15.50 (includes taxes, postage and handling). Weather continuesd to delay harvest Wet and cool weather continues to delay harvest. Frequent rain and snow, along with cool temperatures have stalled harvest for almost three weeks. Eighty-one per cent of the 2016 crop is combined and 15 per cent is swathed or ready to straight-cut, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report. The five year (2011-2015) average for this time of year is 97 per cent combined.

The southeast has 90 per cent of the harvest in the bin. Eighty-five per cent of the crop is combined in the southwest, 79 per cent in the eastcentral region, 73 per cent in the west-central region, 78 per cent is combined in the northwest and 80 per cent is combined in the northeast. There were a few

reports in the southeast of canola and flax being combined over the weekend. Over the past month, harvest progress has been minimal due to wet conditions. Most areas received rain this past week, with areas in the northeast and northwest reporting snow as well. The Moosomin and Moose

Jaw areas reported 15 mm of precipitation, Vanguard 18 mm, Yorkton 35 mm, Outlook 22 mm and Lake Lenore 25 mm. The Meadow Lake area received 35 cm of snow during the past week. Provincially, cropland topsoil moisture is rated as 57 per cent surplus and 43 per cent adequate. Hay land and

pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 30 per cent surplus and 70 per cent adequate. Field conditions are very wet, and some producers are indicating that the ground will have to freeze before combines will be able to get back into the field. There are predictions that some crop will be left out over the winter.

Rain and snow have lodged standing crops. Bleaching and sprouting are causing grade loss. A complete, printable version of Crop Report is available online at h t t p : / / w w w. p u b l i c a tions.gov.sk.ca/redirect. cfm?p=82830&i=95209. Follow the 2016 Crop Report on Twitter at @ SKAgriculture.

Tough fall The poor weather the last couple of weeks has brought harvest to a standstill and raised questions about whether the 2016 crop will all be combined this year. The Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation wants to remind producers they are covered for crop damage as a result of the weather conditions and they can receive an extension of insurance if they cannot harvest their crop by Nov. 15. “The recent snow and rain means resuming harvest is going to be a challenge,” said Shawn Jaques, SCIC President and CEO. “If producers are concerned about not getting their crop harvested, they should contact their local Crop Insurance office and discuss their options.” Nov. 15 is the deadline for producers to file their production information, register claims and request an extension of insurance. An extension ensures the producer is covered for additional losses that occur to their crop over the winter. In the spring, when the producer completes harvesting their crop SCIC will provide compensation for yield or quality downgrading which may have occurred. If weather conditions improve and harvest can resume, producers are still covered for any crop losses that occur as a result of the wind, rain and snow. Crop Insurance customers can receive compensation for both yield loss and quality loss. If producers get their crop harvested but are experiencing a downgrading of the crop they should contact their local Crop Insurance office to report their production information and register a claim..
