GABERT - Gordon Marvle Gabert was born on the family farm in the Springside district of Saskatchewan on July 12, 1925; the son of Rudolph and Dolly (nee Katzberg) Gabert. He received his education at the Grunert School and later Springside School. In 1950 Gordon moved with his parents from the family farm to Yorkton. He was employed at several different establishments, the last was for the City of Yorkton Public Works. Gordon was a very outgoing person who waved at everyone he knew and would stop to talk. He had a good sense of humour and liked to joke around. On September 6, 1969 he was united in marriage to Katherine Burkhardt. They enjoyed travelling around the countryside, stopping for lunch or going to fall suppers. They often travelled to Ontario and Alberta to visit their daughters and to Snow Lake, MB to visit a nephew. Sunday mornings they would attend church at Westview United Church. While their son-in-law Nick was in RCMP training, their daughter Linda and children Brandy and Jade lived with them for two years. Those grandchildren were the joy of his life. Around 1995 Katherine’s health began to decline and Gordon took very good care of her. When she became a permanent resident of the Yorkton and District Nursing Home in December of 1997, Gordon would visit daily to care for her. Katherine passed away in 2000. Sometime later he was introduced to Valetta Miskolczi. They became good friends and companions. When Valetta’s health declined he would go to her apartment to let home-care workers in and see that all her needs were met - buying groceries, etc. When she became a resident of the nursing home he would go daily at meal times. After Valletta’s death in 2012, Gordon moved to the Bentley. From there he made several more moves until becoming a resident of the Yorkton & District Nursing Home on October 5th of this year. Gordon passed away Sunday morning, November 5. He was 91 years of age. Besides his wife Katherine, Gordon was predeceased by his parents; brothers Randolph and Bert; sister Elsie and brother-in-law Leslie Lange; sister Gracie and brother-in-law Edwin Bohn; daughter Florence; daughter Linda and son-in-law Nick Wentoniuk; sons-in-law Jim Rutherford and Albert Finch. Gordon is survived by his daughters: Irene Rutherford, Penny Giraurd, Judith Finch; several grandchildren & great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Alice Gabert, and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral service was held on Saturday, November 12, 2016 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre. Rev. Deborah Smith of Westview United Church officiated. Organist, Amanda Buhler led the congregation in the hymns ‘In the Garden’, and ‘How Great Thou Art’. The recessional hymn was ‘Beyond the Sunset’. The interment followed in the Garden of Gethsemane with Elroy Penner, Judy Finch, and David & Virginia Charette serving as the casket bearers. Memorials were to the Health Foundation.

PARKER - Mr. Bill Parker of Yorkton, beloved husband of Peggie Parker passed away Thursday, November 4, 2016 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. John William George Parker, or “Bill” as he was more affectionately known, was born on October 4, 1940 in Yorkton, SK; a son of John Henry “Jack” and Dorothy (nee Lockhart) Parker. Bill had a happy upbringing with his three siblings Bette Lou Hagen, Pat Slessor and Joe Parker. Bill had many loves growing up including playing the piano, enjoying hockey with his friends, animals and talking about cars. As a youngster, he was in cubs and then later joined the sea cadets. Bill loved sharing about the three months he spent on a destroyer in Asia during his Grade 12 year with the sea cadets. Bill was a great big brother and loved playing tricks on his two little sisters. Many Saturday afternoons during the winter were spent skating with his siblings at the old arena while his dad did the books. As a teenager Bill’s love of cars continued and he especially enjoyed cruising with his friends around town in his white convertible Austin Healey. As a family, they spent summer vacations golfing, swimming and horseback riding at Clear Lake. If you ever needed to find Bill he would have been at the roller rink, golf course or having a thick chocolate milkshake at Meldrum’s. Cruising around the lake one night he stopped at the Wigwam where he met his future wife Peggie. Bill graduated from Yorkton Collegiate Institute in 1958. He then followed in his father’s footsteps by graduating from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of Commerce 1963 and then received his designation of Charted Accountant in 1966. Shortly after graduation, Bill joined his father working at Parker Quine and Company and became a partner in the firm in 1969. For forty-eight years Bill loved meeting and working with his clients in the Yorkton area and took over many of his father’s clients upon J.H.’s retirement. On July 24, 1965, Bill was united in marriage to Peggie Clark in Brandon, MB. Shortly thereafter, they started their family and had three children, Bob, Jacki-Lyn and Jason. Bill was a dedicated father and very involved in their lives. He never passed up an opportunity to go for a ride in one of Bob’s helicopters, help mark exams and assignments for Jacki-Lyn, and travel to and volunteer time at Jason’s speed skating events. As a family, they enjoyed carrying on the family traditions of spending summers at Clear Lake and going to the Saskatchewan Roughrider games (even through the rough years) and watching them together on television. Bill retired in 2007 and was able to enjoy eight years escaping the Saskatchewan winters to sunny Arizona. He enjoyed the warm weather, time with family and friends, golfing, walking and Peggie’s amazing cooking. A new, even softer side of Bill came with the arrival of his grandchildren, Shelby and Kayden. He never missed an opportunity to give a big “bear hug” from “Pappa” and you could always see his eyes light up when they entered the room. The sheer entertainment value of watching the grandchildren play around resulted in loads of his big booming belly laughs. He loved going for walks with them, being the race car track for Kayden to drive his cars on, watching them sing and dance, listening to Shelby learn to read and Kayden’s non-stop talking. Pappa’s beautiful blue eyes will live on in them and all our hearts. Bill was taken from us on Thursday, Nov. 4, 2016 at the Yorkton Hospital from pancreatic cancer that had spread into his liver and kidneys. He handled the end with grace and dignity, surrounded by family. He had just celebrated his 76th birthday one month earlier. Bill was predeceased by his parents, John Henry and Dorothy. Bill leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Peggie of Yorkton, three children: son, Bob of Yorkton; daughter, Jacki-Lyn of Cochrane, AB; and son, Jason (Kristen) and their children Shelby and Kayden of Millarville, AB.; his two sisters, Bette Lou (Cec) Hagen of Gabriola Island, BC and Pat (Al) Slessor of Calgary, AB; one brother, Joe (Gloria) Parker of Saskatoon, SK; his brother and sister in laws, Trudie Murray, Sharon Daoust, Bruce Clark (Karen), Dale Clark (Debbie), David Clark (Patty) and Bill Clark (Wanda); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Rev. Nancy Brunt of Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Kamsack officiating. An Instrumental Recessional was provided by Ben Parker. The organist, Shani Apland accompanied in the musical selections, ‘In the Garden’, ‘Just as I am’ and ‘How Great thou Art’. Tributes and Words of Remembrance were shared by Bob, Jacki-Lyn and Jason Parker, Joe Parker and Yvonne Strocen. The readings were given by sister in law, Trudie Murray and niece, Kristi Torwalt. The interment will take place in the Garden of Memories at Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Bob, Jacki-Lyn and Jason Parker as the urn bearers. Memorials in memory of Bill may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada, the Yorkton S.P.C.A or to the Canadian Olympic Foundation as gifts of remembrance. age of 84 years on October 29, 2016 at the Yorkton and District Nursing Home. Prayers were held on Friday, November 4, 2016 from St. Andrew’s United Church in Canora, SK. A funeral service was held on Saturday, November 5, 2016 also from St. Andrew’s United Church in Canora, SK. A private family interment followed. Alice Eleanor Popoff was born on March 27, 1932 on a farm North of Veregin to Gottlieb and Mary (Hnyoway) Joss. She had one sister Gladys (Chutskoff) Daum. She lived with her parents on the farm and went to school at Pretty View School, completing grade 9. Alice married William (Bill) Allan Popoff in 1951 at Westminster United Church in Kamsack. They farmed for three years north of Veregin and then moved to the Mikado district in 1955 where they farmed until 2006. Alice and Bill were blessed with two children - Donna in 1956 and Daryl in 1958. For most of her married life Alice was a stay at home mom and farmer’s wife. She was busy from the moment she got out of bed at 6 am until she finally laid her head down at 10 pm. Alice’s chores included; looking after the house, four gardens, helping Bill with harvest, butchering chickens, baking bread, canning, milking cows, picking eggs, cutting grass, looking after her amazing flowers, grandparenting and cooking everyone’s favourite dishes. Since this didn’t keep her busy enough - Alice went to work for Home care and later with the housekeeping department at the Canora Hospital. She worked there until 1992 when she retired to stay in Yorkton with Donna’s children, while Donna attended school for nine months. Alice was a member of St. Andrew’s United Church in Canora and the UCWL and thoroughly enjoyed the plays they hosted. Alice and Bill loved dancing. They took dancing lessons and attended many dances held in Canora and surrounding communities. Alice also loved to travel. Her first trip was to Switzerland with her dad in 1972. She went back to Switzerland a few times and also ventured to Russia, Alaska, Las Vegas, Florida, Maritimes, Churchill, Nashville and British Columbia. After retirement, Alice’s grandchildren became her life. Grandma made quilts for each of the grandchildren when they were born and when they ‘graduated’ to a bigger bed. She also crocheted table clothes as a wedding gift. Grandma knew everyone’s favourite food and had all of the recipes mastered homemade bread, cabbage rolls, Russian borscht and Valentine’s cookies. She went to hockey games, Christmas concerts, graduations, competitions and many other events in which her grandchildren participated - if it was important to them, Alice was there! After years of hard work Alice and Bill decided to sell the farm in 2006 and move to Canora. They lived there until 2010 when they decided to move to Queen Elizabeth Court in Yorkton. Alice lived there until last fall when she was moved to the Yorkton and District Nursing Home. Alice was predeceased by her husband William; parents Gottlieb and Mary; sister Gladys; mother-in-law Anna Popoff and brothers-in-law Philip Daum, Mike Chutskoff, Fred and Pete Popoff. Alice will be sadly missed by her children Donna (Wes) Uhryn and Daryl (Karen) Popoff; grandchildren who were dear to her, Jaimie (Tyler) Husulak, Jason (Laura) Uhryn, Twyla (Jeff) Froese, Jenna and Eric Popoff. She also had three great-grandchildren that made her smile Adam and Hannah Husulak and Emily Uhryn. Arrangements have been entrusted to Andrychuk Funeral Home.
HERTZKE - VIOLET of Yorkton, beloved wife of the late Hugo Hertzke was lifted up to heaven in the arms of her Lord in the early hours of Saturday, November 5, 2016 at the age of 98. She was born January 10, 1918 in Frauenburg, Latvia to Adolph and Natalie (Hait) Rutch. When she was about 4 years old she came to Canada with her parents and younger brother Albert. They came to Canada by ship and landed in Halifax, and then traveled on by train to their relatives the Haits who farmed near Ebenezer, SK. Violet helped with the outdoor chores as well as in the kitchen and received her education in the area. She was a devoted Christian and went to church regularly. On July 12, 1937 she married Hugo Hertzke and they farmed in the Gorlitz and then Ebenezer district for a while before they moved to the farm near Yorkton in the Orkney area. She also was a good cook and great baker and took a cake decorating course in Yorkton. She made many wonderful chiffon cakes for her friends and neighbors. People in town will also remember her for the cottage cheese and eggs that she sold. She always wanted to help people so she became a foster mom for several children over the years. Violet had many good friends and neighbors and will be missed by her dearest friend Joyce Muir who was always there for her. After her husband died in 1990 she and her oldest son Harvey ran the farm. After Harvey went into the Nursing Home she continued alone on the farm renting it out but keeping her garden and the flowers that she loved. In Memoriam
WILHELM - With loved ones at her bedside, Lois Evelyn Wilhelm was summoned to her eternal rest in the early morning hours of November 11, 2016 at the age of 88 years. Lois was born on February 23, 1928 in Estevan, SK to Percy and Evelyn Drader. Lois received her Nursing Degree from the Regina General Hospital. On June 29, 1949, she married Arthur Wilhelm, and for the next several years skillfully balanced her career while raising 7 children. From 1961 1971 Lois worked at the Yorkton Regional Hospital where she loved working in the maternity ward. In 1971, Art found employment with Kaiser Resources. Lois retired from her nursing career and the couple settled in Fernie with their 4 youngest children. Together Art and Lois built 3 motorhomes, each one a bit better that the one before. Many miles were put on those motorhomes they called “Arlow” (Art + Lois + Wilhelm), visiting family and friends along the way. Following Art’s death in 1978, Lois once again returned to the work force, working for Fernie Homemakers, Canadian Mental Health and the Community Living Association in Lethbridge and Cranbrook. When she finally retired, Lois moved to Creston where she lived for 41/2 years until returning to her beloved Fernie in 1997. Lois’ life centered around her large family; there was almost always some celebration or get together to look forward to. “GG” will be remembered for her cheeky sense of humour, her unique driftwood creations, her rock collection, famous apple pies and raisin bread, and her love of hockey and football. Try as they did, no one was ever able to dethrone the Queen of Scrabble! Lois was inspired at an early age to live a Christian life. In her own words, her greatest inspiration was brought to light with the birth of her youngest child, Cora Lee, who was born with Downs Syndrome. She continued to live her life helping and caring for those less fortunate. She “attempted to do His will”. Her chosen epitaph: “Never, never worry!” Lois’ legacy will continue to live on within the hearts of her family; her 7 children: Lyle (Donna) Wilhelm, Leo (Sue) Wilhelm, Wayne (June) Wilhelm, Rhonda (Ken) Clarke, Lynda (John) Gawryluk, Wes Wilhelm and Cora Lee (Chris) Snoeks; 18 grandchildren, and 30 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Vernon (Lyla) Drader, her sister Dorothy MacKenzie, and her “other” sisters, sisters-in-law Ann Leibrecht and Grace (Art) Dore, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Arthur, brothers Manford (Clara), Welland (Leila), and Clifford (Austena) Drader, her brother-in-law Murray MacKenzie and her sister-in-law Dorothy (Herman) Rhinas. Funeral Services were held at Cherished Memories “Serenity Chapel” on Tuesday, November 15. Cremation followed and Lois was laid to rest with Art … a glorious reunion to be sure! Should family & friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations graciously accepted for a fund that will be set up for Cora Lee. Memories & condolences shared at www.cherishedmemoriesfs.com. Arrangements entrusted to Cherished Memories Funeral Services Ltd.
