30, 2016 at the Canora Hospital at the age of 87 years. Helen was born at the family farm north-east of Canora, SK in the Phoenix School District on October 6, 1928 to George and Helen (Hancheroff) Popoff. Sadly, her mother died when Helen was two years of age. Her father, George, remarried Mabel Salikan. She and older sister Pauline were joined by half-brother Russell. Helen attended Phoenix school near Canora. Helen and the family moved to Toronto in 1940. The young Helen worked at a Campbell’s soup factory, a can factory and at Woolworths. At the age of seventeen, Helen and her sister returned to Canora area to prepare for Pauline’s wedding. Helen’s parents returned soon after. In July 1947, Helen married Bill Holoboff of Tiny and became a farm wife on their farm west of Tiny. Bill and Helen had two daughters, Sarah and Linda and a son, Wayne. Bill and Helen built a new home in Canora in 1964. A year later, Bill died. Helen married Paul Pohozoff on December 1, 1966 and they were married for forty years. Helen worked in various stores including Steven’s Jewelry, Mary’s Clothing and Fabric Store, the Co-op Clothing Store and lastly, the Canora IGA. Helen was active in the Canora and surrounding communities as her and Paul loved to travel and socialize. Square dancing was a favourite of theirs. Helen was also involved with the Eastern Star, the Keen Age Centre, the Hospital and Nursing Home Auxiliaries, the United Church Board and the UCW in Canora. Through the later parts of their lives, Paul and Helen travelled to Yuma, AZ to spend their winters. They enjoyed it when their children visited there. Through her life Helen also travelled through Canada, to Cuba, the USSR, England, Mexico and many parts of the USA. Helen valued her opportunities to travel and to have met so many good friends along the way. In 1997, Paul and Helen sold the house in Canora and moved into Yorkton eventually moving into their condo at Erichsen Place. In 2006, Paul passed away. Two years later Helen moved into the Bentley and once again made new friends where John Stricker became her special friend. She enjoyed the visiting, card games and tile rummy. She lived here until her illness forced her to hospital. Helen found pride and comfort from her children and grandchildren. She recounted her very fond memories of the visits and happy times with them. She was tickled pink that her first great-grandchild was born on her birthday. Helen was predeceased by her parents, Helen and George, her step-mother, Mabel, her two husbands Bill Holoboff and Paul Pohozoff, her sister Pauline Derhousoff and her half-brother Dr. Russell Popoff. Helen will remain in the hearts of her daughters Sarah (Herb) Carlson and Linda (Maurice) Belliveau, her son Wayne (Deborah) Holoboff, her grandchildren Leif (Brenda) Carlson, AnnaMarie (Stephen) Bohrson, Jeffrey Belliveau and Janessa Belliveau, her great-grandchildren Lilaina, Miles and Paige as well as her nieces, nephews, cousins, sister-in-law Gwen Popoff and the many friends that she made throughout her life. A Celebration of Life Service was held on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at 1:00 pm from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora with Rev. Carlyle Johnson officiating. Interment followed in the Canora Cemetery. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the Canora Hospital Auxiliary or to a Charity of Donor’s Choice as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Helen Pohozoff. Family and friends unable to attend may sign an on-line guest book for Helen at www.lesonsfuneralhome.ca. Arrangements were entrusted to LESON’S FUNERAL HOME, Canora.

She is predeceased by her parents Daniel and Elysa Pelletier (nee Cappo); brothers; Donald and Ivan; sisters; Yvonne, Lorena, Eulalie, Mary (Hall); nieces; Constable Ivy Redgun (nee Pelletier), Stacey Brass; nephews; Ronald Hall and Constable Lionel Poitras. Merylene leaves to celebrate her life and cherish her memory, daughter; Darcy (Darcella) Pelletier of Yorkton; sons; Donald Smith (Jenn) of Airdrie, AB; Kevin Lorenz (Colleen) of Pense, SK; adopted daughter Eva Lerat, Saskatoon; grandchildren, Shelby Lorenz (Rhea), Branden Robillard, Shanda Lorenz (Cody), Drae Pelletier, Xenon Harpe; adopted grandson Jarod Lerat; great-grandchildren, Isabella, Ryder and Maverick and her sister Geraldine Pelletier of Regina, SK; as well as many nieces, nephews and family members. Merylene, (Eagle Woman-Kinewiqwe) was born on August 17, 1936 at Muscowpetung Reserve to Daniel Pelletier and Elysa (nee Cappo). The Pelletier family lived on Muscowpetung where Daniel helped his father-in-law, Headman Patrick Cappo with farming. Eventually, the Pelletier’s left the reserve and settled in the Crescent Lake District near Yorkton where they purchased a farm to raise their children. Merylene was the fourth eldest of seven children. As a young girl, by age 7, Merylene was responsible for preparing meals, baking bread and taking care of her younger brothers and sisters. The family worked hard and helped each other. These values influenced and shaped Merylene’s life. Merylene’s education began at the Ituna Orphanage where she attended school with her older sisters, Lorena and Geraldine. Later, Merylene attended Meadowview School where she completed grade 8. In 1951, Premier Tommy Douglas presented Merylene and two other graduates with their Grade 8 Diplomas. Merylene continued her high school education in Lebret, SK. Merylene continued to further her education through university classes in the area of Social Work. Merylene was active in the Association of Metis and Non-status Indians of Saskatchewan and was eventually appointed to their provincial board which led to the creation of The Gabriel Dumont Institute and the SUNTEP (Saskatchewan Urban Native Teacher Education Program). Throughout her life, she promoted and valued the importance of education. In 1963, Merylene married Albert Lorenz when the twins, Darcy and Donny, were born, the family resided in Regina. The Lorenz family re-located in Yorkton where their son, Kevin was born. Merylene, or Aunty Bubbles, was like a mother to several nieces and nephews. She enjoyed spending time with family whether travelling to pow-wows, conferences or attending meetings. She enjoyed playing cards and sitting around the kitchen table visiting with her family. Merylene loved her grandchildren, playing games with them, taking them places and going on family road trips. She was blessed with three great-grandchildren. Merylene worked at Social Services where she was employed for nine years. During that time, Merylene was a politically active member in the Association of Metis and Non-status Indians. Eventually, Merylene left her government job to work with her people. She was the director of the Native Alcohol Counselling Program and as an Economic Development Worker. While in Regina, Merylene was employed as the Director of the Girls Treatment Centre in Regina and as a family support worker. In 1989 Merylene returned to Yorkton and was a councillor at Shelwin House until she retired in 2001 at the age of 65. Merylene was a hardworking, independent woman who was dedicated to helping her family. She never liked to see anyone struggle and was more than willing to offer assistance. Our mom, Merylene, will be deeply missed but always loved and cherished by those who knew her. Prayers were held on Tuesday evening, October 4, 2016 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Fr. Francis Hengen of St. Gerard’s Roman Catholic Church officiating. Pianist, Diana Hornung led members of the Parish Choir in the singing of the hymns ‘Day is Done’, Psalm 27 and ‘Christ Be Our Light’. The lay-reader was Colleen Lorenz. The Funeral Mass was celebrated on Wednesday, October 5, 2016 from St. Gerard’s Roman Catholic Church in Yorkton with Fr. Hengen officiating. The casket bearers were Skyler, Misha & Daniel Pelletier, Travis Kennedy, Jarod Lerat and Jessy Eklund. The interment took place in the Yorkton City Cemetery. The crisis of violence against Indigenous women In late September, Inuit artist Annie Pootoogook died tragically in Ottawa. Pootoogook was an award-winning illustrator from Cape Dorset, Nunavut. Her ink-andcrayon depictions of everyday life in the north — families sitting to eat a meal of seal meat or shopping at the Arctic co-op — received international acclaim. In contrast to the idealized vision many Canadians have of the north, of majestic rock and ice landscapes or charismatic wildlife like polar bears, Pootoogook’s drawings often reflected the crushing poverty northern families face and its devastating impacts on their health and well-being. Ottawa police believe Pootoogook’s death is suspicious — she may have been the victim of
foul play. If so, Annie Pootoogook is yet another Indigenous woman to die violently in Canada. Indigenous women and girls are at least three times more likely to experience violence than non-Indigenous women and six times more likely to be murdered. On any given day, thousands of First Nations, Inuit and Métis women and children are living in emergency shelters to escape abuse (though on-reserve shelters remain woefully underfunded). The RCMP hasn’t kept accurate statistics on the number of murdered or missing people, but Indigenous women’s organizations and affected families have reported hundreds of cases of loved ones who have been victims of violent crime. After years of indifference

Science Matters and inaction, Canada’s government has finally launched an inquiry into the many lives lost to violence. Although the national inquiry into murdered and missing Indigenous women won’t investigate cases police previously examined, it will look at broader factors that put Indigenous women and girls at such great risk. According to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women, this includes institutional racism, social and economic marginalization and inadequate access to affordable housing so women can escape abusive relationships. Police forces have often failed to deal with violence against Indigenous peoples, and officers themselves have been implicated or charged with assaults and sexual abuse. Human-rights organ-
izations such as Amnesty International and Kairos have also drawn attention to resource development in Indigenous territories, where the influx of transient workers — along with money, alcohol and drugs from outside the community — puts Indigenous women at risk of aggressive harassment and violence by men. As environmentalists, we often emphasize the impacts of mining or oil and gas development on wildlife and ecosystems but ignore the staggering social consequences for Indigenous communities, especially women. Amnesty International’s research on the social impacts of resource development in northeast B.C.’s booming Peace Region has uncovered numerous accounts of attacks on women and girls, including “domestic violence, encounters with strangers that ranged from
aggressive harassment to brutal violence, including unsolicited offers of drugs and money for sex, sexual assault and gang rapes.” These stories are heart-breaking, but the response from Indigenous peoples brings hope. One such grassroots effort is the Moose Hide Campaign, a growing movement of Aboriginal and nonAboriginal men dedicated to ending violence against women and children, through education and peer support, encouraging men to develop healthier relationships with the women in their lives. The Moose Hide Campaign was created by a young First Nations girl named Raven Lacerte and her father, Paul, in British Columbia. Working with First Nations hunters, they have distributed more than 250,000 small moosehide squares to communities across Canada — encouraging men to wear the pins as symbols of their commitment to be accountable for their behaviour and to reject violence. What makes the campaign particularly poignant is that Raven and her father made the first pins from the hide of a moose

they harvested near the infamous Highway of Tears between Prince George and Prince Rupert, where dozens of Indigenous women have gone missing or been found murdered. The inquiry into the crisis of murdered and missing Indigenous women and girls is long overdue and is a testament to the hard work and leadership of Indigenous women and communities who have spent decades calling for an inquiry. It will proceed over the next few years and will make recommendations to governments, police and other agencies. We must also take personal action to end violence by participating in initiatives like the Moose Hide Campaign, which bring people together to promote healing. These are important steps for all Canadians to embrace if we are to advance reconciliation. David Suzuki is a scientist, broadcaster, author and co-founder of the David Suzuki Foundation. Let me begin this week by saying I’m glad I don’t have to choose between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton on my ballot. I really don’t know what I’d do. However, there were a few things I noticed this weekend that aren’t sitting well with me and I know you will think that makes me a Trump supporter; but really all I’m doing is calling it as I see it and it just so happens the odds are stacked against Trump big time. If he, somehow, wins it will be a damning indictment on a lot of people, not the least of which will be the mainstream US media. First of all, during the debate on Sunday night; it was apparent the two moderators were proClinton and pro-Democrat. There can be no disputing that. I did a bit of homework on Martha Raddatz, and she has a history of being a Hillary supporter. Anderson Cooper has long been a lefty, so I didn’t even bother researching
him. Before the debate started, CNN had their set back dropped with Hillary supporters. This is inappropriate and inflammatory to people in the public who really don’t understand and think the media is reporting facts and not twisting statements to favor the candidate their corporation wants to win. I used to rely on media (used to even be one) to give me the information and then I’ll make my own decision based on what’s been put in front of me as opposed to wondering if I have all the information and what parts of the information are biased or misrepresented.

The one-liner of the debate was when Clinton said it was a good thing Trump wasn’t in charge of the justice system based on his temperament. Trump replied with, “That’s because you’d be in jail.” He’s referring, of course, to a recent FBI investigation of Clinton (that was bogus, really) of the Presidential candidate. However, a number of mainstream media outlets reported afterwards that Trump was to be feared because he may put his competition in jail after the election. This is nonsense, very misleading and irresponsible reporting. But, who polices CNN or CBC? Which now brings me to the topic I don’t stand to win with anyone but I’m going to approach it anyway: the audio tapes from 2005 where Trump makes disparaging sexual remarks about women. I won’t argue whether most men talk this way at some point in their life. I won’t argue that a private, albeit very rude, conversation from eleven years ago isn’t relevant to this Presidential campaign, and I won’t argue whether these comments constitute sexual assault, even though there isn’t a victim to be found anywhere. You’d think had Trump actually done this to someone that now would be an excellent time to come forward. My point on this is that we are living in a time where it’s extremely difficult for women who are sexually assaulted to get the justice they deserve, so until we fix that very big problem in our legal system, I don’t really care what Donald Trump said as a means of showing off eleven years ago. There are sexual predators walking the streets who have victimized many women and not a single
thing has been done to them. Let’s be, equally, outraged at the criminals and those who have skirted the law for the physical and emotional damage that has been inflicted on tangible people. Trump, to my knowledge, doesn’t have a victim. Let’s take Trump at his word and say that powerful men assume they can get whatever they want from a woman (I’ll also say that there are a number of women out there who don’t mind giving anything and everything if it means they get to share in some wealth). That means, these powerful men that have been accused of sexually assaulting women really need to have their lives torn apart a bit more than what we’ve seen. I feel that, more often, we see the woman having their life ripped apart and her lifestyle scrutinized and judged more so than the man. Let’s remember how upset we were with the Trump remarks the next time a high profile sex assault case hits the news. Should Donald Trump win this election, remember he can’t unilaterally impose a bunch of crazy laws that will set off a World War. He has to play ball with the Senate and he has softened, already, on some of his hard line opinions with regards to refugees and the Mexican wall. For me, I expect Clinton to win. But, if she doesn’t, I wonder what this will mean for mainstream media in the United States. In Canada, we proved last October that we accept what CBC tells us as fact as Trudeau promised to keep them afloat and the massive PR campaign was well under way at that point. In the States, a Trump win means nobody is listening to these influential talking heads and I can only hope it would signal a return to balanced reporting as it would be proof Americans notice the bias and are rejecting it. Nice person mentions: Darci Kirkwood, Peter Kingson, Jeannine Lesann, and Brendan Wagner.
