ACHTEMICHUK Wilhelmine (Willie) Achtemichuk beloved wife of the late George Achtemichuk passed away peacefully at the Yorkton Nursing home on June 4, 2017. She was 91 years of age. Wilhelmine was born Oct. 26, 1925 on the family farm in the Rhein area, a daughter of Jacob and Amalie (nee Miller) Herman. She grew up on the family farm and received her primary education at New Canadian School in the Rhein area and as a result of her mother’s untimely passing she stayed on the farm and helped raise the younger members of the family. In 1951 she was united in marriage to George Achtemichuk and continued to live in Rhein. In 1952 George and Wilhelmine were blessed with one son, Norman. They both worked at Lucky Dollar store in Rhein, George as a butcher and Willie as a cashier until 1963. They purchased a grocery store in Melville and successfully ran it for three years. In 1967 the family moved to Yorkton where she gained employment with Canada Safeway and was a dedicated and loyal employee for 21 years until her retirement. She was a devoted caring wife, mother, sister and friend. Her outgoing and friendly personality, infectious smile and great sense of humor befriended everyone who came to know her. She always made time to listen to her friends and family and help in anyway she could whether it was through her work or through her gift of baking. She lived a rich full life enjoying friend’s family and neighbors. Upon retiring, Willie and George enjoyed a wonderful life together doing what they loved. One of their favorite hobbies was packing up a lunch (that they loved to share with friends) and heading off to a ballgame in and around the area. No game was too far away. They loved to watch ball and share their time and their lunch with friends they made along the way. They also enjoyed watching the Cardinals and Terriers in Yorkton and watching Blue Jays and Oilers on TV and of course Mom’s favorite watching curling. After George’s passing, mom spent time with her two loving sisters Emma and Isabel. The Herman girls (as they were referred to), were well known and well liked by everyone who shared time with them. They stayed close to each other having coffee or sharing garage sales and helping each other through life’s journey’s. Willie had a huge passion for baking and was well known for her amazing “trays of goodies”. Willie had a lifelong dream of writing a cookbook and in 2002 with the help of her very special niece Bonnie and her son Norman she completed her lifelong dream. The book was called “Baking with Auntie Willie” as she was everyone’s Aunt. The book was an immediate hit! The Herman girls with help of family and friend soon sold out the first print and another one was ordered as selling to friends, family and garage sales created a huge demand. How she beamed when talking about making her cookbook and her baking and how other people so enjoyed her efforts as she always had a tray for someone to take home. She enjoyed her church, St. Paul Lutheran and was a faithful member. Willie was a resident at the Yorkton Nursing home since 2012 where she received loving care from the staff at Orkney House. Wilhelmine was predeceased by her husband George, her parents, Jacob and Amalie Herman, her stepmother Caroline, her sister Emma and husband Edmund Mehling, her brother Herbert Herman, her sister Isabel and husband Sydney Wolfe, her nephew Clifford Wolfe and her niece Marilyn Grenier. She leaves to cherish her memory her son Norman and his special friend Judy (Jude) Wilkie, her special niece Bonnie and husband Darrell Mirva, her stepbrother Fred Steininger, sister in law Phyllis Herman along with many nephews, nieces, family relatives, friends and co-workers. The funeral service was held on Friday, June 9, 2017 from St. Paul Lutheran Church in Yorkton. Pastor Heike Toeller officiated, assisted by Margaret Anne Yost. Organist, Verna Liebrecht led the congregation in the singing of the hymns ‘Softly & Tenderly Jesus is Calling, ‘I Know That My Redeemer Lives’, and ‘God Be With You Till We Meet Again’. The interment took place in the Garden of St. Mark at the Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Bonnie Mirva serving as the urn bearer. Memorials were to St. Paul Lutheran Church. Condolences can be left at baileysfuneralhome.com.

CLARK - Alice Clark of Yorkton, SK, formally from Churchbridge, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2017 at her residence in Morris House of Yorkton and District Nursing Home at the age of 88 years. Alice Margaret Clark was born on June 2, 1929 and raised on the family farm in Spy Hill, SK. Alice was the daughter of Frank and Mary (nee Smith) Baseley, and older sister to Frederick W. Baseley. Alice attended school in Spy Hill. On May 6, 1967 Alice married Robert George Clark of Spy Hill, SK. They were married at St. Andrews United Church in Yorkton, SK. Robert and Alice resided on the family farm in Churchbridge, SK where they raised their two daughters, Mary Ann and Mabel. Alice was a loving and supportive wife and mother who worked alongside her husband Robert (Bob). Together they worked hard as grain farmers, raising a beef herd and later moved into dairy farming. Alice was an avid gardener, often having two to three gardens each year. She had a green thumb and knew all there was to know about growing geraniums and Christmas cactus. Alice loved canning and making jam which she often made after picking saskatoons or chokecherries from the wild and raspberries, cranberries, and strawberries from her own garden. She loved to bake and often got up early each morning to make cookies or cake for her daughter’s lunches for school. Weekly she always made bread so the family could enjoy fresh bread and cinnamon buns right out of the oven. She made her own butter and ice cream and the best homemade cream puffs. She enjoyed knitting and taught her girls how to knit also. She took time out of her busy day to drive her girls to and from sporting activities, school events or 4-H meetings and shows. Alice loved her animals, her cats and dogs, the cattle and horses. She was always there to help get the horses ready for 4-H, and the horse shows. She took an active interest in her daughter’s pets and horses, always asking every time they talked, how are the cats, or how are the horses. She loved to play cards with her husband and their friends or neighbors, or just having a coffee and a visit. She always made sure everyone ate, whether they were there for a visit or working on the farm. She loved her three grandsons, Cody (Taryn) and Mitchell born to Mary Ann (Dwight) Yacyshyn and Riley born to Mabel (Kim) Lazecki. In 2001 Alice and Robert retired and moved into Churchbridge where they lived together until Robert’s passing on January 26, 2006. This is also when she became an avid Blue Jays fan. She tried not to miss any Blue Jays games and often could give you all the details of each game including pitches, home runs and who had the bad umpires. She was also a dedicated curling fan and looked forward to watching each game. Alice continued to live in Churchbridge until her health forced her to move to the nursing home in 2013 where she resided until her passing. During this time, she loved making puzzles and watching her ball games and old movies with John Wayne. Alice was predeceased by her parents Frank and Mary Baseley, her husband Robert Clark, her brother Frederick Baseley, sister-in-law Evelyn Baseley, brother-in-law Frederick Clark, sister-in-law Mabel Celino, brother-in-law Wallace Clark. WRIGHT - Val Wright, widow of the late Duncan Wright, longtime Yorkton resident, passed away on Sunday, June 4, 2017. She was 79 years of age. Val was born on May 16, 1938, in Rhein, SK. She grew up in Yorkton where she attended Simpson School and YCI. After graduation she moved to Saskatoon where she worked at the Royal Bank. She met the love of her life Duncan at a party in 1961 and they were married on October 6, 1962, at St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Yorkton. God blessed them with 41 years of love. They began their life together in Yorkton where they built their home and filled it with memories. Val worked at the Royal Bank until Cory was born in November 1968, Cara followed in August 1970, and Candace in January 1973. Val loved being a mom and was an amazing domestic engineer - as she liked to be called. When she wasn’t busy answering phone calls and doing Duncan’s books for the family business, she could be found in her garden, in the kitchen cooking or baking, in the basement ironing everything from jeans to pillowcases, sewing baton and Halloween costumes or the latest star wars bedding for Cory. She liked to read a good romance novel and the newspaper, watch soaps, game and cooking shows, curling and figure skating, and skunking someone at a game of crib. She loved when friends stopped by for a visit, hand numbing phone calls with her sisters and brothers or cousin Bob and all day shop til you drop. She had some amazing collections of spoons, thimbles, salt and pepper shakers, snow babies, antique glass, purses, shoes and coats! One of her proudest accomplishments was beating breast cancer. But her favourite role was being Grams to Eric and Danielle. There were many puzzles put together, games played, questions answered, stories told, laughter and hugs. She was always baking them their favourite nanaimo bars and scuffles, and with much love and patience taught them both to win and lose at crib. Mom was the heart and foundation of the family. She leaves a legacy of love and our hearts rich in memories. Predeceased by her parents Raymond and Pauline (nee Poppenheim) Peppler; husband Duncan in January 2004; sister Caren and brothers-in-law Keith Schmaltz and Ken Sokolan. She will be lovingly remembered by son Cory; daughters Cara (Rheal) and Candace; her grandchildren Eric and Danielle; her sister Marva Schmaltz, brothers Clint (Rayna) and Randy (Faye), many nieces and nephews and special friends and neighbours. CROPP - David Bruce Cropp (March 06, 1957 - June 01, 2017). David grew up on his family’s mixed farm located just north of Gerald, SK. He attended school in Langenburg where his mother, Mary taught for years. As a young lad, David was part of the 4-H club where he prided himself in excellent animal husbandry and enjoyed winning the odd award. David was raised with much love from his extended family. Cousins Darcy, Rona, Shelly, Deanee, Reva, Lynne, Linda & Heather. This continued extensively throughout his life. GIANNOULIS - On Saturday, June 3, 2017, Elias Anastasios Giannoulis passed away after a long but courageous battle with depression at the age of 22. Elias was born on December 5, 1994, in Yorkton, SK. He was the youngest of three siblings. Elias was a natural athlete and excelled at every sport he played, including hockey, soccer and cross country. Elias was a defenceman in hockey and was selected by his coaches and teammates to be the captain of several of his teams. A quiet leader, Elias chose to lead by example rather than by words. Elias was the kind of player who would take the puck from one end of the ice to the other and instead of taking a shot on net, he would wait for another teammate to arrive and pass the puck to that teammate so that they could score a goal instead of him. He always had more assists than goals and it would be rare to see Elias ever put his stick in the air when he scored a goal. Elias took his defensive style from hockey and applied it to soccer. He would literally lie down on the field and block a soccer ball shot like he would a slapshot in hockey which always drew laughs from his teammates. One of Elias’ favourite activities was running cross country. He won too many races to count but he was humble about it and would wait at the finish line to congratulate his competitors. Elias had a good sense of humour as he ran one race in a pair of Crocs and another in a pair of jeans and skateboard shoes. Running was a passion of Elias’ so he decided to take it one step further and became a marathon runner. Elias ran several marathons and was a pro at them, just like everything else in life. Elias briefly attended the University of Saskatchewan but soon realized that university wasn’t for him. Being the caring person that he was, Elias decided that he wanted to make a difference in people’s lives so he enrolled in the Parkland College in Melville and successfully completed his diploma and become a Primary Care Paramedic. Elias did his practicum at WPD Ambulance in North Battleford and lived with Alex and Brooke while commuting the thirty minutes from Wilkie to North Battleford. Like everywhere else Elias went, he was loved and admired by his coworkers so it was no surprise when Elias was offered a job at WPD Ambulance and moved to North Battleford. Elias started as a casual employee but his hard work and love for others landed him a full time job which he was very proud of. Elias recently moved in with his girlfriend, Dellyn, whom he loved dearly. They recently went to New York on a holiday and Elias loved it, but he said he wouldn’t go back because it was a little too big of a city for him! Elias instantly fell in love with Dellyn’s dog, Asher, who was a calming influence for him and provided a great level of therapy. Elias loved sending pictures of him and Asher hanging out in the backyard to his family members and friends, even posting a few on Facebook. Elias was the biggest fan of Trailer Park Boys, and he could literally say every line from every episode word for word. Elias had an electronic drum set that he loved to play on. Alex was overjoyed that Elias moved close to him, and took every available opportunity to drive to North Battleford to visit him, often going to Tim Horton’s and Boston Pizza. Elias loved giving hugs, and would always tell Alex to hug properly every time he left from visiting! Elias struggled with depression for much of his life and he went to several calls as a paramedic that affected him. Elias was open with his family about his illness and sought help from others. Depression did not define who Elias was as a person and he tried his best to deal with the pain that most people could not see he was in. Elias was predeceased by his grandfathers, Stavros Giannoulis and Frank Biro, his grandmother, Doreen Mattison and his Golden Retriever friend, Jake. Elias will be lovingly remembered by his father, Peter Giannoulis; his mother, Darla Giannoulis and her fiancé, Greg Ulmer; his brothers, Zachary and Alexandros (Brooke) Giannoulis; his girlfriend, Dellyn Winterhalt; his four-legged friend, Asher; his grandmothers, Kalliopi Giannoulis and Margaret Biro; his uncles, Lambros Yannoulis and Tracey Biro; his aunties, Della Yannoulis and Darlene Biro Pedersen; and his cousins, Kelly, Steven, Michael, Jamie, Stavros, Poppy, Nathan and Caleb, as well as several cousins and family members. The Hull family was a second family to Elias, and he will be lovingly remembered by Carey, Cara, Jacey and Bretten Hull, and Russel “Papa” Holth. Elias’ teammates, friends and coworkers will miss him dearly. Funeral Services were held on Wednesday, June 7, 2017 from St. Anargyroi Greek Orthodox Church in Yorkton, SK with Father Spyridon Vandoros and Father Rodion Luciuk officiating. A Celebration of Elias’ Life was held on Thursday, June 8, 2017 from the Gallagher Centre in Yorkton with Kathy Novak officiating. Words of tribute and eulogy were shared by his brothers, Alexandros and Zachary, his girlfriend, Dellyn and by many of his teachers, coaches and friends. Special music was shared by Jackie Guy, Scott Hoffort, Savannah Guy and Kristen Jonassen who sang, “Why?”, “Go Rest High on That Mountain” and “Till I See You Again”. A Guard of Honour was made up of friends from WPD Ambulance in North Battleford as well as other First Responders. The Interment Service followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery officiated by Father Spyridon Vandoros and Father Rodion Luciuk. The pall bearers were Elias’ brothers, Zachary Giannoulis and Alexandros Giannoulis, his cousins, Nathan Biro and Caleb Biro, and his friends Bretten Hull, Lyndon Shea and Spencer Tetreault. Friends so wishing may make a donation in Elias’ memory to Wounded Warriors Canada which provides mental health programs and services to first responders and their families. The family would like to thank the Risling, Flett and WPD Ambulance families for their much needed support. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

Sept. 11, 1991 - June 12, 2009. In our hearts your memory lingers, always tender fond and true. Because there’s not a day Dear Alex, that we don’t think of you! -Ever remembered, loved and missed by your family.

Recently we had the good fortune of experiencing the assistance and kindness of another human being. Please do not let our delay in expressing our gratitude deter from our intended sincere appreciation. Our television news is often discouraging and it can be difficult to see beyond our very troubled world at times. Yet, there remains good people who do go above and beyond and don’t expect anything in return. With that in mind, we wish to express our gratitude and thanks to a Yorkton Postal Carrier who did just that for us. -”Rick” and Chris Dubois Yorkton, SK

The family of the late Ernie Wolkowski would like to thank the following: Fr. Games have become much too large In 1988, NEC of Japan released the CD-ROM² System, an add-on for their PC Engine console. While most games at the time were based on the cartridge format, the CD offered new frontiers of storage. You could fit hundreds of megabytes on a CD! For reference, at the time, in North America, you could fit the entire library of the most popular game console, the NES, on one CD. How would we ever fill this storage format?

It is full already, and I have only owned that system since December. I don’t even own that many games for it, the games themselves have just become a bit overweight. Uncharted 4, for example, tips the scales at over 60 GB once you include all of the patches, Final Fantasy XV does the

same. The size of one game is the same as the size of an entire, healthysized hard drive made in the early 2000s. The issue is that there really isn’t any incentive for people to keep the size of their products down. Back in the day, it was expensive to make a game bigger. You would have to order a larger, more expensive cartridge, you would have to spread it over more CDs or DVDs. Now, we’re in the age of digital distribution, and games have bloated. Evidently the costs associated with pushing a game out over download are not significant, because it’s not uncommon to sail merrily over the 50 GB barrier. For the consumer, it’s a pain to have to shuffle games around every time you want to try a new one, as giant file sizes make it

Flash forward to today, where a Playstation 4 has taken up residence underneath my own television. It came equipped with a 500 GB hard drive, which is enough to store every game ever released for that CD-ROM² System, and then some.
