DENISCHUK - At the age of 92 years, Elsie Denischuk of Yorkton, beloved wife of the late Fred Denischuk, passed away on July 30, 2017 at the Yorkton & District Nursing Home. Elsie was born April 1, 1925 on the family farm, northwest of Rhein, SK, to Mike and Ann (nee Markewich) Uhryn. She was the youngest of nine children, four brothers John, Ivan, Mike, Emil and four sisters Katie, Lena, Mary and Lillian. Elsie attended Federhill School where her formal education ended at grade eight. However, her knowledge and wisdom grew throughout her life. She would always remember everyone’s birthdays, ages, all the Ukrainian holidays, feast days and celebrations. Mom enjoyed music. She was a gifted and self-taught guitar player. In 1948 Elsie caught the attention of a young man from Elfros, SK at the Yorkton Church Vidpust Pilgrimage. A year later, on July 24, 1949, they were married at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church. They started farming on a quarter-section of land next to the York Lake golf course. Here they raised their three children: Gene, Denis and Darlene. Food was always the first thing on her mind. Dinner was at noon and supper was at 6 o’clock every evening. She was a skilled and resourceful homemaker and could prepare a full course meal out of any ingredients. Her meals were legendary. She loved to entertain guests, Christmas Eve Supper was sacred to her, as was the assembling of the Easter Basket. She loved to prepare and serve holiday meals and her greatest pleasure was to have her family home for these celebrations. There was always laughter, jokes and lots of card games when everyone got together, which was often. She was an active gardener and always kept up a large garden with many flowers. She enjoyed nature by picking wild mushrooms and all types of berries. During the 1950’s and 60’s she entered a large variety of canned fruit, meats, pastries, breads, cakes, cookies and pies in the Yorkton Exhibition & Summer Fair winning many ribbons and cash prizes over the years. She also baked and decorated wedding and anniversary cakes for the nephew, nieces, neighbours and friends. These works of art appeared at most of the family gatherings and as kids we had some special birthday cakes. In 1968 the York Lake Golf Course talked Mom into taking over the concession at the Clubhouse and looking after what she called “her golfers” until 1975. She was active with the UCWL. She loved to assist at the various church and hall functions. Elsie enjoyed working as a cook for various functions in the new hall. The new kitchen was a challenge for Mom as there is no cook-book for preparing food for 600 people or soup for 300 as everything was done to taste, getting up at 5:00 am to get six turkeys ready for supper, plus all the fixings. For years she made Borscht for the funeral lunches. In 1986 Mom and Dad bought a house in Yorkton and enjoyed the comforts of city life. They enjoyed many happy hours socializing, caroling, playing cards, dancing and having coffee with family, friends and neighbours. Fred and Elsie were very active and attended many gatherings and special family celebrations. They loved to travel throughout Canada, United States and Mexico. Life is a gamble and Elsie loved to gamble. When the first Casino opened her and Fred would spend their free time socializing, visiting with friends and people they had not seen for years and playing the machines - in that order. In 2009 they celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary. Elsie was predeceased by her husband Fred in 2012. She is survived by her son Gene and Betty, Denis and Maria, Darlene and her husband Joe Coulic. She also has two grandsons and two granddaughters and one great-granddaughter. Elsie’s family would like to express their gratitude to the staff and residents of Gladstone Seniors Residence in Yorkton for providing Mom a warm and friendly environment over the years, the staff of Yorkton Regional Health Centre and the Melody Manor for the kind and compassionate care of Elsie in her final days. Elsie lived a good life and at age ninety-two, she knew that when the food started losing its flavour and stopped being tasty, it was time to rest. We will not forget her sauerkraut perogies, head cheese, pickles, donuts and buns! She will be dearly missed and forever remembered. We love you Mom/Baba! Prayers were held on Monday, August 7, 2017 at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Yorkton with Rev. Fathers Bohdan Lukie and Methodius Kushko, C.Ss.R. officiating. The Holy Rosary led by members of U.C.W.L.C. preceded the prayers. The Funeral Liturgy was held on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church with Very Rev. Father Bohdan Lukie, C.Ss.R. as the Celebrant. The responses were led by Bernadette Gabora and Victor Puchala assisted by choir members. The cross bearer was Ron Denischuk and the epistle reader was Denis Denischuk. The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Ernest Uhryn, Greg Jelinski, Ted Deneschuk, Walter Denischuk, Elsie Hayes and Norman Parada serving as the casket bearers. Memorials honouring Elsie’s life may be made to St. Mary’s Church as gifts of remembrance. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.baileysfuneralhome.com.

TORRIE - It is with deep sadness that the family of Ronald “Ron” John Torrie announce his passing on Thursday, August 3, 2017. He was 67 years of age. Ron was born on October 14, 1949 in Yorkton, SK, the eldest son of William and Alma Torrie. Ron spent his early years on the family farm and went to Grahame and Saltcoats Schools. Later, attending university in Saskatoon and Calgary, he earned his Bachelor of Education degree. While in Calgary, he met Delores Laughlin and they were married on July 3, 1971. They raised three children; Dana, Vaughan and Rae. Ron enjoyed his work life. His early days on the farm inspired him to pursue this way of life after his time in Calgary. The winters provided the opportunity for Ron to begin a work life outside of farming at Parker Quine, an accounting firm in Yorkton. After farming, Ron worked at PennTruss Mfg. while continuing his accounting work. Recently, Parker Quine became Collins Barrow where Ron worked up until his death, serving more than 40 years with the same company and forging many longlasting relationships along the way. Work was a big part of Ron’s life but the most enjoyment came from family. Ron and Delores raised their three children in Saltcoats, SK and were involved in and supportive of all their activities; academic, sports, or otherwise. Hockey arenas, baseball fields, band concerts and school events were just some of the venues where Ron could be found throughout the years. More recently, spending time with seven wonderful grandchildren became a favourite pastime for Ron. The energetic nature of the grandchildren kept Ron young at heart and created many lasting memories which are sure to be cherished. Ron loved conversation and enjoyed learning of the little details of the lives of his family members and coworkers. His quick wit provided much laughter in his ability to find humour in most ordinary everyday situations. He had a special connection with nature and found a great deal of pleasure from identifying and researching different bird, animal and plant species. With his coveralls and gloves never far from sight, Ron was not afraid of work. Jobs around the yard and house or helping family out with any project, large or small, was part of his routine. Simple pleasures such as stopping for ice cream or spending a day at the beach were highlights for Ron as long as he was spending time with those he loved. Ron was predeceased by his parents, William and Alma (Dietrich) Torrie. He will be loved and remembered by his wife of 46 years, Delores; daughter, Dana (Mark) Kostelnyk and their children (Tristan, Isabella and Mykhaela) of Saltcoats, SK; son, Vaughan (Amber) and their children (Emery and Wren) of Calgary, AB; son, Rae (Kristin) and their children (Tyson and Gabrielle) of Regina, SK; brother, Randy (Bev) and sister, Joanne (Patrick) Gilbertson and their children (Alexis, Daniel and Morgan) as well as numerous other relatives and close friends. A Celebration of Ron’s Life was held on Thursday, August 10, 2017 at the Saltcoats Community Hall in Saltcoats, SK with Fred Nicholson officiating. The organist, Ruth Datema, led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, “How Great Thou Art” and “Would You Bless Our Homes and Families”. Words of eulogy and tribute were shared by Ron’s daughter, Dana Kostelnyk, his friend, Arlan Maddaford and his sister, Joanne Gilbertson. Special music was provided by Linda Datema, Teresa Laycock and Carla Laycock who shared two selections, “Hallelujah” and “Jealous of the Angels”. The piper, Ferne Katzberg, led the family out of the service. The cremation committal followed in the Saltcoats Town Cemetery with Tristan, Isabella and Mykhaela Kostelnyk, Emery and Wren Torrie and Tyson and Gabrielle Torrie serving as the urn bearers. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

SARANTOPOULOS - Peter was born on September 11, 1942 in a small town in Southern Greece called Pilos to George and Helen (nee Sumas) Sarantopoulos. Peter has three brothers and one sister. From an early age Peter showed signs of being adventurous. Peter enjoyed visiting different places, seeing new things and meeting new people. Peter was a kind, caring and generous man with a very big heart. He had the personality that seemed to make a person be near him. After Peter completed his mandatory service in the Greek Army he emigrated to Canada in 1968. Upon arrival in Canada, Peter was fascinated by the beauty and diversity of Canada. He spent time in his younger years working in the Yukon, Winnipeg and Saskatchewan in the mining camps. Then he moved to British Columbia, got married and owned a restaurant in White Rock close to the ocean. His most memorable and happy time during this period of his life was when his beloved parents came to visit. It was the first time they had been outside of Greece. After his marriage ended, he moved to Saskatchewan. It was in 1991 that he met the love of his life, Patricia Osborne while he was working for the Lobster Trap Restaurant in Yorkton. Peter and Patricia hit it off quite well and were described as “two kids in a candy store”. They were united in matrimony in Saskatoon on October 25, 1992. Peter was very happy to be able to take Pat to Greece on vacation for an entire month. They toured the Parthenon, attended soccer games, which Peter loved to watch, showed Pat where he grew up and introduced her to all of his family in Greece. Peter lived, worked and owned restaurants in numerous locations in Canada; Wilkie, Grenfell, Churchbridge, Kamsack and others. It was through these places that Peter made many life-long friends along the way. However, Churchbridge was the one place that Peter and Pat truly felt at home. The friendships they made while living there were very memorable for Peter. Peter is predeceased by his parents, George and Helen; his beloved wife, Patricia; one brother, Kosta; one sister-in-law, Irene; his stepson, Brent and one step-grandson, Jordan. Peter leaves to celebrate his life his brothers, Gregory and Leo (Sara); sister, Maria (Nick) Saratsiotis; his sister-in-law, Voula; his step-daughter, Brenda and countless nieces, nephews and friends. At Your Service

They say that memories are golden, Well maybe that is true, But we never wanted memories, We only wanted you.

Our lips cannot speak how we loved you, Our hearts cannot tell what to say, But God only knows how we miss you, In our home that is lonely today.

PLAN OF THE WEEK

PLAN NUMBER 1-3673 IDEAL FOR A GROWING FAMILY The plans for this attractive three-bedroom home include an unfinished basement, ideal for a growing family seeking more bedrooms or for use as a mortgage-helping secondary suite. The covered entry, always welcome in inclement weather, leads directly into a foyer with an 11-foot ceiling. A coat closet is located to the left, and ahead is the stairway to the basement, protected by a railing. The great room also

boasts a lofty 11-foot ceiling, giving the room an airy feeling. Double windows look out to a covered deck, and a gas fireplace will cast its warmth into the openplan kitchen and dining room. The dining room, with a nine-foot ceiling like the other rooms in the home, has a bayed-out built-in buffet, always handy for serving and storage. A doorway opens to the covered portion of the deck, an ideal spot for yeararound grilling. Double windows look out to the sunny part of the deck. The kitchen features a prep island with a

double sink and space for the dishwasher. The cook will appreciate the generous counter space on two sides of the room, as well as the walkthrough pantry. The pantry leads into the laundry room, with two closets for cleaning tools and outerwear, as well as a shelf for sorting and folding. A doorway to the double garage allows the laundry room to double as a mud room. The master suite, located at the back of the home for privacy, includes a large en-suite with an oval soaker tub, as well as a shower stall. Double basins will ease the morning rush-hour.

Shelves for towels and other items are located against one wall of the shower stall. The second bedroom overlooks the front garden, and includes an extra-deep window sill. Bedrooms No. 2 and No. 3 share a three-piece bathroom. A linen closet is located between the secondary bedrooms. Ceilings are nine feet high, unless otherwise stated. Exterior finishes include wood siding and shingles, as well as painted trim. Brick accents lend interest. This home measures 50 feet wide and 64 feet deep, for a total of 1,918 feet of living space, excluding the unfinished basement. Plans for design 1-3673 are available for $775 (set of 5), $835 (set of 8) and $883 for a super set of 10. B.C. residents add 7% Prov. Sales Tax. Also add $35.00 for Priority courier charges within B.C. or $65.00 outside of B.C. Please add 5% G.S.T. or 13% H.S.T. (where applicable) to both the plan price and postage charges. Our NEW 49TH Edition of the Home Plan Catalogue containing over 400 plans is available for $15.50 (includes taxes, postage and handling). We only have one Earth DAVID SUZUKI

Science Matters

August 2 was Earth Overshoot Day. Unlike Earth Day or Canada Day, it’s not a time to celebrate. As the Earth Overshoot Day website explains, it marks the time when “we will have used more from nature than our planet can renew in the whole year.” That is the definition of unsustainable and means we’re using up the biological capital that should be our children’s legacy. We would require 1.7 Earths to meet our current annual demands sustainably. It doesn’t have to be this way. “Our planet is finite, but human possibilities are not. Living within the means of one planet is technologically possible, financially beneficial, and our only chance for a prosperous future,” says Mathis Wackernagel, CEO of the Global Footprint Network, an international research organization that uses UN statistics and other sources to calculate when overshoot day falls every year. This year marks the earliest overshoot date yet. (Wackernagel was a student of University of British Columbia ecologist William Rees. They popularized the footprint concept in their 1996 book, Our Ecological Footprint. Andrew Simms of the U.K.’s New Economics Foundation conceived Earth Overshoot Day, partnering with the Global Footprint Network in 2006 on the first campaign, and with conservation organization WWF starting in 2007.) According to the website, overfishing, overharvesting forests and emitting more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than natural sinks like forests can sequester are among the ways we overshoot Earth’s capacity. The consequences are serious. “Impacts of ecological overspending are apparent already in soil erosion, desertification, reduced cropland productivity, overgrazing, deforestation, rapid species extinction, fisheries collapse and increased carbon concentration in the atmosphere,” it notes. “Natural capital constraints also pose a threat to economic performance and economic stability.” Climate change is the most serious result. The Global Footprint Network says our carbon footprint makes up 60 per cent of our total ecological footprint, and it’s increasing rapidly. Basing its calculations on “the land area required to sequester carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel burning and cement production”, the network says our carbon footprint has more than doubled since 1970. The network also offers a mobile-friendly personal footprint calculator. Be warned: If you live in North America, your footprint will likely be much higher than 1.7 Earths, no matter how ecologically aware you consider yourself. We use far more energy and other resources than people in many parts of the world. The site includes a range of solutions in four areas: food, cities, population and energy. In North America, reducing the carbon footprint by using less energy — especially fossil fuels — is major, but so is changing food habits. Food demand makes up 26 per cent of the global footprint. Because raising animals for food requires far more resources and creates more emissions than growing plants, reducing the amount of meat and animal products we eat decreases our footprint. According to Oregon State University researchers, if Americans ate beans instead of beef, the U.S. could meet its 2020 greenhouse gas emissions goals, even if the country did little else and if people continued to eat other animal products. Food waste is another major problem. One-third of the food produced worldwide is wasted or lost — as much as 40 per cent in the U.S. Population is an obvious concern. More people require more space and resources. Strategies to stabilize population growth also have social benefits. “Educating girls and providing access to safe, affordable, and effective family planning” and “empowering women” are essential to reducing population growth and result in better economic development and health outcomes. Demanding constant economic growth on a finite planet with limited ability to renew resources is a recipe for overshoot. We can and must do more to reduce our growing impact on the only home we have.
