BEZBOROTKO - Jeanette Rae (nee Olson) Bezborotko of Theodore, Sk passed away suddenly on Tuesday, April 11, 2017. She had just celebrated her 70th birthday. Jeanette “Rae” Olson was born on February 11, 1947 at the Red Cross Hospital in Beardmore, ON. She was the third child born to Magnus Emil and Elsie “Viola” (nee Johnson) Olson. She spent her youth in Gimli, MB, later attending high school in Manitouwadge, ON. Rae was pursuing her passion for hairdressing before her family moved to British Columbia and she was forced to leave her dream behind. After various moves across the country, from Ontario to British Columbia, Rae settled down in Insinger, SK, single handedly raising her four girls, Beverly, Donna, Shirley and Frances. Rae and Elmer’s long life together began when she decided to stay in Saskatchewan, not returning home to British Columbia. Three years later, on July 6, 1974, Rae and Elmer happily married at the Theodore United Church, surrounded by family and friends. From that day forward the two were inseparable, as they celebrated 43 years of love and devotion to one another, cherishing every moment. Rae was a loving, devoted wife, and a mother of four girls. Her greatest pride in life was being a farmer’s wife, loving every moment. She had an endless love of nature, always evident in her bountiful garden, flourishing flower beds and abundance of house plants. She happily raised farm animals, including chickens, cattle, horses and even rabbits. Her list of hobbies was varied, she happily accepted the challenge of learning to crochet, sewing, woodworking, lapidary, beadwork and embroidery and was always ready to learn and master a new skill. Rae’s greatest passion in life was geneology. She embraced all the new and current technologies, from microfilm to computer programs. Binder after binder, she recorded seven generations, discovering and documenting it all. Through genealogy she also discovered that she was a descendant of the United Empire Loyalists! After the farm was sold in 1993, Elmer and Rae moved to Theodore, SK. Rae sold Avon to friends and neighbors, she worked for Diana May Clay decaling Ukrainian Ceramics. She became interested in Theodore recreational events, cheering on the local hockey team, attending fall suppers, spring teas and going to coffee row. Although she faced some health issues, she was never one to linger on it. Over the years she rose and faced the challenges of adversity and refused to let it define her. Rae was predeceased by her parents, Emil and Viola Olson; her siblings, Leigh Olson, Carol Vieau, Donna (in infancy), Nick and Dora Bezborotko, Mike and Elsie Byski, Allan Bezborotko, Rose Bezborotko; brother-in-law, Ed Magson and great-grandson, Jared Bellegarde. Rae leaves to mourn her passing and cherish her memory, her beloved husband of 43 years, Elmer Bezborotko; her four daughters, Beverley Hubelit of Melville, SK, Donna and Alvin Allary of Regina, SK, Shirley and George James of Surrey, BC and Frances and Robert Bernhardt of Melville, SK. Baba will be missed by her grandchildren, Bruce and Paula Hamilton, Skyla Cary, Kelly Hamilton, Laura Hamilton and Bobby Pollen, Raechelle Allary and Francis Bellegarde, Tleesha Allary and Devon Schick, Thomas James, Jeremy Bernhardt and Angela Goulet and Zarysa Bernhardt and her great-grandchildren, Adriana Cain-James and Simon Hamilton-Pollen. Rae is also survived by her sister, Joyce Magson of Fort Macleod, AB; sister-in-law, Shelia Olson of Grand Prairie, AB; son-in-law, Richard Hamilton of Hubbard, SK and uncle, Harry Hluchman of Thunder Bay, ON as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends. Funeral Services were held on Friday, July 14, 2017 from the Chapel of Christie’s Funeral Home in Yorkton, SK with Shelly Morris officiating. Rae’s daughter, Frances Bernhardt shared words of tribute and eulogy. The organist, Judy Berg, played the processional music, “In the Garden” and recessional music, “This Little Light of Mine” and also led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, “Amazing Grace” and “Rock of Ages”. The urn bearers were Rae’s husband, Elmer Bezborotko and grandson, Bruce Hamilton. A private family cremation committal will follow at a later date. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

BARR - Anna May Barr was born March 8, 1927 to Henry and Elsie Hagel of the Hilltop area. She went to school at Hilltop School and then later went into Yorkton to further her education. June 2, 1950 Anna married Bert Barr and moved to the Aston School district. In 1953 they built a new home of their own. They lived on this farm for the next 44 years. Anna never did get her driver’s licence so she was fortunate to have the neighbour ladies who had some of the same interests to take her for bingos, teas and ladies’ meetings (Aston Busy Circle). As she raised her family, Anna also enjoyed curling, dancing, playing cards (whist and canasta) with neighbours and friends. She was also involved with the children’s 4-H achievement days by getting food, dishes and clothes ready for the day. In 1997, Bert and Anna moved into Yorkton. After retiring, Anna and Bert enjoyed their bus trips to different casinos and spent many summers camping and fishing. When Bert passed away in 2004, Anna moved to Queen Elizabeth Court and lived there for eight years. She spent her remaining years at St. Paul Lutheran Home in Melville. PICKUP - Sharon Joyce Pickup, beloved wife of Kevin Pickup of Yorkton, passed away Friday, July 7, 2017 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. She was 54 years of age. Sharon was born April 18, 1963 in Nokomis, SK, the 5th of 6 children born to Karl and Gladys Riess. She graduated with her High School Diploma from the Nokomis School and moved on to Regina to work at the Army and Navy Department Store. In 1982 it was discovered that she had a brain tumor. Thankfully the tumor was benign. She went on to have numerous surgeries thereafter, but that never deterred her from enjoying life and raising her family. July 20, 1985 Sharon met the man of her dreams at a friend’s wedding. Kevin and Sharon were engaged on February 14, 1986 and happily married on March 28, 1987. They settled in Yorkton and started their family. They were blessed with 4 children. Sharon loved people. She was blessed with a kind heart and a sense of humour and as such enjoyed her career working as a Special Care Aide with the Sunrise Health Region. When her health declined and she was no longer able to continue working she enjoyed being a part of her community in other ways. She volunteered at the Lions Day Wellness, was an active member of her church community, the Acquired Brain Injury Group and the Saskatchewan Brain Injury Association. Sharon loved to “knit the world together” and was known to make connections between people in some way or another. She made friends easily with her humor and wit and her quick-witted sayings will be missed by so many. Sharon was predeceased by her parents Karl and Gladys Riess. She is survived by her loving husband Kevin; son Cameron (Jessica) of Saskatoon; daughters: Hillary (Michael) of Saskatoon; Gillian (Nathan) of Yorkton; and April of Yorkton; seven grandchildren: Joshua, Natalie, Jaxson, Kyron, Lucian, Astrid and Griffin. Siblings: Linda & Ron Stephan of Lanigan; Sheila Riess of Canora; Hector Riess & Ruth Derow of Rokeby; Robert & Debbie Riess of Yorkton; Lyle & Allie Riess of Drayton Valley, AB. Her mother and father-in-law: John & Myrna Pickup of Broadview SK; her sisters-in-law: Brenda & Wesley Parker of Broadview; Linda Pickup & Bob Pynten of Kamloops, BC; Sheila & Wayne Westcott of Regina, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral service was held on Friday, July 14, 2017 from Westview United Church in Yorkton with Rev. Deborah Smith officiating. The eulogists were Hector Riess and Brenda Parker. Organist, Laurene Jemieff led members of the Church Choir and the congregation in the singing of the hymns ‘Come In, Come In and Sit Down’, ‘Jesus Loves Me’, ‘In the Bulb There Is A Flower’ and ‘I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry’. The interment took place in the Garden of Memories at the Yorkton Memorial Gardens with son Cameron and grandson Jaxson serving as the urn bearers. Condolences can be left at baileysfuneralhome.com. Memorials were to the Saskatchewan Brain Injury Association, c/o Yorkton Chapter SBIA at 92 Logan Cres. W., Yorkton, SK S3N 0W5 .

PLAN OF THE WEEK

For Sale - Misc

STATEMENT OF OWNERSHIP

PLAN NUMBER 2-3768 DRAMATIC ROOF LINE This handsome threebedroom-plus-den home features a dramatic roofline, as well as brick and wood accents on the facade. The unfinished basement is designed to house a two-bedroom suite with its own entrance, as well as a theatre room for family entertainment. Entry is through a covered porch set off by brick

pillars and into a foyer with a lofty double-height ceiling. The coat closet is on the right, the den is on the left and the stairway to the upper-floor living area is ahead. Upstairs, the living room features a gas fireplace and an 11-foot ceiling. Between the fireplace and the stair-well, a railed-off area offers a view to the foyer below. A doorway opens to a sundeck that overlooks the front garden. Outside, to shade the great-room

window, is an overhang supported by wooden brackets. The dining room, with a nine-foot ceiling, features three windows overlooking the side garden. Separated from the dining area by a prep island, the kitchen boasts an L-shaped counter configuration and a corner pantry, as well as a doorway to a covered patio overlooking the back garden. Natural light will flood in through the windows over the double sink.

The master bedroom, at the back of the home, features five windows for plenty of daytime illumination. The en-suite bath includes a soaker tub, as well as a shower stall and double basins. A walk-in closet completes the layout. The second bedroom features a built-in desk, and bedroom no. 3 boasts its own walk-in closet. On the ground floor, adjacent to the den, the laundry room includes a handy shelf. The double garage includes separate entries for two vehicles. Exterior finishes include stucco with wood and brick accents. This home measures 44 feet wide and 58 feet, 10 inches deep, for a total of 1,654 square feet. Plans for design 2-3768 are available for $775 (set of 5), $835 (set of 8) and $883 for a super set of 10. B.C. residents add 7% Prov. Sales Tax. Also add $35.00 for Priority courier charges within B.C. or $65.00 outside of B.C. Please add 5% G.S.T. or 13% H.S.T. (where applicable) to both the plan price and postage charges. I don’t have enough space to provide a complete timeline of the Khadr matter, but the guy spent precious little time in Canada even though he was born here. My son was born in Brandon, but moved to Yorkton within two weeks. If he goes on to do something famous, is he recognized by Brandon or Yorkton? That’s Omar Khadr. He was born here, but never lived here to any point that he would recall it. When Omar was 15, he was already in the company of Osama Bin Laden. The two broke bread together (figure of speech). Khadr, who was badly injured in the firefight where the American medic was killed, expressed happiness when learning he had killed an American and signed a statement of facts confessing as such. Khadr later claimed that confession was made as a result of torture, but a judge ruled the confession came after investigators provided video Career Opportunities

evidence to Khadr of him building IEDs (bombs). Khadr would go on to spend ten years at Guantanamo and Canada was under pressure by the American government to take him back and have his time served here, something the Stephen Harper government wanted no part of. By 2012, he was repatriated back to Canada and then released from custody in 2015 altogether. Meanwhile, back in 2010, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that the federal government infringed on Khadr’s rights when it sent its own interrogators (this was back when Chretien/ Martin ran the country) to question Khadr after the poor lad was deprived of sleep (not allowed to snooze for more than 3 hours at a time). He also did not have a lawyer present. At first, Khadr sought $100,000. He, later, raised the amount to $20 million and the Supreme Court ruled financial compensation, “left to government to decide how best to respond, but the Court also noted the original remedy sought by Khadr was his return to Canada; which was granted. Khadr supporters hang their hat on two things: him being a child soldier and his confession was gleaned through torture. Mainstream media has even just accepted the term child soldier for Khadr, yet you see legal matters all the time where a 15 year-old who commits murder is

tried as an adult. It’s not like he was 6. Khadr even persuaded his father to let him fight. The intent when he threw the grenade really can’t be disputed. Al Qaeda doesn’t even meet the standard of a legal army, so Khadr is an unlawful combatant (terrorist) by legal jargon. His claims of torture are also not necessarily fact. One court ruled he was treated ‘humanely’. Be careful before you label these court decisions as a joke (if you support Khadr) because it’s a court’s decision that you are so quick to agree with when it comes to accepting this gross payout to him. Also, former Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff called Khadr’s treatment to be ‘an acceptable form of duress’. The only court to ever rule on torture, determined there was ‘no credible evidence the accused (Khadr) was ever tortured...even using a liberal interpretation considering the accused’s age’. In another instance where Khadr claimed to have been tortured, there was video tape evidence that supported the contrary and the court said, ‘he was not abused or mistreated in any way by any of the guards’. So, why pay him? Clearly, our very liberal justice system felt Khadr’s rights were violated (but our legal system has also allowed a cannibal to change his name and walk free and, most recently, allowed a mother who killed her six kids to do just eight years of hard time). It was Justin Trudeau’s government’s call to decide how much dough to give this terrorist. The Supreme Court even said so. Trudeau decided $10.5 million. And, for that he’s either nuts or a supporter of terror. Either way, he should pay when we go to vote in 2019. Don’t get me wrong. I believe in ensuring a Canadian’s rights are never breached. But, there has to be balance between compensation for when breaches are made and allowing someone to profit from crime. Fast fact - you may have seen the story of the Canadian man who took his pregnant wife back packing through Afghanistan, only to be kidnapped and now he and his wife are raising their family as captors of al Qaeda. Well, that guy was once married to Omar Khadr’s sister. That sister is in jail in Turkey for terror related accusations. Omar, when asked in 2015 about violent jihad says, “It’s not something I believe in right now. Like, as in he may believe in it at some point down the road? And, we just paid him $10.5 million for potential recruiting efforts? I’ve never been more ashamed to say I’m Canadian. Auctions
