SIMES - Sonia Zenovia Hrynkiw was born in Canora, SK on Dec. 1, 1934 to two Ukrainian pioneers, Helen Yaholnitsky and Metro Hrynkiw. Sonia and her sister Hope moved to Yorkton after the family finished farming in Arran and attended high school there with great success. Spirited and determined, Sonia set her sights on higher education at University of Regina in an era when fewer women did so. She graduated as a Registered Laboratory Technologist, interned at Saskatoon Hospital in 1956, and worked in Canora, Wadena, Dauphin and the provincial lab in The Pas, MB. She was active in her union and culminated her 35 year career by delivering the Commencement Address to new technologist graduates in 1992 as Honourary President MSMLT. While working in Canora she met lifelong friends including the love of her life, Jim Simes from Sturgis, her best friend of sixty years. Those were the fun times of footloose and fancy free; baseball, bonspieling and attending dances at Crystal Lake, her favourite place in the world. They were engaged at Crystal Lake and married here at St. Gerard’s Roman Catholic Church. Together they had two children; Pat and Dave. We camped and traveled north, east and west in Canada. Mom was busy with sewing, curling, golf and Toastmasters and volunteered in minor hockey, Kinettes & K40’s. In later years she advocated for cancer patients in support groups. Adventurers, Sonia & Jim traveled to Barbados and Cuba before finding their winter getaway of 30 years, Los Picos in Bucerias. A legendary cook and baker, Sonia loved to entertain and passed many an evening there and at their cabin at Crystal Lake with friends and family. Many of our fondest memories are from around the table, drinking Jim’s home-made wine, eating Sonia’s overnight buns and swapping stories! In her final days, Sonia was surrounded by family and friends while under palliative care at Yorkton Regional Hospital. She fought lung cancer and breast cancer for 18 years, finally succumbing to pancreatic cancer March 1, 2017 at age 82. We thank the many medical professionals who cared for her throughout her long battles. She believed in our health care system. Predeceased by her parents Helen Zenovia (nee Yaholnitsky) & Metro Hrynkiw and her beloved Aunt Doris (nee Labiuk) & Uncle Bill Hrynkiw. Survived by her husband of 58 years, James Obert Simes; children David Michael Simes & wife Karen Driedger, Patricia Yvonne Simes Saumier & husband Steve Saumier; grand-daughter Mollie Jordan Saumier; sister Hope Emilia (nee Hrynkiw) & husband Jim Sytnick and their children Karen & partner BJ and Ken Sytnick. Sonia welcomed into her life; Steve’s children Ryan & wife Lisa and their children Zachary, Reece and Cole; Robin; Sarah Rose Snively & husband Brady and daughter Bryn. Rest in peace Sonia, you will be missed. The Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday, March 4, 2017 from St. Gerard’s Roman Catholic Church in Yorkton with Rev. Fr. Francis Hengen as Celebrant. The Lectors were Pat Simes Saumier and Floydey Wooley. The cross bearer was Linda Michaud, the gift bearers were Linda & Mitch Michaud. Pianist, Diana Hornung led members of the Parish Choir and the congregation in the hymns, ‘How Great Thou Art’, Psalm 23, ‘Peace Is Flowing Like A River’, ‘Hail Mary, Gentle Woman’, ‘Song of the Angels’ and ‘Amazing Grace’. The interment took place in the Garden of Memories at the Yorkton Memorial Gardens with daughter Pat as the urn bearer. Condolences can be left at baileysfuneralhome.com. Memorials were to the Canadian Cancer Society.

PLAN NUMBER 7-41003 BRICK AND WOOD ACCENTS The brick and wood accents on the exterior of this handsome oneand-one-half storey family home lend it a contemporary air that will make the structure a welcome addition to any neighbourhood. The covered entry leads into a foyer with a display case on the

left. Directly ahead is the great-room complex, with a den and the U-shaped stairway to the second-floor bedrooms to the right. Tucked behind the stairway are a coat closet and powder room. The great room, with an extra-high ceiling, includes a gas fireplace, as well as large windows that look out to a covered patio at the back of the home. Part of the ceil-

ing in the dining area, which enjoys access to the patio, is extra-high. The kitchen, separated from the dining area and great room by a prep island, includes a double-door pantry. The laundry room, which contains a coat closet, has access to the double garage, and will serve as a mud room. The master bedroom, featuring an extra-high ceiling, is located at the

back of the home for privacy. The en-suite, in a bayed-out area, includes double sinks and a soaker tub, as well as a separate shower stall. The walk-in closet is reached through the en-suite. Upstairs are the three secondary bedrooms, well-separated for noise-proofing. All share a three-piece bathroom and a linen closet. Bedrooms No. 3 and 4 feature a built-in book case. Exterior finishes include brick-faced pilasters, stucco with wood accents, painted trim and a decorative garage door. Will by-election put fight into the opposition? Things I do with words... Column

Devin Wilger In the recent Saskatoon-Meewasin byelection, the provincial NDP did something they have not been able to manage in a long time, they took a seat from the Saskatchewan Party. Ryan Meili is the freshly minted new MLA, after years of being in and around the provincial party for a few years, including a couple runs at the leadership, he now has a seat in the legislature. The more important part of his win is that he won at the expense of the Saskatchewan Party, who held the seat until the death of previous MLA, Roger Parent. Given years of middling performance by the official opposition, they had a rare victory. It is difficult to tell if this victory actually means anything. Like any by-election, the number of voters is very low, with only 41 per cent of voters actually casting a ballot. Everyone who stayed home was apparently a Saskatchewan Party supporter, given that they lost this time. The seat going NDP is not a huge surprise however, historically it has been orange, outside of a pair of P r o g r e s s i v e Conservatives in the 1980s and Parent in the past two elections. It does remain an NDP victory, however, and as elections are decided by who gets voters to show up, it’s clear that Meili can get people to the polls. It didn’t take long for leadership buzz to surround the Saskatoon physician, since he appears to be the first person in a long time to actually energize NDP supporters. I do hope that, at a minimum, it does put a bit of wind in the sails of the province’s opposition, because the province needs a stronger

opposition than it has. The lack of a strong opposition allows the sitting government to do very stupid things, such as musing about selling crown corporations.

Which is not backing the NDP as a potential new government, I just want a strong opposition, and I don’t particularly care who it winds up being. Without a strong opposition, governments start to believe their own hype and make poor decisions in the belief that they can do no wrong – or, more accurately, they can do nothing that will get them replaced after their term is up. A strong opposition, no matter who it is, exists to keep the actual government honest. Quite frankly, the NDP has not been doing its job for a couple terms, spending more time in the corner licking its wounds than it has actually being an opposition party. Their halfhearted and lazy campaign in Yorkton during the most recent provincial election would be an embarrassment for any party, let alone one that is supposed to be the official opposition. Their half-hearted campaign province-wide presented the Saskatchewan Party their latest mandate on a silver platter.

Whatever your political position, this province needs an opposition party, and the NDP has been so humbled by a couple of bad election showings that they dare not do their job. If Meili’s win puts a bit of fight back into them, that could be the exact thing the party needs. If it puts fear in the hearts of the provincial government, that also can’t hurt. The NDP needs to stop feeling sorry for itself, and Meili’s win might be the morale boost it desperately needs.
