CHEPIL - Mrs. Katherine Chepil of Yorkton, beloved wife of the late William T. Chepil, entered into eternal life on September 24, 2017 at the Yorkton District Nursing Home. She was 100 years of age. Katherine (nee Filipchuk) Chepil was born March 10, 1917 on the family farm in the Hamton district, the daughter of Partun Filipchuk and Martha Melnychuk. She attended Stawchen School and helped on the family farm. On November 3, 1938 she married William T. Chepil. They set up their own homestead where they farmed for many happy years. In 1943 they were blessed with a daughter Alice. Bill and Katherine retired to Yorkton in 1991. Katherine was predeceased by her parents, her husband Bill in 1994 and all of her brothers Bill, Ted, Alex, John, George, Sam and Mike and sisters Pauline Oucharek, Mary Emery, Martha Kolebaba, Nellie Fedryck, Anne Spence, Margaret Yaniw and Edith Funk. She is survived by her daughter Alice (Wilbert) Matechuk, grandchildren Laura (Rick) Dobko, Darren Matechuk and Shauna (Sieh) Matechuk Moore and many nieces and nephews. Katherine was a wonderful mother, grandmother, aunt, a friend and counselor to many. People would confide in her and she always showed that quiet, compassionate love and care. She was a favourite with the home care workers and the staff at the hospital and Jowsey House. As one nurse said, “She wasn’t here very long but managed to get into the hearts of all of us”. In earlier years Katherine enjoyed coming out to the farm especially during seeding and harvest. She would come over to Alice and Wilbert’s for special occasions, but there was no place like Baba’s for short visits and suppers. In 2014, Mom was a special guest at the family reunion to celebrate 100 years of farming in the Filipchuk family. Many memories were created and relationships cemented as family met for food and fun. Her faith made her strong and as she neared her 100th birthday still living in her own home. She leaned ever more on her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. A big party was held to celebrate the first ever centenarian in the Filipchuk family. Messages from near and far came flooding in. And as Mom had always been a royal watcher, she asked…”How did you get ahold of the queen?”. She lived by the word of God and her favourite scripture was from John 14:6 where Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father, but by me”. This was written on every card we ever received from her. This was Baba’s scripture. God and family were first and foremost in her life and she leaves a rich heritage of faith and love for all of us. She has been much loved and will be in our hearts always! The Funeral Service was held on Monday, October 2, 2017 at Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Rev. Tim Sheppard of the Family Worship Centre officiating. The organist, Amanda Buhler, accompanied in the singing of the hymns, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”, “Amazing Grace” and “Nothing But The Blood”. Alice Matechuk shared her mom’s life story. Grandchildren, Laura, Darren and Shauna shared their remembrances of Baba. A taped musical selection, ‘What a Beautiful Name’ was played as the processional and recessional music. All her nieces and nephews were considered as honourary pallbearers. The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Greg Gerlitz, Allan Filipchuk, Craig Filipchuk, Darren Matechuk, Doug Suknasky, Rick Dobko and Sieh Moore serving as the casket bearers. Memorials in honour of Katherine may be made to Mercy Ships Canada - #5 - 3318 Oak St., Victoria, BC, V8X 1R1. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.baileysfuneralhome.com.

Fred was known as a person willing to give a helping hand or as they say “Would give the shirt off his back”. He was a great volunteer and philanthropist in the community. In our eyes, he was a true ambassador for raising funds towards the Alzheimer’s Society; he believed that every dollar raised would be one step closer for awareness and cure, it was truly his heartfelt passion. He visited shut ins on a weekly basis and drove them to their appointments. Also, delivered the church bulletins faithfully every Sunday to nursing homes. Woodworking projects, various crafts, gardening and preserving were his favourite pastimes. Fred was an active member of St. Mary’s Church, St. Mary’s U.C.B., Royal Canadian Legion Branch #77, Yorkton Antique Car Club, Claybank historical (Brick Factory) Society and most recently, Yorkton Brick Mill Society. She eagerly accepted a Paris, Russia, Ukraine trip with a group of students and enjoyed an unforgettable train ride from Moscow to Kiev. Then her travels continued with friends to London, England, Holland, Germany, France, Italy, Austria and Switzerland. Mary’s most endeared hobby was cross-stitching; a hobby shared by her mother. During her leisure time she created many beautiful and interesting pieces of cross-stitch. Till God knew what was best, He took her home and gave her rest.
PARROTT - Mrs. Lorna Parrott, formerly of Yorkton, widow of Edwin Parrott, died in Ottawa, ON on August 20, 2017 at age 97 years. Lorna was born to Jim and Elizabeth (nee Adamson) Wilson on the family farm in the Beaver District, near Springside, SK on October 21, 1919. The Wilson farmhouse, which had been built by her father, overlooked a small lake, now known as Wilson Lake. It was in this house that Lorna was born during a snowstorm. The Wilson and Adamson extended family members had all settled in the same area and Lorna grew up with strong family ties. Her first school was Beaver School, a one-room school and she completed her Grade 12 in Springside, SK. She then entered the Registered Nurses training program at The Queen Victoria Hospital in Yorkton, SK, graduating with her R.N. in June 1941. Lorna married Edwin Parrott Dec. 31, 1941 and spent most of the war years in Regina, SK before returning to Yorkton with Ed when he was discharged from the army. While her children were young, Lorna worked occasionally as a Special Nurse for very ill patients. However, she became seriously ill herself with Encephalitis in 1953 and her recovery was slow. Eventually Lorna took a refresher course and returned to nursing in 1969 working until 1976 in the Yorkton General Hospital. From her graduation as a nurse until her early 90s, Lorna was frequently consulted by friends and family about their illnesses. Lorna was always ready to listen and encourage people to seek medical help. She nursed her husband Ed through a long and debilitating illness in his final years. She was always generous with her time and helped friends by driving them to appointments and on errands. Lorna was a long-time member of Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Yorkton and devoted more than 30 years of service to the ACW, holding the office of treasurer from 1987 to 2008. She was also active in the Pelly Deanery and was appointed Rector’s Warden in her own parish. She greatly enjoyed singing in the church choir, which she did for 30 years as well. Lorna was also a member of the Queen Victoria Nurses Alumnae Association until it became defunct after the nursing school was closed in 1969. Her other interests included family history, gardening, needlework and archaeology. After 60 years of residence in the family home at 261 Second Avenue in Yorkton, she donated some items to the Saskatchewan Archives. She moved to the Bentley in Yorkton, a retirement residence, for a few years before moving to Ottawa to be near her daughter, Cheryl. She made friends wherever she went and was soon settled in Crystal View Lodge in Ottawa and enjoying life there. A return of breast cancer cut her life short at almost 98 years of age. The Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Yorkton, SK with Rev. Deacon Luanne Hrywkiw officiating. Accompanists, Judy Berg and Joleen Cherland, led the choir in the singing of the hymns, “O Jesus I Have Promised”, “The Lord Is My Shepherd”, “Unto The Hills Around I Lift Up” and “Now Thank We All Our God”. The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Trevor and Wayne Wilson serving as the urn bearers. Memorials in honour of Lorna may be made to Holy Trinity Church or the Canadian Cancer Society. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.baileysfuneralhome.com.

PLAN NUMBER 7-41009 DESIGNED FOR OUTDOOR LIVING This attractive twostorey, four-bedroom home is designed for outdoor living, with two covered decks – the larger off the great room, and the smaller outside the master suite. As well, extra rooms are available in the form of a spacious study on the main floor and a loft area upstairs. The covered entry leads into a spacious foyer with a doubleheight ceiling. To the right is the stairway to the bedrooms, and ahead are two coat closets, one set at an angle. Beyond, past a study with double doors, are the great room and dining area. The great room features a gas fireplace, flanked by windows. More windows overlook the covered deck and the back garden. A large alcove in the back wall will accommodate a large-screen TV. The dining room flows into the great room, and also enjoys windows overlooking the covered deck. Between the dining area and the great room, french doors open onto the deck, which will be ideal for al fresco meals in the warmer months. The kitchen, adjacent to the dining area, is separated from it by a prep island and eating bar, which includes a double sink. The roomy pantry is accessible from both
the kitchen and the mud room, which includes a row of cubby holes and a bench. A three-piece powder room, with a broom closet near the doorway, is located near the study. Upstairs, the master suite features French doors that open onto a covered deck, a delightful spot for early morning coffee. The en-suite includes a soaker tub as well as a shower still with a seat. A linen closet is adjacent to the double basins. The toilet is separated from the rest of the en-suite. A commodious walk-in closet completes the lay-out. The second bedroom features its own walk-in closet and shares a bathroom with double sinks with the third bedroom. The fourth bedroom, adjacent to the loft area, is adjacent to a threepiece bathroom. A large linen closet is located near the laundry room. In the angle of the L-shaped stairway, the area that is open to the foyer below is protected by railings. Natural light will illuminate the landing area through a stepped window. Ceilings throughout the home measure nine feet high. Exterior finishes include stucco, with wood siding and brick accents. A large brick pillar marks the front entrance. The doorway includes sidelights, with glass balustrades sur-
rounding the covered decks. Plans include an unfinished basement, which might serve as an in-law suite or provide more bedrooms for a growing family. This home measures 36 feet wide and 70 feet deep, for a total of 3,440 square feet of living space, not including the unfinished basement. Plans for design 7-41009 are available for $1055 (set of 5), $1130 (set of 8) and $1190 for a super set of 10. B.C. residents add 7% Prov. Sales Tax. Also add $35.00 for Priority courier charges within B.C. or $65.00 outside of B.C. Please add 5% G.S.T. or 13% H.S.T. (where applicable) to both the plan price and postage charges. Bye-bye, bug splatter: Is this the new silent spring? Masses of monarch butterflies fluttering across Toronto’s waterfront. Painted ladies (often mistaken for monarchs) descending on Montreal. Combined with the hottest September ever recorded in the Great Lakes region, it’s been a strange time in Eastern Canada. We should savour the joys of these captivating critters while we can, because their future — and that of insects generally — is uncertain. Many Ontarians noticed this year’s unexpected monarch bounty. It’s difficult to determine population size during migration, but after two decades of fewer and fewer sightings, the number of monarchs this summer has been astounding. Hundreds of thousands are now flitting to Point Pelee, where they congregate, before heading across Lake Ontario to begin their 4,000-kilometre journey back to the alpine Mexican forests, where their great-greatgreat grandparents began in March. Why have monarchs had such a stellar summer? For the past few years, they’ve faced a number of climate-related calamities, from winter storms in Mexico to scorching heat in their breeding grounds in Texas, the U.S. Midwest and Southern Canada. Widespread herbicide and pesticide use has been linked to dramatic declines in monarchs and the milkweed host plants

they depend on. This year they’ve had great conditions throughout their journey. Even the weirdly wet summer that put Toronto Island and many beaches underwater appeared to be a boon, as it ensured wildflowers were in full bloom, providing plentiful nectar to fuel their return trip. The painted ladies stopover story is different, though also related to strange summer weather. Scientists believe shifting weather patterns and winds pushed the thousands of butterflies that descended on the Montreal area to the ground by as they migrated from the northern boreal region to the southern United States. The unexpected appearance of charming critters like monarchs and painted ladies could cloud a greater issue: the dramatic loss of less alluring insect species, such as moths, fireflies, beetles and hover flies. Monarchs and honeybees have increasingly been in the media spotlight, but as University of New Brunswick ecologist Joe Nocera noted in a recentScience magazine article,
Science Matters
“We have a pretty good track record of ignoring most noncharismatic species.” In the article, writer Gretchen Vogel describes what entomologists call “the windscreen phenomenon.” Many people recall having to clean bugs from car windshields during drives through farmland and countryside. Today, it seems drivers everywhere are spending less time scrubbing and scraping. Although bug splatter reduction is anecdotal, a growing body of research shows many once-common insects are declining. A study published in Science found most known invertebrate populations have dropped by 45 per cent over the past four decades. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds reports the U.K. has seen a 59 per cent decline in insects since 1970. Global estimates point to a 40 per cent reduction of all pollinating insects. As reporter Tom Spears asks in an Ottawa Citizen article, “So, who cares about bugs?” It’s a fair question. Many of us were raised to disdain, or even fear, critters.
Numerous species remain unloved or fly below our radar. As we learn in elementary school, honeybees and wild bees pollinate much of our food. We are now coming to grips with the alarming consequences of losing pollinators, even if it’s been difficult to diagnose the multiple causes. Insects also provide a host of other essential services, from making soil healthy and controlling pests to being a nutritious food source for birds. A 2006 study suggests wild insects provide ecological services worth $57 billion annually. Beyond any economic value, these species are irreplaceable parts of the natural world. We must acknowledge and remedy their quiet decline before we experience the next “silent spring,” a term popularized by scientist Rachel Carson, who noticed in the 1960s that widespread pesticide use was killing songbirds. As we move into fall, I encourage you to take note of the bugs in your life. Many are now flitting to warmer climates or crawling into crevices and burrows to wait out the winter. Given the rapidly changing climate, we don’t know what impact the next hurricane, Arctic vortex or 35 C September day will have on charismatic and not-quite-asappealing insects. So, savour the moment, monarch lovers. And let’s redouble our efforts to make our communities more green and resilient.
