WYTRYKUSH - George. We are saddened to announce the passing of George Wytrykush, 74, of Winnipeg, MB on July 28, 2016. George was born in 1942 in Beaverdale, SK. His early years were spent in Yorkton, SK, with his three sisters and seven brothers. While in high school, George met the love of his life, Anna Kaschl, whom he married in October 1966. George received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Saskatchewan. After graduation, George began a long and loyal career as a pharmaceutical representative for 35 years. George’s career moved him to Thunder Bay, where George and Anna settled and their four daughters were born. In 1990 the family moved to Winnipeg, MB, where George resided for the remainder of his life. George was proud of his career and developed many long-term friendships throughout northwestern Ontario and Manitoba. George’s territory occupied a vast swath of Northwestern Ontario; in summers the family joined his business travels, camping and fishing along the way. There are many fond memories of the green Apache trailer at Blue Lake and the camp at Red Lake. George taught the girls to fish, with varied degrees of success and encouraged them to participate in sports including softball, basketball and rugby. He may have been slightly less encouraging about rugby. Watching the girls play for the first time, he leaned over to Anna and said “Can’t you teach them to knit?”. George was an avid sports fan, especially when it came to his beloved Montreal Canadiens and following the professional golf circuits. After retirement, Anna and George enjoyed both travelling to visit family and friends and taking cruise vacations throughout North America, South America and Europe. He took great pride in his home and garden and in particular Anna’s jams, jellies and pickles that she produced from the garden’s annual bounty. George is predeceased by his mother (Anna), father (Michael), brother (John) and sisters (Lee and Ann). George is survived and missed by his loving wife of nearly 50 years, Anna (Kaschl) and his four daughters; Katherine (Adam Murphy), Carla (Adam Carriere), Laura and Debra (Simon Bett) and his six grandchildren: Callum and Molly Murphy; Hazel, Leonore and Simone Carriere and George Bett. He is also survived by his brothers Pete, Michael (Carol), Lorne (Judy), Art and Will (Adele) and sisters Stella and Marie (Lawrence) as well as numerous nieces and nephews. George took on his battle with cancer as he lived his life: with courage, strength and fortitude and passed also as he lived, gently and with peace. The family is eternally grateful for the support of family and friends. A special recognition goes to Lisa Babey and Sharon Surowiec for their kindness and faith. The family is also grateful for the care and compassion of staff at CancerCare Manitoba. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation or Winnipeg Harvest be considered to honour George’s memory. “I believe in angels, Something good in everything I see I believe in angels, When I know the time is right for me I’ll cross the stream - I have a dream”. PATON - Nellie Wade. On July 26, 2016, Mrs. Nellie Wade Paton, formerly of Churchbridge, SK, passed away at the Lamont Nursing Home, Lamont, AB at the age of 95 years. Nellie is survived by her two sons, John (Elaine) of Fort McMurray, AB and Gordon (Caroline) of Halifax, NS; daughter, Janet Patton of Lamont, AB; six grandchildren, twelve greatgrandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and sister-in-law, Alberta Stewart of Calgary, AB. Predeceased by her parents; one sister and two brothers. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Photos, memories and condolences may be shared through www.parkmemorial.com. years of age. Gladys was born August 21, 1924 at Otthon, SK, the eldest of three daughters born to Vincent and Ida (nee Horvath) Gulash. She grew up on the family farm and attended school in Otthon and Yorkton. Gladys loved the outdoors, she worked as her father’s “right hand man” while growing up. After completing her education she moved to Yorkton and worked at the Bank of Montreal. On July 28, 1947 she married Gus Molnar. Together they ran the McKim general store, bulk fuel dealership and post office for several years after which they moved the family to Yorkton. Gladys devoted herself to raising their growing family. Once the children were old enough, she returned to the workforce and spent most of the remainder of her working life as the secretary of St. Gerard’s Parish while also coordinating the Driving Without Impairment program locally. She was a charter member of the Catholic Women’s League and devoted much of her time to their varied activities. Gladys continued to enjoy the outdoors by growing and harvesting a wonderful garden and tending her flowers until she was well into her 80’s. Gladys was predeceased by her husband, Gus (1982); her father, Vincent (1964); her mother, Ida (1990) and son-in-law, Joe Robson (2016). Will growing our fuels drive us to a cleaner future? DAVID SUZUKI
Science Matters The shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy is occurring mainly at the power plant level. But what about transportation? Can we significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions by switching to cleaner fuels? Or is this just an attempt to keep 20th century technology chugging along while trading one set of environmental problems for another? Biofuels aren’t new and they aren’t used solely for transportation. Power plants can burn wood, for example, and many of the first autos, including Ford’s Model T, ran on ethanol or peanut oil. But they’re now seen as an alternative to fossil fuels for transportation. Biofuels offer several advantages over fossil fuels. Most are less toxic. Crops used to produce them can be grown quickly, so unlike coal, oil and gas that take millions of years to form, they’re considered renewable. They can also be grown almost anywhere, reducing the need for infrastructure like pipelines and oil tankers and, in many areas, conflicts around scarcity and political upheaval. The main biofuels are ethanol and biodiesel. Biomass like wood can also be burned directly for fuel, although that usually produces more greenhouse gas emissions to produce the same amount of energy as burning fossil fuels. Biofuel greenhouse gas emissions are offset to a great extent because plants absorb and store carbon dioxide while they’re growing and sometimes in roots left in the ground, so CO2 emissions are roughly equal to or less than what the crops store. Despite the advantages, numerous problems have led many to question whether biofuels are a green alternative. Andrew Steer and Craig Hanson of the World Resources Institute noted in the Guardian that biofuel has three major strikes against it: “It uses land needed for food production and carbon storage, it requires large areas to generate just a small amount of fuel, and it won’t typically cut greenhouse gas emissions. Producing biofuel with crops like corn often requires converting land from food to fuel production or destroying natural ecosystems that provide valuable services, including carbon sequestration. Crops also require fertilizers, pesticides and large amounts of water, as well as machinery for planting, growing, har-
vesting, transporting and processing. If forests are cleared for fuel crops, and if the entire lifecycle of the fuels is taken into account, biofuels don’t always reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions. Palm oil, used for biodiesel, is especially bad, because valuable carbon sinks like peat bogs and rain forests are often destroyed to grow palms. Using better farming methods and more efficient feedstocks and growing fuel crops on land that isn’t good for growing food can reduce land use and climate impacts. For example, fast-growing grasses, agricultural and forestindustry wastes, and even household wastes can be used rather than crops like corn that are normally considered food. Some feedstocks are more efficient at producing energy than others. Ethanol from canola and sugarcane is better than from corn, as it delivers more energy compared to what’s required to produce the fuel. Cellulosic materials, including switchgrass and agricultural and forestry wastes, are even more efficient than sugar- and starch-based fuel stocks. They produce fewer greenhouse gases and don’t normally displace food crops, but the process of converting cellulose to ethanol is more difficult than turning starch and sugars from corn or sugarcane to fuel. Some studies show switchgrass ethanol can produce 540 per cent more energy than that required to produce the fuel, compared to just 25 per cent more for corn-based ethanol. Experimental biofuels made from biomass like algae, as well as genetically synthesized organisms, show a great deal of promise. Biofuels can play an important role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, especially for applications like longhaul trucking and possibly air travel. Research into new types of biofuels is also important, but the massive amounts of land, biomass and water required to produce conventional biofuels mean they aren’t a panacea. We can get further in transportation by focusing on fuel efficiency and conservation, increased public transit and other alternatives to private automobiles, and shifting to electric vehicles, especially as clean electricity sources become more widely available.
