BATES - Tom Bates, beloved husband of Nettie of Yorkton, passed away on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. He was 84 years of age. Thomas William Bates was born on March 27, 1933 at Theodore, SK; the eldest son of Raymond and Ann (nee Condon) Bates. He received his education at the Theodore School. Upon graduation from Grade 11 Tom ventured to northern Ontario where he drove Cat and logging trucks in the bush camps. Upon learning more money was to be made in mining, he went to work in a gold mine at Pickle Crow, ON in 1949. In 1951 Tom returned to Saskatchewan and began working for the Saskatchewan Power Corporation on construction crews out of Regina. He trained as a power lineman and after working all over the province, received his journeyman status. In 1954 he went to Estevan and later Watrous as crew foreman. In 1955 he became assistant district operator at Punnichy and then to Lucky Lake as district operator in 1956. In 1957 he was stationed at Glaslyn, in 1960 at Spiritwood and finally to Yorkton in 1968, where he remained until his retirement on December 31, 1983. Tom married Joy Sedgewick on December 21, 1951. The couple had five children: Patricia, Penny, Kevin, Brenda and Candace. Tom and Joy divorced in 1974. On October 5, 1976 Tom was united in marriage to Nettie Elaschuk and welcomed into the family Nettie’s children, Sharon and Wayne. In April of 1984 Tom started a career in farming and trucking, which he loved very much. He hauled gravel for the RMs, villages, towns, for road builders and for farmers. Tom loved the farm where he let all the grandchildren drive the 1/2 ton truck, four wheel drive tractor, gravel truck, the quads and snow machines, all as long as they never left the farm. Tom loved his church, he was a devout member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and he enjoyed the fellowship of St. Andrew’s Men’s Club. He was also a very social individual, Tom enjoyed the company of others from all walks of life. His hobbies were hunting, fishing, travelling and farming, as he found all these pastimes much more enjoyable than work. Tom passed away on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre. He was 84 years of age. Predeceased by Nettie’s daughter Sharon Kishalowich and son Wayne Elaschuk. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Nettie; daughter Patricia Kingery of Nanaimo, BC; daughter Penny (Dave) Perpeluk of Nanaimo, BC; son Kevin (Kathy) Bates of Melville; daughter Brenda Anthony of Nanaimo, BC and daughter Candace (Matthew) MacLeod of Carberry, MB; Nettie’s son-in-law Borden Kishalowich of Esterhazy and daughter-in-law Mary Anne Elaschuk of Warman, SK. Also 15 grandchildren and 22 greatgrandchildren; a brother Royce Bates of Edmonton and numerous other relatives and friends. Prayers were held on Wednesday evening, Feb. 21 and the funeral service was held on Thursday morning, Feb. 22, 2018, all from Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Yorkton. Very Rev. Fr. Mel Slashinsky officiated. The Cantor, Yvonne Panchuk, led members of the Holy Transfiguration Church Choir in the singing of the responses. The cross bearer was Mary Anne Elaschuk. Members of the Order of St. Andrew attended and formed an Honour Guard. The interment took place in the Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Dean and Brent Kishalowich, Bret Sherstabitoff, Daniel and Kelly Perpeluk and Jolynn MacLeod serving as the casket bearers. BOEHM - Ronald James Boehm passed away suddenly in his home on February 21, 2018 at the age of 69. Ronnie was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Marie Boehm, as well as his siblings, Helmut, Raymond, Clarence, Wilmer, Ruth and Fred. He will be remembered and missed by his brother, Walter, his extended family and countless friends. Ronnie was the youngest of eight children born to Henry and Marie, he grew up in Yorkton where he actively engaged in hockey, skating, golfing and fishing. He enjoyed watching the Cardinals play ball while being the loudest cheerer in the crowd. As a teenager he worked at Dairy Queen, which no doubt fueled his love for ice cream. As a young man, Ronnie attended Maurice Barber School to pursue his passion of becoming a barber. Upon completion of his training, he relocated to Montreal to work as a barber. After a few years Ron moved back to Yorkton, where he continued to work as a barber for many years. He loved to share stories about his experiences and clientele. One of Ron’s great joys was watching his favourite horse, Just so Justified, race. He loved showing pictures and retelling the events of the race to anyone who entered his apartment. He was often found at A&W visiting with his friends, where he would request a special, “Ron pot of coffee” which was code for “fresh coffee”. He enjoyed spending his time with friends and family and was always eager to share his past experiences and offer advice. Ron had 35+ years of sobriety which he was proud of. He spoke highly of close friends and extended family and adored being the life of the party. In 2016, Ron suffered a stroke; however, his determination, strong-willed nature and trust in the Creator allowed him to regain his independence and quit smoking which he was proud of. In 2017, Ron traveled to Edmonton and Kamloops to attend his sister-in-law, Mary’s, birthday party and visit family. He labeled this trip, “A Trip of a Life Time” and spoke of these fond memories often. Ron, Ronnie, Uncle Ronnie, Bird and The Greatest, whichever one you knew him by, was spunky, passionate, friendly, opinionated and quickwitted. Few thoughts were left unspoken, family meals were not rejected and his love was never withheld, he was always willing to help anyone who needed it. His unpredictable haircuts, joy, wisdom and advice will be forever missed and never forgotten. A memorial service to celebrate Ron’s life will be held on Friday, March 2 at 2:00pm from St. Paul Lutheran Church in Yorkton. Interment to follow in the Yorkton City Cemetery. Memorials in Ron’s memory may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or to St. Paul Lutheran Church as gifts of remembrance. Condolences can be left at baileysfuneralhome.com.

HOLOWATUIK - Paul Holowatuik passed away peacefully on Monday, February 12, 2018 at his home on the farm in the R.M. of Ituna Bon Accord at the age of 82. He truly loved the outdoors - whether it was hunting, gardening or taking care of the yard, Paul always had a canine companion right by his side. He enjoyed watching sports from the comfort of his own home and was a big Saskatchewan Roughriders fan. Time speeds on, two years are gone, Since death its gloomy shadow cast Upon our home, where all was bright And took from us a shining light, We miss that light, and ever will; His vacant place no one can fill, Here we mourn, but not in vain, For in Heaven we will meet again. Love you forever, Sharon He wasn't a hero known by the world But a hero he was to his little boy & girl. We knew his voice before we could speak And loved it when he would sing us to sleep. He taught us life's lessons of right from wrong And instilled in us values that we might be strong. And so through the years like a hero he stood Working to give all that he could. His presence was important and we loved to see him smile For no one in the world could emulate his style. And so dear Dad our best memory to recall Is the gift of your presence The greatest gift of all. Miss you & love you, Kyle, Ashley, Brecken, Janelle, Greg and Jamie

Trudeau costume fiasco a disaster I don’t think there’s much point delving into Justin Trudeau’s India disaster. But, the long and the short of it is that he embarrassed many of us by his constant posing for pictures in get-ups that Indian people don’t even wear. Imagine Donald Trump coming to Canada and dressing up as a Mountie one day, a hockey player the next day, and a lumberjack to cap the weekend. That’s what Trudeau did, essentially, to put it into perspective. He’s a joke. Here’s a bigger joke: Trudeau delivered a public speech and announced Canada is coming off its 100th birthday (it’s actually 150 in case you slept through the last year). Here’s what’s not a joke: Trudeau invited a Sikh extremist to a state supper and there are photos of his phoney wife and a number of other Liberal politicians with this man, who was convicted of attempted murder in British Columbia in 1986. India’s Prime Minister was already giving Trudeau the cold shoulder during his time there anyway because Trudeau has been very soft, publicly, on Sikh extremism. Where have we heard this before? Trudeau soft on terror? The reality is that there is mounting evidence that Trudeau is aligned with these extreme groups and Canadians ought to be very concerned. Yes, there is every reason to suspect Trudeau is just

in over his head with this job as Prime Minister and is incompetent. Sometimes it’s funny and embarrassing, but there is also the reality that it’s very dangerous. Any time your national leader admires dictators from Cuba and China and has similar affection for ISIS and Sikh extremism, we need to take note and there should be some amount of alarm. I can only hope the Canadians in Quebec and Ontario aren’t as dumb as they were in 2015 and vote in this guy again in 2019. It’s too bad those two provinces decide for the rest of us. Remember, Canada disliked Stephen Harper because he was viewed as a dictator. Well, he’s got nothing on Trudeau. The evidence is as plain as the nose on your face. Consider this as well: Trudeau is talking tough with Facebook in regards to fake news. He wants them to take a harder stance on it. But, what is fake news? To me, fake news is the suggestion CBC posted with regards to Jaspal Atwal getting his invite to the state supper in India through corrupt operatives in the Indian government. Trudeau’s version of fake news is anything critical of him or his government. Well, that’s not fascist at all, is it? Trudeau did ban a media outlet from his supper due to what he deemed to be negative coverage of his trip to India. At the Winter

MIKE STACKHOUSE mikestackhouse@hotmail.com

Stackhouse Soapbox Olympics, there was a bit of a controversy on name pronunciation. The Canadian men’s hockey team has three English speaking players from Quebec, who say their last name the English way. For example, Derek Roy says his last name exactly how it reads, as opposed to the French way of Ru-wa. or Wah as some say. The public address announcer in South Korea saw the players were from Quebec, so he used the French method when saying the names. Hockey Canada corrected the announcer, saying that in the case of Derek Roy, the English way is what he goes by. Well, Heritage Minister Melanie Joly has chimed in and is outraged that Hockey Canada and Derek Roy would erase French culture. So, apparently, we’ve reached the point where saying your own name can upset a portion of our population. I guess that means I will now be known as Michel Empiler de Maison. In my full-time job of selling promotional advertising, we had an inside sales rep pass through the store last week and she announced that prices were going up because the warehouse where everything comes from is in Ontario. She wanted to let me know that Ontario, recently, raised its minimum wage to $14/hour (I knew this) and to make up for the added increase in costs, there would be an across the board increase in products. So, there you have it. Ontario’s ill-

advised minimum wage increase will have an effect on those of us right across the country who purchase promotional products. I was worried we may see an increase the number of cases involving trespassing and guns in rural areas in the

wake of Gerald Stanley being found not guilty in relation to the death of Colten Boushie. This weekend, a farmer was taken into custody near Okotoks after he, allegedly, opened fire on two suspects breaking into his car. Meanwhile, in an area north of Saskatoon last week, a farmer was shot at after he shouted out the window at suspects breaking into a shed. This isn’t going away anytime soon. It should be noted the Stanley verdict isn’t a one of a kind. In New Brunswick, about ten years ago, a man was found not guilty of murder after he woke

up in the middle of the night and heard rustling around in his garage. He noticed a strange truck parked in front of the building, so he decided to fire gun shots at it to make it immobile and help police for when they arrived. Turns out, one of his gun shots killed a man inside the vehicle. He was found not guilty. The home owner and the would-be criminal breaking into the garage were of the same ethnic background.
