YAWORSKI - Minnie Yaworski passed away at the Lakeside Manor Care Home, Saltcoats, SK on January 12, 2017, at the age of 77 years. Minnie was born in the Swan Plain District, SK, to Bill and Mary (Rudachyk) Yaworski on January 28, 1939. She received her primary instruction at Swan Plain Public School, achieved Grade 9 by correspondence and continued her education as she resided in a dorm at the Sturgis Composite High School throughout grade 10. She rode the bus from her Aunt Esther and Uncle Mike Teron’s farm to Sturgis for grades 11 and 12 and graduated in 1958. In 1963, Minnie was Diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy. She lived on the farm with her parents until May 1972, when they moved to Canora, SK. Minnie began to babysit and care for children. In 1973, she worked as a seamstress, which she continued until 2000, when the Muscular Dystrophy made it too difficult to sew. After the death of her parents, Minnie continued to reside in her own home in Canora, with the assistance of her Uncle Mike Rudachyk who lived next door and the Home Care Staff, as well as her friends and neighbours. Minnie prepared the meals and her Uncle Mike looked after the yard and garden. From 2002-2008, she used a desk chair to keep mobile and received a motorized wheelchair in December 2007. Minnie enjoyed many hobbies: sewing, knitting, crocheting and cooking, especially trying new recipes. As it is said, “You’re never too old to learn,” Minnie learned to use a computer. She greatly appreciated this new device and went on to create and design all her own greeting cards. Minnie loved to help people and made them a priority in her life. She always made time to talk to her friends and relatives and was therefore, often affectionately, referred to as “Dear Abby”. On August 8, 2008, Minnie underwent surgery and subsequently stayed in the Yorkton and Canora Hospitals, as well as Jowsey House in Yorkton, prior to a brief stay in respite care at the Gateway Lodge in Canora. In October 2008, she was relocated to the Lakeside Manor Care Home in Saltcoats, SK where she continued to reside until her passing. After only two hours of being there, she claimed it already “felt like home”. She was thankful for the wonderful, compassionate care she received from staff, especially those who accepted her for who she was, not what she could or could not do. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Minnie was predeceased by her mother, Mary, on February 28, 1985, her father, Bill, on February 25, 1992 and a brother in infancy. She will be lovingly remembered by her uncle, aunts, her many cousins, friends and extended family members. Prayers were held on Monday, January 16, 2017 at 7:00 pm and the Funeral Service commenced Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at 10:00 am, both from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora with Very Rev. Fr. Mel Slashinsky officiating. Interment followed in the Canora Cemetery. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the Lakeside Manor Care Home, Saltcoats, SK, as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Minnie Yaworski. Family and friends unable to attend may sign an online guest book for Minnie at www.lesonsfuneralhome.ca. Arrangements were entrusted to LESON’S FUNERAL HOME, Canora.

GABERT - Mrs. Alice Gabert, wife of the late Bert Gabert of Lakeside Manor Care Home, formerly Yorkton and the Ebenezer district, passed on Friday, January 13, 2017. She was ninety-one years of age. Alice Gabert (nee Johnson) was born on October 9, 1925 on a farm near Pelly, SK, the daughter of Carl and Ellen (nee Peterson) Johnson. She was the fifth of six children and attended Pine School. She graduated from high school in 1943 during World War II. Because teachers were needed she went for a two week training course in Saskatoon and then out to teach in a one room school in rural Saskatchewan. After seven years teaching she married Bert Gabert on October 11, 1950 at West Ebenezer Baptist Church. She then became a farm wife. The farm was isolated by heavy snow drifts during winter so she homeschooled her son Kenneth through grade six. All her life Alice remained a teacher at heart with a love of children. One of her strengths, as a person and as a teacher, was that she had a good sense of humour. For years she taught a Sunday School class at Central Baptist Church, Yorkton. After her husband Bert died in 1985, she started a job babysitting twin boys for the Jacobs family. Soon she was babysitting three young boys with the same family. Alice remained active with her gardening and riding her bicycle. She only stopped riding her bicycle at age eighty, after she had an accident. She stayed in her own home until 2010. In 2010 she became very sick. After she left the hospital she made her home at the Lakeside Manor Care Home where she resided until her passing on Friday, January 13, 2017. Even in the nursing home Alice continued to teach as she would lead devotions in the home. She continued to care for other people as she would often visit with residents who were bedridden. Alice was predeceased by her husband, Bert; her parents, Carl and Ellen Johnson; her brothers, Clarence (Ellen), Rudolph and Art (Vi), her sisters, Edith (Don) MacPhedran and Mildred (Reuben) Katzberg. Alice is survived by her loving family, her sister-in-law Vi Johnson, her son Ken, her daughter-in-law Jum and her granddaughter Alina, along with numerous nieces and nephews. A special thank you to the workers at Lakeside Manor Care Home who took such good care of Alice during her last years of life. A Memorial Service for the late Alice Gabert, wife of the late Bert Gabert, of Yorkton will be held this summer with interment to follow in the Yorkton City Cemetery. Friends so wishing may make donations in Alice’s name to the Health Foundation for use in Lakeside Manor Care Home as gifts of remembrance. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.baileysfuneralhome.com. Arrangements are entrusted to:
ZIMMER - William “Bill” George Zimmer was born in Dubuc, SK on October 3, 1937, the son of Theresa and Anton Zimmer. In 1962, Bill started working at Morris Rod Weeder on the Assembly line, then moved to the punches and later became a Foreman and then Assistant Plant Superintendent. In 1963, he married Eloise (Kime) and they were blessed with two children, Brent and Tessa. After 34 years at Morris, he then went on to cut grass for the city and prior to his retirement he was the maintenance man, along with many other jobs, at Christie Hill Funeral Chapel. In his earlier years he was an avid ball player and enjoyed many years of curling and playing hockey. Bill enjoyed wood working, fishing, camping, tinkering in the garage, including all minor and major renovations to every house they lived in and spending time with friends and relatives. Stackhouse Soapbox with class are abundant, yet the Riders have never excelled at this. From Weston Dressler to John Chick to Darian Durant to Kerry Joseph to Henry Burris to Kent Austin to Bobby Jurasin and on and on and on and on it goes. Now, don’t get me wrong. If your philosophy is that you really feel Durant can’t help you win, then you owe it to Durant to shake his hand and say thanks for the memories. Instead, they staged a nasty salary dispute and Chris Jones, essentially, blamed Durant for the team’s 5 win season because he was hurt three times. The incoming quarterback, whoever that may be, should pay attention as that’s the kind of loyalty he can expect. Here’s are the facts when it comes to the Riders: They were founded in 1910 and have won, exactly, 4 Grey Cups in
107 years. Now, that’s okay if there are 30 teams in the league. But, there are only 8-9 in each given year. Which means you should win, approximately, 7-8 championships just by accident. An average team should have won 10-12. The Riders have four. Durant quarterbacked one of those four and if someone other than Durant could count, he’d be the only quarterback in franchise history to have two Grey Cups. He’s led his team to three championship games in his eight years behind centre (actually six because he was hurt for two years). Which brings me to the injuries. Durant suffered 2 serious injuries. He wasn’t nicked up with various things that indicate his body is breaking down. The injuries he incurred could have happened to anyone at any age. He got healthy from both of
achilles injury wasn’t an issue. That’s more than he ran in 2011, 2012, and 2013 combined (4). The other thing fans don’t understand is that you don’t sign 5-6 year contracts in the CFL. Your best players can be gone after 1-2 years, so there just isn’t time to spend 3-4 years on a foundation to build a team long term. You have to do it quickly and, continuously, replace talent to ensure the team is competitive year after year. The CFL has a long list of quarterbacks who have been very good well into their late 30s. Durant, at 34, may have as many as four more real productive years left in him. Henry Burris just won a Grey Cup and he’s 41. Space won’t allow me to elaborate on the other dumb thing the Riders have done here, which is let your starting quarterback get away without having the heir apparent waiting; but I’ll leave that for another day. Most of you think Brandon Bridge is the answer anyway, and beyond praying there is no evidence to suggest he is. Nevertheless, this wouldn’t be the Riders if we didn’t take a legend and kick him to the curb like yesterday’s news.

the injuries and played as many games last year as any other starting CFL quarterback. Let’s pretend Durant wants $400,000 a year for the next 2-3 years, which I don’t think he did. But, isn’t paying him that money better than paying quality talent (in the form of players and draft picks) AND money to get a back up quarterback from another team who you think may be good down the road? And, who’s to say whoever they get can stay healthy and on the field? Mike Reilly, in Edmonton, has missed his fair share of games and he’s not old. Zac Collaros hasn’t stayed on the field in Hamilton. Drew Willy was banged up in Winnipeg to the point he may never be able to recapture his pre-injury form. All three are much younger than Durant and all three carry much greater injury risks and concerns than Durant, yet it’s the Riders who are scared out of their boots to commit to their veteran who has bled green for the last ten years. And, it’s the Rider fans who are saying ‘don’t let the door hit you on the way out’. By the way, Durant ran for 6 touchdowns last year, a indicator the

Cohen missed
Was 2016 really a bad year for celebrity deaths? It depends on whom you ask. In sheer numbers it was not particularly bad, although at least one statistician believes the profile level of the names last year was higher than usual. It also depends on who you are. This year seemed bad to me because I lost three musical heroes, David Bowie, Leonard Cohen and Keith Emerson; one journalism hero Morley Safer; and one sports hero, Arnold Palmer. When we came up with this topic, I thought between the 15 years I’ve been in this business and the well over 100 people on the long list, there would be someone that I had interviewed along the way, but there is not. Of course, I would have taken an interview with any one of them, but there are a few that stand out, including, of course, the above-mentioned heroes. I would have especially liked, for example, to interview Toronto’s crack mayor, Rob Ford. Liked is probably not the right word. It would have

been fascinating, though, kind of like looking at a gruesome car wreck, horrifying, but you can’t look away. Others that make the short list are not necessarily the big names such as George Michael or Debbie Reynolds of Mohammed Ali. Alexis Arquette, for example, is a name that probably does not immediately leap to mind for most people among the 2016 celebrity dead, but she was a high profile pioneering member of the transgender community. Those are the kinds of interviews that appeal to me as a journalist because there is a compelling narrative that isn’t just that you are great in your field and famous. My number one, however, is Cohen. In my opinion, if Nobel wanted to honour a musician with its literature prize,
Leonard Cohen was a better choice than Bob Dylan. On a personal level, Cohen is among my top three lyricists of all time along with Bruce Cockburn and Ferron, the former whom I have interviewed and the latter whom I met in New York City. RIP to all those we lost in 2016, famous or otherwise. -Thom Barker
Famous not big draw
When it comes to the famous, and the average made bigger by their deaths in 2016, I have to admit I don’t pay very close attention. From the perspective of who I might have wished to interview the famous are rarely as interesting as someone down the street impassioned by whatever they are truly interested by.
I say that having interviewed some notable people, and enjoyed the experience; Mr. Dressup, Bobby and Dennis Hull, Ian Tyson, Bill ‘Spaceman’ Lee, George Reed and others. But you walk into such interviews keenly aware you will ask them no question they have not heard before. As a result the interview becomes a bit of a fan in awe effort.
As for the list of those passing in 2016, many who had Facebook and Twitter with comments of memorial sadness extolling their passing of greatness were hardly great.
Still in looking back for this week’s ‘Cheap Seats’ a few do come to mind as truly great that would have been fun to interview, although again not that I would have likely drawn anything startlingly new from them. The list for varying reasons includes Muhammad Ali, Gordie Howe (one player I sadly could not access for either of my books on Saskatchewan hockey), David Bowie, Gene Wilder, Leonard Cohen, Gordie Tapp, Joe Garagiola, and Merle Haggard. - Calvin Daniels
