OSTAPOVITCH Michael “Mike”- Michael quietly passed away in the Yorkton Regional Health Centre on February 6, 2016 at the age of 100 years and 37 days. Mike was born on January 1, 1916 to Fred and Rose Ostapovitch (Kitzul) on the family farm at Theodore, SK. Mike was the sixth of thirteen children. As he attended elementary and high school, his roots became firmly implanted into the soil of the Theodore homestead. After high school, farming became his lifetime career, which he loved with a passion. Mike worked with his parents, was joined by brother Matt in 1936 and brother Fred in 1960. The mixed farm slowly transitioned to grain farming and registered seed growing. In 1979, Mike and his two brothers were the first recipients of the farm recognition award presented by the Saskatchewan Agriculture Extension Board for their excellent farming practices. Mike experienced many changes of farming life from horse and plow to fully mechanized tractor power and combines that continue to grow in size with each year. To keep up with the changing times, Mike became skilled in plumbing, heating, welding and electrical maintenance and repair on the farm. If there was a motor to repair, a toaster to fix, a chair to upholster or a cupboard to build, Mike did it. He was “Mr. Fix It.” Throughout the years, Mike served on various community organizations. He was a Founding Board Member of the Theodore Credit Union in 1938, served on the Saskatchewan Wheat Board Committee, the Curling Committee, the Community Club Committee that operated the weekly theatre in the Town Hall, and assisted in the formation of the Theodore and District Recreational Association in 1966. Due to failing eyesight in his mid- 80’s, Mike had to slowly give up active farming and operating the large machinery. However, he never lost interest in the day to day operations of the farm and always had advice to offer. From early spring to late fall he was busy combing the bushes for mushrooms and hazelnuts; cranberries for his morning cranberry juice; and pin cherries, saskatoons and chokecherries for making his wines. Even at 99 years Mike planted an abundant garden that supplied many with his excess vegetables. However, last summer for the first time, he did not plant his beloved gladiolas nor make his year’s supply of sauerkraut and dill pickles. He loved to travel the fields with his faithful ATV three wheeler taking in the sounds and smells of nature. Mike made his daily visit to coffee row in Theodore to hear all the news, discuss current events and bring home the mail right up to his 100th birthday. Mike remained content in his own home until five days before his passing. Mike was predeceased by his parents; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary (John) Potoski, Katherine (Paul) Welgan, Annette and Vera, brothers and sisters-in-law; Jake (Nellie), Matthew, Stephen, Bill (Lorraine), Peter (Gay), Harold, brother-in-law Dan Yacovitch, nephews; Gerald Ostapovitch and Ron (Betty) Welgan and niece Kathy Tufford. Left to celebrate his life are sister Oda Yacovitch of Montreal, brother Fred (Diana) of Theodore and sister-in-law Sylvia Ostapovitch of Calgary, many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and great grand nieces and nephews. At Mike’s request, cremation has taken place with a family graveside service and interment at a later date. The cremation care was entrusted to Bailey’s Funeral Home, Yorkton.

was the eldest son of Simeon and Evangelia Michalos. He spent his youth in Egrigoros, moving to Athens, Greece with his mother in 1965 and eventually settling in Pireaus, Greece until they moved to Yorkton, SK, Canada in 1990. Ilias was a gentle soul who loved his family and faith. He had an amazing gift for remembering dates and he routinely reminded all of us of any upcoming special day in the family or of any dates of religious note. He often would be the first to acknowledge name days, birthdays and anniversaries and had an uncanny ability to recall the day of the week of a past date. Ilias spent much of his time in prayer, meticulously praying for every single person in his entire family. Though he had little use of one side of his body and endured many seizures during the first half of his life, he especially found joy in the company of his family and always had an extremely special connection with children. It always brought a smile to his face to be in the presence of the young and he cherished each and every one of his nieces and nephews, including their spouses and their children as well. His selflessness and complete commitment to his family was extraordinary and speaks volumes about this man who always gave more than he ever received. Ilias loved with all of his heart with a purity and genuineness not often seen in our world and his kindness will be remembered by all of us who witnessed and felt the comfort of his beautiful spirit. Memory Eternal. Ilias was predeceased by his mother, Evangelia Michalou and his father, Simos Michalos. He leaves to mourn his passing his sisters and brothers, Maria (Gus) Stamatinos, Toula (Panagiotis) Avdalas, Irene (Michalis) Arakas, Argyro (Iris) and (Chris) Stoubis, Sotiris (Rita) Michalos and Gregory Michalos as well as numerous nieces and nephews, and many relatives in Greece, Canada and the United States. His family wish to thank Dr. Fourie and Dr. Roodt, all the nurses and doctors that treated Ilias at the Sunrise Health Region, and the management and staff at Aspen Bluff Villas for their kindness and support. The Prayer Service was held on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 from the Chapel of Christie’s Funeral Home in Yorkton, SK officiated by Father Spyridon Vandoros and Father Rodion Luciuk. The Funeral Service was held on Thursday, February 11, 2016 from St. Anargyroi Greek Orthodox Church in Yorkton, SK officiated by Father Spyridon Vandoros and Father Vladimir Lysak. The responses were led by Gus Stamatinos and the Cross Bearer was Kosta Stamatinos. The Interment Service followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Simos G. Michalos, George K. Stamatinos, Cimos K. Stamatinos, Simos S. Michalos, Giannis S. Michalos and Theodoros Karachalios. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

GABERT - Ruth Gabert passed away on Saturday February 6, 2016 at the age of 99 in the place closest to her heart - Saltcoats, SK. While the Lakeside Manor Care Home was her final place of residence, she was a fixture in the community of Saltcoats for more than 50 years. She was part of the Women’s Curling Club, United Church Choir and United Church Women for all her years there and worked for Harry Riglin’s insurance/ real estate office for many years. Overall, she was always active in community events and occasions right into her 99th year. Ruth and her beloved husband, Roland were stalwarts in the sports community with their two sons, Keith and Myron. While the men were playing or coaching, Ruth could always be found close by cheering and keeping score as well as just chatting with her neighbours. She had a really keen eye with a ball and a strike as well as open ear and a way with conversation. Even in her last year, she always seemed to know many people wherever she went and took special care to stop and talk. While her husband was alive, she revelled in having company over for tea and games, no matter the time or temperature. If it was a warm summer’s day, they would entertain out by the amazingly manicured and always bountiful garden. If it was a cold winter’s day, the fireplace inside would be ablaze with a nourishing warmth that was only eclipsed by her soulfully succulent baking. Oh, that baking . . . She was renowned across four towns for that baking. A talent that began at the age of eight became something of legend to those who had tasted even one morsel. She won many first place ribbons at the Saltcoats Fair for preserves and pies alike but it was her bread that was always the toast of the town, often times quite literally, and with a side of crab apple jelly. Ruth was simply a woman that provided great sustenance to everyone around her, whether it be to a stomach, or with a smile, or a simple talk, or a quick laugh, or raucous cheer. She was greatly loved and will be greatly missed. Ruth is survived by her son, Keith, his daughters, Tracy, Dawn, Jamie and Robin and their eight great grandchildren, as well as her grandsons, Jeff and Jason from her predeceased son, Myron. God’s got himself a great baker and grandpa has his best friend back. We were all lucky to have her while we did. Funeral Services were held on Saturday, February 13, 2016 from the Saltcoats United Church in Saltcoats, SK with Reverend Walter Farquharson officiating. The organist, Ruth Datema, led the congregation and members of the Saltcoats United Church Choir (and Friends) in the singing of the hymns, “Come Thou Font of Every Blessing”, “The Lord’s My Shepherd”, “Now Thank We All Our God”, “Would You Bless Our Homes and Families” and the Recessional was “God Be With You”. The Choir Selection was Jesus, You Have Come to the Lakeshore”. The Interment Service followed in the Saltcoats Town Cemetery with Dawn Gabert, Tracy Gabert, Jamie Gabert, Robin Gabert, Jason Gabert and Jeffrey Gabert serving as the casket bearers. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

BISCHOP - Mr. Russell Bischop passed away February 10, 2016, at the Yorkton and District Nursing Home. Russell was born on November 28, 1920, at Dunleath, SK, to Gustaf and Mary (David) Bisschop. Russell attended Victoria, Simpson and St. Joseph’s schools in Yorkton. Work was hard to find in the 1930’s, so he went to work for Thomas Bartlett in the Anemone district, a few miles east of Yorkton. He caught the eye of one of the Bartlett daughters, and married Sylvia on May 15, 1943. He joined the RCAF in 1940 as an aero-engine mechanic, re-mustering as a pilot in 1942. Russell was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion General Alexander Ross Branch #77 for 70 years. Russell & Sylvia raised 4 sons in the house that Russell and his father built on their farm east of Yorkton. Farming for Russell and Sylvia included grain, cattle and other livestock, even honey bees. Russell continued to farm until recently, loving to be on the land. He also worked for Matheson Brothers Construction for 13 years, the last four years as their contract manager. Some of the projects he was involved in included the Yorkton Regional High School, the Psychiatric Unit at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre, and other out-of-town projects Snaring River, Churchill and Dauphin. Good Spirit Lake appealed to Russell and his busy boys, so he, along with friends and family, built a modest cabin there. The cabin is still enjoyed by the extended family. In his later years, he rebuilt a number of airplanes. He was especially proud of the PT26 Cornell that started out as “piles of junk.” It was certified airworthy when he was done his rebuild, and he flew it to the Moose Jaw Air Show. He flew the planes he rebuilt, only crashing one “slightly.” He walked away from the crash, so it had to be considered a “good” landing. Fly on! Russell is lovingly remembered by his wife of 72 years, Sylvia, sons Stanley (Susan Anderson), Bruce (Gail), Clarence (Patricia), and Donald (Lorie), grandchildren: Trevor (Catherine), Heather (Nakeet), Janis (Rick), Steven, Karen (Damyon), and Ginette and great-grandchildren Tyler, Jordyn, Dhillan, Ava, and Nyla, sisters Phyllis Herman and Doreen Teron and many other family and friends. A service to celebrate Russell’s life will be held at a later date. If friends desire, donations may be made in memory of Russell to The Royal Canadian Legion Branch Poppy Fund or to a charity of their choice. Condolences may be left at baileysfuneralhome.com.

Assistance to remove employment barriers An agreement between the Government of Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Abilities Council will provide $904,438 in funding to help the council deliver its Partners in Employment program. The program offers a range of services to both individuals and employers to assist people living with disabilities in

Regina and Moose Jaw. “The Saskatchewan Abilities Council does great work that enables Saskatchewan people to enter the workforce to develop their skills and further contribute to the communities in which they live and work,” Immigration, Jobs, Skills and Training Minister Jeremy Harrison said. “In order to enhance our

labour force so it can continue to grow, one of the answers is to remove barriers and encourage inclusiveness in the workplace.” “Partners in Employment offers a continuum of services designed to assist individuals in achieving their full employment potential,” Saskatchewan Abilities Council

Regional Director Corey Hadden said. “The individualized services available at Partners in Employment are designed to help people with barriers find, secure and maintain long-term community employment. This focused and specialized approach to assisting people living with disabilities to enter and remain in the work-

force is made possible through the investment by the Ministry of the Economy.” The council, through their Partners in Employment offices in Regina and Moose Jaw, will assist up to 423 people living with disabilities. These are individuals aged 16 or older who

are legally entitled to work in Saskatchewan and are facing barriers to employment which may include physical, cognitive or learning disabilities, mental health issues, health conditions, or limited education and work experience. For more information, visit the council’s website at www.abilitiescouncil. sk.ca.

A look at what is happening in the Yorkton Business Improvement District

If you think that the oil slump is not effecting business in Yorkton, you had better think again. Take a good look around our city and you will notice there are a number of empty commercial spaces. These are spaces that we home to small business. Shops that were places of employment for good people, places where you could stop get what you were looking for and move on to your next shopping adventure. It was about 8 years ago when the upturn really took hold in Yorkton. It was difcult to nd commercial space in the YBID or anywhere at that time. Now shops are working hard to attract the shoppers to their doors. True some of those shops simply left their location and moved to bigger spaces, or smaller locations which had cheaper operating costs, within the YBID, but some simply closed and moved on. Its not all gloom and doom. It means that those in home based businesses, or smaller businesses in or outside of Yorkton now have the opportunity to upgrade. The Yorkton Business Improvement District wants to help nd those businesses and place them in new surroundings within our YBID. If you’re looking for commercial space, give us a call and we can help. If you’re not looking for space, but want to keep the doors of business open then you can help. SHOP LOCAL. The local shops and services employ your friends and neighbours. They pay commercial property taxes making up the lion’s share of income for the city and above all they make Yorkton a place where good things happen. Questions or comments.
