UNYI - Evelyn Jane Unyi passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 28, 2017 at the Yorkton & District Nursing Home in Yorkton, SK. She was 81 years of age. Evelyn was born on the family farm near Saltcoats, SK on October 22, 1935 to John and Lillian Solomon. She attended Graham School and as a young girl loved working in the field with her Dad. She met Elmer and they were married on November 6, 1954. The couple farmed near Saltcoats and in 1959 were blessed with their only daughter, Debra. In 1965 the family moved into Saltcoats and later to Yorkton in 1973. Evelyn loved babysitting. She enjoyed it so much that she did it for over 20 years. She was so wonderful and loved by all the children she babysat that she will always be remembered by many as Grandma. Aside from babysitting, Evelyn really enjoyed playing cards and Bingo and keeping busy in her garden. For many years Evelyn was a member of the Army and Navy Auxiliary. She always looked forward to visiting with her friends and neighbours. Evelyn was blessed with two beautiful granddaughters, Jamie Lynn and Kristen Ashley who have always been the biggest pride and joy in her life. Evelyn was predeceased by her husband, Elmer in 2001; her mother, Lillian in 1995 and her father, John in 1959. She leaves to mourn her passing and cherish her memory, her daughter, Deb and son-in-law, Matt (who has always been like a son to her) of Yorkton, SK; her granddaughters, Jamie (Ryan) Decker of Yorkton, SK and Kristen (Mackenzie) Sereda of Rokeby, SK; great-granddaughters, Chloe Jane and Kenzie Jean; sister, Gladys (Jim) Nagy of Yorkton, SK; as well as many nieces, nephews and good friends. A Service to Celebrate Evelyn’s Life was held on Thursday, June 1, 2017 from the Chapel of Christie’s Funeral Home in Yorkton, SK with Reverend Roland Legge officiating. After obtaining her diploma, Lois moved to Yorkton to begin her career as a Registered Nurse. She continued to work until illness forced her to take a leave of absence. During her 42 years of nursing, Lois got to work with an amazing group of people that became her second family. Lois was blessed with three children, Pam, Jenna and Curtis. They were all born in Yorkton and grew up on a farm near Springside. While living on the farm, Lois developed a love of gardening, both vegetables and flowers. Every summer she would plant a large flower bed and garden, most times in her bare feet. She loved the feeling of warm earth beneath her feet. Sewing was another passion that Lois enjoyed. She sewed many of her children’s clothes and even took sewing classes. Lois enjoyed traveling with her children to various locations. She took many trips to North Dakota and two trips to Disney World. Lois also enjoyed spending time with her granddaughter, babysitting her anytime she could. then click on “browse by topic”. You will find a huge selection of genealogical avenues to explore. Closer to home, visit www.saskarchives.com to see their collection of information. Their site describes their work as: “The Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan is the provincial agency responsible for acquiring, preserving and making available records of significance to the his-

tory of the Province of Saskatchewan.” You can find information online, or visit the archives in person. Under the tab “Your Visit to the Archives”, the site says: “The Provincial Archives is a public service institution dedicated to encouraging and assisting everyone who is interested in exploring our province’s history. While our website provides access to hundreds of thousands of record descriptions,

full access to the records is best achieved through a personal visit to our reading rooms. The Provincial Archives has offices located in Regina and Saskatoon. Our Regina office is located at 3303 Hillsdale Street. Our Saskatoon office is located in Room 94 of the Murray Building on the University of Saskatchewan campus.” As Canada celebrates 150 years, this is a milestone year for you to begin a genealogy project. If you are new to genealogy, start off with a different approach by writing down family stories. They may be about picking mushrooms as a child; getting your first television set; being on a party-line; visits with aunts and uncles; describing a family wedding; going to a bridal

shower… the list goes on, but these memories are priceless to future generations. These stories, even if they are as short as one paragraph, will be a special collection your family will treasure. You may want each family member to write down a special memory of past relatives, going back as far as they can remember. Or maybe you will decide to tackle that dusty box of old photos in the closet, trying to label the “who and where” of each photo. Whatever you decide to do, make this the year that you being your genealogy work. Every family has a story: discover yours with the Yorkton branch of the Saskatchewan Genealogical Society! Canada 150 Exhibit launched It’s a special day at Government House in Regina today, with the official opening of the Canada 150 feature exhibit, Canada: Day 1 taking place on International Museum Day. The multimedia, interactive Canada: Day 1 exhibit explores the immigration experiences of Canadian newcomers, from Confederation in 1867 to present day. It details their first day of arrival, what and

who they left behind, the people they met along the way, and the challenges they faced and overcame to make Canada their new home. “Canada has been attracting newcomers in search of a better way of life for more than 100 years,” Minister Responsible for the Provincial Capital Commission Christine Tell said. “In that same spirit, new Canadians continue to help strength-

en our social and economic fabric, and contribute to the beautiful mosaic of cultures that we call Canada.” The exhibit is a mini, travelling version of a larger exhibit at the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada produced the exhibits in partnership with the Canadian Museum of Immigration as a leg-

acy project for Canada’s 150th anniversary, supported by Royal Bank of Canada Foundation. The Canada: Day 1 exhibit at Government House incorporates text, images, artifacts and video to recount new Canadians’ journeys and first experiences in Canada. Visitors can use an iPad to select and play the heartfelt stories of what brought eight Canadian newcomers to the province of

Saskatchewan, and how they adjusted to a new way of life. “I was excited to be coming to Canada, but it was almost three years before my whole family was together again,” White City Town Councillor and new Canadian Rebecca Otitoju said. “At first we were concerned we would be alone, but it has worked out well. We met new friends and there was a well-established

community association and families from my homeland of Nigeria who helped us along the way.” The exhibit will be on display at Government House until September 2017, and is available for viewing during regular museum hours, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week. Admission is always free, and all ages are invited to come explore a bit of history that celebrates Canada’s 150th anniversary.
