ZULYNIAK - Olga Zulyniak (nee Pillipow) passed away into eternal rest October 21, 2016 at St. Peter’s Hospital in Melville at the age of 91 years. She was born June 13, 1925 in the Bernadine district to Anne Chonko and Wasyl Pillipow, one of eleven children. While attending school, she worked hard on the farm helping her parents with whatever she could do and helped with the raising of her younger siblings. Olga was united in marriage to Mike Zulyniak in 1946 and farmed in the Plainsview District. They were blessed with 62 years of marriage and raised twelve children, Sharon, Shirley, Richard, Ronnie, Barry, Glen, Gerald, Clifford, twins Donnie and Donna, Debbie and Cheryle. There were difficult times but “oh so many” good times. It only took little things in life to make Olga happy and grateful. Great friends and neighbours always coming and going as the door was always open and coffee and lunch were always on the table, many games of cards and sometimes a dance or two on the kitchen floor with good old Ukrainian music playing. Olga was such a good homemaker, very particular in everything she did, from cleaning the house to the way her ironing had to be done to what kind of meal she cooked. And let’s not forget about her bread, cinnamon buns and cookies. She always had extras for whoever was visiting that day. Olga was a kind and generous lady, very strong and “yes” stubborn at times and held her ground when needed. She always had praises for people and very seldom had anything bad to say about anyone. She believed in sharing and lending a hand to whoever needed it. Olga enjoyed growing large gardens and flowers and when spare time permitted, she would sit and crochet or watch the odd Toronto hockey game. Her best times in life were when families came home to visit or stay for the weekend. When grandchildren and great-grandchildren came along, she rejoiced more than ever, always making time for them and letting them know how special they were. Her faith was also important to her, going to church on Sundays, kneeling by her bed before the day started, praying before the holy picture on the wall or looking through several prayer books and saying special prayers for everyone. Mike and Olga retired into Melville where they lived in their home for several years. After Mike passed away eight years ago, Olga remained in her home until she moved into the Melville nursing home, where she lived for the past six months until her passing. Olga was predeceased by her parents, Wasyl and Anne Pillipow, in-laws Frank and Ann Zulyniak, husband Mike, son Clifford, granddaughter Tracy, brother Mike, sisters Elsie, Sally and Minnie, brothers-in-law Frank, John, Tony, Jack, Bill and Merve and sistersin-law Tannie, Ann and Mary. Left to cherish her memories and to celebrate her life are her children, sons Richard (Verlee), Ronnie (Sharon), Barry, Glen (Ellie), Gerald (Delilah) and Donnie; daughters Sharon (Myron), Shirley (Glen), Donna (Terry), Debbie (Dennis) and Cheryle (Brian) and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who she loved very much. Olga is also survived by her brother Eugene (Ann), sisters Katie, Sylvia (Ernie), Grace (Doug), Bonnie (Bill) and Diane (Lawrence); brotherin-law Andy and sisters-in-law Elsie and Rosie; special to her, Cheryl and Scott. . . . If flowers grow in heaven, Lord, then pick a bunch for us. Then place them in our mother’s arms and tell her they’re from us. Tell her that we love and miss her, and when she turns to smile, Place a kiss upon her cheek and hold her for awhile . . . (your family) Our mom would have liked to thank Dr. Eshawesh, the staff at the nursing home in Melville (Railway Crossing) and staff at the Melville hospital in ICU and on the ward. A big thank you to Darryl Leshko for always being there for mom throughout the years. She truly thought the world of you. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for Olga on Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at St. Henry’s Roman Catholic Church, Melville with the Rev. Fr. Mitch Burdzy, OMI celebrating. The music was led by Len Gadica, the cross bearer was Darryl Leshko, the readers were Jana Szabo and Lauren Zulyniak and the Eucharistic Minister was Rosalie Woloschuk. All those whose lives Olga touched were considered honourary pall bearers. At the reception following the mass, Holly Zulyniak-Korhonen, Michelle Zulyniak and Kelsey Zulyniak spoke on behalf of the family, sharing memories of Olga. Interment took place in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Sharon Kulasa, Shirley Steffen, Sharon Zulyniak, Donna Pfeifer, Debbie Orr and Cheryle Zulyniak acting as pall bearers. Arrangements were entrusted to Matthews Funeral Home, Melville.

In loving memory of Adolph “Studi” Stubenberg who passed away November 5, 2006.
The angels sang “Amazing Grace” The Lord came down and touched his face He held his hand and whispered low, come with me, it’s time to go. The angels lined up side by side As heaven’s gates opened wide. A special gift was on the way, The day that God took him away. My heart still aches in sadness, My silent tears still flow, For what it meant to lose you… Studi No one will ever know. —With love, Judy

PLAN OF THE WEEK
Cars
PLAN NUMBER 2-3759 TAKE ADVANTAGE OF A VIEW In this handsome three-bedroom home, the living areas are on the upper storey, while the main entrance is at ground level. This plan is a great choice for lots where excavation is impossible, and raising the living area will take advantage of a view. The front door, protected by a covered porch, leads into a spacious foyer. To the left is a coat closet, and directly ahead is the L-shaped stairway that leads to the
upper floor. Upstairs, the great room features French doors that open onto a covered deck that overlooks the front garden. A gas fireplace, flanked by windows, will act as a magnet for family activities in the cooler months. At the back of the home, the dining area and kitchen also have access to a covered patio. The kitchen, separated from the dining area by a work island and eating bar, includes a roomy corner pantry. Natural light will enter through a window over the double sink, and the L-shaped
counter configuration will save steps for the cook. The laundry room is adjacent to the kitchen. Through an archway from the dining area is the sleeping wing. The master suite includes a walk-in closet that is reached through an ensuite bathroom with double sinks, a tub and a shower stall. The linen closet and broom closet are located outside the master suite. The secondary bedrooms, which both look out to the front garden, share a three-piece bathroom.
Ceilings on the upper floor all measure nine feet. On the ground floor, the two-vehicle garage has access to the side garden. A den, or fourth bedroom, is located next to the front door. At the back of the home, the unfinished basement area includes a roughedin wet bar and threepiece bathroom, as well as an outdoor patio. Exterior finishes include horizontal siding with cut-stone accents. Painted pilasters highlight the entry and both the upstairs deck and patio. This home measures 40 feet wide by 53 feet, eight inches deep, for a total of 1,644 square feet. Plans for design 2-3759 are available for $755 (set of 5), $815 (set of 8) and $863 for a super set of 10. B.C. residents add 7% Prov. Sales Tax. Also add $35.00 for Priority courier charges within B.C. or $65.00 outside of B.C. Please add 5% G.S.T. or 13% H.S.T. (where applicable) to both the plan price and postage charges. Our NEW 48TH Edition of the Home Plan Catalogue containing over 400 plans is available for $15.50 (includes taxes, postage and handling). Nobel Prize for music lyrics View from the Cheap Seats is an extension of the newsroom, which is frequently a site of heated debate on topics ranging from the extremely serious to the utterly ridiculous. In addition to the views of our two regular columnists Thom Barker and Calvin Daniels printed here, please visit yorktonthisweek.com for additional web exclusive content by Stefanie Davis and Devin Wilger. This week: Was Bob Dylan a good choice for the 2016 Nobel Prize for Literature?
Applauds award
I want to applaud the Nobel Literature Committee for awarding Bob Dylan its 2016 prize. I do like a good controversy. I want to because the decision boldly breaks new ground. Why not a songwriter? work. And, some of that work is brilliant. Some is the polar opposite of brilliant, but that is to be expected with someone so prolific. Nobody can argue, however, that he has not been impactful. I want to applaud the committee, but I can’t, just as I am a reluctant fan of Dylan. I do like the fact the choice expands the boundaries of literature, I’m just not sure Dylan is the right guy to do it with. I am also not sure it is appropriate given all the truly great authors to choose from. Before the announcement, Ladbrokes, the British bookmaker had Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami leading the pack at 4/1 with Dylan bringing up the rear at 50/1. I have to admit, though, I am kind of enjoying his snubbing of
ately refuse the honour as Jean-Paul Sartre did, although the French philosopher is still listed as the laureate for 1964 as Dylan will be for 2016 no matter what he does or what I, or anybody else, thinks about it.

the venerable Swedish organization. The notably cantankerous musician has been silent since the announcement and the committee has taken to calling him “rude and arrogant.” Hello? Where have they been for the last 50 years? They didn’t know Bob Dylan is rude and arrogant? Some have suggested that the songwriter, who made his bones on the anti-war movement, might look unfavourably upon the man for whom
the prize is named. If that is true, it would not be entirely fair. While Alfred Nobel did make his fortune on explosives—he invented dynamite—he was a wellknown pacifist. In any event, it certainly makes for an interesting debate. Dylan’s website briefly noted the Nobel win to promote a new book of Dylan lyrics from 1962 – 2001, but that has since been removed. Maybe he will ultim-
Well if nothing else it was a landmark decision when it was announced Bob Dylan is the recipient of the 2016 Nobel prize for literature for “having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”. That does sound like a worthwhile reason for bestowing a Nobel prize on Dylan, who is certainly iconic in terms of American music. However, Dylan is by no means unique in terms of being a trendsetter in music. Nor does he have
the market cornered on compelling lyrics. So why is Dylan the first songwriter recipient since the prize was inaugurated back in 1901? And then there is the more basic question of whether a popular song is literature? I have no doubt many song lyrics are simply poetry with accompanying music, but Nobel worthy poetry I am less convinced of. It is unlikely the literature award will be handed out to songwriters on anywhere near a regular basis, meaning Dylan as a choice is likely rather a unique decision, and in that regard I suppose Dylan as much as anyone is deserving to carry the torch for songwriters gaining some validation for their craft as literature.

Nailbiter election locally Residents in Yorkton were treated to a nailbiter of an election last week as incumbent Bob Maloney defeated former mayor Chris Wyatt by 33-votes. Only one returning councilor made the cut this time, so Maloney and Randy Goulden will work with five new faces. Of the five, I think three of them bring some youth and a unique vision compared to what we have been accustomed to. One has a lengthy history as a business owner, who I see as being a voice of reason and caution when needed. Another is a long time sales professional who, I think, can relate well to ideals new and old. Overall, it’s a great mix and I’m hopeful of seeing some results and, hopefully, quieting some of the complaining that we have been hearing on the streets (and about the streets) over the last two years or so. What I’ll be watching, in particular, is to see how much more scrutiny the unelected city workers receive from those who have been elected. When the Trudeau Liberals were put into power last October, we saw how quick they could make something happen when they want to as the refugee influx was immediate. Of course, it had to be as people’s lives were at stake. On a personal level, I was called hateful names by those aligned with the left for being opposed to this. Well, now we have an emergency in northern Saskatchewan with several young girls, as young General Employment

as 10, committing suicide. I have been very vocal on social media platforms calling for help and now I have folks aligned with the left telling me I need to be patient. No. I will not be patient. I demand immediate action from all levels of government (federal, provincial, municipal) to ensure we have help and resources in place. Each additional day we wait could mean another human life is lost. This is not the time to play politics, but it is the time to help. It’s clear those in positions, locally, to do so are failing and they need to get out of the way and let someone else do it. I don’t want to hear anything about being too stretched or cash poor to do what is needed. Unacceptable. Money and human resources should be no object when it comes to saving the lives of young girls. What is happening should make anyone’s heart break and we need to be very vocal to our leaders to step up and lead. Something nobody bothered to consider
MIKE STACKHOUSE mikestackhouse@hotmail.com
Stackhouse Soapbox when we started opening the doors to refugees was how in the world are we going to ensure their needs in health care. We have been, forever, hearing about doctor shortages and long wait times. When you add to the population base, but do nothing in the area of social services that are required to maintain quality of life; what are you really doing? Canadians who, already, feel that they aren’t getting what they should with their tax dollars are going to get even less. Experts are weighing in on the value of conjugal visits for prisoners. One man was incarcerated for 15 years and his family was allowed to visit him for, up to, three
days at a time. This isn’t jail to me. But, experts will tell you to rehabilitate and move back into society, this is necessary. It’s important these folks know how to function when they are released. The Toronto Star article goes on to talk about how troubled and sick many of our inmates are and that this will only help them get better. If you really sit and think about it, whenever you are the victim of a crime, the only person to blame is yourself. If we, as a society, did a better job massaging these folks who commit crime and helped guide them into a more productive lifestyle; we wouldn’t have to worry about our vehicles getting stolen, or prop-
erty vandalized, or getting murdered. This may explain why we are only sympathetic to the poor person who goes to jail and spends some time in solitary when he can’t behave there either. The victim of crime doesn’t deserve our sympathy. For anyone waiting for me to comment on the latest with the American Presidential election campaign, I hate to disappoint you but I’m tired of it all. I could care less who wins. The Saskatchewan Roughriders, historically, are the CFL’s worst franchise as far as wins and losses are concerned; so it’s only fitting they laid a big egg in the form of a 24-6 loss to the BC Lions in the final game at Taylor Field Saturday. I’m not a nostalgic person, so I didn’t watch. Hopefully those in attendance left happy. I know I wouldn’t, sitting in the cold and not even getting to witness so much as a touchdown. Nice person mentions this week: Lynda Parsons, Wendy McOuat, Allan Mitchell, and Casey O’Brien.
Planning for Canada’s 150th A committee meeting of the Celebrate Canada’s 150 birthday was held last Tuesday. Plans are underway for a Bredenbury Day celebration on Saturday, June 24, 2017 so mark your calendars and tell your friends and relatives about this celebration. A Fun Day for all is being planned. A very delicious beef dinner was served at the Bredenbury United Church on Wednesday. A big thank you to all who attended, donated and worked to make this a very successful day. Thanks to all those who

Bredenbury took “take out” dinners. Your support is greatly appreciated. Congratulations to Sheldon and Megan Ritchie of Houston, Texas on the safe arrival of little daughter, a sister of Levi. Proud grandparents Barry and Caril Ritchie who have gone to Houston to see them. Hockey Season is
beginning in Bredenbury and the Bredenbury Cougars will be playing in the league this year again. Their first game is in Whitewood on Nov. 5. First home game Nov. 19. Watch for more details. Gloria, Brian, Shirley and Tyson Herron were in Estevan this past weekend as Tyson was playing in a hockey tournament. Congratulations from the Town of Bredenbury district to Edward Patzwald (TTM) from Churchbridge who was honoured with Outstanding New Journeypersons award in
Regina whis past weekend. Edward, Kendra & Abby were former residents of Bredenbury. The Bredenbury gym membership is growing. People are enjoying the new bench press and curl bar. Membership is only $30/month. Think of joining and working out this winter.
Remembrance Day Service will be held Friday, Nov. 11 at 10:45 in the Bredenbury Hall. Everyone Welcome. Bredenbury Lions will be looking after the service.
Sweet afternoon There were sweet treats and good conversation available at the St. Andrews Fall Tea and Bake Sale. The event saw the women’s group at the church bake a bounty of treats for sale and for guests. Staff Photo by Devin Wilger
