COGHILL - Mrs. Lily Margaret (nee Haw) Coghill passed away on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at the Canora Gateway Lodge in Canora, SK. She was 97 years of age. Lily, “Lil” as she was known to family and friends, was born on December 17, 1919 in Battrum, SK, the daughter of Stanley and Emily (nee Mapes) Haw. She was raised and attended school in Pennant, SK and went on to attend Normal School in Moose Jaw to become a teacher. Lily was united in marriage to David William Coghill on May 8, 1940. When Dave was discharged from active duty at the end of WWII, the couple made their home in Yorkton. Lily was employed as a bookkeeper until 1954, when married women were allowed to continue their teaching careers. She taught in the Yorkton Public School system, mostly grade one students at Burke and Dr. Brass schools until her retirement in 1979. Music was a lifelong passion for Lily. In her younger years, she enjoyed sharing that passion by playing piano with dance orchestras. As a teacher, Lily shared her musical talents with her students in the classroom and through preparing numerous school choirs to participate in the Music Festival. And in her church, she shared her love of music with the congregation of St. Andrew’s United Church as a choir member. Besides her love of music, Lily had many hobbies which included travelling, crocheting, knitting and writing poetry, skits and tributes to friends. She was very busy in her community as a member of a variety of volunteer organizations and was an active member of St. Andrew’s United Church involved in Presbytery, the UCW and Bible Study. Lily was predeceased by her parents, her loving husband, David in 1984 and all of her siblings. She leaves to celebrate her life, twelve loving nieces and nephews and their families, as well as a host of wonderful friends. Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, November 14, 2017 from St. Andrew’s United Church in Yorkton, SK with Reverend Roland Legge officiating. Words of tribute and eulogy were shared by Murray Wagner. The organist, Shani Apland and members of St. Andrew’s United Church Choir, led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, “Joyful, Joyful We Adore You”, “The Lord’s My Shepherd” and “Unto the Hills”. The Choir selection was “Jesus Loves Me”. The Interment Service followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Chris Jensen, Clarence Fick, Darcy Lovelace, Brian Pohle, Miles Pearce and Colby Middleton serving as the casket bearers. All of Lil’s former grade one pupils and her friends who knew and loved her were named as honourary pall bearers. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan. KREPAKEVICH - Mrs. Doris Krepakevich, formerly of Yorkton, beloved wife of the late Dan Krepakevich, entered eternal rest on November 11, 2017 at Extendicare in Moose Jaw. Doris Mary Krepakevich was born on March 15, 1934 to Theodore and Beatrice Kohlen (nee Livingston). She lived her early years on their farm at Marean Lake, SK. In 1941 the family moved to Fort Erie, ON where she started school and her parents worked in an aircraft factory. After 4 years there, the family returned to their farm where Doris completed her education. As a girl, Doris spent her free time in the evenings reading, drawing and singing with her family while her dad played the harmonica and her mom taught the kids how to dance. She worked as a study supervisor at the country school there for a year, then spent 2 years working at Waters’ General Store in Archerwill. In 1955 she married Arthur Letestu and they moved to Sturgis where Art ran the auto body shop. They lived there for 12 years and were blessed with four daughters while there: Charlene, Deanna, Carol, Gloria. Doris was a busy stay-at-home Mom who spent many hours gardening, cooking and sewing clothes for her girls, as well as custom sewing for others. In 1967 the family moved to Dubuc where they bought the hotel. They lived there for 8 years and they were blessed with another daughter, Marnie. It was there that Doris started doing oil paintings. Next, the family moved to Yorkton, SK. Always busy with her family, she still made time to sew many graduation gowns, bridesmaid’s gowns, wedding gowns and other custom clothing for friends. She also continued with her favourite pastime of oil painting. She also worked part time at the Casual Shop Ladies Wear store, Carlton Cards and Tan-Jay Ladies Wear. Over the years Doris belonged to the CWL and the Ladies Auxiliary and held various short term offices in those organizations. Her favourite sport was curling which she enjoyed with friends for many years and she also loved to dance. In 1979 Art died of cancer and Doris remained living in Yorkton with her daughters. In 1981 she met a widower named Dan Krepakevich and they were married in 1982. She had only Marnie remaining at home with her by this time and the two of them moved to Dan’s farm to live with him and his youngest son Kevin who was just 14, where together they raised Kevin and Marnie. After 10 years on the farm near Hamton, they built a new home in Yorkton and moved there in 1992. Around this time they also started going on fishing and camping trips with friends, they did this for many years and sometimes Doris took a canvas and her paints along to capture the scenery of beautiful northern Saskatchewan. They were always busy, enjoyed many good times with friends, playing horseshoes, having barbecues and celebrating birthdays. She continued with her sewing and she and Dan also began helping as caterers for St. Gerard’s church hall. She became the seamstress for the caterer’s uniforms, sewing 84 purple vests as well as table skirts for the hall. Another favourite pastime of hers was her garden and yard, where she spent many happy hours tending her beautiful flowers and trees. Doris and Dan each had 5 children and as they all grew and got married and had families of their own it made for some lovely big family gatherings over the years. Her favourite times were Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving and also summer barbecues, when all their children and grandchildren would come for supper and a visit, when the house was full and noisy with the sounds of a large happy family. Her family meant the world to her. Doris was predeceased by her parents, by her first husband Arthur in 1979, second husband Dan in 2012 and a brother Jerome. Doris is survived by and will be forever lovingly remembered by her daughters Charlene, Deanna, Carol (Darren), Gloria (Allan), Marnie (Jason); her stepchildren Lenard (Sandy), Alan (Jackie), Denise (Larry), Joanne, Kevin (Donna); also her precious grandchildren who were the lights of her life: Jade (Michael) Elson, Shaun (Dakota) Michael, Kelly Michael (Carolina Rodriguez Garcia), Carla (Steven) Noël, Joshua (Natalia) Edlin, Kane Dawson, Jasmine (Josh) Bachman, Jesse Williamson, Shane Williamson, Bailee Krupski, Austin Krupski, Chelsey (Cole) Engel, Dustin Krepakevich, Breana Lukowski, Connor Eremko and great-grandchildren Cash Elson, Oaklen Michael, Bronsen and Makayla Noël, Beau and Cadence Edlin, Jonah Bachman and Jetta, Rita, Tyler, Fred Krepakevich. GRIFFETH - (Richard) Lorne. November 10, 2017 at the age of 69, we lost an incredible man, (Richard) Lorne Craig Griffeth. Lorne’s generosity, compassion, charisma, humour, drive, entrepreneurial spirit and love for his family were evident throughout his life. Lorne spent many days on the golf course, relaxing at the cabin, travelling, in business ventures and was always surrounded by family and friends. He tackled life with a work hard, play hard motto! Lorne’s life began in Moose Jaw on August 19, 1948. He graduated from Mossbank High School and moved to Toronto to take Electrical Engineering. He eventually settled in Yorkton where he worked for Swinging Sam’s Music store. This ignited his passion for business so he bought the store which became his first of many retail enterprises including: Phase II, Top Forty Franchise, Caesar Salad Kitchen Boutique and Karmen’s. It was in Yorkton that he met his first wife, Karmen and raised their two children, Kurtis and Lori. In 1995, he opened and managed Pockets Sports Bar until his retirement in 2010. During his days at Pockets Lorne met and married Tammy (Bown). They shared an incredible friendship and spent their years creating moments filled with music, travel, laughter and love. Lorne, best known as Griff by his buddies, loved to have a good time and always ensured people around him were well taken care of. His favourite place on earth was his cabin at Madge Lake. He was most often found on the deck with his tunes playing, enjoying the outdoors and welcoming anyone who stopped by for a visit. He loved to spend time with the grandchildren, taking them for rides in his convertible sports car and would do anything to get a smile. Lorne was also a talented self-taught cook who loved to share this gift with others. Lorne was predeceased by his father, William Griffeth (1973), his mother, Daisy Griffeth (1984), his brother, Bill Griffeth (2002) and his brother-inlaw, Gene Stusek (1994). Lorne is survived and will be greatly missed by his wife, Tammy; son, Kurtis (Cara) and their children, Lyric and Beckham; daughter, Lori (Dwayne) Daelick and their children, Cambri and Jett, his sister, Cheryl (Lyle) Wilkinson, his brother, Ray (Ardell), his mother inlaw, Carol Bown and his brother-in-law Scott (Cherie) Bown as well as many nieces and nephews. Lorne’s children leave these final words…Dad, we will smile for the years and the lessons you gave to us. We will work hard and play hard, never letting excuses get in the way of our success. We will ‘show up in life’ in a way that will bring you pride and peace. Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure, you are loved beyond words, and missed beyond measure. The family would like to thank Dr. Pasad, Dr. Rao, Dr. Groenwald and Dr. Swan as well as the nursing staff at the Regina General Hospital, Yorkton Regional Health Centre and Jowsey House Palliative Care for their quality care during the past two and a half months. The immediate family is holding an intimate gathering in November, followed by a Celebration of Life which will be held at Madge Lake this summer. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Canadian Diabetes Association. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. We, the family of the late Lawrence Lang, would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all those who sent words of comfort and support, cards, flowers and food trays. Thanks to those who visited dad in hospital, brightening his day; to Dr. Eshawesh and the nurses at St. Peter’s Hospital in Melville for the excellent care and to Jason at Kopan’s Funeral Home for your guidance, support and beautiful graveside service. We are forever grateful to all of you. -Garnet, Jody, Laurie and families. The family of the late Doris Mary Krepakevich sincerely thanks everyone for their phone calls, messages, cards, flowers, offers of help, gifts of food, and donations to the Canadian Cancer Society. Thank you to Rev. Father Louis Kim Nuygen of St. Gerard’s Church, Very Rev. Rene Mangahas of St. Joseph’s Church in Whitewood, the St. Gerard’s Church choir, organist Diana Hornung, soloist Adelle Sherring and the C.W.L. for their honour guard and attendance at Mass. Thank you to St. Gerard’s for the wonderful lunch. To Larry German, Crystal Bailey and staff of Bailey’s Funeral Home, your kindness and professionalism made everything easier for us. Thanks to Maira Waelchli of Florissima for designing the beautiful floral arrangements. Seeing so many friends in attendance at the funeral service celebrating Mom’s life and having the chance to visit with everyone really helped our family on a very emotional day. Mom’s love for us was the greatest gift and her physical presence in our family will be missed so much. She’s left behind 5 daughters who are best friends and a large tightly knit family who truly enjoy each other’s company. She wouldn’t have asked for anything more. “As far as I can see, grief will never truly end. It may become softer over time, more gentle, and some days will feel sharp. But grief will last as long as love does - - forever. It’s simply the way the absence of your loved one manifests in your heart. A deep longing, accompanied by the deepest love. Some days the heavy fog may return, and the next day it may recede, once again. It’s all an ebb and flow, a constant dance of sorrow and joy, pain and sweet love”.

PLAN OF THE WEEK
PLAN NUMBER 2-3770 DESIGNED FOR OUTDOOR LIVING This handsome threebedroom home, designed for outdoor living, features a spacious covered deck with a glassed-in balustrade at the front, with a second covered deck off the kitchendining area at the back. The unfinished secondary suite on the main floor could be useful as a mortgage-helper. The covered entry, set off by pillars with brick bases, leads into the
foyer, with a coat closet on the right and the stairway to the upper floor on the left. The great room’s floorto-ceiling windows overlook the front deck and a doorway offers access. A gas fireplace will provide warmth during the cooler months. A railing protects the stairwell. The dining area is separated from the kitchen by a prep island with an eating bar. A doorway to the back deck will make al fresco meals a breeze. The kitchen’s L-shaped counter configura-
tion will save steps for the cook, who will also appreciate the window over the double sink. A pantry will provide extra storage space. The spacious master bedroom, overlooking the front garden, includes a walk-in closet as well as an en-suite with a soaker tub for a touch of luxury, plus double basins and a shower stall. The second and third bedrooms share a threepiece bathroom with double sinks. A broom closet is situated just outside the
laundry room, which includes a shelf for sorting and folding. On the ground floor, a study is located near the entry. The utility room is large enough to accommodate a washer and dryer for the occupants of the secondary suite, which includes a bedroom and a roughedin three-piece bathroom. On the exterior, finishes include stucco, wood siding and painted trim. Brick-based pilasters set of a decorative garage door and mark the front entrance. This home measures 42 feet wide and 60 feet, six inches, deep for a total of 1,704 square feet. Ceilings are nine feet high throughout. Plans for design 2-3770 are available for $775 (set of 5), $835 (set of 8) and $883 for a super set of 10. B.C. residents add 7% Prov. Sales Tax. Site C exposes economic folly of flooding farmland
2014 YAMAHA 1035cc, 3 cyl., gas engine, Viper XTX, mint, 500 miles. $10,750. Phone 306-783-6240.
As many countries move away from big hydro projects, B.C.’s government must decide whether to continue work on the Site C dam. The controversial megaproject would flood a 100-kilometre stretch of the Peace River Valley and provide enough power for the equivalent of about 500,000 homes. The BC Utilities Commission, an independent body responsible for ensuring British Columbians pay fair energy rates, found the dam is likely behind schedule and over budget, with completion costs estimated at more than $10 billion. In a “high impact” scenario, it may go over budget by as much as 50 per cent. The dam has faced court challenges and political actions by Treaty 8 First Nations and farmers whose land would be flooded. Treaty 8 First Nations stand to lose hunting and fishing grounds, burial sites and other areas vital to their culture and sustenance. West Moberly and Prophet River First Nations demonstrated the devastating environmental impacts Site C will have. The Peace Valley’s land and waters are an integral part of First Nations’ identity, stories, songs and language. An open letter opposing the project, signed by 27 people and groups, including Amnesty International, says the
project betrays Canada’s commitment under the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Consent from affected Indigenous Peoples is required for developments such as megadams, yet the West Moberly and Prophet River First Nations did not give consent. BC Hydro’s economic analysis also ignored ecosystems and the benefits they provide. The David Suzuki Foundation estimates ecosystem services from farmland, wetland and other natural capital in the Peace watershed are conservatively worth $7.9 billion to $8.6 billion a year. Services that sustain the health and well-being of local communities include air and water filtration, erosion control, recreational services and wildlife habitat. The replacement value of what will be lost by flooding far exceeds the dam’s economic returns. Failure to account for the loss of ecosystem services puts us on a destructive course and undervalues natural capital in regulatory decisions.
Alternative energy sources such as wind, solar and geothermal, leveraging existing projects and prioritizing localized generation could be as good — or better — for B.C. ratepayers as the megadam. Alternative energy has the advantage of being able to be timed for when it’s needed. Additional generation capacity may not even be necessary because BC Hydro currently exports or sells a significant amount of power, often at a loss, outside the province. Serious concerns are also being raised about production and release of methylmercury from soil. When land is flooded, naturally occurring soil bacteria can convert mercury to methylmercury, a toxic compound that can move up the food chain and potentially harm human health. Modelling projections for Muskrat Falls dam on the lower Churchill River indicate flooding likely will increase methylmercury 10-fold in the dammed river and 2.6-fold in surface waters downstream. loom at 22 major dams now proposed or under construction close to Indigenous communities in Canada, including Site C. The area to be flooded is some of the North’s most arable farmland. Agrologist Wendy Holm estimates this breadbasket can feed a million people in the region, an important feature as climate change alters growing seasons and demands more local food systems. Dams now supply about three-fifths of Canada’s electricity. A long-held belief that big hydro projects are the most economically sustainable energy options is fast losing support as renewable energy costs plummet and projects multiply worldwide. The Peace Valley has an incredible ability to generate natural wealth if protected from development. The alternative is ecological fragmentation. Economic scrutiny of Site C was long overdue but only answers some questions about hydro
megaprojects. We can’t elevate the economy above what we need to survive. Humans are now the primary factor altering the physical, chemical and biological properties of the planet on a geological scale. Building more megadams epitomizes the folly of our ways. The Site C dam should never have been approved. Continuing construction is bad public policy, and it’s not too late to halt it. Canada must join other nations and stop the destructive, unnecessary practice of damming major rivers and running roughshod over Indigenous rights and title. Lower impact renewable energy, like wind, solar and geothermal, look better every day. David Suzuki is a scientist, broadcaster, author and co-founder of the David Suzuki Foundation.
